People suffering from narcolepsy find it difficult to stay awake sometimes. They might feel excessively sleepy during the day. Regardless of the kind of activity they are involved in currently, they can still feel extremely sleepy. This can occur at any time of the day and the sleeping disorder narcolepsy can put a person in a very risky situation at times since the person might actually go to sleep without their knowledge. People with narcolepsy typically bypass many of the stages of sleep that normal people go through before entering deep sleep. They directly go to a deep sleep state, which is known as the REM stage also called the "Rapid Eye Movement" phase of sleep. A person with the sleeping disorder narcolepsy can enter into REM sleep as soon as they go to sleep or sometimes even when they are awake. This latter condition can obviously give rise to potentially dangerous situations. People suffering from this disorder might find it difficult to stay awake quite often during the daytime. Even though they might have had a good night's rest, they might still feel sleepy during the day. This is called "Excessive daytime sleepiness" or EDS for short. EDS is one of the predominant symptoms of the sleeping disorder narcolepsy. As people fall asleep, they might sometimes lose control of their muscles. This can also occur as they are coming out of sleep. This condition is known as cataplexy and is similar to sleep paralysis that most people experience during REM sleep. Some people suffering from narcolepsy also experience frightening hallucinations while going to sleep, known as hypnagogic hallucinations or when waking up, known as hypnopompic hallucinations. While most of these hallucinations are visual in nature, they can sometimes also involve other senses. EDS, cataplexy, sleep paralysis and hallucinations are some of the typical symptoms of the sleeping disorder narcolepsy. Peoplesuffering from any or all of these symptoms of narcolepsy need to seek medical help for getting the problem under control.
