greatly to the success of Blush—without them, I cannot imagine orchestrating this publication. From the bottom of my heart, I thank these colleagues, friends, and family members for their overwhelming support. The highlight of 2011 was the beginning of a relationship with celebrity wedding and event designer, Preston Bailey. For years, I have followed Preston’s work and I’ve been in awe —I’ve seen him on celebrity wedding programs and in opulent books. He is the man behind many of Oprah’s luxurious events and some of the most magnificent occasions hosted all around the world. Although he is a celebrity, Preston is one of the most humble individuals I have ever had the privilege of meeting. After attending his gala hosted by Katherine Lomax of the Edmonton Bridal Expo, my respect for Preston quadrupled. His passion and the stories he shared were greatly

Unlike ordinary magazines, Blush is unique—we are the perfect size to fit in most girl’s purses. The most noteworthy element of Blush that makes us unique, though, is our focus on marriage—not just the wedding day. Planning a wedding is a momentous time in any relationship, but what should be considered is the fact that you are planning a marriage. A wedding is the beginning of the rest of your life, so we focus on all of the special moments.

The launch of Site 6 Events & Visual Solutions was kicked off by some of Edmonton and the surrounding area glitterati with décor supplied by a variety of well known Alberta companies. The Westbury Theatre sponsored by TransAlta Arts Barns and Fringe Theatre Adventures was the venue for the launch, and Site 6 transformed the space beautifully. We found this a terrific choice of staging for the theatrical event. One of the main highlights of the Summit was an imaginative video projection named “Floral Timelapse” by Mediaco, bringing both a new dimension to the event and added charm to designs by floral fame’s Janine Sebastian of La Piazza Dasee. The “Floral Timelapse” was a notable part of the evening since artistic projection is largely underused - adding echoing themes provides event cohesion and identity – a detail often overlooked in large scale events. Lighting and execution by Chris Baker of Production Lighting and striking table design by the always ingenious ID Bohemia added an additional avant-garde element to Site 6’s successful launch. Forgoing the conventional certainly paid off as guests admired the truly cosmopolitan assemblage. The showpiece fabric architecture, FLEX tables, ottomans, real grass décor, drapery and accessories were all

designed by Site 6, also done in a big city approach, with selected pieces supplied by mainstays River City Event Rentals and Special Event Rentals. Other contributors to Site 6’s evening décor were Etc Event Styling and Elegant Touches. With Harman B & DJ Kwake spinning, the event hit its peak as guests mingled with vendors to the hottest beats. No event is complete without food and fare: On hand was a selection of fusion delicacies by Restaurant 27 Catering - what caught us off guard? Their tapas a la haute cuisine: Created with down-home ingredients, look no further than Restaurant 27 Catering for your own event menu. Blush’s biggest surprise star of the evening? Definitely FLIPBOOKS by Timewise Event Management! In under a minute Blush’s team was captured on film and transformed into THE wedding favor for this year’s trendy couples. Exceptional images by Elizabeth van der Bij of ENV Photography captured the event, using technique suited to an edgier and unconventional feel. Our absolute favourite display of the entire shindig? Site 6 at Midnight, produced and designed by Site 6. Who better to capture the vibe of the evening than the hosts themselves? Cheers, Site 6, we’ll have our next Pink and Green Martini’s with you!

It is a challenge to find adequate words to portray the magnitude of Preston Bailey’s accomplishments. His portfolio boasts best-selling books, work for highprofile clients, and frequent television appearances. While many wedding and event designers credit the huge influence Preston has had on the industry with its success, he consistently focuses on the significance of team development.

He has inspired individuals in this industry around the globe, but of his own success he is characteristically modest. When asked at what moment he thought to himself, “I’ve made it,” Preston’s response is that he will hopefully utter those words the day before he dies: “I’m hoping that I’m just getting started and that’s the beauty of this business, it gives you the opportunity to keep growing. It’s not a matter of I’ve made it, it’s a matter that I’m still making it. For me, it’s not about being successful, but...about growing.” Preston’s road to success is made up of marvelous and not so wonderful moments. As Preston states on his website, it is through God’s blessing that he overcame many obstacles to build an incredible career transforming “raw spaces into sumptuous, theatrical environments.” So how did Preston Bailey, the corporation, emerge? As Preston tells it, “I never had a shop, I’ve never worked for anyone, I do freelance. I started working from my apartment, which you have to understand in New York City, working from an apartment is the most difficult thing in the world. It was a challenge. My apartment looked like a florist’s shop every time you walked in, which is kind of wonderful. It was a one bedroom apartment and the living room was full of flowers. I did business like that for the first ten years

