Our cover shows the Pedal for Henfield team looking happy and relaxed the night before they embarked on their marathon journey to Henfield from Paris. Read their story on page 30, how they battled the elements to reach their goal, as well as an incredible fundrasing total for the Henfield Haven and Henfield Leisure Centre. Their efforts are truly inspiring. We were sad to see the mess left after the ram-raid attack on Barclay’s Bank in Henfield High Street. Barclays have indicated that it’s business as usual in the branch, but understandably with recent bank closures and Barclays soon to be our ‘last bank standing’ in the village many people have concerns that this attack may hasten its demise. We really hope not. Please keep up to date by following our Facebook page and see the Sussex Police appeal for witnesses in the News section if you saw or heard anything that could help their investigations. You’ll notice BN5 is a little heavier this month, we have received a huge amount of editorial submissions and articles, this alongside an increase in advertisers has taken us to 80 pages. In future if we have a busy month BN5 will be a little bit bigger to fit everything in! We hope you enjoy the spring weather, it does feel as if the village is waking up in the sunshine. With lots of events, fairs and shows, our diary pages are packed with great things to do and see.

News | MAY 2018 NEW LINK ROAD (DEER PARK AND HENFIELD LEISURE CENTRE) We are moving ahead with our plans to construct a new link road between Deer Park and the Leisure Centre. The design will incorporate the link road between Deer Park and Henfield Leisure Centre including a pedestrian crossing close to the Youth Club car park. In addition, 32 additional parking spaces on east side of Henfield Leisure Centre will be created. The plan includes resurfacing and lower level bollard style lighting along the footpath which runs through the cemetery immediately adjacent to the new road and the creation of a cycleway which will also accommodate pushchairs, prams and scooters along the Parsonage track which runs parallel to the cemetery. We have recently invited tenders from a number of local contractors and subject to satisfactory responses we plan to start construction work in the summer of 2018. We will provide residents with more details once the tender process is completed. Anyone interested in the design details should refer to Horsham District Council Planning website under reference DC/16/2836. Plans are also available for inspection at the Parish Office. One day in early September last year Gary Burton walked into Worthing Hospital with his wife Alison. By the time they walked out, both their lives had changed forever. Being given a diagnosis of terminal bowel cancer with a 6-12 month time span was not what Gary thought that day would bring, but he and Alison have bravely faced the ensuing challenges and turmoil united and unflinching. Gary has endured many chemo sessions to prolong his life as much as possible, enjoying every moment as a bonus. Alison will be a member of two Henfield Joggers teams totalling 18 people, plus drivers and support team, who aim to scale Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Mount Snowdon in less than 24 hours, covering nearly 500 miles by road. HENFIELD FOOTBALL CLUB YOUTH TOURNAMENT Henfield Football Club attained FA Charter status a few years back and with over 200 youth players and 8 squads at youth level, the Club continues to grow. It is a big part of local children’s, parents’ and grandparents’ lives on match days! For the 6th consecutive year, Henfield FC are hosting a Youth Football Tournament on The Kings Field. The tournament, for Under 7s through to Under 14s, has attracted entries from across Sussex and beyond – and is being held over the week-end of Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 May. The tournament is run on a group basis, culminating in the finals at the end of each session (around 12.30pm and 5.30pm) on both days. We kick off on Saturday morning with the Under 7s and 14s; followed by the Under 9s & 13s in the afternoon. Sunday morning sees the Under 8s & 10s and the afternoon moves on to the Under 11s & 12s. Most age groups have a number of host Henfield FC squads competing – so please do put the dates in your diary to pop up and watch the matches (and cheer on our Henfield teams!) We naturally hope the week-end will be a success (please let it be dry!) – we are really grateful to the many local traders that have readily supported the Club by advertising in the 40 page full colour tournament programme or providing raffle prizes and we hope they too will benefit financially from our guests and visitors to the village. The tournament programme (£3) includes a free tea/coffee voucher and is packed with all the information you need. On site, we will have refreshments as well as a bouncy castle and the ever-popular ice cream van. Grateful thanks to HART and Henfield Medical Centre, who will be in attendance. With the numbers expected, there will inevitably be additional traffic leading to parking issues. As in previous years, we will have stewards around

