The Original Pretty Woman Opera Carolina stages La traviata in January

W

hat beloved movie follows this plot? Boy meets “working” girl. Boy saves girl from the streets. Boy falls for girl, but class differences threaten to tear them apart. Even based on that synopsis, you probably know it’s Pretty Woman. But long before the 1990 movie that made Julia Roberts famous, there was Verdi’s La traviata. In both the movie and the opera, an outside force tries to keep the lovers apart. In Pretty Woman, it’s Jason Alexander’s despicable character. In La traviata, the suitor’s father plays the bad guy. Violetta Valéry is La traviata’s glamorous Parisian courtesan. Like Vivian (Roberts’ character) Violetta meets a man of means who whisks her away from her old life. Society frowns on the matches, however, because neither Violetta nor Vivian were born into wealthy families. No wonder Vivian cries when Edward (Richard Gere) takes her to the opera – which is, of course, La traviata. She’s watching the opera on which the movie she’s in was based. How meta is that?

When Edward comes to Vivian’s apartment at the end of Pretty Woman to win her back, he’s blaring (what else?) a piece from La traviata from his limo. But La traviata is less of a fairy tale compared to its Hollywood remake. In Verdi’s grand opera, Violetta is gravely ill. Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 Moulin Rouge! – also a reconfiguring of Verdi’s work – stuck closer to the source. Satine, played by Nicole Kidman, is the beautiful courtesan with a fatal disease. Love always saves the day in Hollywood. But opera is more like real life. So prepare for a three-hanky finale when Opera Carolina brings La traviata to the stage. How real is opera? La traviata is based on a real love story. Marie Duplessis was a famously beautiful Parisian courtesan who died of tuberculosis at just 23. Clearly, her story is timeless. So is the music she inspired. In fact, the prelude to La traviata is featured in 50 Shades of Grey – the most contemporary of romances. La traviata – the story and the music – has influenced art and culture since its 1853 premiere. But there’s nothing like the original.

Interesting Facts About Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

hat do you get when you combine seven brothers with incredible musical talent? You get Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – a family group consisting of seven blood brothers (half brothers and full brothers). They began their musical training at the ages 4 and 5 by their father, jazz trumpeter/ band leader Phil Cohran (Earth, Wind & Fire, Chaka Kahn, Sun Ra). The brothers went on to form the Phil Cohran Youth Ensemble in 1990 and toured the United States with Cohran. Later in 1999, the brothers formed their own group, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Here are some interesting facts about Hypnotic Brass Ensemble:

1

All seven brothers either play the trombone or trumpet, except for one brother who plays the baritone horn.

2

Each brother has a nickname in the group: Gabriel "Hudah" Hubert plays the trumpet, Saiph "Cid" Graves plays the trombone, Amal "Baji" Hubert plays the trumpet, Jafar Baji "Yoshi" Graves plays the trumpet and is the band leader, Seba "Clef" Graves plays the trombone, Tarik "Smoove" Graves plays the trumpet, and Uttama "Rocco" Hubert plays the baritone horn.

3

The sound of this group can be described as classic brass mixed with generous doses of hip-hop, soul and funk.

4

Originally from Chicago, this group has performed nationally and internationally at famous venues such as Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Sydney Opera House and Carnegie Hall.

5

The group has a documentary called Brothers Hypnotic, which explores their music, work ethic, life and experience of being raised by their jazz legend father Phil Cohran.

6 7

According to a 2014 interview with londininstero.com, this group adopted the name Hypnotic in 2000 after they started realizing their “psychedelic brassy jazz was causing passers-by on the street to become mesmerized.” The group is continuing to tour and working on the next project titled “Bad Boys of Jazz.” Outside of the brothers, additional ensemble members include Kevin Hunt on guitar, Hashim Bunch on bass, and Cinque Kemp on drums.

Wake Up and Experience Sleeping Beauty

leeping Beauty’s timeless tale of a beautiful princess, a dashing prince and the triumph of good over evil with a single kiss has delighted audiences for years. The ballet was originally choreographed in 1890 by Marius Petipa, with music composed by Tchaikovsky. Sleeping Beauty’s choreographer, Charlotte Ballet Artistic Director JeanPierre Bonnefoux, draws on his past experience to bring something special to his version of Sleeping Beauty. “I have a unique perspective on Petipa and Tchaikovsky because of my tenure as a principal dancer at Paris Opera Ballet and New York City Ballet,” Bonnefoux said.

Bonnefoux is known for creating spectacular storybook ballets like Nutcracker, Cinderella and Peter Pan. “Sleeping Beauty is the essence of classical ballet, and I believe Charlotteans will enjoy the opulent sets and costumes of this spectacular performance,” said Bonnefoux. Sleeping Beauty’s cast of over 80 features the professional dancers of Charlotte Ballet. These dancers from around the world live and work in Charlotte, rehearsing at the Patricia McBride & Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance uptown. Join us in Sleeping Beauty’s enchanted kingdom, as this beloved childhood story leaves you feeling happily ever after.

The Shoes Behind the Steps in Riverdance

T

he international Irish dance phenomenon is back by popular demand with Riverdance – The 20th Anniversary World Tour, coming to Ovens Auditorium Jan. 31-Feb. 5. Riverdance features Irish step dance, a style of dance characterized by a stiff upper body and quick oot movements. Combined with energetic movement and elaborate costumes, Riverdance has been wowing audiences for 20 years. Special shoes are used to create the famous steps. These shoes may remind you of tap shoes, but they differ slightly. Unlike tap dancing, where the "tap" of the shoe creates percussion with feet, Irish step dance has both hard shoes, which make sounds similar to tap shoes, and soft shoes, which are similar to ballet slippers. Hard shoes and soft shoes vary depending on the type of dance and the dancer. The hard shoe – also called a jig shoe or heavy shoe – is made with fibe glass tips instead of metal. Soft shoes, or ghillies, are similar to ballet slippers and are made of black leather with lace from toe to ankle. Like ballet slippers, soft shoes do not make noise when dancing and are worn by female dancers and in group dances with two or more people. Male dancers wear "reel shoes," which may remind you of an Oxford or jazz shoe. These shoes also have black leather, but they have fibe glass heels allowing dancers to click them together.

MUSICAL SCENES ACT I: During the annual uptown holiday street party, Maria-Clara is upset by her parents’ constant bickering. The mysterious Drosselmeyer appears, bringing magical toys to the party. After the party breaks up, Maria-Clara heads home, but on her way, she runs into the menacing Mouse Crew. The Nutcracker, aided by a magic pair of sneakers, defeats the Mouse King and the couple enjoys the romance of winter’s first snowfall. ACT II: Drosselmeyer meets Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker and takes them back in time to the Land of Sweets nightclub on New Year’s Eve, 1984. We Inspire Community. Something special happens when we experience a performance in a group – quite different from seeing it alone. We FEEL it more intensely. Shared experiences also build understanding and empathy among the participants. Diverse communities need collective experience more than ever. We inspire community … through the arts. Blumenthal Performing Arts has been entertaining and inspiring our community since 1992.