&

until things started to get going and now we have three floors of a building in New York City.” Even after being in the business for over thirty years, Preston maintains his enthusiasm: “every client is different, so that alone lends for a lot of newness and excitement. Being here in Edmonton for instance, this is exciting for me, the possibility of coming here, creating new work, creating new books...it’s a good life.” He explains that his first client, a lady in New York City, for whom he designed flowers weekly, is as memorable for him as his most recent client; but things changed drastically when he met a woman whom he now calls a dear friend – Joan Rivers. He has dedicated his latest book Flowers to her. “This woman has changed my business, my life,” says Preston. Joan found Preston when she was looking for the perfect floral designer for her daughter’s wedding: “they were interviewing all of the florists of New York City and she came in and what we showed her, she liked, and we clicked.” Melissa Rivers’ winter wonderland wedding in 1998, a wedding that is still admired, set Preston on the road to success. Oprah followed and . . . .

Edmonton Bridal Expo is recognized as “Autumn’s biggest and most elegant bridal show.” According to Katherine Lomax, owner of the Expo, the annual occasion “attracts qualified, sophisticated brides who are looking for vendors that are the best at what they do, offer a superb product and service, and do so with integrity and honesty.” Brides-to-be, who are at the early or final stage of their planning, visit the Expo for the ultimate bridal experience. Breanne spent the day at Edmonton Bridal Expo with her mother and bridesmaids: “It was nice to get some ideas for [my] wedding and now that I have [a list of vendors], I can start my planning!” Even though Stacia had already planned the majority of her wedding with her wedding planner, she also visited the Expo with her mother and bridesmaids. She says that she “was eager to partake in the entire bridal experience, including the attendance of a wedding show.” She equates her experience with the delight of a trip to Disneyland: “Bridal Expo is to brides what Disneyland is to children.” The Expo is definitely the place for brides to find inspiration. This year, Expo hosted celebrity guest Preston Bailey, who launched his new book Flowers — this event was definitely a highlight for brides-to-be and industry members alike. Now in her fifth year at the helm, Katherine says, “what I really enjoy and am passionate about is the power of a group of strong exhibitors. I am selective about who is in the show and I encourage exhibitors and my staff to promote each other all year round. Edmonton Bridal Expo is a team effort.” Her ideology is evident in the quality of the exhibitors

and their presentations. Blush was particularly impressed by the vendors’ interactive and welldesigned booths which embraced different styles — some modern, some vintage, but all current. Several distinctive features stood out, such as the incorporation of a business’s brand colours (Awespiring Weddings and Design), the contrast between vintage and modern (Special Event Rentals), and the one-of-a-kind display of products (Notables Stationers). But the most favourite event is always the fashion show, with live music, beautiful wedding gowns, and handsome men in tuxedos! The perfect accompaniments to the bridal looks were floral designs by Graham & Lane Florists and La Piazza Dasee. Reminiscent of a Victoria’s Secret event, this year’s show featured live music with DJs Harman B and Kwake of Urban Metropolis and a behind-the-scenes video by A Love Story which was projected onto a screen behind the runway. Presented twice during the Expo, the fashion show was both upbeat and thrilling. We wish all the brides who attended Edmonton Bridal Expo success with their planning and a perfect wedding day.

An interview with Preston Bailey (continued)

Although the budgets Preston works with today are substantial, his first was just one hundred dollars. When asked where best to allocate the money with such a budget, Preston replied: “it’s really a matter of what you do with that hundred dollars — there is no best place. You find out what is most important to them [the client] and you might want to spend most of the resources there. You have to think of all of it together, that’s what

makes a successful party. I want to walk out of that room and I want to make sure that everything looks the best that I could do with the budget that I had.” To be able to sit down with Preston and talk to him in Edmonton was an honour. I discovered what the man behind the successful global corporation was really like — a modest and inspiring individual. So, have I found the words to portray the magnitude of Preston Bailey’s accomplishments? Probably not adequately; but what I did learn from him is that regardless of success, one should remain humble, respectful, and passionate about life and what you do each day.

