PR E S I DE NT’ S M E SSAG E

Dear Premier Club Members, TO ALL OF YOU WHO VACATIONED OR SUMMERED ELSEWHERE, WELCOME BACK! We’ve had a very eventful and enjoyable summer. Unfortunately, it was capped off by Hurricane Irma – but I’m pleased to report that the resort is recovering nicely from that unwelcome visitor. We hope all of you and your families manage to stay safe for the remainder of the hurricane season. On to happier news: our new season is underway! The next two months are full of great programs, including reprisals of popular series such as Sunset Rituals and Corks & Conversations wine dinners, introductions of new Artists in Residence, brand-new offerings like our Sail Swim Catamaran Cruises, and – of course – perennial holiday favorites. As always, we’ve made sure to include activities for all ages and interests, e.g. both adult-oriented and family Halloween events as well as new programs for singles. C

Soon it’ll be much easier for you to stay on top of everything that’s going on, because our new Premier Club website and app are about to launch! You’ll receive a registration link via email this month, and we encourage

SAY ALOHA TO

POKE BOWLS AT BEACHES

The nation has found one more thing to love about Hawaii – poke bowls! The raw fish salad gets its name from an Hawaiian word meaning “to slice or cut.” You’ll find poke stands everywhere on the islands. Now you can also enjoy poke at Beaches Bar & Grill! A fresh twist on the original, our version features fresh tuna, cucumber, edamame, scallion, coconut quinoa rice, tamari soy, sriracha aioli, grilled avocado, nori chip and furikake – served with an ocean breeze!

It’s hard to find tender, sweet Cape sea scallops outside of New England, but SeaGrille Chef de Cuisine Donna Wynter has managed to do just that. She and her culinary team are serving the plump, flavorful scallops in an intriguing dish accented with crisp potato chips, Brandade (an emulsion of salt cod and olive oil), baby leeks and a smoky sauce made from sweet piquillo peppers.

WINE TASTINGS @ THE BLUE Reservations required. Please call 561-447-3222 while space is still available.

BODEGAS RESALTE Wednesday, October 4 | 6 – 8 pm Nestled in the D.O. (Denominación de Origen/ Designation of Origin) Ribera del Duero, Bodegas Resalte began producing wines in 2000. The diversity of microclimate in this region of Spain creates complex and flavorful wines, while stateof-the-art winemaking equipment combines with traditional methods at Resalte to produce modern, complex, balanced wines made from an indigenous grape variety, Tempranillo. $35++ per person

ANDERSON VALLEY WINEMAKERS: DOMAINE ANDERSON AND SCHARFFENBERGER CELLARS Wednesday, November 1 | 6 – 8 pm Anderson Valley is a unique spot in Northern California, where redwood forests meet the Mendocino coast. The region is renowned for its ideal pairing of warm days and fog-cooled nights. These characteristics led Jean-Claude Rouzaud, of the Louis Roederer family, to the area in 1981 to begin cultivation of premium pinot noir and chardonnay grapes. Today, Jean-Claude’s son, Frederic, continues the pursuit of quality on 50 acres of family-owned vineyards that weave through the valley’s dramatically diverse terroir. The cool coastal influences of Northern California and the deep soils of the Anderson Valley also provide an unmatched appellation for the sparkling wines produced by Scharffenberger, which are made using a demanding process called Méthode Traditionnelle. $35 per person

A HARVEST

OF

FLAVOR

Major League Baseball has the World Series. The world of style has Fashion Week. On the world’s vineyards, all the painstaking work, the worries and the joys culminates with the harvest. The time varies from year to year, so winemakers closely monitor their grapes. If the grapes are picked too soon, the tannins may not have fully developed. Waiting, on the other hand, leaves the crop vulnerable to changing fall weather. Even if the weather cooperates, waiting too long may result in sugar levels that are too high. When the grapes are safely brought in and the crushing season begins, there is definitely cause for celebration. (Alas, technology – in the form of automated crusher-destemmers – has replaced the foot stomping ritual.) The Resort & Club is joining in on the crush-season celebration this year! At Lucca, you can enjoy new vintage releases of Italian wines by the bottle along with a special selection of wines by the glass. 501 East will feature classic American wines. At SeaGrille, the focus will be on wines that pair perfectly with fish.

