The MWR Marketing Department strives daily to ensure that we effectively communicate what products and services we have to offer to the Soldiers, Families, and Civilians of Fort Bliss and El Paso.

If you are reading this article then you are already familiar with one of our most popular methods of communication: the BlissNOW magazine. With 35,000 copies produced every three months, we aim to answer the question; “What is there to do at Fort Bliss?”

You can also take advantage of the map section and phone listing. These are extremely useful to the newest members of our Fort Bliss community. Each month, we also produce our calendar card which lists everything going on in MWR for that particular month. It’s a very handy product that can be put on the refrigerator and referenced whenever you are looking for something fun to do.

The most popular method of social media communication we currently use is Facebook. If you are not already one of our 15,000 friends, then you are a step behind because that’s the place to go for event and program flyers, El Paso community events, contests, live on-location photos and information, important updates like “Know Before You Go”, and much more.

BLISSFUL LIVING FROM THE DIRECTOR As the change of season approaches and the end of the year beckons, it is a great time to reflect on the past year and look forward to the future.

Your Family and MWR team has planned many great activities throughout this quarter. In this issue, we have highlighted the volunteer program which is vibrant and always looking to enhance the experience for Fort Bliss and the community. The Resilience program held at the Family Resilience Center is a wonderful way to boost your well-being and focus on the positive. The School Liaison, SKIESUnlimited and the Child and Youth Services teams are all in full support mode; while the staff in the Business division is ready to “lighten” your load with holiday events and catering opportunities.

The Family and MWR team are interactive and looking forward to YOUR participation in the fitness and recreation arena. Special events is geared up to beat last year’s successful Holiday Festival, Monster Bash, and of course the ever popular Haunted House.

As we celebrate the holiday season and honor our veterans, we are also appreciative of the military Families.

BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Don’t miss the 1st Annual Nathaniel A. LaCour Halloween Classic Basketball tournament presented by Team Bliss Sports, Fitness and Aquatics.

The five-on-five, doubleelimination tournament will take place Friday, October 2426 at Logan PFC on East Fort Bliss. Registration is under way and is open to all. Registration costs $200 for teams composed of all active-duty military assigned to Fort Bliss, and $250

for all other teams.

Beginning at 6:30 p.m., the parking lot will fill with dozens of creatively decorated cars for this All Hallows’ Eve version of tailgating where the trunkers have just as much fun as the treaters.

Make plans to stop by for this safe, enjoyable trickor-treat event! This year’s fun includes bounce houses, games, a haunted house, trickor-treating and more.

Show off your costume for a chance to win great prizes in our costume contest. The event is free and open to all.

MONSTER BASH

TOWER DAY

Celebrate Halloween with monstrous family fun at Monster Bash, the area’s biggest and best Halloween party. This year’s theme is Where the Wild Things Are. Monster Bash is set for 6-10 p.m. Friday, October 24 at the Trading Post. We’ve got haunted houses in three scare levels – barely scary, pretty scary and very scary. Admission to the barely scary house costs $1, and the pretty scary house charges $2 and admission to the very

scary house costs $3 per person.

There will be games, a DJ, dancing, and many other entertainment options available.

Food and beverage vendors will be on hand to tame your beastly hunger.

Monster Bash is so much fun, it’s scary! We’ll see you there… if you dare.

HARVEST FESTIVAL

Don’t be a scaredy cat, and come on out to the Milam Youth Activity Center’s (MYAC) 5th Annual Harvest Festival. The festivities begin at 3:00 p.m. and will run till 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 25. The Harvest Festival is intended to bring members of the community together to enjoy some spooky family fun. The festival is free and open to all military families but is designed for families with kids 11 and under. There will be a haunted house; face painting, games and cupcake decorating, all coordinated and run by MYAC students.

Do you have what it takes to conquer Tango Tower? You won’t know until you try, and Tower Day is the perfect time to give it a shot.

From 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday, October 11, enjoy unlimited use of Tango Tower for just $6 per person.

