LACK OF RESPECT COST HEIKKI DRIVING SEAT. F1 PORTAL

JAN 13, 2013

After three seasons with the backmarker outfit, Kovalainen, who previously raced for McLaren and Renault, has been left without a seat for this year’s Championship. The Finn recently admitted his “surprise” at failing to land a drive, saying he thought “after last season and the last couple of years I thought I’d be in a better position on the market.” And although Caterham still have one place open for this season and could theoretically retain Kovalainen, Gascoyne has ruled the 31-year-old out of the running. “It is actually a great shame,” the Caterham Group technical officer stated. “Heikki is a very talented driver, but last year his management did not handle him very well and he has not done himself any favours. “It is a tough environment out there for everyone. He has had three years with Caterham, was paid well, and he should have shown more respect about that.” As for the one driver Caterham have signed for this season, Charles Pic, Gascoyne admits finances did play a role. “Charles is a young guy,” he said. “He has some financial backing and he has done a decent job against a more experienced teammate, Timo Glock.

“HE HAS HAD THREE YEARS WITH CATERHAM, WAS PAID WELL, AND HE SHOULD HAVE SHOWN MORE RESPECT ABOUT THAT” However Caterham boss Cyril Abiteboul says he is interested in retaining the services of Heikki Kovalainen in a different role. The Finnish driver and team-mate Vitaly Petrov were dropped at the end of 2012 to make way for a new line-up of Charles Pic and Giedo van der Garde. The Frenchman says discussions with Kovalainen are ongoing, with an eye to adding some experience to their in-experienced line-up.

CATERHAM EXIT ^ Former Caterham driver Heikki Kovalainen who has been left out with a seat this season.

“Heikki is not one of our two race drivers; we continue to have discussions with Heikki to see if a different project could be possible,” the 35-year-old told Sky Sports. “Let’s be honest, we’d be keen to keep experience in our line-up. That’s something we’d both be interested in under the right conditions. I would not undermine the importance of experience in general in F1.” “Of course he [Kovalainen] wasn’t happy with the progress. No-one was happy – the shareholders are not happy with the progress. So it’s about making sure we do better than that.”

F1 PORTAL SAUBER C32 ANALYSIS

SAUBER C32 F1 PORTAL

FEB 4, 2013

Sauber’s plan for 2013 was pretty simple when it come to the question of the C32. We review Sauber’s progress leading towards March 2013. Sauber in F1 has launched the most radical of this season’s Formula One cars to date, its C32 getting a partly stepped nose, also the narrow sidepods and a wasp-waisted rear end. Lotus F1’s technical director said he was going to assume that other teams to stick with the stepped nose, but everyone else so far has opted for the vanity panel; only Sauber has even come close to keeping the step, with the step being visible from the front but the profile view being a constant smooth line to the cockpit.

JEREZ TEST ^ F1 Sauber driver Esteban Gutiérrez tests the car in Jerez testing by our photographer.

SAUBER ROOKIE v Esteban Gutierrez believes partnering Nico Hulkenberg in 2013 will be massively beneficial.

The car is clearly a brand new design, but continuing with the previous success of their 2012 car, the launch so far not all the key design elements are clear on the Sauber C32, but we have a good indication what to look forward to in the upcoming season this year. The front wing of the Sauber is clearly a placeholder previously carried over from the C31 design as the clear change in the sidepod character further down the car the chain of command will need to be altered modified, so we expect a revised verison at the testing stages leading towards the 2013 season. Esteban Gutiérrez was behind the wheel of the Sauber C32-Ferrari for the first time during Jerez testing. He immediately felt comfortable in the car and was able to complete a comprehensive programme over 110 laps, which included the aerodynamic measurements, tyre and the brake material testing and several long runs with high fuel loads, Sauber experinced this test with no technical problem.

The launch car was releaved with a Semi-Coanda exhaust much like the team raced throughout the central portion of 2012 with their team returning to the ramp exhaust late on in the season having run it early on. Just like the other launches thus far i’d expect to see some revisions in this area during testing and the early part of the season to further enhance downforce.