“ why worry about something you can fix ” is one of the driving philosophies behind the husband and wife team of Dr. Jay and Jillian Haubrich, owners of Divine Interventions Kaya Kama Hammam & Day Spa in Sherwood Park. The ordinary exterior of the spa doesn’t prepare you for the world of lushly appointed elegance inside. The foyer is done in tasteful décor with echoes of the best Eurasian spas there are. It isn’t just the décor that transports you, the staff is all well coiffed, and wear genuine smiles as they greet you. algea body wrap

massage

ipl photo facial

My day begins with an Algae Body wrap executed by Alicia. Once changed, I’m led to the heated marble bench to lie face down and she begins the process of covering me in the algae which is made up of several minerals and vitamins including Pro Vitamin A, Vitamin B, C, and E; this wrap is also rich with naturally occurring algae protein. I expect to feel a rough, grainy mudlike substance with a bit of sting but the application is quite relaxing. Once I am covered front and back, the process of wrapping me starts.

On to the massage where therapist Rukhsana asks some great questions about what areas I need massaged most. The other stand out item here? We set up a signal so that if the massage was too firm, I could have her tone it down without interrupting the massage experience completely. Getting started face down, Rukhsana starts by gently rubbing unscented oil on my back and shoulders getting progressively firmer as the oil begins to absorb. I feel myself being transported even as I am experiencing the typical discomfort that comes with a therapeutic massage. I can actually feel my knots loosening with each pass over them. Turning me over, she works on my arms from top to bottom, each time taking a bit of extra time on my wrists and fingers. Moving up to my neck, she makes sure to do my lymph nodes, explaining in her melodic voice that this would help detoxify me in the sinus area. This service should be done at least a week and a half before your event unless you go for a pure relaxation massage with no firm work on your knots. After the massage, I am escorted into a beautifully decorated salon. I’m told to relax as authentic chai tea, still water and cookies are served. Robbin, the esthetician, who performs my final service along with Dr. Haubrich, explains to me that after both a scrub and a massage, the body needs adjustment time as well as something to nibble on to prevent lightheadedness.

My final service of the day (seeing the end near with much regret) is a Photo Facial. An IPL Photo Facial can help treat several different skin conditions: brown spots (pigmentation), broken capillaries, spider veins, and facial redness. The facial delivers a bright blast of light at high energy levels using a handheld device. This facial is the best choice for skin rejuvenation because it encourages the production of collagen, a natural protein that makes your skin supple and smooth. A caveat on this treatment, it is done in 3 stages with each stage being 4 weeks apart so it should be part of the beauty planning for your wedding early on. Dr. Haubrich starts by taking a photo of my skin under a UV light and then explains how the treatment works. I felt no discomfort whatsoever with this treatment but the results were nothing short of astounding. Within 5 days of my initial treatment, my skin was so refreshed that I got several inquiries about what I had done. My second treatment 4 weeks later shows even more. Brides, if you want fresh and dewy skin for your big day, ask for this treatment. After spending a day evaluating staff, services, décor and ambience, Divine Interventions is Blush’s pick for the Spa to be visited for your bridal services.

I’m led to the heated marble bench to lie face down and she begins the process of covering me in the algae which is made up of several minerals and vitamins... It is here that I begin to slightly fret since I don’t like feeling confined. As though she senses this, Alicia wraps me just tight enough to make sure the process of detoxification and fat lypolisis start but not so tight that I am uncomfortable. Tea bags are provided for my eyes and I am left alone to relax. What feels like a good nap is interrupted when Alicia comes in, leads me over to the other marble bench and washes me down making sure every speck of Algae is gone. This service is best done a couple of days before your event as it does decrease you about an inch or so.

bronzed and beautiful , glowing and gorgeous ,

you love how your skin looks with a tan. It’s that little kiss of colour that makes you look relaxed, rested, and smooth. But with our changing climate, that year-round tan is a bit of a pipe dream. We suggest you reach for a bottle of self-tanner and be your own sun-goddess! To help you get the most out of your self-tanner we’ve compiled a few simple tips that guarantee a flawless faux-tan.

