Welcome Readers, Welcome to the June edition of Chadderton Life and here’s hoping for a beautiful Summer. I suppose the start of the World Cup hasn’t gone unnoticed and most of you will be preparing for some late night viewing on the 14th when England take on Italy. Fingers crossed for the right result. My garden was overdue some attention and I got a really good deal and great results from Matthew at MRS Gardening. I’d like to thank all the advertisers and people who contribute to the magazine and please keep sending feedback and checking on our website. Have a lovely Summer month and I’ll see you all next time. Best Wishes Trevor

Garden

Urban Vegetable Gardening on a Patio or Balcony You don't need a few acres of land in the rambling countryside to turn your hand to vegetable gardening. As the price of property continues to rise and space becomes a precious commodity, more and more of us are thinking how we can utilise outdoor spaces to grow our own vegetables. Whether you plant up a window box on a window ledge or use a balcony with tiered plant trays, there are a number of ingenious ways to create gardening space if you are willing to be inventive. Consider Your Available Space Before thinking about planting, it is important to identify the space you have available. Where does the sun hit it? Is it shaded? Where does the wind come from? This will determine what will be best to plant. You will not be able to grow some things. Potatoes, for examples, grow best when dug deep and it would not be practical to plant these (although not impossible!).

Allow your plants plenty of space to develop. Plants are a lot like people - they need their space to flourish! Be aware of available indoor spaces that could also be utilised for growing. For example, if you have a sunny window sill, basil will appreciate the warmth of being indoors. Container Preparation It is important to use compost specially designed for containers, as this will retain water better and contain extra nutrients that your plants would ordinarily get from the ground. Check on compost packaging for soil or loam-based composts, extra nutrients or plant food and water-retaining granules.

If your property is over a few floors, it might be a perfect place to plant a climber vegetable such as beans on the lowest levels as you can allow them to grow up the property and use the different floors for easy harvesting. Be aware that beans will also require a cane to give them something to climb up. Layer stones at the bottom of pots to help excess water drain away and help prevent root rot. Deep While enthusiasm is a great quality in a gardener, pots are a good solution if the available floor do not be too ambitious in your planting. If you space is limited. Equally, different vegetables will plan too many plants it will result in crowding. This have different pot width requirements, so while will cause your plants to be weak, as they will be one courgette will need at least a 33cm-wide pot, in fierce competition for light, water and nutrients.

basil will only need a 15cm-wide pot. A 25cm pot should be ample for some beans, carrots or salad leaves. Stagger Planting If you plant lettuce across a few weeks, then you will be able to harvest it in stages, rather than having it all ready in one go. Decoration A popular trend amongst urban gardeners is to use quirky decorative features. A beloved old pair of wellies could be recycled as pots for carrots. Care Pots will dry out quickly so water often (but don't over water). Protect your vegetables from wind damage or pots blowing away, a common hazard when gardening high up, by weighting down pots and tying plants to canes or trellis.

Interview with Matt LeBlanc, Episodes Matt LeBlanc, the man who played Joey in Friends for ages, returns in arguably his funniest role ever for the new series of Episodes . Now in its third season, the award-winning BBC Two comedy sees the leading man play an exaggerated version of himself. Keen to understand what makes him tick, we sat down for a quick questioning. Does it get easier to talk about this fictional version of yourself? I'm kind of used to it now. It's easier in a sense to talk about it, but it is harder in the sense that the longer I do this, the more the lines get blurred between him and me, or me and him. You've always said you are happy for the writers to poke fun at you providing it's funny. Does any of it sting? No, it hasn't yet. The stuff we did last year about me getting overweight - that all really happened. I remember I was in Miami. You're under such a microscope in Hollywood that when you get some time off you don't want to have the fish with no sauce and the steamed vegetables.

stung a little. There was another that said "Fat LeBlanc". That was clever, I thought. How do you deal with that kind of thing? Fortunately, there are a lot of people to pick on. So if one week they're picking on you, the next week they forget all about you and move on to someone else. It's part of the ups and downs of Hollywood. For every good thing that happens, there's a bad thing to bounce it off. So it doesn't really matter.

Sometimes you want to have the pizza with the cheese and the extra, extra, extra everything and the alcohol that goes with it, and live life. There's a balance to it all, I guess. I remember I was at a hotel, and I was overweight. I was lying on a chaise, and I thought it was all private. This guy was in the pool, and he had a gym bag and a Two weeks of season two was filmed in LA, and this time half of season three was filmed in the UK. two-year-old year old son with him. What does that add to the show? He picks his son out of the water, sits him on the I think it enables us to open up the world of the edge of the pool, opens his gym bag, takes out show. As much as I like shooting in London - and I his camera and fires across the pool at me. It was love London - it doesn't look like Los Angeles at on the front page of the National Enquirer the all. So it's very tricky. In the first series we had to next day. The headline was "Beached Male". That do so many special effects in the show. Matt's

house in Malibu was in the woods north of London. The whole house was wrapped in a 30ft high green cloth so it could be made to look like California in post-production. And I thought this is insane. When they were done, it did look like it was on the beach in Malibu. So it's do-able. But if you are going to spend that money on special effects, you could spend it on filming in LA.

As Friends is becoming more distant, is the attention you are receiving calming down? Not really. There's a whole new generation of kids that are discovering it for the first time, so if anything it's ramping up again. I think it has this timeless thing about it because it's about a time in your life that everyone can relate to, when you're done with school but your life hasn't quite started, and your friends are your family, and you lean on Was there anything you did with Stephen them, and they become this sort of support Mangan while you were out there to give him the system. There aren't many things as popular as LA experience? Friends . It was pretty special to be a part of. I took him to Malibu in my Ferrari at about 130mph. He was a little scared. But I tried to give him something that was close to the show.

Expect the unexpected on your next Cruise In the old days of cruising, being able to find a fully equipped gym and an on-board cafe was considered the height of luxury but now these features are pretty standard. What is taking customers' breath away is the range of new features that make cruise ships stand out above the rest - offering a taste of excitement and surprise to holidays at sea. For example the Royal Caribbean's North Star, Quantum of the Seas, has a glass-encased gondola which holds up to 13 passengers at any one time, offering 360-degree views over the ocean from a 300m vantage point. Cruising is evolving to a point where it is almost unrecognisable from the days of the 1920s and 30s when simply a good meal at sea was considered to be an amazing feat. As more and more ships are being designed and constructed, we're starting to see features, activities, and attractions that were once mere pipe dreams now becoming spectacular realities. Bumper cars, skydiving simulators and the world's most talented performance artists are just some of the additional features we can expect to see on ships in the near future. So whatever your views of cruising, even as a regular sea traveller, they will change regularly as the imagination of the travel companies expands ever further.
