The purpose of this article is to provide you with information on those four symptoms and how they can affect your everyday life. Narcolepsy can be mild or severe, but the symptoms remain basically the same. Extreme Daytime Sleepiness The first common symptom of narcolepsy is extreme daytime sleepiness. All people who suffer with narcolepsy suffer with this symptom, and it is the most obvious when diagnosing the condition. During the day people suffering from narcolepsy will have periods of sleepiness which can last up to thirty minutes. Strong emotions can trigger that sleepiness. Other symptoms of narcolepsy that are associated with daytime sleepiness include depression, mental cloudiness, memory problems, lack of focus and lack of energy. Loss of Muscle Tone While Awake The second of the four common symptoms of narcolepsy is known as cataplexy. This is where you lose muscle tone whilst you are awake. This muscle weakness can be limited to certain parts of your body or it can affect the whole body. When this happens, people can find it difficult to speak. This muscle weakness can also involve nodding of the head or weakness of the knees. People who experience cataplexy quite often drop things they might be holding. Strong emotions can also trigger this symptom of narcolepsy and it will usually last a couple of seconds up to a couple of minutes. Hallucinations The third major symptom of narcolepsy is hallucinations. People who suffer from narcolepsy tend to have vivid dreams when they are falling asleep or waking up. These vivid dreams can seem very real and people often think that they can hear and smell things in their dreams. Sleep Paralysis Sleep paralysis is the fourth common symptom of narcolepsy. People who suffer from this symptom often report not being able to move or speak while they are falling asleep or waking up. These people are fully conscious during the episode, which can last from a couple of seconds to a couple of minutes. If you suffer from sleep paralysis it can be very frightening. There are a few other symptoms of narcolepsy, but the above four are the most common major symptoms that you may experience. If you suffer from any of these symptoms it might be worth