The Tango Tower is a 50-foot-tall, six-sided structure with over 20 different high elements, giving participants a multitude of choices. There are no age restrictions and reservations are not required. All needed equipment is provided.

a spooky good time at the Haunted Pumpkin Patch! From 5-9 p.m. Friday, October 24, head to Old Fort Bliss for Halloween fun. The pumpkin patch opens at 5 p.m. and the ghost stories begin at 6:30 p.m.

Pumpkins are available on a first-come, firstserved basis in exchange for donations to the museum. One pumpkin per child ages 3 and up. Children must be present to get a pumpkin.

Bring a lawn chair or blanket and cozy up by the fire pit, where there will be ghost stories for the kids. There will be face painting, food and beverages available for purchase and more.

Are you ready to give thanks? If so, then come on out to the Milam Youth Activity Center’s (MYAC) 4th Annual Giving-Thanks Feast. The feast will be held on Wednesday, November 26 from 2-4 p.m. This event is free and is open to military families with kids 11 and under. This event is run completely by MYAC students who are in charge of preparing all of the food from scratch, as well as decorating and serving the delicious meal. If you are interested in attending this turkey-tastic event, please make your reservations with the MYAC by November 21.

POST WIDE YARD SALE

Do you need to reduce weight before your upcoming PCS move or maybe you just need to clear out some clutter? Take advantage of the Fort Bliss semi-annual post-wide yard sale Saturday, November 22 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in all on-post housing areas.

The yard sale gives patrons living on post the option of selling personally owned items from their living 12 | FALL 2014

quarters. Its a great time to score some extra cash and land some amazing bargains.

Only DoD cardholders are allowed to sell at the yard sale. The event is free and open to the public. Civilians should be prepared to show state issued ID for all persons 18+.

5K TURKEY TROT Choose your challenge at the Fort Bliss 5K Turkey Trot or Half Marathon. The 5K Turkey Trot begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 15 and is a family-oriented event. Rather than medals for the 5K event, runners who place first in their age group receive a frozen turkey. The Half Marathon is set to begin at 7:30 a.m. and is aimed at more advanced runners.

T-shirts guaranteed to all pre-registered participants. Participants can register at Soto Physical Fitness Center on 20751 Constitution Road before 7 pm on November 15. Late registration will be held from 5:30am - 8:00am the day of the race.

THANKSGIVING BRUNCH On Sunday, November 23, get together with family and friends at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center and feast on delectable creations at Thanksgiving Brunch.

The Centennial’s culinary team has created an extravagant buffet spread of seasonal culinary delights including rotisserie turkey with all of the trimmings, a carving station, and an array of traditional side dishes. Guests will also enjoy an omelet bar in addition to a wide variety of other traditional breakfast favorites.

You can also enjoy complimentary wine, champagne and mimosas with brunch. The cost for the buffet is $20.95 for adults and $10.50 for ages 5-10. Children ages 4 and under dine free. Reservations may be made from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Seating is limited.

POLAR PLUNGE Can you take the cold? Find out during the second annual Polar Bear Plunge Saturday, December 6 at Soldier Activity Center Pool.

The swim will take place from 1 to 3 p.m.

HOLIDAY 8K Get ready to go dashing through the snow – or, at least, down the road – during the 8k Holiday Run Saturday, December 6 at Soto Physical Fitness Center.

The run begins at 8 a.m. The 8k Holiday Run is open to all, including the El Paso community.

Early registration is free for active-duty military and $20 for all others. Early registration is under way at Soto PFC, Stout PFC and online at www.active. com. Early registration closes December 5. The first 100 registered runners will receive a Tshirt.

Late registration costs an additional $10 for all runners, and will be held on-site from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. December 6. Packet pickup will take place during this time, as well.

CELEBRATING MILITARY FAMILIES November Is National Military Family Appreciation Month November is a significant month in the military community. For starters, Veterans Day observances are sacred rites of homage for our veterans. We look forward to these times when we can express respect and gratitude towards those who went before us. We know all too well the price that previous generations have paid to defend our freedom.

Additionally, November has been declared National military Family Appreciation Month (NMFAM) as a time to reflect on the enormous contributions military families have made on behalf of all of us. The sacrifice and duty involved in service to our nation often goes unnoticed. For many, deployment banners and welcome home signs are the only visible reminders to the public of the strength and quiet sacrifice of military families.

