I wandered lonely as a cloud that floats on high o’er vales and hills When all at once I saw a crowd A host of golden daffodils...Wordsworth Spring arrives and suddenly daffodils appear, nature becomes alive again and with the springtime comes the Canadian Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil campaign. A time when 20 thousand volunteers become visible across Canada raising funds to fight cancer. This year the Society added another symbol, the Daffodil Pin. This was a pilot project in B.C. and the Yukon and backed by newspaper and T.V. promotions. The Society wanted everyone to wear the pin to show those stricken with cancer were not alone in their fight against cancer. The pins were available from donation boxes in over 50 locations in Mission thanks to the support of businesses. All door to door canvassers wore the pins in the Month of April which was declared Daffodil month. We also had Connor, a Great Pyrenees, as the Mission Unit Mascot on scene at many locations during the campaign. This pilot project was an outstanding success throughout BC. Thanks to all the volunteers and the public for their generous support. The Canadian Cancer Society, Fraser Valley Region, has volunteer unit offices in Hope, Chilliwack, Mission, Abbotsford, Langley, Surrey and Tsawwassen. The following services are available through the unit offices: Drivers’ program taking patients to and from treatment centres - Lodges in larger centres where patients can stay during treatment sessions, or for family members - In some cases assistance with medical costs can be provided. The Society also has supportprograms through the Cancer Connection at 1.888.939.3333. During the year, volunteers organize a variety of fund raising events in their communities - Weekend pole sits at malls or other area centres - In June, Relay for Life Rallies are held in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Langley - In September, Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley is held. The R.C.M.P. on bicycles, travel from Tsawwassen to Boston Bar stopping at most locations along the way, visiting schools and rallies at each location. All these proceeds are for support of kids with cancer - Volunteers are also seen at most community events throughout the year, giving out information and raising awareness of the Society’s work. If you are interested in volunteering with the Society or need information, please visit the C.C.S. website at – www. Mission Unit is located at 33079 First Ave. 604-820-3166 or email: Fire Fighters collected donations & distributed Pins & daffodils on location at The Junction Mall in Mission.

The Ridge Meadows South Asian Cultural Society (RIMSACS) held its 3rd annual Gala on the 6th of March this year, where it wined and dined the lord mayor, local councillors as well as numerous local dignities. Since its inception, the organisation has held in high esteem its desire to demonstrate the willingness of the local South Asian community to reflect the rich diversity and heritage of the people of South Asia and their contribution towards Canadian society, whilst upholding the very best values of its own culture and that of Canada. The theme for the evening was one of highlighting the importance of continued integration and development through forging new relationships here in Canada whilst consolidating existing relationships with family and friends back in India. The evenings key note speech Delivered by Paul Gurm addressed the importance of developing these relationships and their benefits to us all, which was followed by a number of traditional South Asian dance routines and musical melodies, not to mention the stream of excellent food which has now become customary at the eagerly awaited Gala. During the evening, the non profit making organisation made two generous donations equalling $14,000 from the profits generated from this year’s event, the grateful recipients were Maple Ridge Hospital Foundation and Cythera House. Representatives from both organisations were present to receive their donations and express their appreciation and explained how the funds would be put to good use. The organisation sees itself building on the strong foundations its founders have laid down and looks progressively towards enhancing its efforts and contributions within the local community it represents and the social fabric of the community that it resides in. We have lots of new faces this year are looking forward to establishing a few more competitive crews. Registration for the CanoeKayak Canada signature CanoeKids summer day camps is now open at Participants between the ages of 9 and 14 will find fun, friends and challenges at these camps trying various types of paddle sport boats. Heat a small non-stick frying pan until hot, add nuts and brown, keeping the nuts moving to prevent burning. Remove from heat and chop (or batter with a rolling pin!). Mix all the veggies together in a large bowl. Add the nuts and raisins. For the dressing put mustard, seasoning and oil in a clean jam jar or small bowl. Add vinegar, parsley and boiling water - put the lid on the jam jar and shake or whisk the ingredients in the bowl until cloudy. Pour dressing over salad and mix thoroughly. Chill for at least 20 mins. Mix again before serving.
