LESLIE MARGOLIS is the author of more than fifty books for young readers, including two Annabelle Stevens books: Boys Are Dogs and Girls Acting Catty, as well as numerous Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys mysteries. She lives with her family in Park Slope, Brooklyn—which is also the hometown of Miss Maggie Brooklyn Sinclair. www.lesliemargolis.com

Dogs are disappearing in her neighborhood, and Maggie Brooklyn Sinclair knows all about it. After all, she has a semi-secret after-school gig as a professional (ok, amateur) dog-walker. Maggie hates to see a pup in trouble, so she’s even willing to help her ex-best friend Ivy recover her rescue-dog, Kermit. Kermit’s being held for ransom, and Maggie has noticed some suspicious behavior lately. But she never suspected her crush Milo could be involved . . .

Imagine a young Nancy Drew——with a dog-walking business, a twin brother, and a thoroughly modern, fresh perspective

Leslie Margolis’s pitch-perfect voice and rich characters have endeared her to tweens, and her fans will flock to this hip new series featuring a clever and lovable new heroine, Maggie Brooklyn. Advance praise for Girl’s Best Friend: “Girl’s Best Friend clips the reader onto a touching, funny story-leash that twists and turns; dogs, their humans, twins of all ages, old friends and even apartments are not what they seem at first. At least, not always. . . . Margolis leaves you wanting to look twice at every familiar gesture and setting.” —Blue Balliett, author of Chasing Vermeer “Maggie Brooklyn is a smart, funny, capable detective, and a real kid. Sequel, please.” —Adam Rex, author of The True Meaning of Smekday

Our storage locker is in the back corner of the basement and the metal, mesh door opened with a creak. I climbed over old bicycles, pushed past boxes of ski clothes and scooted under my grandma’s old dining room table (something my parents have held on to for when we move into a bigger place, which if you ask me will be never). And that’s when I found my old box of books. Here’s my secret confession: I never made it beyond the beginning of book one. Nancy seemed too perfect. Her whole life was about helping people. She didn’t even go to school or have a job, which was nice and all, but not very realistic in my opinion. And another thing? She and her friends never fought, and the entire town knew and loved her.

In short, I couldn’t relate to Nancy or her whole River Heights world. But now I put that aside because I wasn’t looking for a great read. I was looking to solve a mystery.

Bloomsbury • www.bloomsburykids.com

Real life is messier. It’s filled with clueless twin brothers and best friends who turn evil, and mysterious dog-nappers, and crushes who hardly know you exist, and won’t even take out both earbuds to listen to what you have to say.

If middle school kids are animals, Callum should have no trouble fitting in

A mix of wildness and humor, Timothy Power’s inventive writing makes him a debut author to watch. And Callum’s quest to find his place in a strange world will have readers rooting for him—when they’re not howling with laughter.

TIMOTHY POWER

1. Coyotes sometimes roam my street in Los Angeles, and it makes me feel like I’m living in the Wild. 2. My grandfather was a sea-faring Irish adventurer who would sing a rousing chanty at the drop of a hat. 3. I play keyboards in an indie band, but I have a lazy left hand that I haven’t gotten around to correcting yet. 4. When my brother and I were kids, we rescued baby possums and raised them as pets. 5. I thought loofah sponges came from the sea, until a friend of mine gave me one from a plant in his yard. I use it in the shower every morning!

Bloomsbury • www.bloomsburykids.com

As far back as Callum can really remember, he’s been living in the Wild as the furless mascot of a wolf pack. But when his pack sends him back to live with his own kind—humans—fitting in is quite a challenge. He doesn’t remember English very well, so he accidentally says his name is “Clam.” He’s spent most of his life eating fresh-killed elk, so dining with vegetarians is tricky. And when he tries to impress the Alpha student in the school cafeteria by stealing food, people seem offended!

Delana has never known her parents. Raised by her Aunt Tilley and a reclusive grandfather, Delana has led a sheltered existence, nurtured on her aunt’s wild family histories. But when Aunt Tilley dies, Delana confronts her pent-up curiosities and embarks on a quest to unravel her aunt’s fictions and draw out her mysterious grandfather. In searching for her true history, Delana finds herself, and a home in the one place she never thought to look. This moving fictional story is imagined from real antique photographs that author Tonya Bolden has collected. Bolden’s well-researched historical details about 1905 Charleston, West Virginia lend authenticity, while spare, lyrical writing make this young girl’s coming-of-age resonate.

Dr. Cuthbert Soup, the head of the Center of Unsolicited Advice, narrates this wild adventure that will lead readers straight into next season’s sequel: Another Whole Nother Story. #“A grand escapade centered around a close family of smart, helpful, likable characters who run into all sorts of oddball wanderers on the road.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Coming January 2011 Sneak Peak of Another Whole Nother Story Everyone knows that time flies when you’re having fun. What many don’t realize is that time also flies when you’re having: breakfast, lunch, a good hair day, a math test, your cake and eating it too, second thoughts, or a cow. In other words, no matter what you may be having at any given moment, time is always flying. Thus, in order to travel into the past, one must fly even faster than time itself. This can make for a very bumpy and a very long ride.

