Boston Children’s Hospital ranks #1 on the U.S. News & World Report Pediatric Honor Roll and ranks first in 7 out of 10 evaluated specialties. No other hospital in the nation comes close, so families from every state and more than 100 countries travel to Boston Children’s for care.

It started with you—and your powerful decision to help. It was your effort and your bright spirit that made the 2015 Eversource Walk for Boston Children’s a success. You raised $1.5 million for the hospital— bringing health and hope to so many children. See for yourself in our Walk Impact Report. Thank you for all you do.

A family affair Six hours after Colin Newton was born, things went terribly wrong. He struggled to breathe and his body became limp. Doctors at his neighborhood hospital quickly transferred him to Boston Children’s neonatal intensive care unit.

And the Walk enabeled us to give back to the hospital that got our son home.” They invited their extended family to walk with them, raising $36,000. That’s when they learned Boston Children’s had done even more for their family— treating Colin’s great aunt Loretta in 1956.

Over the next 80 days, an expert team worked to combat Colin’s life-threatening medical issues, including myopathy, a condition that causes severe muscle weakness and developmental delays. One day, his doctor casually mentioned Colin going home. “I almost burst into tears, because it filled me with hope” said his mom, Erin. “We feared that he’d never use his nursery—that’d he’d never come home.” Now 1, Colin is home, getting stronger with help from Boston Children’s.

Boston Children’s repaired Loretta’s craniofacial deformity through surgery, then throughout her childhood, worked to improve her hearing and speech. “I wouldn’t be who I am today without Boston Children’s,” said Loretta. Loretta was one of 54 walkers on Colin on Walk day.

Team Colin. “At first, it was about

Colin,” said Loretta. “Then it was about me and Colin. Then it was about us and everybody else,

“For us, doing the Walk was a no-brainer,” said Erin. “We celebrated Colin’s first year of life at the Walk.

walking to say you’re not alone. We’re all family. ”

What can $1.5 million do? Backed by your support, these treatments and programs are just a few of the many that make a life-saving difference for kids.

Make hearts whole

Revolutionize emergency care

What used to be a lethal condition—an underdeveloped left heart—is now treatable. Boston Children’s experts pioneered a surgical procedure that triggers the heart’s main pumping chamber to grow, giving kids fully functioning hearts.

After losing a young patient despite providing by-the-book care, a Boston Children’s doctor had an idea: create a form of oxygen that can be injected into the bloodstream, bypassing the lungs. It would deliver oxygen to the body faster, when oxygen depletion could cause death or significant damage. Now in development, injectable oxygen could become a mainstay in emergency care.

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS)

Open ductus arteriosus Main pulmonary Small (hypoplastic) aorta

Atrial septal Underdeveloped left Septum

Bring play where it’s needed most

Save children’s vision

All kids deserve a safe place to play. Boston Children’s new Lorber Family Playground in Jackson Square provides one. With ziplines, swings, a handicapaccessible merry-go-round and more, kids of all ages and abilities find joy there. The playground, built near Martha Eliot Health Center in one of Boston’s neediest neighborhoods, is an example of our ongoing commitment to our community.

“Lazy” and misaligned eyes are the leading cause of preventable vision loss in young children. But the Pediatric Vision Scanner, developed by a Boston Children’s doctor, is allowing for earlier, easier screening. The portable, user-friendly device could ultimately eliminate child vision loss from these conditions.