the immediate area (Fabians Way, Northcroft, Deer Park, the Leisure & Medical Centres, Youth Club etc) to direct and assist as well as clear directional signage in place for the visiting squads. We apologise though in advance for any inconvenience that may be caused to local residents by the additional street parking and traffic, which we will endeavour to keep to an absolute minimum. News | MAY 2018 RACE NIGHT SUCCESS We recently had a very successful race night at St Peters School with about fifty people attending. The race man was fantastic and kept everyone entertained between races. Everyone enjoyed a really excellent ploughman’s, followed by homemade apple pie and cream. At half time we held a raffle with some fabulous prizes donated by businesses in the village. In fact, without their generosity we could not have held this event. SUSSEX PRAIRIES CELEBRATE 10TH BIRTHDAY! There will be ten candles on the Sussex Prairies Birthday cake this year as we celebrate ten years since our garden was created. It is hard to imagine we created our garden from scratch from Pauline’s parent’s farmland. It was designed by Pauline and Paul, two ordinary folk, and planted with forty of our friends and family in the space of 3 short weeks. All we had to go on was a bold risky idea that we would be creating something unique and a bit out of the ordinary. It was a huge leap into the unknown, but we were working with plants that we had been designing with for many years and we were using a style with which we had become familiar. And so, a big garden was created from a bold and ambitious idea. We are celebrating our birthday by offering our very supportive local community, 2018 season tickets at an incredible price of £15 for an individual and £30 for a family ticket (admits 2 adults and up to 3 children under the age of 16) Why not make your life a little bit more prairie this summer, for just 12 pence per day! HENFIELD TENNIS CLUB NEWS An amazing morning for St.Peter’s Henfield tennis players, who had entered 2 teams to play in the Sussex school’s shield tournament. This was the first time St.Peter’s had entered. After some really great tennis matches, in which the children played singles and doubles, the second team came third in their group, while the first team came second and qualified for the semi finals, in which they beat Lancing college 4-2. They played Little Horsted in the final and drew 3-3 and finally succumbed in the deciding ‘shoot out’, to place runner up for this year. The B team was selected most friendly team of the day (they kept smiling, whatever happened) and Joe Crawley also received the fair play medal.

HORSHAM DISTRICT YEAR OF CULTURE A Year of Culture is set to take place across the Horsham District during 2019 and everyone is invited to get involved. From Hilaire Belloc to Hepworth Brewery, Shipley Arts Festival to Shelley, The Capitol to Creative Assembly and everything in-between, the Horsham District has an exciting cultural offering. The Horsham District Year of Culture 2019, sponsored by Gatwick Airport and Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens, will aim to celebrate as much as can be squeezed into 365 days across the whole district. The Year of Culture will have events every month, taking place somewhere across the district to celebrate the many facets of culture that give this district its sparkle. MAY 2018 | News LLOYDS PHARMACY SERVICE In response to comments and complaints received about Lloyds Pharmacy in Henfield (including problems regarding errors with prescriptions and delays as well as messages or support for staff under pressure) we approached Lloyds Pharmacy for a response. The volume of correspondence we received from readers was too large for publication and we invite anyone with comments, positive or negative, to correspond directly with Lloyds Pharmacy on the email address in their statement. Alternatively, you can contact The General Pharmaceutical Council www.pharmacyregulation. org/content/our-role with any complaints. Statement from Kevin Shepherd, Area Manager: “The Pharmacy Manager and one of the area team have run listening groups with local people to understand specific concerns and we will be running those again over the next few weeks. Having listened to people’s concerns, we have taken a number of actions to reduce the workload of the in-store team so that they have more time to spend advising customers and fulfilling their prescriptions. We are also training and upskilling our colleagues and recruiting new team members. I visit the store regularly and so do other members of the regional team so that we can monitor the impact of these changes, meet our customers face to face and review the changing conditions in the pharmacy. I want people to know that we have listened to their concerns and that we are taking action but that we will continue to monitor the situation and make improvements where necessary. I am confident that our plan will address the issues that customers may have experienced, but I know we aren’t there yet. THE SILENT AUCTION Many years since the last Silent Auction was held in Henfield, it was revived this year in order to raise much needed funds for two very important charities. All the proceeds were shared between the Henfield Hall refurbishment project and the Henfield Haven. Held on 23 March at the Henfield Hall nearly 200 lots went under a silent hammer, from promises, vouchers, antiques, vintage items to useful modern day unused gifts. The event was attended by around 160 people, both residents of Henfield and from further afield. Bidding was brisk and the most wonderful sum of £5,248.26 was raised.

