Grand Union Canal The trunk route of Britain's canal network, the picturesque Grand Union links London through the Chilterns with Birmingham via the longest single canal in Britain. As the main line from London to the Midlands, the Grand Union Canal was once one of the busiest in the country. Today, its charm lies in its diversity: from the centre of London through the Chiltern Hills, rural Northamptonshire and Warwickshire, and into the suburbs of Birmingham, it offers a wide variety of landscapes, wildlife, architecture, historic craft and buildings. www.waterscape.com/canals-and-rivers/grand-union-canal Waterside Services Willowtree Marina

Tidal Thames The tidal River Thames, between Teddington and the North Sea, is Britain’s busiest inland waterway with 20,000 ship movements each year along its 95 mile length. It’s also a centre of excellence for rowing; a home to around 70 leisure craft clubs and marinas; an iconic destination for visiting boats; and host to 50 sporting events each year. The tidal Thames is a dynamic environment, with currents in some areas reaching four knots and a tidal rise and fall of up to seven metres so boaters should be mindful of low bridge arches at high water and reduced depths at low water. There is also an eight knot speed limit for craft upstream of Wandsworth Bridge, while vessels in central London should restrict themselves to 12 knots. Boaters planning to visit the tidal river should log on to the Port of London Authority’s leisure website www.boatingonthethames.co.uk before making their journey. Waterside Services Poplar Marine