Monisha Kaltenborn has become the new team principal of Sauber, with its former chief Peter Sauber electing to step back from his day-to-day running of the outfit. Sauber has always made it clear that he did not want to be running the team when he turned 70 next year.

“ THE TRICK WILL BE TO UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH OF YOUR RESOURCES - IN TERMS OF BOTH MANPOWER AND FUNDING - YOU PUT INTO EACH CAR, AND WHEN TO DO IT.” Kaltenborn becomes the new team principal with immediate effect, and Sauber will continue in his role as president of the Sauber Group’s board of directors.

Speaking about the change, Sauber said: “We decided a long time ago that Monisha would take over from me, but we left the timing open. “Now is a good time for both of us, so this is the right moment to pass on the baton.” The FREE online F1 Magazine | PORTAL

FEB 11, 2013

Lewis Hamilton says his time at new employers Mercedes has been thoroughly enjoyable so far, dispelling suggestions that he is regretting his move from rivals McLaren. The 2008 World Champion, who has signed a three-year deal with the Silver Arrows, is relishing the experience of working in a completely new environment.

MERCEDES DRIVER Hamilton believes that moving to F1 team Mercedes will create new challenges for him

“So far I am loving it here,” Hamilton explained to the official Formula 1 website. “The team is great. Everybody is so welcoming and it feels fantastic to work with a new group of people. I honestly feel that this could be a place for me to grow something new.” Hamilton, who drove the team’s new F1 W04 chassis for the first time at the opening Jerez pre-season test last week, added that the wide range of comments over his move, made by former Grand Prix drivers and those currently involved in the sport, do not affect him “No, that didn’t surprise me,” Hamilton replied when asked if the flurry of remarks came as a surprise. “That’s how people are. Whenever there is something coming up some people feel the right to make their comments. That doesn’t really bother me.” Hamilton will be back in action at the Circuit de Catalunya later this month, with the second pre-season test of the year taking place at the venue from 19-22 February. 12

Forget the big three – Christian Horner has admitted teams other than Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari made the “strongest impression” on him at Jerez testing. “Lotus and Sauber left the strongest impression,” the Red Bull chief said, according to Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport. “All the others are still difficult to assess,” added Horner. The German magazine’s correspondent Michael Schmidt said the new grey Sauber had Nico Hulkenberg “smiling” all week as the opening test at Jerez unfolded. “A good example is Sergio. He has been

part of the Escuderia Telmex, which is a racing school. They have been supporting him from the very beginning and it is natural that when he enters the pinnacle of motorsports, they come along. You have so many top drivers out there who have also brought along their partners who have supported them right from the beginning.

Swiss newspaper Blick’s veteran correspondent Roger Benoit, meanwhile, quoted Hulkenberg as confiding to his Sauber colleagues: “Guys, this car goes like the devil.” As for Lotus, both Romain Grosjean and Kimi Raikkonen each tasted the top of the timesheets during the four-day test. “We are quite surprised,” admitted the always-grinning Frenchman Grosjean, according to RMC. “I think everybody saw my smile.”

F1 DRIVER COSTS. F1 PORTAL

FEB 12, 2013

The Sauber team boss Monisha Kaltenborn has urged F1 to react to the global economic climate and find a way to bring down costs. Over the off-season, experienced figures like Heikki Kovalainen and Timo Glock have lost their drives in F1 with Caterham and Marussia forced to look for drivers wit budget – continuing a trend that has seen smaller teams on the grid left with no option but to find pay drivers in order to compete. Sauber is a team known for bringing through young talent in the past but, when quizzed on whether it would be possible to teams to sign young drivers in future if they didn’t bring money, Kaltenborn said things would have to change if rival teams were to be able to adopt a similar approach. “All these discussions about ‘pay drivers’ have lost ground a bit for 14

me,” she told the official F1 website. “What we see is that many partners or sponsors support drivers from the very beginning. “A good example is Sergio. He has been part of the Escuderia Telmex, which is a racing school. They have been supporting him from the very beginning and it is natural that when he enters the pinnacle of motorsports, they come along. You have so many top drivers out there who have also brought along their partners who have supported them right from the beginning. “You don’t talk about pay drivers in lower series because it is normal that a driver has partners that support him.