The strength of our Soldiers comes from the strength of their Families. military Families are the vital connection between Soldiers and the military’s ability to remain strong.

With thousands of Soldiers deployed during this era of persistent conflict, recognizing the daily sacrifices made by military Families has never been more important.

NMFAM provides an opportunity to honor the commitment, sacrifice and dedication of our Military and their Families. In observance of this occasion, we held a cover photo contest.

Patrons were asked to submit a family photo along with a description of their life as a military Family. The Garcia Family, picture above, are our cover contest winners.

Candice Boston, Family and MWR Marketing The Garcia Family’s journey began twelve years ago when Elizabeth and RJ met on a blind date in Dallas, Texas while he was stationed at Fort Hood.

The couple married in 2003. As an Aviation Officer, RJ’s military career took the newlyweds to Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Georgia in the wake of September 11.

In their first year of marriage, they took the ultimate test of relationship endurance and survived buying their first home. As their lives changed, so did the world. The invasion of Iraq was followed by the first of three deployments. Then Elizabeth gave birth to their first child, a son named Grant.

Shortly after returning home, they received orders to Fort Belvoir in Alexandria, Virginia where their second child, Ella, was born.

“It was baptism by fire for me as a first time military spouse and FRG Leader,” says Elizabeth, “but ultimately, we learned so much about each other and the wonderful Soldiers and Army Families among us.”

From there, their military adventure would

take the Garcia Family to Fort Rucker, Alabama, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, back to Fort Hood, Texas, The United States Military Academy at West Point, and lastly, Fort Bliss, Texas where they reside today.

“Each duty station has something great to offer, but you will never find it if you don’t get out there,” said Elizabeth as she elaborated on how they turn four-day weekends into mini vacations. “We go camping, hiking, and exploring every place we would have never known had the military not introduced us to that corner of the world.”

While there are many challenges to being a military family, it possesses immeasurable rewards, amazing opportunities and a chance to see the world. The Garcia Family is proof that your journey can be as gratifying as you make it.

Hi everybody, my name is Milo and I am the new Family and MWR Marketing Mascot!

I am an energetic and playful 2 year old brown and white Jack Russell Terrier. My favorite things to do are to fetch tennis balls and go on long walks. But, my most favorite thing to do is to dress up in fun costumes; especially if my friends at the Family and MWR Marketing Department are going to put me in new issues of the blissNow magazine. So far, I have dressed up as a waiter, a beach going pup, and a cowboy, but I think my favorite costume was when I got to strap on my lederhosen and wear my authentic German clothes.

I think it would be fun since this is my first time meeting you guys to have a little contest.

I am going to be hiding somewhere in this issue of the magazine and it’s your job to find me! After the Treaty of Versailles ended the war, it was November 11 that became Armistice Day. The name was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 to honor the service of all veterans.

Every Veterans Day, our nation pays tribute to those who have defended America through military service. A TRUE TEST OF TIME Candice Boston, Family and MWR Marketing Rosalio Rosales, better known as Rosie, “just loves to work,” says Desert Strike Zone’s manager Don Aguilar of the 64-year-old employee.

Rosales retired from Family and MWR in 2011 after working 40 years in a range of positions since his first job at the age of 21 for the Officer’s Club in 1972. Two years later, Rosales moved over to the Community Lanes, the bowling center located next to the PX. Since, he has thrived in times of limited funding driven by his passion for bowling. After Community Lanes, he went on to Center Lanes, next was Logan, then Beaumont to Biggs and finally Desert Strike Lanes.

Only 15 days after retirement Rosales returned to work as a flex employee. “I love my job,” says Rosales, “and I will stay as long as Don is here.”

Rosales recently witnessed the transition of pinspotters on lanes 1-20 from AMF 82-70 XL to AMF 82-90 XLi Edge, the most technologically advanced pinspotters on the market.

“It was a bitter sweet moment for Rosie,” said Aguilar. “He has been the only constant; he has been here through six facilities, five managers, remodels, upgrades and now we are replacing the machinces that he learned on. They were like his kids.”

Next year, the bowling center plans to complete the upgrade and transition the remaining pinspotters on lanes 21-52. The new pinspotters offer less maintenance and pin wear, greater energy savings, and increased

frames per stop which will save the facility overhead costs. “Though we will require less staff with the new upgrade, Rosie’s dedication, commitment, and continual striving to improve has earned himself an honorary place on my staff.”

Candice Boston, Family and MWR Marketing Talk about a one-eighty, Dallas Cooke’s golf career would take him from East Georgia to the desert mountains of far west Texas Originally from Williamsburg, Virginia, Cooke’s passion for golf began early in life after being introduced to the game by his father at the age of 8.

Cooke began his golf career as a cart attendant at Ford’s Colony Country Club in his hometown of Williamsburg.

He graduated from Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina in 2003.

During this time, he landed a position at the Golden Horseshoe in Williamsburg as the Assistant Golf Professional. The opportunity allowed him to explore his interest in coaching while experiencing firsthand the challenges of running a golf business.

After college, Cooke’s knowledge of golf, as both player and coach, coupled with his enthusiasm for the game was motivation enough to pursue a professional career. He landed his first job at West Lake Country Club in Augusta, Georgia after he became certified by the Professional Golf Association (PGA). Cooke joined the Family and MWR team four and a half years ago when an opportunity at Fort Gordon became available as the

Assistant Manager at Gordon Lakes Golf Club.

Cooke recognizes that the need for new work experiences will set him on a successful path in the golf industry.

When Bobby Kaewar decided to retire after 42 years at Underwood Golf Complex, Cooke was selected from a pool of highly qualified candidates to be Bobby’s successor. “I am amazed at the sheer size of Fort Bliss,” says Cooke, “but I am very impressed how the MWR program operates here at Fort Bliss and I am glad to be part of the team.”

Although, little to no humidity, very few trees and even less shade will take a little getting used to coming from the East Coast, Cooke has big plans for the future at Underwood Golf Complex. He wants to provide more programs that encourage a love for the game of golf to all ages. His goal is to provide the best military golf course for our Soldiers, their Families, members and guests, hosting a Web.com PGA Tour event and creating entertainment activities for the Golden Tee Restaurant located inside the club house. “Ultimately, I want to create a positive working environment for my staff,” says Cooke, “because if they enjoy working here, I know the customers will be well taken care of.”

Aside from golf, Cooke’s hobbies

include baseball, football and spending time at the beach with his wife Kelly and daughter Elle, 2. (He shouldn’t be too disappointed with the amount of sand in the area, but the water is another story.)

KNOW BEFORE YOU THROW Candice Boston, Family and MWR Marketing The Fort Bliss Recycling Program has received national recognition in recent years for its successful implementation of Single Stream Recycling.

Fort Bliss was the first U.S. Army installation to make the transition in an effort to raise existing recycling numbers and address the increase in recycling anticipated as a result of population growth. The increase in materials collected happened almost immediately. “Our efforts are paying off, but there is much more work to be done as far as educating the community,” stated Terri Smythe, Fort Bliss Contract Recycling Project Manager.

Education is the key to a successful recycling program in any community.

Smythe said, “the more you can educate, the higher the participation you will have, the less contaminants you’ll find in the collected materials, the fewer complaints you’ll receive, and the more efficient your program will be in the long run.” Fort Bliss has a Department of Defense mandate to divert half of the generated waste from the landfill. In other words, half of what most consider garbage must be recycled.

Below, we have listed a few tips from the Fort Bliss Recycling Programs on the basics to know the next time you throw something away.

Nearly everything we do leaves behind some kind of waste. Households create ordinary garbage, while industrial and manufacturing processes create solid and hazardous wastes.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans generate approximately 251 million tons of trash per year; that’s 4.6 lbs per person each day. Currently, in the United States, 34 percent is recovered and recycled or composted, about 12 percent is burned at combustion facilities, and the remaining 54.3 percent is disposed of in landfills.

Recycling is one of the easiest and most traditional ways to have a positive impact on your environmenta and community. The simple act of tossing a can into a recycling bin rather than a trashcan not only diverts needless trash from entering landfills, but also decreases the need to extract and process raw materials from the earth. In this way, recycling saves natural resources and energy, thus helping the economy by reducing production and energy expenses.

We finish a bottle of water or reading the newspaper and with the flick of our wrist, it goes in the trash. The problem is, we’re not just throwing away a product, we’re throwing away a valuable resource.

We’re throwing away a future product, a future job, and future revenue — an opportunity to make a difference here on Fort Bliss.

At first glance, the tons of valuable resources processed at recycling facilities may look like ordinary garbage, but the Fort Bliss Recycling Program has made the cliche “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” a reality. Revenue generated by the Fort Bliss Recycling Program helps fund the installations quality-of-life initiative. To date, an excess of $1million has funded many Family and MWR proj-

ects. To name a few, a portable stage, the Recycling Railroad, the spin bikes found at Stout Physical Fitness Center, a skate park, resurfaced playgrounds, the outdoor exercise equipment at Biggs Park, and much more are all the result of recycling revenue.

Recycling is easy. Some feel that it is inconvenient because there are guidelines to follow. “We adopted Single Stream Recycling to reduce hassle,” said Lilia Lenhart, DPW-ED Recycling Program Manager, “but we must have some guidelines to avoid contamination of the entire haul.”

Blue recycling containers have been placed directly next to trash cans so people have a 50/50 chance of getting it right.

of its pollution prevention efforts, including: collection days for used electronics; document-shredding days; a permanent household hazardous waste collection site; and Reuse Roundups for Soldiers graduating from USASMA to donate items to junior-enlisted families.

VENTURE OUTDOORS Meredith McLean, Family and MWR Marketing As the weather gets cooler, there is no better time than now to take an adventure in the southwest desert with Outdoor Recreation!

This fall Outdoor Recreation has many new programs slated for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels. “We have something for everyone this fall” says Albert Alvarez, Outdoor Recreation Specialist. “This fall we have climbing, biking, an outdoor film viewing, winter sports, ping pong, and much more.”

How is the view from 30 feet up in the air? Find out during the monthly Challenge Course Night, a new addition to the Outdoor Recreation calendar this quarter. For the first time ever, patrons 18 and older will have the opportunity to test their limits as they traverse the challenge course suspended high up in the air above the basketball court in the Soldier Activity Center.

The first Challenge Course Night will take place on October 31 during Halloween Activity Night. Along with the challenge course, Halloween Activity Night participants can enjoy a ping pong tournament, slackline activities, and rock climbing on the indoor rock wall.

For patrons under 18 looking for some high altitude adventure, stop by the Soldier Activity Center during the once a month Family Day on the Wall.

Guests ages 6 and older can climb the rock wall in the Soldier Activity Center as long as they are at least 35lbs and can correctly fit into the harness. Family Day on the Wall is free for activeduty participants and $3 for all others.

Another new event to hit the calendar this fall is Tour de Cruces. Participants will go on a hike around Old Mesilla and learn about the history of the region. “This is a great way to learn about the culture and history of our sister city to the north” says Alva34 | FALL 2014

rez. As a part of the tour, participants will stop at historical sites and the farmer’s market.

If fall colors are more of your thing, come out to Fall Colors Adventure on November 1. The group will head out to Mckittrick Canyon for scenic hiking, photography, and a picnic. The trip costs $15 and will include transportation, guide services, and trail snacks.

Winter sports enthusiasts have two opportunities to catch fresh powder with Outdoor Recreation this quarter.

The group will hit the slopes during the Turkey and Slopes event from November 28-30. Participants can choose from snowboarding, skiing, and snowshoeing. Outdoor Recreation will also head back to the slopes during their Winter Sports event on December 27th at Ski Apachi. Participants of this event will also have the choice of snowboarding, skiing, and showshoeing, weather permiting.

FIT FUN Meredith McLean, Family and MWR Marketing Go the distance this fall with Fort Bliss Sports, Fitness, and Aquatics as they round out another successful year of teamwork and exercise.