step 1: exfoliate & hydrate

The key to a streak-free self-tan is all in the preparation. Exfoliating prior to the application of any selftanning product will ensure that any accumulated dead skin won’t affect the way your self-tanner absorbs. Hydration; Applying a body moisturizer after you exfoliate allows your skin to take in the big drink of water it needs to look smooth and supple. Exfoliate and hydrate at least 8-10 hours BEFORE you self-tan. Step 2: Get Glowing

Application; If you’re doing your legs, it’s best to begin working from

the ankles in an upward direction. Take some of the product and begin applying it with soft, circular sweeping movements from your ankle toward your thigh. Areas you’ll want to avoid for now are the feet, ankles, and knee-caps. Follow the same directions for your arms, working from wrist to shoulder and avoiding the hands and elbows. Step 3: Blend Baby

To blend all the areas you’ve left out so far, our favourite tip is to mix equal parts body lotion and selftanner and to go back and gently sweep a little of the mixture over these very absorbent zones (tops of

the feet, ankles, knee caps, tops of the hands and elbows). Step 4: Wash-Up and WAIT

Gently (but thoroughly) wash the palms of your hands and in between your fingers. What’s the most important part in ensuring a streak free tan? Patience! Wait at least 15 – 30 minutes for the self-tanner to fully absorb and dry before you dress or get into bed. And there you have it! A perfect, streak-free tan, done at home and without requiring any specialist equipment!

he had no choice but to step up the improv: Using salsa and merengue beats he had on hand, he created a new routine in the early 90s that 20 years later has taken gyms and dance studios across the world over by storm. According to The Telegraph, over 20,000 instructors were teaching Zumba in 35 countries as of 2009. We signed up for a class with Edmonton’s Yuko Tanaka, a certified instructor, who noted that her own passion for Zumba as a student was so strong that, “I thought of getting certified which has been a great journey for me, professionally and personally”. In a mixed level class, Yuko quickly pumped up the jam, encouraging us to follow her and feel the beat. Newbies soon blended with pros, under Yuko’s careful direction, cueing both by calling out her next moves and visually, by gesturing left or right with the music. According to Yuko, Zumba is “a mixture of fitness movements fused with basic steps from salsa, merengue, reggaeton, cumbia, bachata, flamenco, tango, samba, belly dance, bangra, swing, quebradita, African, and many other international dancing rhythms.” We sat down with Yuko to learn a bit more about the fitness craze after our first fist pumping, heart thumping Zumba class!

What are some Zumba benefits? “Everything! Happiness! You burn calories and work out every single muscle group without noticing and you’ll have so much fun that you don’t even feel the work out until the next day! The music is contagious! You enjoy it so much — most of the songs in a Zumba class are Latinbased rhythms bringing a lot of sensuality — which boosts femininity and confidence! It makes you feel sexy and as a woman, who doesn’t want to be and feel sexy? It also keeps you alert and keeps your brain active, memorizing steps and paying attention for the next cue that the instructor gives.”

What do Zumba beginners find most challenging? “Some people are too shy to show up for class, others feel self-conscious and they don’t want to participate, others say that they have two left feet. Once they are there and they see how much everybody enjoys it, you’ll just go with the flow of the music and start having a great time!”

How many times per week should one do Zumba for optimal results? “Everything that you include in your life you want to do it gradually, it’s the same with Zumba. Begin with one class, and then your body will tell you how much it can handle. Three classes a week, then five classes a week when you’re ready. I totally recommend doing Zumba five times a week! It’s great cardio and has amazing results, although you also need to give your body recovery time.”

What are some of the physical plusses? “Zumba has a lot of hip movement which automatically engages your core. You can get a beautiful welldefined hourglass shaped waist because of the oblique work! You also get well defined and firm legs and buttocks from all the footwork that is applied during class. You’ll notice a beautiful back and arms with the routines that are designed to target those muscles — like the ones that incorporate tango, belly dance, and flamenco songs.”

In doing so, he takes great pains to explain why the wheat we use today is encouraging obesity (hence the name Wheat Belly), a rise in Celiac disease and several other illnesses. There are some solid facts in this book that can’t be ignored when it comes to weight loss so if you are looking to shed some weight before the big event, this is the book for you.

never a mistress , no longer a maid Maureen Driscoll Reading Historical Romance can, at times, be a thankless endeavor with heroines who are highly male dependent and usually spineless and heroes who are testosterone fuelled caricatures of reality. That is absolutely not the case here. In one of the best historical romances released in the past 2 years, author Maureen Driscoll introduces us to a heroine who is both vulnerable and strong. She is a woman who wishes to be a doctor at a time when women were to be strictly seen and not heard. The hero? A man who is just as hemmed in by society’s expectations of him (marriage trap included). This is the book to read when you want to experience the blush of love being discovered.

As friends, throughout their post-secondary education, they frequented Ricky’s All Day Grill. Over their weekly breakfast encounters, they engaged in long conversations; they could speak to each other endlessly. After years of friendship, as often happens, they drifted apart; but ten years later they were reunited. Nidaa and Rammy knew they were ready to enter into the next phase of their relationship — dating; they were ready to begin their “happily ever after.” When asked if she anticipated their engagement, Nidaa admitted that she “knew we were going to be together, but I didn’t expect it!” When Nidaa arrived at Rammy’s house, thinking that they were going to spend the evening with friends, she was pleasantly surprised by a cue card adhered to the front door which read “I fell in love the first time I met you.” Inside the house, Nidaa found a sequence of cue cards in a line on the floor, surrounded by candles and rose petals. The cards disclosed Rammy’s proposal. She followed them into the dining room and there, on the table, next to the dinner that her future husband had made, sat the final card: “would only be complete if you were my wife. Will you marry me?” Of course, she said “yes!” “On a whim, I just started writing and it all seemed to make sense,” says Rammy when asked why he wrote his proposal in this way. After ten years of friendship, then being apart and reuniting, it seemed inevitable that their love would result in a whirlwind romance. Following a short engagement, in the spring of 2011, Nidaa and

Rammy exchanged their nuptial vows in a traditional private Muslim ceremony. Nidaa and Rammy celebrated their marriage at a reception with 650 guests. Prior to the celebration, the couple met at the bride’s home. In traditional Lebanese weddings, the groom, who is accompanied by an entourage of people, arrives at the bride’s home to greet his future wife. Rammy waited at the foot of a staircase for his bride’s appearance. It was on those stairs that Nidaa made her grand entrance. When they were each asked about their favourite moment of the wedding celebration, both Nidaa and Rammy answered that it was that moment. They were finally getting married! The couple celebrated in a fashionably chic style — the bride adorned in a Justin Alexander gown and the groom looking dapper in a custom-made suit by Harry Rosen. The reception space was washed in purple lighting which created a modern sophisticated atmosphere. Nidaa recollected that, although they hosted a significant number of guests, the room still felt intimate because of the lighting and the immense joy of those celebrating with them. After the wedding, Nidaa advised that all brides and grooms should “enjoy every moment [of their wedding] because it passes by so quickly.” The newlyweds themselves enjoyed a perfect, romantic honeymoon in Bora Bora, where they spent their days sharing sweet words, just as they had when they first met a decade before. Friendship is truly the greatest foundation for love.

following which they occasionally ran into one another. It was as if the universe was trying to bring them together. But it took six years before their relationship was quickly rekindled through the largest social medium of this age — yes, Facebook — and the rest, as they say, is history. The duo shares an identical tattoo which reads “regret nothing,” written in Rebecca’s mother’s penmanship. They do not regret their time apart, because it gave them many stories to share. During their separation, they both grew as individuals which has only strengthened the relationship they have today. As a couple that often travelled together, it seems fitting that Tuan proposed while they were en route to their next adventure — a visit to the islands of Hawaii. Tuan is a man who works long hours, so the couple had become accustomed to leaving each other sweet sentiments written on sticky notes adhered to the mirror on their bathroom wall. On this particular day, when Rebecca walked into the bathroom, she found hundreds of sticky notes covering the bathroom mirror forming the shape of a heart, and in the center of the heart was the note on which was written those four special words: “will you marry me?” They then explored the tropical paradise of Hawaii as an engaged couple. Rebecca says that she felt like the luckiest bride-tobe, to have her future husband at her side throughout every moment of the wedding-planning process. Together, they hand-painted rocks with their guests’ names for the place settings and designed personalized