So why not use the same standard in Formula One? Then you wouldn’t have all these pay driver discussions. Sure, it would be good for Formula One to look more closely at the costs. We have to do something. Over the years we see that the economic climate is also getting to us. And not just to the smaller teams, but the whole sport. “There has always been fluctuation on the grid and nobody was harping on about pay drivers. Everybody who comes into Formula One is on a high level and if there are only a limited number of seats, then of course every team is looking for the best option. Who wouldn’t?”

AUSTRALlA GOES SUPERSOFT: PIRELLI REVEALS TYRE CHOICES. F1 PORTAL

FEB 13, 2013

Pirelli has revealed its choice of compounds for the first four races of the 2013 F1 world championship campaign in Australia, Malaysia, China and Bahrain. With an eye to encouraging strategic thinking from the eleven teams taking part this season, the tyre company has announced that it will take its supersoft compound to Melbourne for the first time since its return to the top flight in 2010. The red-marked rubber will be complemented by the white medium tyre, ensuring that there is a two-step difference in compound. By contrast, Pirelli has revealed that it will take the two hardest compounds in its five-strong range to round of the season in Malaysia. The orangecoloured hard tyre will partner the medium at Sepang as the sole supplier caters for the high temperatures and abrasive surface characteristic of the circuit. The medium remains on the menu for China, where it will be joined by the soft compound. Pirelli believes this is the best choice for the comparatively high degradation expected as a result of the demanding Shanghai International track layout, and hopes that the selection will to some close racing. Like Australia, the annual trip to Bahrain will see a brand new nomination for this season, with the hard and soft compounds working in tandem to ensure plenty of speed in qualifying coupled with durability needed for the race, which is again expected to be staged in high temperatures. The rules stipulate that, under normal circumstances, each team will receive six sets of the harder compound and five sets of the softer compound for each race weekend. Pirelli will also bring four sets of its intermediate and three sets of wets per driver.

WOLFF ‘ALMOST STAYED AT WILLIAMS F1 TEAM’. F1 PORTAL

New Mercedes motorsport head Toto Wolff reveals that he almost didn’t join the Three Pointed Star, but admits that, now that he has put his ‘neck on the line’, he has extra reasons to make the switch work for all concerned. Wolff, whose move caught many by surprise, told the official F1 website that, in fact, it almost didn’t happen at all, as he pondered leaving a Williams team where he had become happy and respected over a three-year spell. However, the lure of taking on the job of helping turn Mercedes into a regular championship challenger in F1 eventually prompted him to jump ship. “I fell for the idea immediately because it is such a fantastic opportunity, being involved on the worldwide motorsport side and on the F1 side, because I think that I can bring some added value. What was a real problem was the guys at Williams,” he explained. “I was there for three years, and in various operational roles in the last year, and people started to trust me. I was named as ‘the successor’. In reality, there will never be a successor to Frank Williams, but I was meant to run the team. How was I going to tell Frank? That was really hard. I gave myself one week to see how I felt and, after the third day, I almost decided to stay at Williams. I like the people there so much - everybody, from the race team, to the marketing department, to Frank himself. They all have been somewhat part of my

JAN 13, 2013 family and to tell them that I was leaving was very hard. “But then the opportunity is so huge. I spoke to the board and there was not one bad feeling - they all wished me luck and my relationship with them is completely intact. Frank’s first comment was ‘that’s interesting. I would do the same if such an opportunity came my way!’ So here we are!” Wolff, whose wife Susie continues to play an active role in the development of Williams’ F1 cars, admits that his arrival is no magic bullet for whatever ails Mercedes, but is confident that, along with a strong management team, he can help turn the team’s fortunes around.

Insisting that there is a clear-cut structure surrounding himself, Brawn and Niki Lauda, contrary to what was portrayed in the media following his appointment, Wolff has already made one key change to the way the team operates and will not hesitate to get involved again should he feel it needs it. “You cannot run an F1 operation in the UK out of Germany,” he explained, “It is not only a difference in mentality – and there is definitely a difference - but it is also about physically being there. Running a company from a distance never really works, so the question is either you run it full time or you don’t. And if you don’t, then you rely on management.