We want to especially thank all those who attended, for their generosity in supporting these causes so close to the heart of our village and making the event such a success. A great deal of fun was had by all who attended, as well as a wonderful supper provided by Lorette and her ladies. We were also fortunate to have been very generously supported by ‘Will and Wolfie’ aka Mike Ainscough and Chris Wolferstan playing their own brand of music from jazz to blues, they helped create a relaxed ambience to the evening and we want to thank them most sincerely. Many others have helped in different ways, they know who they are, and we want to say a big thank you to you all. LEST WE FORGET: SILENT SOLDIERS Nearly 1.1 million British and Empire service men and women were killed during the First World War before the guns fell silent on the 11th November 1918. The Sussex Royal British Legion is keen to ensure that we pay our respects 100 years later to those who gave so much. I am inviting sponsors for the Silent Soldier, which will appear around the village as our tribute to remember the huge sacrifice given, particularly by those from Henfield. The Silent Soldier is about 4ft 6in tall and comes with a post and screws. It will be placed around the village attached to buildings or on grass verges. The cost for each is £100 or to have your name on the plaque at the bottom £250. They will be displayed in the months leading up to Remembrance. NAT WEST MOBILE BANKING With the imminent closure of Nat West Henfield Branch in June, there will be a new Mobile Banking service visiting Henfield on a weekly basis from the 7th June. The Moblie Banking van (nicknamed ‘Hilly’) where you can make cash deposits and withdrawls, bill payments and account administration, will come to Henfield Cooper’s Way Car Park, from 10am-11am every Thursday morning. You will have read about the Horsham District plans for a 2019 Year of Culture event taking place across the area in this magazine (see earlier news item). A group of volunteers and members of Henfield Community Partnership are working away behind the scenes to make Henfield stand out on the Year of Culture map. These plans include a year-long programme showcasing all the great talents for the arts and culture in the village, which we all the local clubs and groups are invited to get involved with. Your club can align its event with the Henfield Year of Culture and we will publicise the event, which will link in with the village-wide programme of activities and events. The star attraction will be the “Henfield Festival” which will take place across 3 or 4 weeks during June and July. The whole event will include music, photography, theatre, sports events, living history, arts trails, nature walks and much more. veryone is welcome to join Tim’s family, friends and Henfield Cricket Club as they celebrate the life of Tim Parsons, much-loved local cricketer, father and husband, who passed away last year. Tim was one of Henfield’s finest cricketers, in his career he took a club record of over 2,000 wickets. This Memorial Match and day is a worthy tribute to him, to honour his career and contribution to Henfield Cricket Club and the village. The main event will be a match between the Tim Parson’s XI and the President’s XI, starting at 11am. The Henfield Cricket Club Colts will be playing from 1.30-3.30pm, and Sussex County Cricket Club will be providing Colts Training all day.
There will be an all-day barbeque from the Henfield BP Guild, with a live band from 4pm and a DJ from 6pm. There will be refreshments, a raffle and plenty of fun for everyone. You’re welcome to bring a picnic or enjoy the barbeque while watching some great cricket. Tim’s family are incredibly grateful to the wonderful St Barnabas House Hospice in Worthing, who looked after Tim last year, and all proceeds from the day will go directly to St. Barnabas. Pedal for Henfield I
n March this year, during one of the coldest spells of weather we’d seen in years, nine cyclists and their support team left Paris at 6am on a Friday morning to cycle for 15 hours through wind, rain, sun and sleet, achieving 165 miles in just one day. After four hours sleep in Dieppe they were up again and pedalling, back to Henfield via Newhaven. The final 25 miles were the worst, through driving snow in sub-zero temperatures with very little visibility. It was all to raise money for two charities; Henfield Leisure Centre and The Henfield Haven. But how did it all start? Back in 2012 Sammy Bremner (personal trainer at Henfield Leisure Centre) came up with the idea of running 49 marathons in 7 days, 21 of which were run by Sam, along with Tim Jones and Malcolm Lane. Eat your heart out, Eddie Izzard! The reason behind this incredible effort, which raised an amazing £26,000, was in support of Sammy and her sister Tracey Prescott’s nephew, Ashton, who was undergoing treatment for Leukaemia. The money went to CLIC Sargent and Henfield Leisure Centre. Since this time, Ashton has gone from strength to strength and happily his cancer is in remission. Since then, the various members of the 777 team, led by Tracey and Sammy, have come together for a host of challenges; marathons, 100-mile off-road bike rides, skydives, Tough Mudders and night bike rides, raising approximately £62,000 to date for local and national charities. 3 0 | B N 5 M A GA ZINE
Tracey was the driving force behind the Pedal for Henfield challenge. Anyone who knows her risks being coerced, convinced, charmed and sometimes even arm-twisted into joining her in one of her adventures. With a huge smile, her favourite phrase, ‘come on, you can do it’ and a reminder that it’s ALWAYS for a fantastic cause, Tracey will have you signing away your sanity in the blink of an eye! This most recent challenge has been incredibly tough. When it was planned the team had no idea that weather conditions were set to be some of the worst we’d ever seen in March, alongside plenty of Ditchling Beacon-esque hills on the rural route they’d chosen. The Dream Team cycling alongside Tracey and Sammy were; Adrian Hillman, Claire and Rob Proud, Douglas Campbell, Bek Seager, Thomas Kemp and Bob Beatty, with the invaluable support of Sandra Parsons for medical assistance and Steve Prescott who drove the support van. The team had varying levels of experience but one thing in common; the raw determination to complete the journey, whatever the conditions. And complete it they did. They arrived to a heroes welcome at Rushfields Café for cake and champagne on Saturday lunchtime, the exhaustion etched on their faces made it clear that the journey had been hard. Some had cycled through unbearable pain, others had challenged their fitness levels beyond anything they’d done

