RACCONTI IDM ALUMNI NETWORK Stay connected! The IDM alumni network offers participants of past RACCONTI programs the possibility of staying connected - not only amongst themselves but also to IDM, Film Fund of South Tyrol. It has been conceived as a platform for exchanging experiences, presenting new projects and sharing news. Through regularly scheduled networking meetings, the writers also have the opportunity to meet other RACCONTI alumni and the program’s partners in person. The RACCONTI alumni may thus continue growing and learning in a steady manner, through high-quality, exclusive training opportunities offered on an annual basis. Through a regular newsletter, the RACCONTI alumni will also be kept up-to-date about new developments and trends that affect not only the TV and film markets in Italy, Germany and Austria, but also IDM and South Tyrol in general. The program allows the RACCONTI alumni to stay connected to South Tyrol as a film location; the platform can be used as a source of inspiration for the development of new material as well as for professional exchange between colleagues. ABOUT RACCONTI

Refine your skills, find your peers, build your network, write your story. RACCONTI. Under the label RACCONTI, IDM Film Fund of South Tyrol, runs a script development program, aimed specifically at screen writers working in the Italian and German-speaking markets. Its flagship is the RACCONTI | IDM Script Lab: a script development program and advanced training initiative in English for professional screenwriters who want to develop projects and refine their skills with the help of international experts and in creative collaboration with colleagues from other countries. This cross-cultural aspect is as essential to the program as the changing focus on different genres and the challenge we set ourselves: to improve storytelling by exploring new working methods. Over the course of the years RACCONTI has adapted to commercial trends and shifted from the development of feature and TV films to TV series. Over the last years writers have collaborated together in a Writers‘ Room in various constellations, in partnership with production companies from Italy and Germany and under the guidance of consultants from the UK and the US. The RACCONTI | IDM Script Lab is tailored to the creative needs and the working realities of writers. The time span of a program is six months. Each program consists of two workshops (app. one week each), which are held in South Tyrol, and a phase of individual work, accompanied by Skype consultations. Within this time span a project is usually developed from a core idea into a marketable treatment or concept. At the end of each program results are presented to the industry at festivals in Italy and Germany. In the workshops the focus is on the practical development of a concept. However, masterclasses with prominent screenwriters, showrunners, commissioning editors and producers provide valuable insights into the craft of writing and the tricks of the trade. The program’s long term goal is on the one hand to develop projects that would be suitable for co-production between Italy and German-speaking countries, can be set/ shot in South Tyrol and are aimed at an international audience. On the other hand we aim to train and bring together talents who want to create stories beyond the confines of their national markets. In order to foster creative partnerships between the writers on a long-term basis we have established the RACCONTI Alumni network. As a training initiative with a strong connection to the region South Tyrol, the RACCONTI program is developing with its own roots and cultural diversity in mind: since 2015 two new branches of the program have been set up, aimed especially at local writers: the RACCONTI Local Talent | IDM Mentoring Program and the RACCONTI Local Plus | IDM Short Film Program share the same mission as the flagship program but with the specific goal of helping talented local writers to break into the industry.

All professional screenwriters may apply, but the program is targeted specifically at writers from the Italian and German language areas. Talented writers from South Tyrol (including those from outside of the industry) are expressly urged to apply. On what type of projects does RACCONTI focus? The program is aimed at projects that are suitable for a co-production between Italy and Germany, Austria or Switzerland or/and are orientated towards an international audience or/and that have a connection to South Tyrol. The thematic focus may shift each year. How does the selection process of the participants work? Candidates are required, within the predefined deadline, to submit their CV and filmography,a letter describing their motivation and a sample of their work. What does the program offer? The program offers the opportunity to work within an intercultural team, under the guidance of international experts. Over the course of two workshops in South Tyrol and through individual dramaturgical consultations (online), participants develop their material into market-ready treatments or concepts. In addition to the story consultants who guide the development process, these include guest lecturers who focus on current themes relevant to the target markets. When does RACCONTI take place? The Script Lab is an annual IDM event and takes place between early spring and summer. The call for applications is usually announced around the middle of October; the application deadline is in January. How do the screenwriters benefit? RACCONTI #4

Other than Writing Matteo and Sarah are the founders of Silent Storm Productions, an independent production company specialized in short and feature-length documentaries.