“The commitment from Mercedes is there, [but] F1 needs patience,” he stressed, “When you look back in history it shows that you cannot turn around a team within a couple of years. But then, where are we right now? Ross [Brawn] has worked hard with his team over the winter and there are some brilliant people there. I have met all of them in the last two weeks, [and] my gut feeling is positive. We will see where we are in a couple of weeks - actually Saturday 16 March in Melbourne. By then, I will develop a better picture of the structure of the team and see where input is needed.

RACE WIN NOT IMPOSSIBLE. F1 PORTAL

FEB 11, 2013

A race win is not out of the question for Toro Rosso in 2013. That is the claim of Daniel Ricciardo, who this year will tackle his second consecutive season with the Red Bull-owned team. Speaking to Spain’s AS newspaper, the Australian recalled his Toro Rosso test debut prior to the 2012 season. Now, Ricciardo insists, the feeling about the new STR8 is “more positive”. “I think our goal should be to become the best team after the big fight, so (competing with) Williams, Force India, Sauber. “For me it’s to be in the points regularly and if possible get some podiums.” 23-year-old Ricciardo was also asked about Red Bull’s Dr Helmut Marko, who had reportedly told former Toro Rosso driver Jaime Alguersuari to secure his place in F1 by winning a race. “Er, no, he hasn’t said anything like that to me,” Ricciardo smiled. “Last year, our car was not 18

The FREE online F1 Magazine | PORTAL

competitive enough, but we’ll see what we can do this time. “It’s not easy of course, but maybe with rain - thinking about what Vettel managed (at Monza in 2008) - then it’s not impossible to win with Toro Rosso.” AS correspondent Manuel Franco asked Ricciardo if Vettel’s success with the team in 2008 is like a weight around the neck of Toro Rosso’s subsequent drivers. “No I don’t think so,” he answered, “I think it’s really a motivation for us, to show us what is possible.” As for whether he might succeed his countryman Mark Webber at Red Bull’s main team in 2014, Ricciardo said: “What I have to do is have a good year and then let’s see. “I know what I have to focus on right now.”

The new car is the first Toro Rosso to receive input from technical director James Key, who joined the team from Sauber last season. Last season Toro Rosso finished ninth it was a disappointing campaign. This year team boss Franz Tost wants a marked improvement. “We have worked hard and hopefully done a good job these past months,” said Tost. “The three test sessions in Spain in February will begin to reveal some trends among the teams, but until we all line up on a real race grid, there will be no clear picture of what we can expect. “Nevertheless, we have set ourselves a target of finishing sixth in the Constructors’ classification.” He added: “Both drivers did a really good job last year, and I’m convinced if we supply them with a good car they’ll come up with surprise results.” “Naturally, we will be expecting more from them this year as they both tackle their second full season of Formula 1. “However, we are well aware it is up to us to provide them with a car that’s capable of allowing them to show their undoubted talent.

GOOD PROGRESS FOR LOTUS. F1 PORTAL

FEB 13, 2013

With the first pre-season test of 2012 done and dusted, Lotus are feeling pretty upbeat about their 2013 challenger this season. The team impressed in Jerez with Romain Grosjean topping the timesheets on day two in Spain and Kimi Raikkonen setting the fastest time on the fourth and final day. It is no surprise then that the feedback the duo have given to team principal Eric Boullier has been generally positive. “I would say there are a couple of things,” Boullier told the official Lotus website. “First of all, the feedback from the drivers after their first few laps is always very important; if you see them step out with a smile on their face you know the baseline of the car should be good and it was pleasing to see that from both Kimi and Romain. “On top of that, we managed to complete some decent mileage which

is always encouraging when you bring a brand new car to the track for the first time.“

Needless to say the team will be focusing on the reliability of the new E21 next week.

“Finally, the general pace of the car looked promising with each of our drivers. Of course, lap times are not representative of the order at this early stage of the season, but to be at the front of the pack without deliberately setting out to do so is always a plus.

“One of the main priorities now is to ensure that the reliability of the car matches up to the demands of the season ahead,” Boullier said.