THE BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE Make yourself comfortable and get ready for great game-day action. You’ll find DIRECTV Sunday NFL Ticket on big-screen TVs and game-day specials throughout the Resort & Club! Enjoy special game-day menus, cocktails and craft beer specials in Bar Luna and Palm Court while you watch the game on one of seven big screens. Locally broadcast games will be playing on the three TVs at Shaka Bar & Grill, which will be serving running specials on beer buckets, craft margaritas and wings. You can catch college and pro action on the screens at 501 East. Every Saturday and Sunday beginning October 1, while your favorite teams take the field, you can score 75 cent wings and draft beer specials in bar area only during all college and NFL games. Beaches Bar & Grill will have games on each of its four big screen TVs and will be serving a variety of game day specials. Having friends over to watch the game at your place? Morimoto offers a Game-Day Sushi Platter. Enjoy a plentiful variety of Morimoto favorites for $99. Call 561-221-9133 24-hours in advance to order. Your platter will be ready for pick up on game day!

A MEMBER FAVORITE RETURNS TO MORIMOTO Kumamoto Oysters are prized for their sweet buttery flavor – some say they can even taste a hint of cucumber. Originally from Kumamoto City, Japan, you can now find this delicacy in Northern California. More importantly, you can find them at Morimoto, where they are served with a trio of sauces and toppings: Morimoto’s flavorful salsa with chives, ceviche sauce with cilantro and a citrus ponzu sauce made with jalapeno. Enjoy this seasonal favorite while you can! Morimoto is now open seven days a week! BOCARESORT.COM •

BEHIND BARREL THE

W

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

—Aristotle

WELCOME to the first installment of Behind the Barrel, my new monthly column for Boca Club Life! I’m excited about the opportunity this will give me to share my thoughts and, hopefully, peak your interest in the wonderful world of wines and premium beverages where I spend my days. Thinking of interesting ways to heighten your enjoyment of the fine wines and cocktails we serve at the Resort & Club is something I will never cross off my to-do list. It’s also one of my favorite aspects of my job as director of beverages for this unique property. Last year, we started the season with our Artisanal Affair. Not bad for a first try, but I knew we could do better. This year, the restaurant team and I put our heads together and decided to step it up a notch. The result is the Grand Tasting you’ll see scheduled for Thursday, October 19 on this month’s calendar. For this event, the talented chefs de cuisines from Lucca, SeaGrille and 501 East, Shaka Bar & Grill, Morimoto, and Bar Luna – as well as our renowned pastry team – have all created a menu of playfully prepared bites that will compliment beverage offerings from across our menus. By combining tasty creations from the kitchen with tantalizing libations, we hope to create an experience that will thrill all your senses. The Corks & Conversations Grand Tasting is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting season. This month, our celebration of the wine harvest and crush season begins. You will find special wines featured in all our restaurants so you can easily join in on the celebration. Whether it’s a new vintage of your favorite cab or a unique grape varietal being poured by the glass, these wines will make your celebration of crush season an exciting revelation. As the season continues, I look forward to guiding you on a journey through an ever-changing liquid landscape. Cheers! Eric Hammer Director of Beverages 14

MESMERIC

MOTION

ANNE LILLY uses carefully engineered motion to shift and manipulate our perceptions of time, space and energy. Her ordered and precisely constructed interactive sculptures move in strikingly organic, fluid and mesmeric ways. Employing opposing modalities — analytical and intuitive, rational and emotional — Lilly's sculptures elicit new connections between the physical space outside ourselves and our own private, psychological domain. They are often fabricated in machined stainless steel, but require the viewer's touch to initiate movement: pressing clinical qualities against the sensuous response of each piece.

Lilly holds a Bachelor of Architecture, magna cum laude, from Virginia Tech, and has taught at MIT, Massachusetts College of Art, the Art Institute of Boston, the DeCordova School, and Maud Morgan Arts. Her works have been included in exhibitions of kinetic art at the MIT Museum, the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA, the City of Boston’s ParkArts program, the Fort Point Public Arts Series, the 2007 DeCordova Museum Annual Exhibition, the New Britain Museum of American Art, and the Middlebury College Museum of Art. Notable awards and residencies include guest artist at Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, visiting artist at MIT, Grant Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Barnett & Annalee Newman Foundation, and artist-in-residence at the Art Institute of Boston.

