I recently got this message: “What would YOU know about Disability and Inclusion to be offering one-on-one mentor support..?” My response was/is something I have not before openly spoken of:     

When you are born with at least 2 debilitating chronic disabilities… When your early teens and education opportunities are shattered by extreme lifethreatening illness… When your late teens imprison you in two years of epilepsy… When you fall over in the street from epilepsy and wake to see people walking past not wanting to help or who assume you are drunk… When you live your entire life with a condition that could take your life… Shall I go on…?

Yes.. I know about disability and inclusion…and I know what it is like to be looking down a dark tunnel and see no light for a time… and wonder how to bring back the light. But l make this point: This is the card that life dealt to me – so I had a crossroad choice – just give up - or strive to understand, “what’s it all about.” This has led me on a personal life-journey of searching, many good and bad decisions, understanding, sharing and discovery of who I am and why..! Many “born healthy and wealthy” people never get that far or find contentment, or even understand what that means – so what do I have to complain about? Nothing! I was born into the most blessed nation on earth and watch as humanity steals the wealth and living capacity of future generations. So what do I know about Disability and Inclusion and life itself? Very little really, as the more I learn, the more I realise I know nothing - as do many others who have faced even much greater challenges and have not given up. So where has this journey led me? Most of all, to understanding, empathy and wanting to share what I have learned with a world that largely does not want to know – a world, on one hand which is obsessed with being first in a race towards the edge of a cliff to infinity and indifference - and a world on the other hand, struggling with every imaginable and unimaginable evil. But this does not stop me from wanting to share. That is who and what I am. It is summed up in the words of Pablo Picasso:

“The meaning of life is to discover your gift – the purpose of life is to give it way” That is to say: “share” your gift.

SO, how is your life-journey of sharing going for you? if you are even slightly interested in what I have to share as a result of this life-long journey of discovery and understanding – against the tide of traditional top-down one-size fits all quick fix “solutions” - then you are welcome to take a look.
