Introduction from Mike Gates, CMM As Chairman of BMF Thames Valley, I am immensely proud to introduce the 2011/12 Cruising Guide to the River Thames and its connecting waterways. These historic waterways are the lifeblood of the leisure boating industry, but also a great place to relax, have fun and explore! BMF Thames Valley is a Regional Association of the British Marine Federation, the national trade association for the leisure boating industry. BMF Thames Valley represents around 200 businesses that all have a passion for our inland waterways. This Guide, developed in partnership with the Environment Agency, provides all the relevant information anyone would need whilst boating on The River Thames and its connecting waterways. A list of waterside services, cruising information and points of interest can be found on the detailed non-tidal Thames map. Information on BMF Member services on the Oxford, Kennet & Avon and Grand Union Canal as well as the River Way Navigation can be found on their own dedicated pages. Finally, a detailed Business Directory of all our members provides a comprehensive list for any boating need. I hope you use this guide throughout your time on the water and encourage you to make the most of the services on offer from BMF Thames Valley members. Happy Boating,

Who manages the River Thames? The Environment Agency manage the non-tidal River Thames from Lechlade in the Cotswolds to Teddington on the outskirts of London, including the 44 locks. There is much to explore as the River Thames runs through 3 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and some of England’s most picturesque towns. Do I need to register my boat? Yes, if you keep or use your boat on the River Thames, you need to be registered with the Environment Agency and display your registration plate. Annual registration runs from 1 January to 31 December for boats kept on the River Thames. If you’re visiting the River Thames from other waters, short period visitor registrations are available from most locks. For more information on registering your boat visit What is the speed limit? The maximum speed for powered boats on the non-tidal River Thames is 8 km/h (approx. 5 mph or a fast walking pace), but you should avoid creating a wash. Are there Lock Keepers to help me? Yes, there are trained, helpful and friendly staff on duty at locks to maintain the lock site and help boaters. When staff are not available to help blue ‘self service’ signs are displayed at the lock. When these signs are displayed you should follow the ‘lock operation’ instructions displayed at each lock site. How do I know what the river conditions are? The Environment Agency uses warning boards to advise boaters when the strong flows on the river make it difficult and dangerous to navigate. The following explains what they mean:

Users of all boats are advised not to navigate.

Users of all unpowered boats are advised not to navigate. Users of powered boats are advised to find a safe mooring.

Users of all unpowered boats are advised not to navigate, users of powered boats are advised to navigate with caution.

To view the current river conditions online or register for email updates go to For recorded information call the Environment Agency’s floodline on 0845 988 118 and select option 1 followed by the appropriate quick dial number from the list below: 011131 – river conditions and strong stream warnings 011132 – river works and lock closures 011133 – river events which may affect navigation 5

x97851_Cravens_p1_dw 05/04/2011 12:33 Page 7

Where can I moor? If you keep, or mainly use, your boat on the River Thames you should have a base mooring. There is a good choice of public short stay moorings for boaters to use while cruising the river. Unless signs state otherwise you are only allowed to moor for a maximum period of 24 hours and may have to pay a charge at some sites. For more information on the availability of long or short stay moorings, visit Where can I launch a small boat? There are a number of slipways and launching sites for small boats along the River Thames. Some are at boatyards and available for a charge during working hours only whilst others are free and accessible at all times. For more information about moorings and slipways go to How do I stay safe on the water? The Environment Agency want you to enjoy your time on the river. Here are their tops tips for staying safe when using your boat, especially in locks: • Keep fingers clear of ropes and bollards • Take care when stepping from boat to land • Don’t fend off with hands or feet • Don’t loose sight of your children • Wear sensible footwear with non-slip soles • Stop your boat with the engine before using your ropes For more information including frequently asked questions and further safety tips visit our website or Call us on 08708 506 506 (Mon-Fri 8-6) or email

Kennet & Avon Canal The Kennet & Avon Canal weaves through spectacular scenery between the Thames and the Bristol Avon, as natural rolling landscapes of the Cotswolds give way to the World Heritage Site of Bath. The route of the Kennet & Avon takes it through some of the nation's best loved landscapes, passing Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and habitats that are rich in flora and fauna. Today the canal is home to a wide range of leisure activities. From cycling and walking to wildlife watching, boat trips, museums and tearooms, there is much to explore. Oxford Canal The picturesque Oxford Canal meanders slowly from Oxford to Coventry through 77 miles of classic scenery, much of which has barely changed in centuries. It was briefly the principal waterway from London to the Midlands, but was superseded by the more direct Grand Union Canal. Consequently, the Oxford Canal has escaped largescale development and few towns have sprung up on its banks. The southern section is particularly charming and remains largely unaltered. Grand Union Canal The trunk route of Britain's canal network, the picturesque Grand Union links London through the Chilterns with Birmingham via the longest single canal in Britain. As the main line from London to the Midlands, the Grand Union Canal was once one of the busiest in the country. Today, its charm lies in its diversity: from the centre of London through the Chiltern Hills, rural Northamptonshire and Warwickshire, and into the suburbs of Birmingham, it offers a wide variety of landscapes, wildlife, architecture, historic craft and buildings. Tidal Thames The tidal River Thames, between Teddington and the North Sea, is Britain’s busiest inland waterway with 20,000 ship movements each year along its 95 mile length. It’s also a centre of excellence for rowing; a home to around 70 leisure craft clubs and marinas; an iconic destination for visiting boats; and host to 50 sporting events each year. The tidal Thames is a dynamic environment, with currents in some areas reaching four knots and a tidal rise and fall of up to seven metres so boaters should be mindful of low bridge arches at high water and reduced depths at low water. There is also an eight knot speed limit for craft upstream of Wandsworth Bridge, while vessels in central London should restrict themselves to 12 knots. Boaters planning to visit the tidal river should log on to the Port of London Authority’s leisure website before making their journey. Waterside Services Poplar Marine

River Wey In 1653, a century before the canal age really took off, enterprising land owner Sir Richard Weston opened the River Wey for navigation, linking Guildford with the Thames and London, by straightening out the windy bits of the river. The Wey is now used for pleasure boating, from holiday boats to rowing skiffs and trip boats, and passes through twenty miles of Surrey’s finest countryside from Godalming to the Thames at Weybridge. Never far from civilisation but thoroughly rural in character, the Wey meanders through Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and gives you picturesque locks, water meadows, woods and wildlife. Did you know....... ...the River Thames is joined by six connecting inland waterways? These include the Kennet & Avon and Grand Union canals, making it entirely possible to travel by boat to Bristol, Manchester and even York.

...the Thames used to freeze over and ‘Frost Fairs’ were held on the ice, with Londoners enjoying dancing and drinking. The last fair was held in 1814, and an elephant was led across the ice below Blackfriars Bridge.

...there are 45 locks on the River Thames? Each manmade structure allows boats to navigate the river while also providing vital flood manμagement systems for neighbouring communities.

...The Thames Path follows the river for 296km (184 miles) from its source, making it the longest riverside walk in Europe.

...a Gongoozler is someone who sits and watches the boats go by? You too can gongoozle at dozens of locks & bridges along the course of the River Thames from its source in the beautiful Cotswolds. ...Windsor Castle is the largest inhabited castle in the world? Its ramparts stand proud above the town’s bustling waterfront where cafes and trip boats are thronged by visitors from all over the world. ...the River Thames passes through two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty? Rising in the Cotswolds this majestic river winds its way to the Chilterns before passing through the heart of London and out to sea.

...Long ago, before Britain was separated from continental Europe, the Thames was a tributary of the Rhine. ...London is sinking at an estimated 12 inches (30cm) every 100 years. ...there are two 3-star Michelin restaurants on the River Thames (there are only three 3-star restaurants in the whole of UK and Ireland!). ...French Impressionist Claude Monet painted the Thames three times. One of the most famous of these paintings shows the river, Westminster Bridge and the Houses of Parliament on a spring day. ...Before engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette built London’s sewer system, much of the capital’s waste was disposed of in the river. In 1858, the stench from the river was so overpowering that Parliament had to be suspended and the government decided to find a way to rid the Thames of sewage.