The fall quarter marks the final stretch in the annual Commander’s Cup competition. This is a year-long competition for active-duty teams to compete in twentyone different sporting events to win bragging rights for their commander. “There are only three events left this fall to secure your team’s bragging rights” says Todd Smith, Varsity and Intramural Coordinator “The commander’s cup series is about more than just bragging rights though. It’s also about unit comradery, which is really important in the military profession.” The upcoming Commander’s Cup events include the 2 Mile Train-

ing PT Run on October 3, Trap and Skeet on October 20-21, and the Swim Meet on November 4-6.

Festive holiday runs are also dominating the calendar this fall. The 5K Turkey Trot will take place on November 15.

“The Turkey Trot is a great way for families to stay active together” says Holly Imbriaco, Group Fitness Director. “We encourage runners of all ages and ability levels to come out and give it their best shot.” Winners of each age group will win a turkey. The age groups are 12 and under, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50 and over. If winter fun is more your speed, come out December 6 for the 8K Holiday Run. After the race join us for a cup of hot chocolate at the finish line.

THE SINGLE SOLDIER Meredith McLean, Family and MWR Marketing Soldiers from the Fort Bliss Chapter of Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) are giving back to the community in a big way. In October alone, they are scheduled to volunteer at 27 events. They volunteer at a wide variety of events on Fort Bliss and in El Paso. “It’s important to give back to the community” says, SGT Matthew Stokes, BOSS President. “As Soldiers at Fort Bliss we are lucky to be a part of the community on Post as well as a great community outside our gates. It is important for us to give back to both.” Volunteering with BOSS is not only a great way to give back to the community, but also a great way to earn promotion points. All volunteer hours earned with BOSS can be tracked on VMIS. This quarter they will be volunteering in El Paso at La Vina Wine Festival, many UTEP sporting events, and Making Strides. They are volunteering on Post at the MWR Monster Bash, the MWR Massacre on Marshall Road Haunted House, the MWR Holiday Fest, Operation Home Front Toy Drive, and Operation Home Front Meals for Military. They also volunteer every Tuesday at Huckleberry Hounds and every Thursday at Operation Santa Claus.

“We are always happy to welcome new volunteers” says, SPC Mairim Martinezfeliu. “We volunteer at so many events each month and can always use more help.” Volunteer opportunities with BOSS are open to single Soldiers, Soldiers who are dual-military, and Soldiers who are geographical bachelors or bachelorettes. Meredith McLean, Family and MWR Marketing Whether you are a novice to the sport or an ambidextrous champ, you are invited to come out to Stout Physical Fitness Center to enjoy a game or two of handball. Enter Stout PFC any Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 9am and 1pm and you will be impressed by the athleticism of the handball group that dominates the court these days. “Handball is a great sport for anyone who wants to keep fit” says Alex Diaz, handball player.

“We encourage anyone who wants to play to come out. If they don’t know how to play, we would love to teach them.”

This handball group arranges singles and doubles games and tries to match players based on ability levels. They have everybody from novices to champions in their midst and love to introduce newcomers to their beloved game. “I learned to play handball in the Army” Says Ron Murphy, handball player.

Handball Tournament and won. I have been playing the game for over 45 years and love to help others get into the game.”

Handball is a fairly inexpensive sport. All you need in order to play are gloves, goggles, and a ball. It combines some of the principles of tennis into a game that is played by hitting a small rubber ball with hands rather than a racquet. The ball can bounce off of the wall and can be played with either two players or four. “It’s a fast paced game where a fast reaction time is key to winning” says Manny Velasco, racquetball player.

If you are interested in learning a new game, come out to Stout PFC Monday, Wednesday, or Friday around 9am. The sports that are available and in need of coaches are, Spring and Fall Soccer, Tennis, TeeBall, Baseball, Softball, Flag Football, Girls Volleyball, USA Track and Field, Tackle Football, Summer and Winter Basketball, Cross Country, and Wrestling.

The process to become a volunteer coach includes a background check, which usually takes a couple weeks to process, along with filling out a volunteer packet. Completed and approved volunteer packets last up to 5 years and will move with you to different military installations.