WHAT’S BUZZING AT THE CLUB

HAPPY EVER AFTER! Congratulations go out to Premier Members Joe and Jacquie Harris, who celebrated their wedding at the Resort & Club earlier this year. The couple’s 60 out-of-town guests loved every minute of their stay at the Resort and, along with locals, celebrated with the couple in the Cathedral Ballroom. “We were amazed at how beautiful everything was thanks to Joni, our wedding planner, and Boca by Design,” Jacquie says.

Howard and Lois Zenner celebrated their 60th anniversary at the blue earlier this year.

FROM THE HEART Thanks to the generosity of Premier Members Dr. Allan and Mrs. Eileen Kaplan, Boca Raton Regional Hospital has established a local chapter of Mended Hearts, a national nonprofit organization that offers the gift of hope to heart disease patients, their families and caregivers. Dr. Kaplan also supports the program by giving of his time as a volunteer, speaking with patients, comforting families and encouraging countless people – as another volunteer once did for him. The couple’s message is simple: “When you give back, it changes you. Wake up and be thankful for today and find a way to help someone.”

BALLROOM BATTLE The winner of this year’s Boca’s Ballroom Battle is none other than Resort & Club President John C. Tolbert, who – with the support of our Club Community – raised an impressive $193,000 for the George Snow Scholarship Fund. “I’ve been humbled by the challenges of ballroom dancing, and truly inspired by the generosity of friends, Club Members, and the community,” Tolbert says. The George Snow Scholarship Fund provides educational grants to some of our area’s brightest and most deserving young scholars. These scholarships are four-year commitments and are designed to bridge the gap between the cost of education and the scholar’s existing financial resources. Tolbert was one of eight prominent community leaders competing in the annual event, which was held at the Resort & Club in August. Together, they raised $508,000 – a new record!

CHRISTOPHER CROSS HAS FIVE GRAMMYS – including Record of the Year for the single “Sailing,” an Oscar and a Golden Globe Award to his name. He has collaborated with Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager. Overall, he’s composed and recorded some 90 songs, including four #1 singles and 9 Top 20 hits. At the urging of friends and fans, Cross is working on a new album that will highlight his skill as a guitarist. “The album will be a bit unique in that the songs will have guitar solos by me and guests, as well as sax and piano solos from guys in my live touring group, but the songs will also feature some vocals. As an example, there might be a recurring chorus or bridge that is sung that communicates a theme, but no verses as in my past work. Sort of a hybrid album stylistically,” he says. The first track completed for the CD, “Roberta,” is a tribute to Joni Mitchell. “Joni is my main influence as a songwriter,” Cross says. “And while I love her early work, as we all do, this new track is more in the style of “Hejira” [Mitchell’s eighth studio album, released in 1976] and her later work.”

CHRISTOPHER CROSS SAILS ON Mitchell is one of several celebrated singer-songwriters whose influence can be heard on Cross’ most recent CD, “Secret Ladder,” which was released in 2014. One of the cuts – “The Times I Needed You” – is intentionally reminiscent of the Beach Boys. “It’s very much a tribute,” Cross says. “Brian Wilson’s writing was a big influence on me and Carl Wilson was my No. 1 vocal influence growing up. Years later, we became very close. Carl sang on my second album (1983’s ‘Another Page’), and we did a lot of touring together and vocal sessions for other artists. He’d always say, ‘We make a nice sound’—I just treasure that.” Over the years, Cross has continued to tour, to the delight of fans around the world, performing a mix of songs, old and new. “I’m on the road about 100 days a year,” he told BCL before heading out on a tour that would take him to South America, New Zealand and Australia before bringing him to the Resort & Club on Friday, October 6.

RESHAPE REFINE BODY REVIVE COMPOSITION with TOM SINGKORNRAT

T

TOM SINGKORNRAT IS NOT YOUR AVERAGE FITNESS INSTRUCTOR. Trained as an electrical engineer, he worked at IBM for 25 years before taking early retirement about eight years ago. At the time, he had already been studying Taijiquan and qigong for more than 20 years. Also known as tai chi, the practice focuses on slow, deliberate movements which encompass key components of fitness – including muscle strength, flexibility and balance. With the free time retirement brought, Tom renewed his commitment to the practice and dedicated himself to further study of the ancient Chinese martial art. Six years ago, at the urging of friends and neighbors, he began to share his knowledge by instructing others in the practice. “By sharing my knowledge, more people will be able to benefit from Taijiquan and qigong,” he says. From a fitness perspective, those benefits include strengthening of both the lower and upper extremities and also the core muscles of the back and abdomen along with increased flexibility and balance. “Taijiquan and qigong are two intertwining arts that are virtually inseparable,” Tom says. “Qigong comes from the Chinese words qi (life energy) and gong (work) and is taken to mean ‘work to cultivate life energy.’ Qigong exercises usually involve breathing control, static stances and moving meditations. It is the basis for all Chinese martial arts.” Taijichuan, which is the term used in China for the practice commonly known as tai chi in this country, is usually translated as “grand ultimate boxing.” “People usually perceive Taijiquan as a low impact, slow moving exercise, but the fact is that Taijiquan is a martial art born of Taoism; the principle of yin and yang is at its core,” Tom explains. “The actual Taijiquan practice contains soft, slow moving exercises that lead to blindingly fast and effective self-defense techniques as well as movements at every speed in between.” If you would like to discover the benefits of this ancient practice for yourself, you can book a private Taijiquan training session with Tom by calling (561) 447-3239.

A FEW WORDS WITH

MIKE BRUGGEMAN FOUNDER & CEO OF ORGANIC MALE OM4

M

MIKE BRUGGEMAN, FOUNDER AND CEO OF OM4, grew up on an organic dairy farm in Wisconsin and enjoyed a career in hospital administration before following his passion. In creating Organic Male OM4, he has made helping men understand the importance of skin health and nutrition and helping them make the connection between looking good, feeling confident and achieving results at work and in life is his mission. Mike doesn’t just talk the talk. He walks the walk, making sure the standards at Organic Male OM4 are rigorous – from green chemistry formulas using only the purest, ethically sourced ingredients to the socially responsible and eco-coconscious corporate culture. Q: What do you mean when you use the term Organic Male? MB: “Organic Males” are a different breed, and not interested in generic, one-size-fits all product. Organic Males understand the importance of precision honing their game, being the best they can be and achieving results. Whether at work, at home or engaged in sports, recreation or leisure activities, Organic Males are demanding. They recognize quality and appreciate the finer things in life. Q: OM4 Organic Male is the first skin-type and condition-specific professional men’s line to launch in the US. But why do you need four steps? Isn’t there some kind of consolidated, multi-tasking product that will work? MB: Personally, I think not, and here’s why. Consider if you will, a golf bag. Golfers understand different scenarios require different solutions. The golf bag holds woods, irons, hybrids, wedges and putters, each designed for a specific situation and to achieve an optimal result. Q: Do men have to use all four products to see results? MB: Whether is it golf, tennis, skiing, biking, cars, hotels or coffee, the same rules apply. Precision, quality, performance and service come at a price. The price tag with Organic Male is simply the time you are willing to invest. You choose your level of commitment and the results you want achieve. Maybe you are “recreational biker” and don’t need a carbon composite frame, the best drive train and ultralight wheels because the Tour de France is not in your sights. In that case, an OM4 shave cream is a great place to start. If you are training to win the Boston Marathon, pick all four and in less than 4 minutes you will feel and see the difference. Q: We’ve heard that part of your work every day is R & D, keeping at the forefront of the latest green science innovations and technologies which deliver unparalleled results. What motivates you to keep pushing the envelope? MB: For me, it is far less about the actual products, which are amazing by the way. My satisfaction comes from seeing the look on a guy’s face when he first experiences the immediate results of OM4’s targeted skin solutions 4 men.

Held over due to popular demand!

