Progress Report Grades 4-7

Principles of Learning • Learning requires the active participation of the learner. • Learning is an individual and social process. • People learn in a variety of ways and at different rates.

The following information is provided as a guide to your child’s progress report:

Overview: The overview summarizes what your child has been taught in each reporting period. It includes the key learning outcomes which the teacher has selected to organize the program for each reporting period. The learning outcomes are prescribed by the Ministry of Education.

Individual Effort: We value and respect the uniqueness of each child. The symbols indicate the student’s effort in each subject.

Letter Grades: Letter grades are used to indicate a student’s level of performance in relation to prescribed learning outcomes.

Structured Written Comments: Structured written comments are an important, ongoing component of the teaching/learning cycle. They reflect the student’s progress in relationship to the prescribed learning outcomes selected for each reporting period (see enclosed). The structured written comments will describe, as appropriate:

What the student is able to do;

The areas requiring further attention or development;

Behaviour; including information on attitudes, work habits, effort and social responsibility.

Partners in Learning: This section provides an opportunity for parents and students to provide information and/or respond to the report card.

Ways of supporting the student’s learning at home and at school; and


INDIVIDUAL EFFORT GOOD (G) • Responsibility: All assignments turned in on time; student is ready to work and learn • Cooperation: Works well with other students and teacher(s) • Independence: Self-directed learner, takes appropriate initiative SATISFACTORY (S) • Responsibility: All assignments usually completed on time; student is usually ready to work and learn • Cooperation: Usually works well with other students and teacher(s) • Independence: Occasionally needs teacher direction to work independently NEEDS IMPROVEMENT (N) • Responsibility: Many assignments incomplete and late; Student is frequently not ready to work and learn • Cooperation: Often does not work well with other students and teacher(s) • Independence: Frequently needs teacher direction to work