before. And it wasn’t over; they continued back to Henfield Leisure Centre to complete one last triumphant spin class! The final total, which went beyond £17,000 for the combined charities, was absolutely incredible. They wouldn’t have been able to do it without the support of local businesses and individuals, whose sponsorship enabled the team to donate their costs straight to the charity. Thank you’s go to: Rushfields Farm Shop, Stevens Lettings, Clif Bars, Helen Boosey, Henfield Hire, GR Teamwear, Alltime Catering, Gatwick Group, Jeremy’s of Henfield, Prescott Recovery, The White Hart, Coles Automotive, C & K Electrical, Peewees Hair, John Murray Butchers, Barratt Homes, Grommets Ltd and The George Hotel. These businesses all played a role; donating raffle prizes, paying for fuel and accommodation, supplying food and sponsoring spin classes. Both charities are enormously grateful for their support. While the cyclists were pedalling from Paris a group of local people at Henfield Leisure Centre were also raising money, by participating in Spinathons. Some had never sat on a spin bike before while others were regulars at the classes. An enormous amount of money was raised, with some notable participants completing multiple classes. Richard Kemp completed five back to back classes, Jo Rodway, Alison Price and Rosie Lee pedalled all day on Saturday to complete nine classes, while Yvonne

Gander and Alyssa Bull completed an incredible 19 spin classes! The event closed after the final class with an auction at Henfield Leisure Centre, hosted by Heart FM’s Jack the Lad, who helped to generate even more money for the two causes. At the beginning of the challenge, the team committed to long evenings training in all weathers while we were warm and cosy inside. In return, they experienced one of the most rewarding journeys of their lives. There were tears of frustration and utter exhaustion as well as incredible euphoria and the creation of lasting friendships. Pedal for Henfield has achieved a huge amount for Henfield, thank you and congratulations to everyone involved. Emma Osman

e’re pleased to see a new shop on Henfield High Street; Gallery BN5 opened in the middle of April in the former Henfield Furnishings and Cookshop premises. The gallery is a cooperative of local artists, launched by two members of Henfield Art Club, Elvira Watson and Margaret Thorpe-Hall, who saw the shop standing empty and wanted to utilise the space in a positive way for the village. It’s a simple concept; individual local artists can hire a ‘space’ and take advantage of window displays by rotation for a small rental and a small commission percentage. They also give their time to ‘man’ the shop for short periods each month. The happy advantage of the artists whose work is on display taking care of ‘front of house’ is that gallery visitors and customers can actually meet the artist and find out about their work. There will be artist ‘painting in’ sessions by members of Henfield Art Club every fortnight, allowing visitors to watch the creative process unfold. The idea is to display a diverse range of artwork using different mediums, as well as sculpture, jewellery, wood crafting and glass work, to keep the gallery everchanging and interesting. A point of inspiration for others, and a beautiful way to fill a prominent shop in our busy high street! Their catchphrase has become “run by artists, for 3 6 | B N 5 M A GA ZINE
the artists” and this feeling of building a creative community is what makes them different. They’ve gained the support of local suppliers Seawhite of Brighton, who are sponsoring their competition to create a logo for their packaging. The lucky winner of £100 Seawhite voucher, will be chosen from local secondary school artists who have been set the project. We’ll let you know who the winner is in a future issue of BN5! Elvira has always painted and turned to oils after she retired, which is her medium of choice. Her sister is a professional artist and her mother an accomplished painter, so she clearly has some good family genes! “We are overwhelmed by the response to our idea and the whole project is so exciting and moving so fast!” said Elvira. “Malcolm and Angela have been incredibly supportive, the space is just perfect with three lovely windows and a perfect gallery layout. We are indebted to them for allowing us to use their wonderful shop for our gallery.” “I love Henfield and it was sad to see the village losing some key shops,” said Margaret. “We want to help keep the village alive and vibrant and this is a perfect opportunity for us to combine our love of art and creating art while filling an empty high street shop.” Elvira and Margaret are in contact with all the local art and photographic clubs, not just Henfield, and welcome enquiries from other local artists. A recent post on the BN5 magazine Facebook page created a deluge of interest and new artists coming forward, so there is clearly a strong, positive need for such a space. TONY ADFIELD 1930 - 2018
T
ony Adfield, a much loved Henfield man, passed away on 2nd March. Tony loved his cricket and was President of the Henfield Cricket Club as well as Parade Marshal at Henfield’s Remembrance Parade for many years. He was involved with Henfield Football Club as well as at County and District level. Many people knew Tony, he always loved to stop for a chat and was always interested in village life. Tony was fascinated by local history and he wrote for BN5 magazine on more than one occasion, firstly about the Bailey bridges on the River Adur in Henfield which were built during the war, and later he wrote a fascinating tale of all the unexploded bombs which had fallen in Henfield! He was a wealth of information and we are privileged to have heard his stories. We asked Mike Morgan on behalf of the Royal British Legion, Simon Price from Henfield Football Club and Conway Thorns from Henfield Cricket Club to tell us about his contribution to their organisations.

In the early 1990’s Henfield Parish Council took over the organisation of the Remembrance Parade from the Henfield Branch of the Royal British Legion which had been disbanded. A Parade Marshal was required and it was then that I first met Tony. We could not have had anyone better. He immediately put his own stamp onto the Parade but took into account its past history. Whilst by its very nature it had to have formality, Tony was very keen to make it inclusive. I remember a youngster saying that they were concerned about him shouting at them - but he was quick to reassure them that he just needed to make sure that everyone could hear him! And yes they could. He very reluctantly had to give up this role in 2009 due to health issues, with trepidation I took over the role. Tony helped me tremendously in making sure that I knew the ropes and whilst he was a very hard act to follow and I could not match his voice, I have been very proud to follow in his footsteps.
Simon Price, Henfield Football Club
Tony was involved with the Sussex County FA for many years, and latterly a Life Member, showing just how much the Association valued his work. He was Chairman of the Association in 1972/73, and under his leadership the Association thrived. He continued to support the Association on Committee, Council & by attending Rep Matches and Cup Finals into his later years. From 1963 Tony was the Honorary Treasurer, Registration Secretary, and Representative of the Horsham & District FA to the Sussex County FA. He served as Secretary from 1970 until 1982 and was made a Vice President of the West Sussex FL in 1982 and President in 1997 until 2009, and

during this time in recognition of his service he was made a Life Member of the League in 2004. He was a familiar figure on the sidelines, he quite often voiced his frustration at our rather gung-ho defending! The measure of the man was that he was also one of the first to congratulate me on our achievements when we had secured back-to-back promotions to the Premier Division. You could tell he was proud of his village, and the village is proud of his legacy.
Conway Thorns, Henfield Cricket Club
Tony was a very enthusiastic cricketer playing mainly in Henfield’s 2nd XI from 1955 through to 1968. His main attribute was in organisation and administration, this he combined very well with playing. with spells as Vice-Captain and Captain of the 2nd XI. He combined these posts with the Fixture Secretary role and after retiring from playing he became Club Treasurer from 1987 -1998. In 2008 he became the sixth president since the war, stepping down only a few months before he passed away. Latterly every week-end Tony could always be found sitting at ‘his table’ just inside the main pavilion door expounding the virtues or otherwise of the various goings on, on the field of play, while enjoying one of Mon’s or Olga’s teas. Tony was in his element as the president working tireless for the club, he will be missed by many. Emma Osman

sunshine to Sussex bringing some Brazilian
SINCE Nilton Campos arrived at The Wheatsheaf from London 18 months ago (or more accurately, from London via New York and Brazil), the pub and restaurant has taken on a new lease of life. Just like his vibrant food, Nilton has been warmly welcomed by local people and has made a colourful mark on the Sussex restaurant map. Nilton said; “When I moved here I admit I was worried about how the concept of our Brazilian food would be received in the countryside and how we’d be welcomed. I really shouldn’t have given it a second thought; we’ve made lots of friends and we welcome regulars and returning customers from around the area as well as Brighton, Hove, Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill, we seem to have found a real niche!” A warm welcome is at the heart of the Wheatsheaf experience, along with the simple pleasures of sharing delicious food with friends. Nilton was raised in a big and boisterous family where sharing hearty food around the kitchen table was central to family life. When I ask him who his ‘food hero’ is, I am not surprised by his answer. “My mum, Dalva, is my biggest influence. I was raised in the countryside in Brazil and from a very young age I had responsibility for growing the family’s vegetables and herbs in our garden. For my mum, food was like a religion; we ate together and the kitchen was the heart of our home. I hope I’ve brought some of this spirit to the Wheatsheaf, a place of happiness, good food, friendship, laughter and family.”
Although his family table was over 5,000 miles away from Sussex, many of us will recognise Nilton’s family traditions from our own childhoods. Nilton is a country boy at heart, when he redesigned the Wheatsheaf signs his main thoughts were to pay homage to the land and those who work on it, hence the strong arm and sheaves of wheat symbolised on the logo. Nilton commented; “Many of our customers are farmers and those who work the Sussex land. I respect that and want to make sure we do justice to the good Sussex produce grown and created in the area.” The traditional Moqueca from head chef Carlos’s hometown Espirito Santo (a mild prawn, fish and coconut curry) is probably the Wheatsheaf’s most popular dish, made using fish from Newhaven and herbs and vegetables from Jeremy’s (the coconut milk has travelled a little further!). The pulled-pork croquettes are made from pork from the Handcross Butcher piled onto locally grown salad leaves. “I have a good reason to support other local businesses, and that’s down to quality. Jeremy’s ingredients are so fresh and he will always source the unusual ingredients we need, and the Stone Bass we sourced recently from Newhaven has been exceptional.” Nilton’s passion for his cooking and love of ingredients is evident when he explains his recipe for Crispy Polenta, something I admit I find impossible to cook. Not to give all his secrets away, but apparently I’ve been failing completely; it’s

down to the right sized grains of organic (it must be organic) polenta, cooked for exactly the right amount of time, with good parmesan, salt, pepper and homemade stock. It’s like a risotto; simple when you know how, although I think I’m well advised to pop along to the Wheatsheaf rather than try again myself! The quality of the food is referred to time and time again on the Wheatsheaf’s Tripadvisor page, overwhelmingly visitors refer to the delicious meals, welcoming service and generous portions. From family Sunday lunches rounded off with sticky toffee pudding to evenings partying with friends and eating paella, customers comment on the excellent service, how children are made very welcome and how they’re looking forward to returning again. High praise indeed, and well deserved, because after 27 years as a chef Nilton knows one of the hardest parts is to keep customers coming back again and again. The last 18 months have been full-on for Nilton and the team, he believes the key to success is “always finding something new, never standing still”. When it came to the first anniversary, Nilton decided it was time to party Brazilian style; he brought the Carnival to Henfield, literally! There were samba drummers and Brazilian dancers complete with diamanté costumes and feathered headdresses that almost hit the ceiling. Mojitos and Caipirinhas flowed and dishes of mouthwatering food covered the tables. Nilton is always planning new ideas and there is certainly never a dull moment; look out for the Saturday night Jazz nights, or for the more adventurous the upcoming Burlesque night sounds like enormous fun! See BN5 or the Wheatsheaf Facebook page for latest events. Smaller guests are not forgotten, the wooden play pirate ship built last year has been an enormous hit. Four-legged friends are welcome too; Nilton has two springer spaniels himself and loves to see walkers bringing their dogs to the Wheatsheaf. Nilton is now firmly rooted in the Sussex countryside and not regretting his move from the Big Smoke, not least when he takes his two dogs, Frisbee and Lulu, to walk across the fields and over the South Downs. A different home and a different landscape, but one he has grown to love. Emma Osman

Little Shop of Horrors T he Henfield Theatre Company (HTC) has been blazing a trail of late with its award winning and much acclaimed productions. The Alan Ayckbourn play, Confusions, which was staged in March, was a great success. It featured some hilarious scenes but the one at the end will be remembered by all who were there; it involved the total collapse of the village fete marquee, at almost the same moment as the local dignitary was receiving electric shocks from the microphone while trying to make her speech! Some audience members are known to have attended twice – it was so good. HTC will be turning up the comedy even higher, and adding beautiful music and a zany storyline for the May show – bring on the large, blood-thirsty, talking, singing plant from outer space! Little Shop of Horrors, written by Howard Ashman and set to music by Alan Menken, had its debut in New York in 1982 when it played in a relatively small theatre to rave reviews, winning several awards and running at that venue for five years. It has since played around the world and been a smash hit in many countries. This satirical show is a joy to watch and listen to and certainly cannot be taken very seriously. It pokes fun at science fiction and perhaps even at the concept of the musical. The score is deliberately in the style of 1960s pop and will have everyone’s feet tapping in no time. The story is set

