when my team and i were brainstorming editorial themes for 2013, we landed on a black and white concept — I couldn’t be happier with the creative direction this issue. I think every couple should take a few B & W portraits on their wedding day, they never become dated and they lend

an elegance that colour sometimes lacks. This issue, we showcase a series of magnificent gowns captured in the timeless medium of black and white. I hope you’ll appreciate them as much as I do. Moving on to even more fun stuff: New York City! Yes, you’ll be hearing a lot about this magnetic metropolis going forward. It houses the biggest trendsetters in the world, and Blush was at the frontlines when these iconic designers revealed their latest collections. I’m sure you all can imagine the tremendous amount of creativity and work that goes into each show and every gown. This past fall, we were fortunate to attend plenty of fashion shows, catch up with the latest trends on page 20. NYC is magical — when I was exiting the Marchesa show, I was heading toward the elevator, immersed in sending messages and pictures on my phone to my creative team. An interesting accent caught my attention and I turn only to find Mr. Colin Cowie sharing my elevator ride. Of course I introduced myself and told him how much I would love to show him off to all my readers (flip to page 12 as soon as you finish reading this letter).

An interesting accent caught my attention and I turn only to find Mr. Colin Cowie sharing my elevator ride. See his feature on page 12.

On a more personal note, during my 2012 visit to New York City to shoot our cover with Preston Bailey, I crossed paths with so many people, one of whom stood out. Today that man is my fiancé. When I first started up this magazine, I had no idea where this venture would take me. Four years later, Blush has led me to my future husband. So now, I am like you; reading this magazine, planning a wedding, so in love, and looking forward to sharing the rest of my life with my best friend. Stay tuned for the Fall/Winter 2013 issue, as I am so excited to share our love story and wedding with you all. Until next issue, happy wedding planning!

For the last two years, Blush has been a proud exhibitor at Edmonton Bridal Expo. This year we proudly showcased our Fall Winter 2012 issue in a booth of our own. Following suit with the colours of the issue and the contemporary nature of Blush, High Culture designed a simple and chic booth where brides were provided with a complimentary copy of the magazine. With stylish furniture from Special Event Rentals, the booth had the atmosphere of a modern living room. Of course, adhering with the inspiration of the cover, the space was accented by beautiful arrangements by FaBLOOMosity. A comment that is made every year at Edmonton Bridal Expo is that the show attracts what has become known as the “Bridal Expo Bride,” a very specific type of bride; sophisticated. Ashley McNeill of Delica Bridal adds that “the brides [at the show] are a little more highend, they’re fun, and they’re young.” Offering an event for the discerning bride, Edmonton Bridal Expo exhibits some of the city’s finest wedding vendors — many of which are repeat exhibitors. Brides-to-be, who are at the early or final stage of their planning, visit the Expo for the ultimate bridal experience. Although brides are provided with an idea of what to expect from the show, the event is overwhelming and goes beyond anyone’s expectations; over $20,000 in prizes, a plethora of inspirations, and a New York inspired fashion show. One thing that stands out the most about Edmonton Bridal Expo is that it is current and progressive, has a loyal following

of exhibitors, and has a very particular demographic of brides. For over ten years, Edmonton Bridal Expo has sought to provide a welcoming atmosphere where brides are invited to interact with exhibitors, an aspect that firsttime exhibitor Cory Christopher of Dasee Floral Boutique noticed; “I think it’s amazing when you have an opportunity to bring a bunch of local vendors together and provide a bride with inspiration. It’s great for [brides] to look on the internet and flip through magazines, but I think when they get to interact with people, and see what their specialty is, and what their passion is, I think it’s truly exciting for unleashing the possibilities of what their day can have.” Priya Khan, another first-time

‘the show attracts what has become known as the “Bridal Expo Bride,” a very specific type of bride; sophisticated.’ exhibitor, of Dress My Day, and Sofia Morgadinho of Awespiring Weddings & Design also enjoy the interactive atmosphere that Edmonton Bridal Expo generates. Edmonton Bridal Expo veteran, Johwanna Alleyne of To Be In Pictures saves her show efforts exclusively for “Autumn’s biggest and most elegant bridal show.” Along with many of the exhibitors who revisit the show each year, Joe Ammar of River City Events “love[s] the atmosphere [that the show] creates.”

D e s i g n & d É co r As to be expected, some of Edmonton’s finest décor rental firms who are at the forefront of innovative design concepts combined tradition with a modern flair in their booth design.

