PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Nancy Cummins

A

PLUMBING & MECHANICAL INDUSTRY MAKES THE STATE A BETTER PLACE

s I am writing this we have just gone through a devastating event that cost the lives of forty-nine (49) individuals. Not only was it inspiring to see the efforts and professionalism of the first responders, but also uplifting to see the courage and assistance from perfect strangers doing their best to assist in anyway possible. As a nation, we can be most proud of that kindness as we search our hearts for answers in light of what happened. This is why the timing of our yearly Volunteer Issue of the MPMCA Magazine is so special and important. We are so proud of the work our member contractors and their employees, along with our Association Representatives have accomplished over the last year. As President of the MPMCA, along with our Executive Committee and Board of Directors, I would like to extend our thanks to you and express how proud we are of your accomplishments. I want to personally let you know what an outstanding job you’ve done and continue to do for the health and wellness of the communities you serve and those close to your hearts. With your help, we have created a better place to live. The broad definition of volunteering is offering to do work for no compensation, but people tend to do work for organizations that have some personal meaning for them that gives them fulfillment. Volunteers are greatly needed, and in fact, many organizations, like ours, depend on them. The compassion of our members shown to the people we serve is an inspiration to us all. I’ve noticed how you treat everyone with respect and kindness, no matter the situation. We all know how stressful it can be for people who find themselves in need of the services we provide, and your actions go a long way toward helping them keep their dignity. I just want you to know that your hard work has not gone unnoticed. Whether you are involved in the more traditional industry related programs, or something more simplistic, your dedication to this industry is something to be proud of year-round. The HEAT’S ON Project, Waters Off, Habitat for Humanity, Christmas in April or July are programs that have a large following and make a big impact, but let’s please not forget that if you install and service plumbing and mechanical equipment to help insure safety and productive operations, it makes a big impact, too. You may even simply install new carbon monoxide and smoke detectors for people in need. All of these acts of kindness and generosity make a tremendous difference and you should be proud of your efforts. I know we are. Volunteers are worth their weight in gold. They share their time and talents without any compensation, and often without any hesitation or thanks needed. Thank you for your continued efforts and heartfelt presence in this community we call an industry. [6]

Flint PMC In Flint, Obama gives shout out to union pipe trades The weight of a presidential visit on May 4 emphasized the tragic importance of the city’s poisoned water situation. President Barack Obama’s motorcade traveled past the Flint water plant while driving along I-475 to Flint Northwestern High School for a meeting with community members following his visit to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. During his visit, which included an hour-long talk with a group that included Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Local 370 Business Manager Harold Harrington, Obama sipped (filtered) city water, urged citizens to continue to check their water for lead, and paid tribute to the men and women of the pipe trades unions for their selfless work on behalf of the stricken city. Obama said that the city of Flint has suffered from neglect long before the current water crisis and he said he hoped that the focus now would move to improving the city. “We have to take what has been a crisis and turn this into an opportunity to rebuild Flint even better than before,” Obama said. “I’m confident that we can do that if we are working together.” Obama lauded the volunteer work of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipe Fitters. On January 30, about 470 Union plumbers and pipe fitters from across lower Michigan worked out of the Plumbers and Pipe Fitter Local 370 union hall and spent a good chunk of that Saturday in Flint installing water filters, replacing fixtures and bringing lead testing kits and bottled water to more that 1,500 homes. “We have members of one union, UA Local 370 Flint, who have donated tens of thousands of dollars and ten thousand hours of their time,” Obama said. “ They have installed thousands of filters and installed hundreds of faucets by going door to door, night and day. They’re not asking for anything in return, they’re just doing the right thing.”

For his part, Harrington, a Flint resident whose home’s water was tested and found to have high lead levels, declined to drink the filtered water after the roundtable conference. He has become a defacto go-to guy for local and national media seeking information about the plumbing hardware involved in the Flint water crisis, making appearances on NBC Nightly News, and the Rachel Maddow show on MSNBC. “A year ago, who would have believed that I would be sitting next to the president of the United States at a roundtable, talking about Flint’s water,” Harrington said. “It’s still hard to believe this has all happened.” [ 24 ]

Union Plumbers Invade Flint AgainÂ

Marty Mulcahy provided pictures and text—Thank you

On Saturday, May 21, a group of about 125 union plumbers, pipe fitters and sprinkler fitters from around Michigan came to Flint. There were volunteers present from Toledo and New Mexico, too. Their mission: install 1,000 shower filters and new low-flow shower heads in homes and apartments of Flint residents. They actually installed 700 filters that day. The plumbers also installed 40 kitchen faucets, replacing older fixtures that wouldn't accept filters. The pipe trades volunteers used Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Local 370 as their base. It was the second major union-backed effort sponsored by the pipe trades this year to help Flint residents. On Saturday, Jan. 30, some 470 plumbers and pipe fitters from around Michigan fanned out across Flint, installing faucet filters - and new faucets, if necessary - as well as delivering bottled water to more than 1,500 homes. That's in addition to the similar ongoing work by Local 370 apprentices during the crisis. Local 370 Business Manager Harold Harrington told the assembled pipe trades volunteers that for the past four months, water has been tested in Flint homes, and besides high lead readings, copper and other heavy metals have been detected. The work of the volunteers was made possible by a great deal of pre-planning at Local 370, by business representatives Bruce Roth, Ben Ranger, Jeff Peake and Kevin Gaby.

The Bay Area Association is proud to provide monetary help to these great organizations. Johnson Controls and the Bay Area Association teamed up this year to provide support in the effort of providing clean water for the residents of Flint. A large community outpouring provided over 600 cases of bottled water to the Flint residents.

Risk Management that

MEASURES UP Ineffective risk management could give you plenty of wrong things to measure

W

e live in a measurement-focused society: how many; how far; how fast; how much more, or less, than last

year.

Popular thought often asserts that if it’s not measurable, it’s not a worthwhile goal. How can you justify spending time and money on something you cannot prove or quantify? On the surface, that may not be easy, but consider the following:

Now, it must be said that all the value-added risk management applications in the world will not keep all bad things from happening. But, are you confident your firm is doing everything it can to help eliminate preventable risks by executing good, consistent risk management practices? To learn more about Federated Insurance contact your local Federated Marketing Representative, or visit www.federatedinsurance.com

In a society focused on measurements, realize that you will rarely know, or be able to measure, those catastrophic events that did not occur due to the execution of good, consistent risk management practices. It is still important to measure standard business benchmarks: injury-free days or an increase or decrease in claims or accidents, for instance. But, how do you measure… •

the car accident that never happened because your business implemented a distracted driving policy?

the fatality that did not occur because you requested an employee’s motor vehicle records, which uncovered several previous driving incidents?

the employee who did not cause an unsafe situation because your drug- and alcohol-free workplace program got that person the help needed to be fully functional on the job?

the firm that did not go out of business, saving dozens of jobs, because it had a well-executed business continuation plan in place when the owner passed away?

You may never be able to fully measure the positive effects a risk management culture has on your business. But, you will definitely be able to measure the negative ones. Fall 2016 | Michigan Plumbing & Mechanical Contractor