mainly in a flower shop where Seymour works. The shy shop assistant has a crush on his colleague Audrey but struggles to develop the relationship. One day he happens upon a strange plant, fairly small at first, but it grows dramatically when given its favourite food… blood! Seymour names the plant Audrey II and it seems destined to take over his life. The Henfield production is directed by Graeme Muncer, a well known face on the Henfield stage, most recently seen in Confusions. He is also an experienced director and his productions tend to be characterised by that vital ingredient… fun! Graeme is ably supported by David Barnett, as musical director, and Alice Forward, as choreographer. With the very talented cast that they have behind them, this is going to be a great show. Little Shop of Horrors plays at The Henfield Hall from Wednesday 16 to Saturday 19 May, starting at 7.30pm. HENFIELD NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN UPDATE
T
he main activity of the Steering Group and the Focus Group members has been work on assessing the 32 potential development sites that came forward after our call for sites at the later part of last year. Each site has been subject to a number of site visits and to scrutiny that involves up to 78 questions based upon the site assessment format favoured by Horsham District Council (HDC). Site assessment is a major element of the plan process that will form an important part of our evidence base. In addition we will also be preparing a site summary sheet including a location plan and photos. You will have the opportunity to see this work at our open day events and give us your views. The open days will be held on Saturday 5 May from 09.30am until 12.30pm and on Tuesday 8 May from 6.30pm until 9.30pm in the Garden Room of the Henfield Hall. This is an essential part of the process and your involvement is important, so please try and attend. Our Housing Needs Assessment, carried out by AECOM, indicated that Henfield should bring forward between 272 and 285 homes during the plan period up to 2031. This number will be reduced by the 12 extra homes that have come forward with the uplift in housing numbers on the Barratt`s site in West End Lane from 160 homes to 172 homes. We still consider that the figures do not take into consideration the major developments that have taken place in Henfield since 2011, namely Phase 3 of Parsonage Farm, Land East of Manor Close and the Barratt`s site in West End Lane. All of these sites contributed to the housing supply figure of

16,000 for the District, but which we feel also contributes to Henfield`s own housing needs. Work is still ongoing on this topic with further meetings with HDC who are scrutinising our assessment of the 32 potential sites. A sub-group of members has been undertaking work to establish policies that will help guide the direction of our plan which is an important aspect to safeguarding our community’s future. A Sustainability Appraisal/ Strategic Environmental Assessment (SA/SEA) is being undertaken by HDC using the services of Enplan, a planning consultant. A Sustainability Appraisal is a systematic process whose role is to promote sustainable development by assessing the extent to which the emerging plan, when judged against reasonable alternatives, will help to achieve relevant environmental, economic and social objectives. The SEA is a document relating to environmental issues and how they may be assessed so that any impact can be measured. The Scoping report, the first part of the process, went out to statutory consultees from 6 March until 10 April and gave them the opportunity to determine what aspects the SEA should cover. We will also be applying to Locality, a central government organisation, for additional funding in the new financial year. he ever-popular Floral Fringe Fair 2018 is taking place on the weekend of June 2nd & 3rd at Knepp Castle, Shipley from 10.30am-5pm. The fair is quirky and eclectic with a wildlife theme and a vintage twist, with something for everyone in the beautiful surroundings of Knepp Castle. Floral Fringe is renowned for its fabulous stalls – you’ll find all sorts of wonderful things to see and buy, with the added pleasure of being able to chat to the stallholders, many of whom have created what they’re selling and have a passion for their product. For those with a love of the retro you’ll also find a treasure trove of vintage stalls. This year we’ve introduced a strong Steampunk twist to the Fair, we love this fascinating genre that echoes with our recycle, re-love ethos and generally eccentric themes! The fair is becoming something of a foodiefavourite, with stalls selling local produce and delicious treats. Why not bring your picnic basket and rug and buy all the ingredients for your feast from the numerous street food stalls at the fair? You can picnic by the lake or eat in our fabulous pop-up tearoom, or spend time in the local ale tent! You can choose from gourmet fishfinger sandwiches with nori batter, barbecues, woodfired oven pizzas, vegan galettes, quiches, pies, cheeses, breads and smoked meat. Coffee, teas, gin cocktails, Pimms, a selection of cakes, icecream, chocolate, marshmallows and home-made fudge - mmm!

