Stonehenge Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in England and more importantly there is nothing similar to it around the world. This altar stone has been used for 5000 years and still not entirely sure what his purpose. Stonehenge is a megalithic alignment of the Bronze Age. Stonehenge receives around 700,000 visitors a year.

Location It is located near Amesbury, in the county of Wiltshire, about 13 km north west of Salisbury, England.

History Stonehenge started as an early form of henge monument, built around 5,000 years ago, where prehistoric people buried their cremated dead. Later, the enormous sarsens and smaller bluestones were set up in the centre. This section outlines the complex prehistory of Stonehenge, and explores the later history of the changing monument.

Sgnificance Stonehenge is significant in many ways - it is a unique monument, an icon, an inspiration and part of an important prehistoric landscape. It is a rich source for finding out more about prehistory and holds a pivotal place in the development of archaeology.

Curiositys Stones to build Stonehenge were brought up to 400 km away. Some weigh 45 tons and is 5 feet tall. If one draws a line on the ground, passing in the middle of the circle formed by the rocks, you will see that this line indicates the position of sunrise summer. Until today there is no explanation of why these stones were brought from far away, and there are also stones of considerable size.
