It is Sunday March 25th, the sun shining and spring flowers are brightening up the streets of Clonakilty. A long leisurely lunch and then off to De Barras.. We arrive in De Barras bar, there is a nice buzz about the place and the good humoured bar staff advise us that there is live music starting at nine thirty if we are interested. So live music it is, advertised as Southern Belles the publicity tells us that there are five local Singer Songwriters performing, we get the drinks in and find a seat in a fairly busy Folk club at the rear of the premises, lots of chat as people keep arriving and the place fills up. The lights dim and a young girl takes to the stage, she introduces herself as Paula Gómez and welcomes us all to a night of music with herself and her friends. We are totally taken aback by the powerful voice and amazing songs as she plays three self penned tunes, next we are treated to the songs and spirited performance of the youngest member of this troupe Eve Clague, with a collection of tunes in a different style, already a great night out for sure. After Eve, we are introduced to another talented performer Míde Houlihan, another style, strident powerful and full of energy with songs to match. Christine Deady is next to take the stage, relaxed confident she takes us on a journey through her set of excellent songs , with a stage presence that captivates, and, then just to take us on a further journey, the softly spoken Paula Kingston arrives to the stage and proceeds to absolutely charm everybody with some beautifully crafted songs, full of stories, and a voice which captures every nuance of the emotions present. So,happy with the night, then reappears young Miss Gómez, thanking her friends, the crew and all of us for attending and proceeds to sing five more fantastic tunes, each one full of melody, a voice that draws on the depth and richness of her Blues influences. I can only hope to be lucky enough to see this show again !! Info:
