BREATHING SPACE FOR RATE PAYERS AS DEPUTY MAYOR TACKLES ISSUE HEAD ON Deputy Mayor Mark Greenhill has successfully moved a resolution at Council in the last few weeks that replaced a proposal which would have seen rates in towns from Warrimoo down to Lapstone increase.

“My great concern was that the proposed process was too quick and that most residents were not aware it was happening.

“It’s always a wonderful Spring day to be out and about with great crowds” said Diane from Blue Dragon Books, “We have two streets of over 100 stalls and live entertainment and rides in Glenbrook Park”

Cr Greenhill said, “There are inequities that need to be fixed in our rating structure. There are people in places like Lawson and Springwood who need to have their rates fixed. But I do not support jacking rates up across the whole of the lower mountains when there does not seem to be a justification for it.”

“So for next year rates will remain as they are. “

“I also think it is fair to give people breathing space...” “I also think it is fair to give people breathing space. After all, they have only just paid a special rate variation and there is the State Government imposed rate pegging to contend with.

Organisers are looking for stallholders and performers or groups wanting to showcase their creative efforts and talents. In the past there have been local school bands, dance groups and solo performers so if you are a business or performer looking for someplace to tune up your stagecraft and get some exposure – this could be your chance!

“My resolution will deal with the rating inequalities starting with a review that progressively fixes these issues over the next two years.”

“Increasing peoples’ rates at a time when there is a recommendation by officers at Council to give the lower mountains less new capital spending than is proposed for a single dunny block in Blackheath is outrageous and I won’t cop it.”

“My resolution will deal with the rating inequalities starting with a review that progressively fixes these issues over the next two years. “The first report back to Council will be in December this year and as inequalities arise, we will fix them.

When We Have Wings Book Review by Janet Cahill I love to curl up on a cold winter’s day with a good book and escape into the world of fiction, and this book fully satisfied that need. Written by a local Blue Mountains author, Claire Corbett’s debut novel When We

Have Wings ‘is set in a world divided into fliers and non-fliers and asks how far would you go and how much would you sacrifice to be able to fly? ‘. In telling this story, Corbett takes us into the future and introduces us to Zeke Fowler, a non-flyer private investigator who unfolds to the reader the sad, and beautiful tale of the central heroine, Peri Almond. Peri is a young girl who refuses to be trapped into poverty, and naively accepts terms for attaining her wings to become a flier that will put her life in danger. She matures quickly as she deals with murder, betrayal, and finally finding that love and freedom are to be cherished and protected. Corbett has written with such detail that we can easily visualise the world of Peri and Zeke and grasp the technology and

MULTISPORT RACE SET FOR 2012 Mountain Sports has announced a new challenge for fitness enthusiasts in 2012. The Nepean Odyssey, a race which will challenge participants in 3 disiplines will start and finish in Euroka and include both individuals and teams. The course consists of a 41km mountain bike ride, an 18km kayak and a 19km trail run. There is prizemoney for the winning female and male and more details can be found at

Running series set for big second season. Not for profit association, Running Wild will launch its second season of trail running events in the Blue Mountains area on Sunday September 25th 2011. The first race of the season will be held in the Blue Mountains National Park in Glenbrook with a 15km run to Mt Portal Lookout and back. The Inaugural season attracted in excess of 850 runners throughout the 9 event series and the association is confident these numbers will increase in the second year. “it is our goal to bring the wonders of trail running to the masses while keeping the events low key and environmentally friendly” said Rod Cutler, association Vice President. “In the first season we had races on trails that had never had races before and we are looking to continue the trend this season” The Running Wild season runs from September through until April and all races are on the website. landscapes of the future. It is a story that looks at social issues and in this case, how fliers dominate society when they can abuse their position of power through wealth, politics and religion. The ethical and moral questions of genetic engineering are raised, as is the dilemma that any parent faces in ensuring the best for their children. And in dealing with these issues, perhaps Corbett asks the reader to consider would we, could we, consider a time when we have wings ? Planning for Retirement Getting smart about retirement and optimising your available superannuation is easy when you know how. This is what a financial planner can help you with. If you are nearing retirement and want to maximise your retirement potential - planning is better than pondering.... Adam Mondy from Mondy Walpole financial services gives some examples below of how you can use what you have in a smarter way to create more for when it matters. Adam is also offering a complimentry Transition to Retirement analysis to Echo readers on mention of this article. With a little bit of planning John saved an additional $76,000. John at 55 …… John, aged 55, was earning $80 000 a year with a current superannuation balance of $100,000 and should retire with approx $274,000 in super. With the help of a Transition to Retirement plan, John’s final super balance would be $350 000.

DO YOU HAVE AN ENDANGERED FOREST ON YOUR PROPERTY? In 2011, International Year of the Forest, take a moment to explore the magnificent environment in which you live - you may discover a highly significant area of local natural heritage right at your backdoor. In the Blue Mountains, we are fortunate to live in an area rich with diverse forests. Some of these, like the Sun Valley Cabbage Gum Forest and Blue Mountains Shale Cap Forests in Springwood, are unique to the Blue Mountains – they occur nowhere else in the world.

That’s an increase of $76 000 over a ten year period. This strategy is tailored to each individual person and has many advantages. “The key in this example” said Adam, “is that John is not taking any extra risk with his money - his super is in the “Growth” portfolio and would stay in that portfolio, he can rollback and stop this process at any stage and it is was relatively inexpensive to set up” Adam continues “On top of this John maintains exactly the same take home income he had before the strategy.” Once John turns 60 the benefits of this strategy are even greater, as nearly all of the superannuation is in a tax free environment.

The Lower Blue Mountains in particular is home to many of our rare and endangered forests. Listed as endangered ecological communities, these forests are protected under the Threatened Species Conservation Act (1995) for fear of becoming extinct. These include the Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest, Shale Sandstone Transition Forest, and Blue Gum Riverflat Forest. In the early years of European settlement, bushland was heavily cleared for farming and timber. In the years that followed, the growth of agriculture and residentialdevelopment in the Blue Mountains caused yet more of the forests to be felled. Today, little remains of these original forests. Rich in biodiversity and home to rareanimal and plant species, these towering forests are a precious part of our natural heritage in the Blue Mountains. In coming months, Blue Mountains City Council will host a series of Endangered Forest Workshops to inspire and assist residents to discover more about the rare and threatened forests in the Lower Blue Mountains. Details will be available soon. In the meantime, check out whether you have a rare forest on your property. Go to: and click on the Interactive Map link on the home page.

Please note- This information is of a general education nature and should not be acted on. Individual financial circumstances vary and a tailored solution, specific for your financial situation, should be developed in consultation with your financial planner.