Starbucks cards for their guests to keep as mementos of their wedding. In these crafting and organizing moments, they bonded. Above all else, Rebecca and Tuan value the love and affection that they share with each other and with their families, which is exemplified by their intimate guest list for the celebration of their marriage. As they planned their nuptials, the couple chose to deviate from what might be considered standard expectations of a wedding reception. In their unique selection of venue — one of Edmonton’s finest restaurants — they hosted a romantic and elegant affair. What made their wedding very special was being able to share each of the small, yet significant moments, with their loved ones. All their guests enjoyed themselves immensely, as did the bride and groom. Just as they had done in celebration of their engagement, Rebecca and Tuan selected yet another magnificent destination for their honeymoon. They shared two amorous weeks traversing through Italy. As the poet Anna Akhmatova once said, “Italy is a dream that keeps returning for the rest of your life.” May Rebecca and Tuan’s memories of their romantic Italian honeymoon last forever.

They shared a brief conversation but, after Arafat had left the restaurant, months passed before their next exchange. Arafat again visited the eatery and asked about Lana—he knew he had to talk to her. It was during this second conversation that Lana began to find her way into Arafat’s heart. He asked her to go for coffee, which turned into sushi, which evolved into a five-year courtship which ended in their exchange of nuptial vows. It was after a year of their blissful romance, on the celebration of Arafat’s birthday, that Lana, to make the event extra special, designed a unique scavenger hunt for him. The pursuit was designed to go through the span of the whole day, beginning in the downtown core where Lana provided Arafat with his first clue. As he found each clue, he received a gift along with the hunt’s next clue. The most significant of these clues, however, was the first — a visit to the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald where they had shared their second date. Inside the package that awaited him there, Arafat found a grey silk handkerchief that Lana had ordered for him from Harrods. That moment foreshadowed what was to come on their wedding day. It seemed suitable, therefore, for Lana and Arafat to celebrate their wedding, the beginning of their future as a married couple, at a venue which had played a role in some of the most significant moments of their shared

history. Naturally, the path to their wedding began with a romantic proposal. Arafat surprised Lana with a fairy-tale getaway to the Banff area where they spent a weekend at a boutique hotel in Canmore and went on a very special hike. As they walked through the mountains of Johnston Canyon, Arafat found the most perfectly secluded spot where he pulled the diamond ring from his pocket and eloquently professed his love for Lana, ending with “I want to spend the rest of my life with you, will you marry me?” On their wedding day, the soon-to-be newlyweds coincidentally surprised each other with the gift of a handkerchief. Lana says that when she had planned the scavenger hunt five years earlier, “I recognized how much I adored this man and wanted to spend the rest of my life with him.” That is how the grey silk handkerchief became so significant for them as a couple. Lana gave her future husband the gift of a newly embroidered handkerchief, while Arafat gave his future wife something old—the handkerchief from Harrods that she had given him, which he had had embroidered with her favourite quote. This exchange was Lana’s favourite moment of their wedding day. Arafat’s, he remembers, was “being up in front of everybody and professing my love for her”; despite being in front of their family and friends, it felt, because of his passion for her, as if it were just the two of them. May the fire of their passion burn forever.

Blush ADVICE

∙ Love

can

give

you

a

ton

of

d r . ba r to n g o l d sm i t h

energy.

It can help make the difference between wellness and continued illness, see you through an uncomfortable situation, or inspire you to get real creative. Unfortunately, it will not pay your bills or get you clean and sober. And it’s a mistake to believe that you can change someone else if only you love him or her enough. Love does heal, but only up to a point. You can’t solve someone else’s problems, and if you have an issue or dilemma, you can’t expect love or your lover to fix it. You have to step up and make the move to take care of yourself in whatever way is necessary. But love helps. So does knowledge, imagination, and hard work. Love is about the two of you sticking together through the rough patches and, once they are over, enjoying the fact that you are a great team. Now that’s bonding. I really think it takes two people to make one life. Getting through tough times is much easier if you do it as a couple. Many successful people will tell you that they could not have gotten to where they are without the one they love by their side. Emotional support from a loved one can make a big difference in how we deal with the roller-coaster of life. We all have issues, and having that hand to hold can give us the strength we need to deal with them.