Now, who can be a volunteer coach? Anyone can! Whether you are an active-duty Soldier or the spouse of an active-duty Soldier, everyone is invited to show off their skills and dedicate their time.

There are also some pretty enticing incentives to becoming a volunteer coach. For example, children of those 40 | FALL 2014

volunteering as head coaches get to play in that particular sport free of charge. Assistant Coaches get a similar incentive. Their first child plays in that sport for free and each additional child plays for half price. Being a volunteer coach also allows you to log your hours and use that time towards gaining promotion points, or better yet, you may even have a shot at earning the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.

However, it’s not all about the incentives and the professional rewards, according to Laura Gillette, the Administrative Assistant for the Youth Sports program. “Being a volunteer coach is rewarding in and of itself. You are pushing and encouraging the children to succeed in that sport but you also have the power and the influence to make a difference in their everyday life, as well”, said Gillette.

CHILD CARE AVAILABLE Ann Ogle, Director of Replica CDC Child, Youth and School Services has a variety of options for children on Saturdays. From hourly child care for young children to special events for teens, military families have a variety of opportunities to keep their kids busy on this day.

Most weekends - except those in conjunction with a Federal Holiday there is hourly care available for children between the ages of six weeks thru Kindergarten in the Logan Child Development Center (CDC) OR the Milam CDC. The care rotates between the two centers to offer convenience for families in different areas of the installation and El Paso. Logan CDC is open on the odd numbered Saturdays and Milam CDC is open on even numbered Saturdays.

same types of developmental programming as care during the week including art, math and manipulatives, language, and outdoor play. An afternoon snack, dinner, and an evening snack are served at no additional expense. Care is available between 1 p.m. and 11 p.m. and costs $4.00 per hour per child.

Children who attend first to fifth grade are provided care at Logan School Age Center (SAC) and Milam SAC on the same weekends the CDC’s are open. The school age child also has opportunities like use of game rooms, reading and homework areas, and appropriate playgrounds. Meals and snacks are provided.

The SAC is open between 3 p.m. and approximately 10 p.m. depending on the numbers of children. However, children can be dropped off as early as 1 p.m. and stay as late as 11 p.m. During those hours

the children will be cared for in the CDC next door and walked back and forth to the SAC. The cost is $4.00 per hour per child.

The Milam Youth Activity Center (YAC) located on East Bliss and the Youth Plex located on West Bliss offer open recreation and special “camps” or events on Saturdays, too.

TUTORING AND ACADEMICS Sarrah Morgan, Family and MWR Marketing Think that SKIESUnlimited is just a place to do gymnastics or taekwondo? Well think again! SKIESUnlimited has a lot more to offer than just extracurricular activities. If you need help with homework, or could benefit from extra tutoring, or maybe you would just like to improve your writing and spelling skills, SKIESUnlimited is the place for you.

There have been a few new additions to the SKIESUnlimited School of Academics, and all of the new additions have to do with improving your child’s writing skills. The newest addition is a class called, Drawing and Writing. This class focuses on penmanship through drawing. Students will learn the five rules for forming a sentence as well as how to structure a sentence. This is a fun and interactive class that uses games to encourage learning. This class is available to students who are between 2-6th grade and between the ages of 7-11. The cost for this class is $40 per month.

The next class is called Writing and Spelling, this class is designed for the bright but struggling learners. It focuses on teaching students both spelling and writing techniques which will encourage students to enjoy writing. It also addresses the “flipping” problem that many students have, for example flipping b’s and d’s. Students will also practice note-taking and

writing short paragraphs. This class is available for students between the ages of 7-9 and in 2-4th grades. The cost for this class is $40 per month.

The last addition is a class titled, Basic Writing: (IEW). This class takes the mystery out of writing by implementing the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) method. The Basic Writing class consists of teaching framework, structure and style using checklists and word lists to quickly teach students the foundational principles of writing. Students will take away from the class the knowledge on how to take notes and summarize from notes, as well as techniques for dressing up essays.

This class is available to students between the ages of 8-18.

