RULES

See WFTDA.com for complete rules

WANT AUTO G

RAPHS? Come down to after the last the track game.

A ROLLER DERBY FAN’S CHEAT SHEET The team with the most points after two 30-minute periods wins the game. Each period is made up of individual “jams” lasting no longer than two minutes.

HOW DO YOU SCORE POINTS? The skater with a star on her helmet is the jammer. Each team has one jammer on the track at a time. The jammer is the only skater who can score points by passing blockers on the opposing team. If jammers are not in bounds or if they make illegal contact with opposing skaters while passing, they do not score points.

WHO ARE THE BLOCKERS? There are up to four blockers from each team on the track at one time. Together, the eight blockers make a pack. Blockers play offense by assisting their jammer while at the same time playing defense and blocking the opposing jammer.

WHY ARE SKATERS SENT TO THE PENALTY BOX? Skaters are sent to the penalty box when they have committed a penalty. The penalty time starts once the skater sits in the seat, so it is essential that she get to the penalty box quickly once she is sent. The standard time in the box is 30 seconds, but skaters can serve additional time for accruing additional penalties.

WHAT ARE THE NO-NO’S IN BLOCKING? • No back blocking • No forearms, clothes-lining or elbows • No grabbing, holding, pulling or tripping • No intentional falling in front of an opposing skater • No fighting

WHAT’S THE LEAD JAMMER THING THE ANNOUNCER IS TALKING ABOUT? The lead jammer is the first jammer to pass through the pack legally. The lead jammer is the only person who can call off a jam prior to the full two minutes. She calls off the jam by repeatedly placing her hands on her hips. The lead jammer is identified by a jammer ref by pointing to her with “L” shaped arms while following beside her inside the track until her first scoring pass. Sometimes, there will be no lead jammer, and the jam will last the full two minutes.

WHY DOES ONE GIRL HAVE A STRIPE ON HER HELMET? The girl with the stripe is called the pivot. Each team has one pivot on the track at a time, and if a jammer passes her helmet cover with the star to the pivot, the pivot can become the jammer by putting the star cover on her helmet. She does not retain lead jammer status, but she is able to score points where her jammer left off for the remainder of the jam.

HOW DO YOU WIN THE GAME?

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED? The Omaha Rollergirls are always looking for great talent - on and off the track. Skater and Referee recruitment begins now with recruitment information sessions each month and our annual new recruit camp starting in July. Off-skate opportunities, such as VIPs and non-skating officials, are available throughout the year. Please contact the recruitment director at org.recruiter@gmail.com for more information. NON-SKATING OFFICIALS (NSO) - These individuals are officials who are off skates and manage the bouts with various duties: • Jam Timer: Responsible for starting the jam, ensuring that jams do not go longer than two minutes, and monitoring timeouts. • Scorekeepers: Watches the jammer referees and tracks points for the referees. • Scoreboard Operator: Manages the electronic display of the official period clock, jam clock, and score. • Penalty Wrangler: Temporarily records penalties as they watch and listen to referees then relay them to the penalty tracker. • Penalty Tracker: Documents both teams’ penalties to the official penalty record. • Penalty Box: Two to three NSO staff keep track of time for each skater infraction and may issue additional penalty time for infractions made while in the penalty box. ORG ARMY (VIPs) - These individuals assist with game production, such as merchandise and program sales, track set up, halftime entertainment, and more. REFEREES - Up to 7 positions are used to monitor the jammers and the pack: • Head Referee: The head referee is the only referee with the authority to expel a skater, manager or coach. They typically will be positioned inside the track as a pack referee. • Jammer Referees: Two referees are responsible for observing jammers, one per team. They watch for any penalties that are made by, or against, their jammer. They track and report points to the scorekeepers. • Pack Referees: The remaining referees observe the skaters from several angles, watching for penalties and pack formations.
