PRE-THESIS 1. NATIONAL AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM: LOCATION: WASHINGTON D.C, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. SITE: It is located to south of the south of the National mall and to the north of Independence Avenue. AREA: 25acres. BUILT-UP AREA: 1, 61,145 sqft (14,970.9 m2).

• This alternation design is also used in the flooring design of the museum providing one story, double story spaces to get the viewers an overall view of the exhibits by changing their levels. • The hi-tech tubular steel supports are used for holding the ceiling glass and the curtain wall. • The shadow cast in the museum are not only by the artefacts but also a dynamic effect is created by the glass and the frame.

INTRODUCTION: • The national air and space museum of Smithsonian institution has a large collection of historic aircrafts of U.S. • The museum accommodates a total no of 61 aircrafts in the main building along with space related artefacts and 2000 small exhibits. • The museum is consisting of three floors in a height of 25.3m giving an average of 8.23m a floor. • The museum is divided in to 22 thematic galleries like early flight, milestone, World War, etc. • The museum also includes an IMAX theater of a 230 seat capacity for screening movies related to aviation. • The National Air and Space Museum is a center for research into the history and science of aviation and spaceflight, as well as planetary science and terrestrial geology and geophysics. SPACES OR AREAS:

ARCHITECTURAL CONSIDERATION: • The whole museum complex is elevated on long, low, two level terraces giving a strong base as in the classical manner. • The museum was design on this platform in complement with the surrounding buildings of National mall and independence Avenue. • Facing the mall are four monolithic blocks clad in same pink Tennessee marble that was used for the national gallery. • These are connected by a bronze glass longitudinal spine along the whole length of 635 feet of the building and rises through both floors of exhibition space. • Many materials like steel, wood, glass frames are mostly used in the building. • The museum is designed in the orientation of the sun paths.

• This creates a solid and void appearance on the mall facade of the museum whereas the independence avenue facade ha the glass replaced by cubic protrusion with small glass aperture. • This will reduce the southern retention by the building.

CONCLUSION: • The museum is having all the requirements and facilities which are used for the aerospace museums. • This museum is very well designed by the U.S government in 1976. • This museum is more based on architecture and it is having more open galleries in the museum and a theater.


2. AMERICAN AIR MUSEUM: LOCATION: UNITED KINGDOM. SITE: The museum is located in Duxford, Cambridge shire. AREA: 4 acres BUILT-UP AREA: 67,812.64 sqft (6300 m2). INTRODUCTION: • The American air museum is also called as IMPERIAL AIR MUSEUM. • Duxford houses the museum's large exhibits, including nearly 200 aircraft, military vehicles, artillery and minor naval vessels in seven main exhibition buildings. • The site also provides storage space for the museum's other collections of material such as film, photographs, documents, books and artefacts. • The site accommodates several British Army regimental museums, including those of the Parachute Regiment (named Airborne Assault) and the Royal Anglian Regiment. • The American air museum was designed by Sir Norman Foster and Chris Wise (Structural engineer). AREAS OR SPACES: 1.Flights gallery 2.Library 3.Display area 4.Control room 5.Games room for kids 6.Administration ARCHITECTURAL CONSIDERATION: • The building is shaped as a section of a torus, formed form a curved concrete roof 90m (300 feet) wide, 18.5m (61 feet) high and 100m (330 feet) deep. • The roof was constructed as a double-layer concrete shell, built in 924 precast reinforced concrete sections. • Inverted T-shaped sections provided the inner layer with further flat panels forming the outer layer. • The roof weights 6000 tones and is able to support suspended aircraft weighing up to 10 tones. • The roof appears to float above the buildings solid structure through 34 supporting steel arms that are set behind a continuous glazed strip at the base of the roof. • These steel arms collect all the forces from the roof, via an upper ring beam and to the A-Frame in-situ concrete abutment.

• Each arm transfers a load of up to 6000KN. • The arms are made up of 300mmX700mm box sections of fully welded plate up to 300mm thick.

• The museum is designed in the shape of an aero plane head shape. • It started in the year 1987 and completed in the year 1997.

CONCLUSION: • The museum is more dependent on structures than the architecture. • This museum mostly consists of only aircrafts rather than the choppers. • This is having huge openings and the glass facades in the front is used for the natural light and also used for the bearing of load with the space frame structure.

Time problem ---- bus terminal

 THE SEATING CAPACITY IS GIVEN FOR ALMOST 600 PEOPLE.  A REASTRUANT WHICH ACOMIDATES 50 PEOPLE AT A TIME.  THERE ARE 15 SHOPS FOR SHOPPING PURPOSE.

 THE TOTAL SITE WHICH IS GIVEN FOR THE TERMINAL IS 30 ACRES.  THE CONCEPT IS EVOLEVED FROM THE INSPIRATION OF THE KEY.  THE BUS TERMINAL HAVE A CAPACITY OF 25 CITY BUSES AT A TIME.

 FOR GOING TO THE PLATFORM WE HAVE A FOOTOVER BRIDGE TO CROSS IT FROM THE TERMINAL.  IN EACH PLATFORM WE HAVE A ICKET COUNTER AND ALSO SEATING FOR THE PEOPLE.

 THE INFORMATION CENTRE IS DESIGNED IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT LOOKS IN THE SHAPE OF A GUN.  THE GROUND FLOOR IS GIVEN FOR THE LIBRARY AND THE FIRST FLOOR IS GIVEN FOR THE DISPLAY GALLERY AND MEETING HALLS .  THE SITE IS HAVING TWO WAY AXIS SUCH AS FROM MAIN ROAD AND FROM THE NEIGHBOUR LAND WHICH IS A HOUSING SECTOR.  IT WORKS 24/7 SO FOR THAT WE HAVE AN UNDERGROUND PARKING ALSO.
