Transiberiana. L’immenso cantiere di questa ferrovia rimase per una decina d’anni incompiuto per le difficolta di esecuzione della tratta attorno la lago Baikal (la CircumBaikal). Durante questo periodo il collegamento fu garantito da un rompighiaccio (in seguito chiamato Baikal) che funzionava da traghetto per vagoni ferroviari. Ordinato in Gran Bretagna, il 29 novembre fu trasportato sul posto diviso in sezioni e fu assemblato a Listvyanka nel 1898-99.
Successivamente venne costruito un altro rompighiaccio più piccolo, ( chiamato Angara), per il trasporto di merci e passeggeri sulla stessa rotta. Anche questa volta le parti furono spedite dalla Gran Bretagna passando per la Transiberiana fino alle coste del Baikal. Fu assemblato e toccò per la prima volta l’acqua il 25 luglio 1900. Utilizzato durante la guerra civile, poi a lungo in disuso, nel 1991 è stato aperto come museo della storia della navigazione sul lago Baikal.
by the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway. The immense construction site of this railway remained unfinished for about ten years due to the difficulties in executing the route around Lake Baikal (the Circum-Baikal). During this time the connection was guaranteed by an icebreaker (later called Baikal) which functioned as a ferry for railway cars. Ordered in Great Britain, on November 29 it was transported to the site divided into sections and then assembled in Listvyanka in 1898-99.
Later, another smaller icebreaker (called Angara) was built to transport goods and passengers on the same route. Also this time the parts were sent from Great Britain via the Trans-Siberian to the shores of Baikal. The icebreaker was assembled and it touched water for the first time on July 25th 1900. Employed during the civil war, it then fell in disuse for a long time. Finally in 1991 it was opened as a museum of the history of navigation on Lake Baikal.