For the RACCONTI #4 Script Lab, BLS worked together with two production companies from Italy and Germany, Palomar Television & Film Production and Letterbox Filmproduktion, establishing a Writers' Room in partnership with each of these highly esteemed partners.

Short CV Matteo is an engineer turned filmmaker, Sarah is an anthropologist with a strong focus on social issues. For the past five years they've been working together on a series of documentaries and multimedia projects both in Italy and abroad, especially in Asia. Their continuous quest for new ways of telling stories has led them to directing music videos and ads. Stato di Gloria will be their first endeavor in fiction.

Each of these Writers’ Rooms involved a team of three to four screenwriters working together over two writing sessions in spring 2015. RACCONTI #2 Following the success of the first year, a new approach was adopted for RACCONTI #2: the development of concepts for television series. Here, too, vision was combined with a pinch of pragmatism: the development of a television series is more difficult and definitely requires more teamwork – not to mention a good dose of optimism. Yet it is precisely this genre which, in the face of declining broadcaster budgets and the increasingly international viewing habits of audiences, has most to offer for European co-productions. They also have the added advantage of promoting a filming location over a long period of time. RACCONTI #2 threw down quite a particular gauntlet: To develop a TV series that is tailored for the Italian and German-speaking markets. Eleven writers from Italy, Germany and Austria, selected by a jury, had the opportunity to participate in the BLS RACCONTI Script Lab. Over the course of two 3-day workshops in South Tyrol and through individual dramaturgical consultations (online) between February and July 2013, the writers were developing their series with the support of international experts. To conclude the program, all projects were pitched at a BLS event at the Munich Film Festival and at the Roma Fiction Fest. Additionally a jury selected the project Morgenrot by Paolo Girelli and Gerardo Fontana (who unexpectedly passed away at the end of June) for a € 5,000 Development Award and a three-week writing and research trip to South Tyrol. 57

“Screenwriters wanted in South Tyrol” – under this motto, in the fall of 2011, BLS launched the writers’ support program RACCONTI #1, primarily to encourage writers from the German and Italian-speaking regions to submit ideas for screenplays with a reference to South Tyrol. The idea behind the initiative was to encourage as much interesting and ambitious film material as possible, which have a reference to South Tyrol or, to some extent, have a connection to the area, in order to bond film topics to the region. Additionally, RACCONTI intended to support talented writers and to help them developing a network within the industry. The new BLS initiative got off to a rapid start: almost 160 authors took note of the call for entries and submitted their ideas, making the final selection of 11 screenplay ideas, from the wealth of creative projects submitted, all the more difficult for the international panel of experts in the jury. The selected writers were invited to further develop their stories under the guidance of professional tutors, during a three-day Script Lab in January 2012 in South Tyrol. This was followed by an online tutoring session and an additional workshop four months later, tailored to the writers’ individual needs. The projects Zweitland, a drama by the South Tyrolean author Michael Kofler, and the mountain western Crossing the Green Line by the Berlin-based author Claas Junge were selected as the winners by the jury and each received a cash prize and a 6 week writer’s residence in South Tyrol. The projects Fräulein by Caterina Carone and Iceman by Brendan Foley were also selected to be pitched during the international INCONTRI film conference. 67

The film funding department of IDM has served as a financial backer and service partner for film productions since 2010. The stated goal is to raise South Tyrol’s profile as a film location and to support funding for film projects that are realized wholly or partly in South Tyrol. The focus of the film funding is mainly economic. The instrument of film funding is designed to encourage investments in the province that contribute to the development and strengthening of the film infrastructure. Due to the geographical location of the province and the attendant bilingualism, IDM looks beyond borders as a matter of course and seeks to create an interface between the three film markets of Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Germany. IDM thus places special focus on promoting co-productions between these countries. In addition, IDM tries to encourage and strengthen professional exchange and mutual understanding of prevailing production and financing conditions.