If your relationship is on the rocks, or if love has eluded you, there is no time like the present to turn things around and make your heart full. Start by acting as if you feel the love, or mentally recall a time when you did. By conjuring up those feelings, you are also projecting them on to your partner or a potential one. Giving your heart to someone only to have it handed back to you in pieces is about as painful as life gets. When your love is rebuffed or dishonored by a partner’s bad behavior, please remember that it is not your fault. Avoid saying to yourself, “If I only could have loved him or her more, this wouldn’t have happened.” In truth, you don’t have any control over how another person acts, and there’s no point in beating yourself up. If you are not happy with your current romantic circumstances, then it’s time to do something about it. It’s much easier to fix a broken relationship than to find a new one, so start looking at ways to make things better. Begin with an honest conversation about how you feel and see if the two of you can resolve to be nicer to each other. These actions will help you feel the love again. If you are still looking, please give the Internet a try — it worked for us. And remember what John Lennon said, “The love you take is equal to the love you make.”

Regardless of the direction you take with your wedding, if you want beautiful and memorable images with a unique, vintage or old-world feel, we have provided a photographer’s viewpoint of our top five favourite venues.

The Art Gallery of Alberta

Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel

ed m o n to n

Ban ff

The Art Gallery of Alberta is one of our favourite wedding locations in Edmonton! The architecture is modern, open, and spacious. The AGA is beyond elegant and your guests will definitely be in awe. Packages are available for parties of 10 to 500 and Zinc Catering (an in-house service) is very unique in its menu and presentation, including incorporating the couple’s colour and theme right into the menu. The staff is helpful and the management is very thorough in planning and coordination of events. Pricing is comparable to other venues and even if you are not holding an event at AGA, you may still have beautiful images as the photography fees are around $200/hour.

The impression this hotel gave us upon first approach, was in a word — dramatic. We will not soon forget the towering castle walls nestled in the heart of the mountains! Numerous weddings are held here because of the history and that ultimate WOW factor. It has a “King Arthur” feel, flattered by thrones, fireplaces, rich color and knight’s armour standing at attention. Piano-shaped chocolates, gourmet food, robes and the couture toiletries are just some of the impressive details. This venue will be pricey, but well worth it if you wish for a true Castle Wedding. Your guests will love the awardwinning spa, 15 restaurants and shopping right in the hotel. I can tell you candidly from a photographer’s viewpoint, there is no such thing as a bad photo at this location!

The Alberta Legislative Grounds

This wedding venue is one of the most elegant in Edmonton. It has wonderful potential for unique and historic images. Whether you choose a Ballroom or the beautiful glass Gazebo overlooking the River Valley, each is gorgeous! The gourmet food is unsurpassed and attention to detail and thoughtful customer service are prevalent here. Bridal Portraits are welcome in the magnificent gardens, staircase, Mezzanine floor and by the cozy fireplace in the Lounge. Soft lighting and beauty is everywhere — a wonderful local choice for weddings!

This location does require some travel, but we had to put this in our top five. We love this venue for its wholesome, 1900’s historic wedding photographs. This is a wonderful choice if you are looking for a unique old-world feel on a budget. Indoor and outdoor facilities accommodate weddings from 20 to 500 people. The staff will work with you to make sure your celebration is perfect in every way and the options are endless! For your ceremony, there are many little churches or an open gazebo amongst the boardwalk town. Catering services are available and your guests will have the freedom to explore the Village that includes a wheat pool, steam train, Victorian homes, red barns, and a tea house. This is an all-in-one package that your guests will long remember and most likely come back to visit again. We recommend staying at the close by Gold Eagle Lodge — bright, new, and wonderfully accommodating!

One of the most beautiful and popular locations for public use is the Legislature. Photographs are allowed outside on the steps of the Legislature Building and on the grounds year round. Fountains, gardens, mature trees and some of the most beautiful architecture in the city are here. This is a wedding favourite to photograph throughout the entire year, holding winter scenery with spectacular holiday lighting, splendid garden greenery the entire summer or rich autumnal colors. We have captured Romanesque images from the front of the Legislature, peach sunsets on the dome from the west, flame-throwers performing onstage before sunset to the south and garden paths to the east. Photography sessions are free to the public.
