KEEPING IN THE KNOW AT OCYC

Volunteers Needed - Membership Committee

The Semaphore comes out each month during the season. You can receive it in print form or by email.

Volunteers are needed to make up an official Membership Committee, as outlined in the OCYC By-Laws. PCs and Members are needed to meet with applicants for membership (either in person at the club or virtually) to discuss applicants interest in the club, familiarize applicants with Club activities, answer any questions they may have, and give a tour of the club (if in person). A PC and at least one member would be present at these “interviews”. The time commitment would be 1-2 hours for each meeting with an applicant. We hope to have enough volunteers so that each member would not be asked to do this more than once or twice during the calendar year. Training would be provided for members. This is a great opportunity for members (singles and couples of all ages) to share their enthusiasm for the Club as well as their experience as members, and to meet new friends.

Adult Laser and Sunfish Racing Ocean City Yacht Club offers fun and informal Adult Laser and Sunfish races during the summer months just off the OCYC dock. Races run every other Tuesday June - September. Races begin at (or close) to 6:30 pm. Hope to see you there!

Adult Sailing Education and Access Ocean City Yacht Club and its sailing members are planning a number of initiatives to help provide sailing education and access for members who wish to experience sailing on the Great Egg Harbor Bay. Many of our experienced sailing volunteers will be working to setup up a number of offerings to meet our goal to provide sailing access for all members. The programs are listed below followed by detailed descriptions. We plan to kick off the program with an Open House. So please come and join us.

Open House - Date – Saturday June 18 from 10:00 – 4:00 - activities include: •

Introduce our fleet consisting of J22, Lightning’s and 420’s.

•

Choose a ride on the boat of your choice

•

General Sailing Instruction

•

Race Committee Demonstration

Adult Sailing Lessons – Hosted by experienced member volunteers.

Offered Thursday evenings (3 classes) 5:00 – 7:00.

•

Schedule (July and August Sessions) – posted online

•

Boats: American 18 and J22

•

Limit 6 students per session.

•

Learn to Sail materials will be provided

Friday Bay Series – Crew positions aboard the club J22 and other resident boats will be made available whenever possible.

•

Offered during each Bay Series predominately Friday evenings. Bay Sailing Series schedule is posted online.

•

The intent is to provide racing access for inexperienced OCYC sailing members.

•

Saturday Boat Rides and Education - Experience 1 hour boat ride with one of our volunteer skippers. Try your hand at the tiller. Learn along the way, as our skippers will explain the intricacies of sailing.

•

Offered Saturdays - 3 sessions per day 12:00 to 3:00.

•

Schedule – 3 events offered during the summer. Schedule will be announced based on weather and tides.

•

Limit 3-4 depending on complement (must be over 10 year of age)

All participants in the programs must be able to swim and will be required to wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket.

Reasonable fees will be required for each program to help with boat maintenance and any related staffing costs.

JUNIOR SAILIING Linda Mroz Junior Sailing Chairperson With a taste of summerlike weather the weekend of May 21st, I think we all felt a touch of excitement and anticipation as the official start of summer was only a month away.

As we enter the month of June, our young sailors can look forward to a fun filled summer by taking part in the Junior Sailing Program. Lessons are scheduled to begin the week of June 20th.

Our parent orientation will take place on Saturday, June 18th in the snack bar area of the yacht club at 10:00 AM. All parents are encouraged to come out and meet our instructors and hear about what we have planned for the upcoming summer. During that time any questions you might have can be answered.

Registration remans open on our website so any of you who are still interested in enrolling your child in junior sailing may do so. Currently, we have over 40 young sailors who can look forward to making new friends and reuniting with old ones.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, June 18th!

Fishing for Kids Day – June 26th

We are looking forward to our annual Fishing For Kids Day, scheduled for Sunday, June 26 th.

The event, which started in 1993 and is now in its 29th year, is sponsored jointly by the OCYC and the OC Marlin and Tuna Club.

This year, over 110 disadvantaged kids and their families have signed up for a day of fishing in the bays behind OC. Beginning on Sunday morning at 9:00, the 25 volunteer skippers and their mates will be boarding the families from the Club dock. Then, hopefully, after catching loads of fish, the boats will return to the dock so everyone can enjoy a hearty lunch, courtesy of our generous chef, Bill McGinnity.

The purpose of the event is to add some joy to these families who, through no fault of their own, have been dealt a tough hand. Having a child with a disability is difficult, not only for the child, but also for the parents and siblings. So, we hope that a carefree day of fishing on the beautiful OC bay will bring some joy into their lives and create a lasting memory for all. It’s also a way for the members of both the OCYC and the OCM&TC to give back a little of the enormous good fortune with which we’ve been blessed.

Feel free to stop over to watch the activities. And look for an email requesting your help on the dock that morning.

Monkeypox By: Dr. Judy Larkin Does the general public need to worry about monkeypox? Probably not.

Monkeypox is a viral infection that results in a rash similar to smallpox. Its person to person spread and mortality are much less than smallpox but its similarity to smallpox makes it of concern for bioterrorism.

Monkeypox is usually geographically limited to parts of Africa. The new outbreak with cases in the US, Australia, Canada and Europe has caused recent concern. Authorities are looking at how the new cases have spread since human to human spread is uncommon.

Monkeypox can be asymptomatic. When it does cause symptoms they include fevers, chills, enlarged lymph nodes, headaches and muscle aches. There is a characteristic rash that can blister and look like smallpox or chickenpox. Most patients have mild disease and recover without medical intervention. For those who are more seriously ill, there are antiviral medications that may be helpful.

In Africa where most identified cases have occurred, mortality depends on the strain of monkeypox and individual risk factors. It can be as high as 10%.

Transmission is usually from animals to humans. Although called monkeypox, it is thought to be harbored in rodents including prairie dogs, and certain species of African squirrels, mice and rats. It can be spread by touching an infected animal, cleaning an infected animal’s cage, or from a bite or a scratch. Contact with materials that have been in contact with these animals can also lead to illness.

Human to human spread may be from contact with infectious skin lesions or from prolonged face to face contact since it can be spread in respiratory droplets. Some of the most recent cases seem to have spread during sexual contact between men who have sex with men.

Individuals who are over 50 years old were probably vaccinated for smallpox as a child. The smallpox vaccine may provide some protection from monkeypox. Smallpox vaccine was last used for the general population in the early to mid 1970’s.

It is important that the general public is aware of unusual infections but it is very unlikely that monkeypox will spread like COVID 19 or influenza.
