JULY 2018 | News SUMMER GARDEN TEA PARTY IN COWFOLD 2018
ATMS IN HENFIELD, WHAT NOW? NatWest has closed its doors for the final time in Henfield at the beginning of June and with the closure went their ATM. With Barclay’s still boarded-up and a statement on the future of the branch imminent, it leaves Henfield with no main bank ATMs. There is one ATM at the Shell Garage and in-store machines in One Stop and Budgens. Local people can also withdraw cash (and undertake other banking processes) at Henfield Post Office during opening hours. During the Gardens and Arts weekend (9th June) there was no cash available in the village; Budgens cashpoint was out of order and the Shell and One Stop machines were empty by early in the day. Local traders are concerned that the lack of banks and ATMs will have serious repercussions for the village. We have sent emails regarding the closure of the final ATM in the village to NatWest who responded with this press release from their representative Sean Palmer: “We understand that the decision to close a branch can be difficult for customers and colleagues who work in the branch. Since we announced the closure of this branch we have spent the six month notice period engaging with the local community and individual customers to ensure they are aware of all the alternative ways that they can bank with us. There are two free to use ATMs remaining in the town and we have a national agreement with the Post Office to provide our customers with a range of banking services. Customers can pay money in, take money out, check balances and business customers can get coinage. The closest Post Office is Henfield which is 0.06 miles away from the branch; there are 2 Post Offices within 3 miles of the branch. Our local Community Banker is also available to meet with customers and support them with all the alternative ways to bank”. We have pointed out the inaccuracies of the “two free to use ATMs in the village” part of their statement but at the time of going to print NatWest have still not responded, despite three emails requesting a correction. We have also communicated with our MP Nick Herbert on the subject and we hope he will be able to take the matter further for Henfield. Emma Osman, Editor

HAMFELDS REDUCING PLASTIC WASTE WITH ECO-VIE Hamfelds are delighted to be part of the worldwide campaign to minimise plastic and other toxic waste from entering our seas and going to landfill. I had already identified an interest from my customers for sensibly priced, genuinely chemical-free cleaning products but couldn’t source any suppliers. Little did I know that right under my nose Sally was working hard on her own independent range – eco-vie. There’s nothing in eco-vie products that you couldn’t eat! I’m not recommending that you do - but that’s how pure they are! Hamfelds will be offering this range of 12 products as an exclusive local supplier and can supply 5 litre containers on request, it will act as a depot for receiving bottles for refill to help minimalize plastic waste. CHRISTIAN AID WEEK REPORT This year’s reduced house-to-house Christian Aid Week collection produced just over £1750, well down from previous year’s figures of between £4000 and £5000, but still an excellent total from the roads covered in Henfield, Shermanbury and Woodmancote. Included was £200 from the lunch at Corpus Christi Hall, catered by Maureen Dexter with delicious home-made soup. Further donations will be welcome, either to Jackie and Peter Bates at Carselands, Woodmancote (01273 493172), from whom envelopes are still available, or direct to FREEPOST, Christian Aid. After more than 45 years of organising the annual CAW collection we are slowing down and are looking for a couple or individual (or group) to take on the task from next year - please ring us or email jandpbates@gmail.com. We will happily assist in a handover of duties. Peter Bates