“Didn't I tell you to take care of that before we left the twenty-first century?” said Mr. Cheeseman, his fingers expertly working the controls of the LVR, fighting to keep it on course for the year 1668. I should mention, by the way, that LVR stands for Luminal Velocity Regulator. I suppose it could also stand for Large Voluminous Rats but, in this case, it does not.

A powerful YA voice turns to the paranormal with a tale of heart-stopping love, death, amnesia . . . and dangerous creatures The only thing Avery Hood can remember about the night her parents died is that she saw silver—deadly silver, moving inhumanly fast. As much as she wants to remember who killed them, she can’t, and there’s nothing left to do but try to piece her life back together. Then Avery meets the new boy in school—Ben, mysterious and beautiful, with whom she feels a connection like nothing she’s ever experienced. When Ben reveals he’s a werewolf, Avery still trusts him—at first. Then she sees sometimes his eyes flash inhuman silver. And she learns that she’s not the only one who can’t remember the night her parents died. Part murder mystery, part grief narrative, and part heart-stopping, headlong romance, Low Red Moon is a must-read for teen paranormal fans. As breathless as Twilight and as spooky as Shiver, this is a book to be devoured in one sitting—by an acclaimed YA author making her paranormal debut under the pseudonym Ivy Devlin.

I was covered in blood when the police found me. Head to toe: in my hair, on my eyelashes, in the skin between my toes. Dried so deep into my clothes they were taken away and I never saw them again. I found flecks of it under my fingernails for days after, dried reddish-brown crumbs that I clung to as they fell free, that I held as if I could somehow pull them inside me. As if I could somehow bring my parents back. I didn’t remember what happened to them. I didn’t remember finding them. I didn’t remember sitting down with their . . . with their bodies. I didn’t remember sitting with them as the night-gleaming moon rose, arching across the sky, and the stars shone. I was with them all night in the forest. I didn’t remember that either. My parents were dead. They’d died and no one knew how or why, just that it had happened. They hadn’t just died, though. My parents were murdered.

ANDREA SEIGEL is the author of two acclaimed novels for adults, Like the Red Panda and To Feel Stuff. She decided to write her first young adult novel while sitting at the kid table at a cousin’s wedding as she watched her preteen tablemates hit each other. www.andreaseigel.com

You’re way too old for the kid table . . . but it’s still the best seat in the house Ingrid Bell and her five teenage cousins are such a close-knit group that they don’t really mind sitting at the kid table—even if they have to share it with a four-year-old. But then Brianne, the oldest cousin, lands a seat at the adult table and leaves her cousins shocked and confused. What does it take to graduate from the kid table? Over the course of five family events, Ingrid chronicles the coming-of-age of her generation. Her cousins each grapple with growing pains, but it is Ingrid who truly struggles as she considers what it means to grow up. When first love comes in the form of first betrayal (he’s Brianne’s boyfriend), Ingrid is forced to question her own personality and how she fits into her family. The cousins each take their own path toward graduating into adulthood—only to realize that maybe the kid table was where they wanted to be all along. Almost a reverse coming-of-age, this touching and hilariously funny novel will appeal to any reader who has sat at the kid table . . . or is still sitting there!

I went over to the Kid Table, the real and original one with the bite marks. The good, old table. It had been festooned with a sparkly tablecloth and an arrangement of prematurely springy flowers in a huge champagne flute vase. The others were already there, flung loosely in their seats like teen emperors. I took mine. “How does it get here?” I asked, meaning the table. All these years we’d never discussed how it showed up from place to place. I’d never seen it moved from one house to another in between our family things——it always just was. “Yeah, yeah, I started wondering the same thing,” Dom said, reclined and pointing at me as if accusing me of reading his mind. “I pulled in the car after running out this morning, and it was leaning against the wall of the garage. I was halfway asleep earlier, but I feel like it wasn’t there when I left.” “Brianne’s parents had it last,” Micah said, “so get her over here and let’s kill some mystery.”

A lyrical and magical new story from the acclaimed author of The Amaranth Enchantment In a secluded village, magic sparkles on the edges of the forest. There, a young girl named Evie possesses unusually strong powers as a healer. A gypsy’s charms—no more than trinkets when worn by others—are remarkably potent when Evie ties them around her neck. Her talents, and charms, have not escaped the notice of the shy stonemason’s son. But Evie wants more than a quiet village and the boy next-door. When the prince’s carriage arrives one day, and his footman has fallen ill, Evie might just get her chance after all . . . Berry’s debut novel garnered glowing reviews and strong sales—and now she’s done it again with a beautifully woven tale to keep all readers, young and old, absolutely charmed.

“Pretty girl want to buy a pretty charm?” The woman gazed at me through penetrating, dark brown eyes. She was tall and handsome, with broad shoulders and cheekbones, and curls of salt-and-pepper hair poking out from under a red scarf. She seemed to sway slightly, as though she was half-remembering a dance, and her skirts, spangled with dots, swished around her hips. She tapped me on the nose. “I know what you need. Come, see my special charms I save, just for you.” And before I could answer, she seized my wrist. Hers tinkled with a dozen bracelets as she led me past the rings and anklets for sale in her stall. From under her table she pulled out a wooden box. Inside, on thin woven cords of colored silk, were a gorgeous riot of bangles and tokens, to be worn as pendants around the neck with the silken rope. Without thinking, I reached for a charm, a black rock polished to an incredible gloss, with a perfectly smooth hole in the center, through which a red silk cord was threaded. “How much is this one?” “Ah, you like that?” she said. She thumped her breastbone with her fingertips. “That’s the magic. Girls like you choose the one your heart needs most. Centuries ago, that very charm was worn by a duchess in Rovary.” Fiddlesticks, I thought. These look like she made them last week.

“Liam O’Connor!” “We’re s-stuck!” Liam replied. “There’s no way out!” “Listen, Liam. You have just under two minutes left to live. And that makes you perfect.” “Perfect?” The man took several steps forward. “Tell me, do you want to live?” “What! Is th-there another w-way out?” “If you come with me, Liam, there is another way. You’ll exist as a phantom, never quite in this world of ours. You’ll learn about things that can ultimately lead to madness if you let them mess with your mind. Some people choose death.” “I w-want to live!” “I must warn you . . . I’m not offering you your life, Liam. I’m offering you a way out, that’s all. The Titanic’s back is going to break in just a few seconds. If you believe in God, you might wish to join him now.” “Where’s your hand? Please! I don’t want to drown!” The old man caught his hand and held on. “Say goodbye to your life, Liam” he shouted above the thunderous din of the ship splitting in two. The last sensation that Liam was aware of was the floor of the passageway giving way, and falling . . . falling through darkness.

A riveting exploration of how love can lead to lies On the surface, Emily Meckler leads the perfect life. She has three best friends, two loving parents, and the ideal setup at the Connecticut prep school where her father is the headmaster. But Emily also suffers from devastating nightmares about fire and water, and nobody knows why. Then the enigmatic Del Sugar enters her life, and Emily is immediately swept away—but her passionate relationship with Del is just the first of many things that aren’t quite what they seem in Emily’s life. As the lies she’s been told start to unravel, Emily must set out to discover the truth regarding her nightmare; on a journey that will lead her to question everything she thought she knew about love, family, and her own idyllic past. This companion novel to Warman’s critically acclaimed Breathless proves that sometimes the biggest lies are told to the people you love the most.

JESSICA WARMAN is also the author of Breathless. She has an MA in creative writing and studied at prep school and Yale. She lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Debut Discovery

A lyrically written, powerful exploration of a girl’s struggle within a hidden society Inside the closed community of Borough Park, where most Chassidim live, the rules of life are very clear, determined by an ancient script written thousands of years before down to the last detail—and abuse has never been a part of it. But when thirteen-year-old Gittel learns of the abuse her best friend has suffered at the hands of her own family member, the adults in her community try to persuade Gittel, and themselves, that nothing happened. Forced to remain silent, Gittel begins to question everything she was raised to believe.

EISHES CHAYIL is a pseudonym for a descendant of some of the main founders and leaders of Chassidut in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Poland. She was raised in a world of Chassidic schools, synagogues, and summer camps. She works as a journalist for two international orthodox papers located in Brooklyn, New York.

Master storyteller K. M. Grant brings the dramatic saga of young love and religious conflict to a satisfying end in the final book of the Perfect Fire trilogy. As winter falls upon the Occitan, Raimon must find a way to recover the Blue Flame from the hands of the evil White Wolf. But his plan could lead him back to the pyre—and he might not be so lucky to escape from it again. Meanwhile, Yolanda—unwillingly married to Sir Hugh des Arcis—is threatened by her husband’s desire for a son. As Sir Hugh sets off on a mission to claim the Occitain for France, she makes her own journey through the blizzard to find Raimon, a journey that could end in disaster. As the flames rise one last time, Raimon and Yolanda’s fates, like the fates of the Flame and the Occitan itself, hang by a smoky thread.

K. M. GRANT is the author of the Perfect Fire trilogy, the acclaimed de Granville trilogy, and How the Hangman Lost His Heart, based on her own ancestor, the last man in England to be hung, drawn, and quartered. She lives in Scotland and works as a writer and broadcaster.