Many businesses showcased beautiful products, but they also designed interactive, show-stopping booths along with contests or take-homes that were equally interactive. Delica Bridal: Every bride was invited to have her photo taken in the booth, along with her entourage, a photo that would later become her entry to win a designer wedding gown worth $2,000.

River City Events: These designers brought interactive to the next step and had a live model showcased as a “living” centerpiece; how creative?

“I met Hugh Hefner and was commissioned to design and produce his wedding… little did I realize how famous the world’s most famous bachelor was! From then I was labeled Mr. Wedding,” says Cowie. Mr Wedding indeed, with clients that range from a who’s who in royalty and aristocracy, celebrity and society, Colin professes that his South African roots brought hospitality to the forefront in Los Angeles entertainment. From then on, it was up and away for the entrpeneur. He advises that couples should “pick three things and do them well rather than 5 things on the skinny. Offer a signature cocktail instead of the proverbial red wine, white wine and water, save them for the meal service. And rather than hiring a band, book a DJ! Find one who understands how to work the energy in the room so when it’s time to party everyone is on the dance floor.” Sage advice from the man who has conceptually developed some of the biggest nuptial events in the world What else can a couple do when entertaining to maximize impact? “If you want to show people your real sense of style, open your house to them. When decorating, keep a thread of style by identifying your look and colour. Create one master theme that starts with the wreath on the front door, to

with Colin Cowie ∙ rebecca fisher-swarbrooke ∙ How did you find your transition between South Africa and the United States? When I arrived in LA, I met people who had walk-in refrigerators, live-in help, and they were eating in restaurants 7 days a week. By embracing my African roots, I inspired people to bring guests into their homes and entertain them… hence the start of my first business, a catering company. Because of my European sensibility I brought a very new and fresh perspective on food to the L.A. scene in the 80’s and became the go to party planner with clients like Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, Tom Cruise, Sylvester Stallone, etc.

Who was your first client? The first wedding I did was in South Africa at Heldterfontein. It was a gorgeous Sir Herbert Baker Home set on 250 acres with rolling lawns and beautiful scenery just outside of Johannesburg. All was going well until a herd of Brahmin decided to make their way across the pasture toward the wedding site in search of the fragrant flowers I was using to decorate the arbor. Within minutes it was an all you can eat buffet with cattle feasting on the flowers decorating the ceremony area. Seeing what was happening my staff and I ran to every table to get the centerpieces to a safe place. The herder corralled the cattle after their fragrant feasting and fortunately we were able to reset the tables and carry on with the luncheon. Definitely something I’ll never forget, thankfully the bride and groom found it amusing.

Is there such a thing as a typical day in the life of Colin Cowie? Last year, I spent over 250 days traveling. There was this one week when I was in seven different cities in five different countries meeting the different Colin Cowie Lifestyle teams and working around the clock. I wake up and head right to the gym by 8 am. Breakfast is eggs, wheat toast, a smoothie, a hand full of vitamins, and no tea or coffee (only water when the sun is up), and then the day begins. Tequila is my cocktail of choice on the weekends.

I used to wake up at 6 am and go to the flower market, arrange the flowers, do the marketing, then head home to cook the meal. I’d set their table, cork the wines, pour drinks, serve the meal, and do the clean-up. And I put 120 percent into everything I do. It’s kept me at the top of my field. My favorite days are always the day of the party or opening of a project. I never set out doing what I’m doing now. One step led to another and the dream has come to life.” “The first wedding I did was in South Africa at Heldterfontein. is love

a cho i c e ? ∙ dr. bar ton goldsmith ∙

whereas i do believe that all behavior is a choice, some emotions—like love—are not. We may fall, like it or not, for some of the dumbest reasons, but love, as the poets say, can be blind.

Scientists believe love is a DNA thing, where body chemistries connect through pheromones and such. A doctor once told me that love is all biochemistry, and we have no choice in it. Sometimes the pull is so strong, we stay in relationships that are unhealthy, and even though we know it, we can’t seem to make ourselves leave. This is why we may choose to stick it out with a partner who is not all that nice to us. He or she could lie, cheat, or steal from us, and somehow or another, we will once again open our hearts, perhaps only to get hurt again. It seems like we are living that old saying, “The devil you know is better than the one you don’t.” We may feel that we haven’t got a choice, but we always do. There are times when you can’t really trust your emotions. Reality has to take its rightful place when you are considering whether to continue a potentially abusive relationship. You should think twice, recall your past with this person, and get

some counseling if you think that any part of your relationship is unhealthy. Love can direct us to make decisions that we know are not right. At certain stages in our lives, if our parents or friends tell us that he or she isn’t the right person for us, we simply ignore the unwanted advice and let romantic love take over. Not an uncommon or horrible decision, but when the relationship sours and you hear the voices of all the naysayers in your head, it’s hard to avoid beating yourself up.

