Why Hawaiian Kona Coffee Is A Must-Try For Coffee Fans Lots of people are familiar with at least the name of a famous Hawaiian gourmet brand of coffee, Kona coffee; even those who are not necessarily coffee lovers. This brew is completely different and very well liked; why? This coffee is both tasty and widely desired because of the location where the beans are grown and the way in which they are cultivated; it truly is something that every coffee drinker should try at some time. Hawaii's Big Island, on the slopes of the Mauna Loa and Hualalai volcanoes, is where Kona coffee is grown. This location supplies the ideal backdrop for coffee cultivation because of Hawaii's climate and the unique weather patterns that the Kona volcano slopes are exposed to. The sunlight is plentiful during the milder morning hours yet afternoon clouds and showers protect the crops from too much exposure to the sun; plus the volcanic soil is quite fertile. These perfect conditions are in short supply as the area is spread over a geographic area that is only a few miles wide and about 30 miles long. About two centuries ago is when coffee beans were first brought to the Kona region. Since then, production efforts have grown considerably, along with the reputation of this coffee. There are more than 700 Kona farms at the moment, many of which are small and run by families. This ensures that special attention is paid to the cultivation and preparation of the coffee beans. Even the picking of these beans is usually done by hand because the slopes on which the crops grow are simply too steep to support harvesting machinery. Coffee that stands out for both its distinctive taste and quality are the result. With growing space so limited and with harvesting taking a little additional work, it is easy to see how demand for coffee from the Kona region is always high. Coffee enthusiasts who have yet to try Kona but wish to should understand the distinction between Kona blends and pure Kona coffee. As little as 10 percent Kona beans are contained in most Kona blends with the rest of the beans being sourced from other countries or continents. Although enjoyable and often a little more affordable, these coffee blends do not represent the full character of real Kona brews. Packaging that plainly shows that 100 percent of the contents come from Kona is used for pure Kona coffee. For people who have drunk their share of it, the difference in flavor and smoothness should be apparent, however for those who don't live for their morning brew, this difference may be lost. Some buyers might be discouraged from trying 100 percent Kona blends because, as gourmet offerings, they cost more than other coffee blends do. The cost of owning land in Hawaii, costs associated with shipping to the mainland and wages paid to the workers who so carefully cultivate and prepare the coffee all increase the final price tag on the product which is the reason why Kona has a slightly higher price. However, considering that the unique environment of Hawaii and the dedicated labor of these small coffee farmers are both necessary to giving the coffee its delicious character, the small price difference is worthwhile. Coffee from Kona is a treat truly worth trying for anyone from the casual coffee consumer to the devoted habitual drinker. The conditions which help produce this coffee are really unique, which gives rise to a product with a taste and quality that aren't easily matched, even in the eyes of Hale Kai Lana
