Overview of the Community Gold Program Establishment Process

Community Regenerative Gardening is the term I use to describe the need and the process for maintaining community liveability and sustainability. Just like working in your family vegie garden, if you don’t plant new seeds and seedlings each season to regenerate new growth to replace the old, then the garden will decline, become overgrown with weeds and eventually disappear.

To fully understand and appreciate why you can review my article about Inclusive Communities.

Again, just like Grandma’s vegie garden, if you stop working at it, then the process of regeneration will stop and go backwards.

This needs to be done in Communities are the same. Unless community and also between they are actively “regenerated” with different sectors of the community. order to progressively make their community a more micro-diverse, new social and economic seed There needs to be a positive bridge more liveable community and to be opportunities (ideally in a built between Council and in a position to identify, capture and constructive, well planned manner) Community, and that is what the to replace those which naturally fall Community Gold Program provides act upon on any windows of away, then they will decline or grow - a step-by step process for building opportunity? Councils do not have expectations, so that the pouring a years’ supply of water on the financial and people resources Community can do more to help to provide all of the micro-needs of itself while the Council can do more your garden today and expecting to harvest tomorrow is unrealistic. their communities to help the community to help The same principle applies. itself. The following 10 steps provide a basic overview of the Community Gold Program’s establishment process 1. Recognition of the needs for positive change and willingness to take action. When someone or a small group of individuals reach this point, the Community Gold Program provides everything they need, progressively one step at a time. 2. There needs to be a means of positive communication with the whole community in order to network and build positive support. This can usually be done via a social media page with a Community Gold Network Facebook Group page. 3. In nature, everything starts small, from a seed then grows. This is how the Community Gold Program is designed. It’s not about bludgeoning individuals to get involved in projects or activities. Rather, it’s about getting small groups of individuals together to work on projects that THEY are passionate about, and showing them how. * 4. Nothing happens without a Plan, but this takes time. In the meantime, a small steering committee needs to be established, in order to gather essential first-stage information, so that a foundation can be laid upon which to build a Plan which I call a Community Framework for the Future. 5. The Steering Committee will work with the Program Pre-Establishment Guide to gather the essential foundation information for assessment. This information is formatted into a simple Draft Plan at this stage and circulated throughout the community, inviting community direct input. 6. The Draft Plan will include a recommendation for identification of one or more suitable local social-entrepreneurial individuals to be trained as the Community MicroFacilitator/s who will provide mentoring to individuals who have ideas for a new business and support to existing business. 7. The Draft Plan will also call for the establishment and support of a formal local Community Gold Network (ideally as an Incorporated Body) which will manage the Framework for the Future activity under the Community Gold Program Project Management Guide. 8. Community response to the Draft Plan’s questionnaires is gathered, reviewed and incorporated into a final Framework for the Future which should then be formally launched in the community. 9. This document is the living, active Plan which will be used for progressive Community Regenerative Gardening. It should be updated every year, or at least every second year with a simple community meeting to identify essential change, new opportunities or challenges that need to be included. 10. The new Incorporated Body (“Local” Community Gold Network Inc.) should be established which will operate under the Community Gold Program’s Community Development Project Management Guide. The Group will communicate regularly with the whole community via the Facebook Page, or distribution of a simple flyer or through a supportive local Newspaper.

*Always remember: Community Regeneration is the COLLECTIVE outcome, over time, of INDIVIDUAL outcomes and that of GROUPS of individuals who share a common need or goal. The Community is now on its constructive pathway to progressive regeneration.

There is a natural “formula” for regenerating a small community Just as every seed… contains a genetic formula which tells it how to grow and what to grow… it can’t grow without a “process” of planting, watering, weeding and it must be planted in the right place at the right time. Likewise, in a community…seed ideas contain a genetic formula by which the the can community can be regenerated, made more liveable and more sustainable. Like seed, a community can’t grow without a similar process of regeneration.

So what’s the process for activating this natural formula..?

So guess who needs to plant seed..? For more about the Community Gold Program, visit the Program Resource Centre