Well behaved dogs on leads positively welcomed, but please remember there are free roaming cattle, sheep, ponies, geese and deer which may have young, so leads are essential at all times. And your pooches aren’t forgotten – there are several stalls selling delicious doggy treats for good dogs, plus handmade collars and leads. Knepp Castle is undergoing a nationally important re-wilding project and there will be the chance to learn more about this at the fair. Wildlife safaris have recently been launched on the estate and there is a well-equipped luxury campsite. At the Floral Fringe Fair we celebrate everything that is quintessentially English and quirky; the great outdoors, gardens and gardening. We celebrate talented craftspeople and todays artists as well as the craftspeople of a bygone era. You’ll find great music from local musicians, as well as plenty of dancing! Visitors last year described us variously as; ‘unique, eclectic, quirky, quality, informative and friendly’. Entry is £7.50 per person, £2 for children under 14 and children under 4 free. Is your smart phone giving you a pain in the neck? A recent article in the journal ‘Spine’ noted the rising number of patients consulting healthcare professionals with neck and upper back pain. Patients in the younger age group are showing changes in the neck which would be expected in the older age groups. One common feature among these patients is prolonged smart phone use, which involves users spending long periods of time looking down at a hand held device. Another study from Canada reported that 84% of their study subjects reported pain most commonly at the base of the thumb and significant associations were identified between the total time being spent using a mobile device and pain in the neck and shoulder. A Swedish study also found cross sectional association between text messaging and reported ongoing symptoms in the neck, shoulder and arms. Osteopaths commonly treat patients complaining of neck and shoulder pain. So, if any of this is sounding familiar please do give us a call! This annual flagship Show of the South of England Agricultural Society, a charity that funds and supports agricultural education and countryside learning, brings town and country together so that visitors can enjoy a close up of the very best in British agriculture, horticulture, forestry, equestrianism, rural crafts and skills combined with superb family entertainment and shopping. This year’s unmissable main ring attraction is the famous and renowned Atkinson Action Horses. Best known for their appearances in television series Poldark, Peaky Blinders and Victoria, the Atkinson Action team will be an exciting new addition to this year’s Show, with visitors able to meet both horses and riders in between performances taking place twice a day. Other firm family favourites include the highenergy, micro-sized Shetland Pony Grand National; popular hound parades; world-class show jumping; impressive heavy horse turnouts and the amazing livestock display, with expert commentary showing the best of breed in beef and dairy cattle, sheep, pigs and goats. G
eneral Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the new governing legislation for collecting and processing personal data in the EU. It comes into effect on 25 May for all EU member states and the Government has stated that it will definitely be applied in the UK.
Current legislation, including the UK’s Data Protection Act 1998, was enacted before online services and cloud technology were widely used, so key points about protecting people’s data were not covered. GDPR will give individuals more control over the use of their personal data and provides clearer guidance on how people’s data can and should – and should not – be used. It is important to develop a data breach response plan, so that response to a breach is prompt and efficient. Data controllers have a duty to notify the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) within 72 hours if personal data has been lost, destroyed or accessed without authority. For the first time, data processors (and not just data controllers) will have obligations under GDPR. Agreements with data processors will need to be more detailed. Currently the maximum fine which can be imposed by the ICO is £500,000. This will increase significantly under GDPR. The maximum fine available for a serious breach of GDPR will be 4% of worldwide turnover or €20 million, whichever is higher. Employers will need to carry out audits of the employee personal data, they collect and process, to ensure that it meets GDPR conditions for employment consent. For employers, the new requirements mean that generic consents (for example, those contained in the body of an employment contract) will not be a valid legal basis to justify processing employee personal data. Regulators will have the ability to impose a wide range of sanctions, including specific compliance orders and a ban on processing personal data. Additionally, organisations that breach GDPR may be subject to private claims for compensation by individuals or legal bodies on behalf of individuals. Even after the UK exits the EU, GDPR will continue to apply directly to organisations established in the EU (for example, international organisations with an EU presence). It will also apply to those organisations established outside the EU that process personal data of EU individuals. It is also likely that after the UK leaves the EU, the UK will seek to maintain the level of protection of personal
data. This would involve either continuing to apply GDPR, or implementing data protection legislation with an equivalent level of protection to that of GDPR. Data protection is undeniably the subject of many a boardroom conversation and a clear reliable interpretation of the GDPR is vital. However, as the 25 May compliance deadline approaches, there still seems to be a lot of confusion around consent. Organisations seem to have been given varying advice on what they should do ahead of the deadline to prepare for the GDPR. Some think they need to inform their customers and supporters that their data is held and might be processed in the future, and get agreement. Some are being encouraged to get reconfirmed consent by specifically opting in. Plenty of highprofile organisations have emailed their database asking them to opt in or receive no further emails. The question organisations most frequently ask is: “Should we ask our supporters to re-consent?” Referring to the law as it stands now, specifically the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulation (PECR) - this states that an organisation cannot send a marketing email to a person without clear prior consent. Consent is considered valid if the data subject: understands how their personal data will be used;
freely gives consent by a positive action; specifically consents; and has been informed of their rights. If the personal data in your database was collected according to the above criteria, you probably have reliable grounds for processing the data. You can continue doing this ‘for the time being’, as consent doesn’t automatically lapse. But you must uphold the rights of data subjects by allowing them to easily opt out. Let’s say you have an engaging relationship with a data subject, perhaps they donate occasionally or have bought a product or service from you. They expect you to process their data and aren’t surprised to hear from you now and then. You believe you do have consent. Do you need to send them a re-consent email? Or are they effectively already opted in? The PECR says that sending an email asking for consent is effectively marketing. So, if an organisation is sending marketing communications without consent, this could be unlawful and a breach of
PECR. This could lead to enforcement action by the Information Commissioner’s Office. Surely if consent is already held, it’s unnecessary to ask for it again and in turn it’s confusing for the recipient! In short GDPR is a potential minefield – and whilst the ICO will target the big boys in the first year, smaller organisations (including charities and membership bodies) need to ensure that they have at least started their GDPR ‘journey’ before 25 May.