The cost for this class is $120 per month.

According to the class instructor Michelle Fryc, who has been an IEW certified instructor for 12 years, the reason why these programs are so important is because 79% of all twelfth graders perform below proficiency levels, and only 3% are at an advanced writing level (Nations Report Card, 2011). She believes strongly in these programs and has implemented them within her own family. At 19, her oldest son published his first book. Fryc states, “I had a light bulb moment when I realized that learning how to write, and learning proper writing techniques would help students succeed in all aspects of life”.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS Debbie Trexler, Director School Liaison Office As we prepare our children to go back to school we reflect upon what strategies, programs, and support they need to be academically, socially, physically, and emotionally successful in the upcoming year. We check and double check school supply lists, ensure emergency notification cards are up to date, properly secure bus passes, talk to our high school students about college visits, and seek resources to help prepare them. We establish routines, designate homework space, discuss school and home safety, ensure appropriate safeguards are installed on electronic devices, and then ready ourselves as we send our children into the guiding hands of trusted educators.

Part of your support system is your School Liaison Office (SLO). Located in the Welcome Center, building 505 Pershing Road, your School Liaison team can coordinate and assist school aged children of military parents with educational opportunities and information necessary

They network, educate, and work in partnership with local schools to ensure student success and campus awareness of the unique opportunities and challenges associated with being a military child.

Sarrah Morgan, Family and MWR Marketing Most of you may think that teenagers on Fort Bliss only care about hanging out with friends, playing video games or lounging around the house. Well think again. This article is going to show you that this isn’t the case for a group of hard working and dedicated teens at the Milam Youth Activity Center (MYAC).

It all started when the teens involved in the Critter Care Summer Camp decided to ask for donations that they could take to the Animal Rescue League Shelter in Canutillo, TX. The students asked for towels, newspaper, food, and toys. The shelter was so impressed by the teen’s actions that they asked them back to help with daily duties.

The teens were so excited to go back that they decided to designate one Saturday a month to the shelter. On that Saturday, the teens catch a bus from the MYAC and spend the afternoon bathing, walking, and feeding the dogs and cats, as well as putting up tarps, cleaning cages, and training and socializing the animals. According to Mateo Flores, he volunteered his time to the shelter to “gain experience in helping the animals”. Shawn Swoffer also said, “I wanted to help out because there are a lot more animals than people, plus the kids here at the MYAC are pretty awesome”.

According to Susan Goss, MYAC Director, “my kids aren’t there to party and have fun; they are there to help the innocent.”

That statement is a reflection of how many of the students who donate their time to the shelter feel. Charles Hindbaugh a MYAC teen said, “my mom raised me to give back to my community, volunteering comes naturally to me, plus it feels good knowing that you are helping these animals because they don’t have the ability to help themselves”.

It is actions such as these that really show the character of the teens that are living within the Fort Bliss community. They give up their time without hesitation to support a cause they believe in. It is not only heartwarming, but it gives them a sense of pride.

“The MYAC has a lot of opportunities, we volunteer our time for a good cause, we don’t mind giving up our Saturday’s because we have fun while doing it,” says Raymond Flores, MYAC student volunteer.

Tracy Broomfield, Army Community Service Learn to Bounce not Crack, by taking Army Community Service Resilience Training, held at the Family Resilience Center (FRC). During this course participants learn about resilience and the competencies that contribute to it.

The class is very interactive and eye-opening. Over four days, participants learn deliberate breathing techniques, energy management, how to effectively set goals and focus on the task at hand.

In addition, they will discuss Self-Awareness, and Self-Regulation, why we have certain reactions to activating events and how can we regulate those reactions.

This class also looks at Mental Agility and being able to look at things from different perspectives, and give us effective tools to solve problems. Participants will learn about Strengths of Character and how to use our Signature Character Strengths to make

us more effective leaders by leveraging strengths in others.

We focus a lot on optimism and being able to “Hunt the Good Stuff”; participants will learn that just because you’re down doesn’t mean you have to stay down. Finally we discuss connection, learning to build stronger connections with those we are close to weather that’s at home or in our professional lives.