“It doesn’t mean we will be World Champions, but we know the car works well and that’s a big credit to everyone involved.” The show now moves onto Barcelona and the team had some problems there during last year’s test when they were forced to withdraw on day one due to suspension problems.

“Barcelona is much more similar to the kind of format we will see throughout the year, so the information we gather here will be more relevant to our requirements at the different circuits on the calendar. “Another focus for the team will be to continue our analysis of the 2013 tyres to give us the best possible understanding of how the car will work with them.”

2014 POSSIBLE RISK?

THE BIG RISK Redbull team principal believes that the 2014 season could be a big risk for everyone due to the new era of the 1.6 litre turbocharged V6’s and other changes.

2014: A BIG RISK. F1 PORTAL

FEB 15, 2013

Christian Horner says F1 could undergo a dramatic change to the pecking order next season when the new engine regulations come into effect. Next season Formula One bids farewell to the current 2.4 litre V8 engines and welcomes in a new era of 1.6 litre turbocharged V6s. With the new engines comes a new set of challenges as the same races on this year’s calendar will need to be covered using 50kgs less fuel than at present while still getting a power output of 750hp. Red Bull will be sticking with Renault power through the change with Horner admitting F1’s pecking order could be altered if an engine supplier or team misses the mark. “I think that for sure 2014 is going to be a risk for everyone,” the Red Bull team boss told Autosport. “Nobody knows where anybody is 20

The FREE online F1 Magazine | PORTAL

with their respective engines at the moment, and you can see within Viry [Renault’s engine headquarters] there is a lot of determination and a lot of good work going on.

The Brit also rubbished suggestions that Ferrari and Mercedes could have the upper hand next season as they produce both the engine and the chassis.

“Renault has a tremendous track record and we have a lot of faith in the engineers at Viry. You can see where they are with their programme, while Mercedes and Ferrari are also pushing extremely hard as well.

“I think we have an extremely good relationship with the guys in Viry. And we have a clear [works] status with Renault,” Horner added.

“The racing in F1 next year could be quite different, and there could be more focus on economy than absolute performance. It will be an interesting challenge. “We have confidence in our engine partner, but we will only know in 2014.”

“There has been an awful lot of exchange of design ideas, and the way you integrate your chassis and your power plant into your chassis is a clear element. “Whether it is Mercedes in Brackley dealing with Brixworth or Milton Keynes dealing with Viry, that relationship I would assume is reasonably similar.”

FEB 15, 2013

The HRT Formula One team hit the sporting scrapheap on Friday with five of their cars, minus engines and gearboxes, sold to a Spanish auto-breaker and another going to Pirelli for promotional purposes. A Madrid-based car recycling firm has purchased five cars previously used by the now folded HRT Formula 1 team, company owner Teo Martin confirmed on Friday. Martin has acquired three cars from 2012 and two from 2011, while the engine units used in all five have been taken back by supplier Cosworth. A third car from 2011 was bought by Pirelli, which the Italian brand has confirmed will be used as a show car.

In addition to the cars, Martin has claimed a large proportion of the team’s general equipment from its headquarters - situated at the Caja Magica in Madrid. The businessman is planning to sell items to collectors who express an interest. A fortnight ago, there were reports that a group of investors from the United States and Canada had been looking at the possibility of purchasing HRT’s assets and entering the sport under the name of Scorpion Racing, but a deal did not come to fruition.F

MALDONADO TO DEBUT THE FW35. F1 PORTAL

FEB 16, 2013

Pastor Maldonado will debut Williams new FW35 when the team takes the covers off at the start of the second pre-season test. Williams was the only outfit that headed to Jerez, the first of the three outings, with last year’s car.

The team has confirmed that Maldonado will debut the FW35 on the morning of the 19th, just moments after Williams unveil it to the world.

The team opted to run their FW34 while evaluating new parts and the new Pirelli compounds. However, the team will have their 2013 car available for the second test, which takes place at Barcelona next week.

The Venezuelan will hand the car over to new team-mate Valtteri Bottas for Wednesday before sharing the cockpit for the final two days. The FREE online F1 Magazine | PORTAL