EXPERIENCE THE OM4MEN FACE TREATMENT a $150 value –

THE HIGH PERFORMANCE TENNIS ACADEMY

WELCOMES NOTED COACH

ADRIAN ZEMAN

A

ADRIAN ZEMAN, who was one of the top junior players in Australia before committing himself to coaching, has joined the staff at the High Performance Tennis Academy (HPTA) at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. The Academy's coaching staff provides customized training for experienced tournament competitors and high school team players who want to take their game to the next level. “At HPTA, our goal is to teach and coach players to achieve their best results possible and help build champions both on and off the court,” says Academy Director Bobby Bernstein. “Adrian is going to be a tremendous asset when it comes to doing just that.”

Adrian Zeman and Bobby Bernstein of our High Performance Tennis Academy

Adrian launched his teaching career after his time on the pro tour, serving first as head coach and director at one of the sport’s premier destinations, the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch in Texas. From there, he moved to Key Biscayne where he worked as director of tennis at the Ritz Carlton. Adrian was also a co-founder and director of the ZMG Tennis Academy here in South Florida. Many outstanding junior players – from across the country and around the world – trained with ZMG before going on to play collegiate tennis at a range of top schools and professional tennis on the International Tennis Federation (ITF), Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tours. Adrian himself is no stranger to the ITF, ATP and WTA Tours. He has worked and consulted for many professional players on the tour throughout his career, traveling the world in the process. The players Adrian has coached have won numerous ATP, WTA and ITF events and competed at the Grand Slams and the Olympics.

PRESENTS

Y

YOU CAN HEAR Jon Secada’s passion for music in his recordings, in his collaborations and even in his charitable work. In performance, that passion is evident in the Grammy Award winner’s diverse repertoire, which ranges from his top 10 hits – like “Just Another Day” and “Angel” – to classics from the Great American Songbook and the occasional Broadway tune. If you’re fortunate enough to be in the audience when Secada takes the stage at the Resort & Club, you may also hear a timeless bolero off his most recent CD – “To Beny Moré With Love.” Secada will perform on DATE as part of the exciting new season of Jazziz One Nite Stand concerts. As one of the first successful Latin crossover artists, Secada dominated pop music charts in the early ‘90s. He has toured and collaborated with opera legend Luciano Pavarotti; recorded duets with Jim Brickman, Olivia Newton John and Frank Sinatra; and served as a host of “Latin American Idol.” He’s even collaborated on a number of movie soundtracks – including Disney’s “Pocahontas.”

JON SEC A DA

In his multifaceted musical life, Secada has also earned praise as a producer and songwriter. In fact, one of his first major breaks came from a collaboration with Gloria Estefan that led to the creation of her #1 hit single, “Coming Out of the Dark.” “I’ve been a big fan of Jon’s since I first heard his beautiful voice,” Estefan has said. “He’s one of those special singers that makes my hair stand on end!” Since teaming up with Estefan, Secada has earned multiple Grammy Awards for his own recordings while continuing to pen popular songs for superstars such as Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin. Martin, for whom Secada wrote the hit “She’s All I Ever Had,” is also among the Grammy Award winner’s many fans. “In addition to being a great human being, Jon has an innate talent for writing beautiful songs,” he once said. “All of us artists who have worked with him sincerely admire him.” He’s also maintained his friendship with Estefan – who set him up on a blind date in 1994 with a young woman named Maritere, the talented choreographer who had worked on her music video for “Buen Amor.” In a story that would be perfect inspiration for a love song, they were married in 1997.

NESTOR TOR R ES

“WHETHER PERFORMING FOR THE DALAI LAMA or for students at Grammy CareerDay, Florida-based jazz flautist/composer/producer Nestor Torres is one of the most beloved musicians on the jazz scene today,” the experts at SoundsofTimelessJazz.com report. Torres will join Jon Secada for a special celebration of Latin jazz at the Resort & Club. The rhythmic and mellifluous sound the Grammy Award winner coaxes from his flute is in a class by itself. Like Secada, Torres has also explored a variety of musical landscapes in his career, collaborating with artists as diverse as Gloria Estefan, Kenny Loggins, Dave Mathews, Herbie Hancock, Tito Puente, Michael Camilo, Paquito D' Rivera and Arturo Sandoval. He has also performed with the Cleveland, Singapore and New World Symphony Orchestras among many others.