Love can direct us to make decisions that we know are not right. As adults, we need to give ourselves the chance to get to really know a person before making a commitment. Once we have made that commitment, we need to honor it, but if the relationship becomes a portal for negative outbursts,

addiction, or abuse, it’s time to reevaluate and consider getting help or moving on. And yes, many times, things can be fixed or at least improved upon. Your partner may be venting some old inner pain or may be feeling the pressure of life to the extent where he or she inappropriately takes it out on you. Once past hurts are brought up and dealt with, many couples can rediscover their love and once again move forward. I believe in love, but I also know that life can sometimes get in the way and we don’t always make the right choices. If this has happened to you, please don’t let it go unchecked. Look deeply into yourself, your relationship, and your loved one’s eyes and truly see where the two of you are as a couple. Together you can make choices that will make both of your lives better.

Named by Cosmopolitan Magazine as one of America’s top relationship experts, award-winning psychotherapist, syndicated columnist, and radio host Barton Goldsmith, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized counsellor, author, and speaker.

CALLING ALL BRIDESMAIDS A How-To Guide for Being the Attendant Par Excellence ∙ najla elwenni ∙ Your phone starts ringing off the hook, you answer only to be confronted with your best friend or relative on the line shrieking that she’s engaged. You’re summoned to be her maid of honour or bridesmaid. That’s where it usually begins, so we’re here to help you excel at one of the most difficult requests your bestie will ever make: running the show.

It’s Her Wedding Not Yours Being a bridesmaid means you are accepting a huge amount of responsibility. Your girlfriend is going to remember this day for the rest of her life. Don’t complain about your hair, make up, the dress you’re required to wear, or who you are paired up with. She doesn’t need to add your crazy antics to the list. The mission at hand? To weather the storm and remain her Number One Friend the day after the wedding.

Get Along With Your Fellow Bridesmaids Chances are you aren’t going to love her three to five other attendants- you don’t have to like them, but you do need to get along. Together you are the bride’s team, meaning that you are all responsible for setting the tone of the experience. Rely on one another and delegate the tasks equally.

Shower Vs. Bachelorette Party? Or Both? Know your bride. Does she like surprises or does she like to be involved? Does she like small or large gatherings? Plan something that best suits her personality. Is she more likely to want am intimate dinner with her closest gal pals or a weekend-long party in Montreal? Work it out, but schedule it at least two weeks prior to the wedding.

Keep Calm and Carry On A week before the wedding she’ll likely be stressing, having nightmares, and she might be a freak show. Your job is to make sure the bride is calm and enjoying the moment. Plan an eye mask the night before the wedding, field calls from her fiancé and wedding vendors, make sure her mother is okay the morning of the wedding, reapply her lipstick during the photo session, and beam the warmest smile you’ve got her way.

travels with epicurus

A Journey to a Greek Island in Search of a Fulfilled Life Daniel Klein Daniel Klein journeys to the Greek island Hydra to discover the secrets of aging happily. Drawing on the lives of his Greek friends, as well as philosophers ranging from Epicurus to Sartre, Klein learns to appreciate old age as a distinct and extraordinarily valuable stage of life. He uncovers simple pleasures that are uniquely available late in life, as well as headier pleasures that only a mature mind can fully appreciate. A travel book, a witty and accessible meditation, and an optimistic guide to living well, Travels with Epicurus is a delightful jaunt to the Aegean and through the terrain of old age led by a droll philosopher.

Watch the Pounds Disappear Without Watching What You Eat! David Zinczenko In The 8-Hour Diet, David Zinczenko and Peter Moore present a paradigm-shifting plan that allows readers to eat all the foods that they love, while losing those extra pounds that they hate. But it’s so simple it’s like clockwork, literally. Research shows that by focusing their diet on 8 critical, nutrient-rich Superfoods—and eating as they normally would, but only within an 8-hour window each day—readers really can eat whatever they want, while losing weight faster than they ever imagined. The timing mechanism is such that it will reset a dieter’s metabolism so that he or she can enter fat-burning mode first thing in the morning— and stay there all day long.

‘blush , l ac e , sof t a n d f e m i n i n e’ these were some of the words that conveyed what I wanted to showcase. As a wedding planner and designer I am a sap for all of the small details that make weddings so pretty. At the same time, I wanted to showcase that sometimes simplicity is all you need. I had a vision of a breathtaking bride that oozed femininity. We combined vintage and modern, while keeping it very ethereal & subdued.
