New wine for RSA

By Celeste Alexander First came the olive oil, and now it’s a brand new wine label – it’s an exciting time for the Marlborough Returned Services’ Association (RSA) as they announce the launch of ‘Three Services’.

Branch president Chris Bamber says the RSA is always looking for ways to generate an income to help support the welfare of local veterans.

“When we introduced the idea of putting out a wine label, head office came back and said ‘what took you so long?’” she jokes.

The RSA Marlborough branch currently has a growing membership of 950, and in addition to holding services throughout the year, there is also a welfare team which works to help local veterans with everything from funding for eye glasses through to mobility scooter hire.

This is where profits from the Three Services wine will help the most and it’s all thanks to some creative thinking from members of the RSA Marlborough branch committee.

service he was supportive of the idea to produce the wine label, and offered to produce it.

“I’ve wanted to be involved with the RSA for a while so after moving to town from the Awatere it gave me more opportunity to get involved. Producing a quality wine brand to support veterans and assist other RSA activities is something my family is very proud to be involved with.

“It’s a single vineyard, 2019 Sauvignon Blanc of very good quality,” Peter adds. “In fact, it hasn’t been made public yet but it’s the same batch which won a Blue Gold award at the recent Sydney International Wine Competition.”

“It’s lovely to have a big company

to come in and help us with this,” Chris says. “Now it’s a case of seeing how it sells and generating feedback.”

The brand has been named ‘Three Services’ to represent Airforce, Navy and Army – a concept chosen by the RSA Marlborough committee.

“It’s using the same image as our olive oil label but designed differently using sepia tones to take on an older look,” Chris says.

Three Services was only launched two weeks ago and has already attracted its first order, 10 cases purchased by the Waiheke RSA. “We were rapt,” Chris says.

“I’m thinking it would make a great Christmas gift which is

supporting a great cause.”

Peter adds; “We are inviting retail wine outlets within Marlborough and around the country to purchase this exceptional wine, and if successful we will look at producing other varieties.”

The first tasting of the Three Services Sauvignon Blanc will be at the RSA’s veteran’s lunch on December 7.

By Celeste Alexander The festive season is nearly upon us and no one could be more excited than the musicians from TEMPO (Today’s Emerging Musicians Performing Onstage).

It’s been another exciting and successful year for the organisation, something which will be celebrated this Friday with a very special Christmas Concert – and you are all invited!

There will be a number of ‘regulars’ performing as well as at least seven first-time performers.

The evening will be complimented by the Salvation Army band giving their own performance, and to really show the Christmas spirit there will be a charity donation drive on the night.

It’s something TEMPO does annually a Salvation Army Toy Drive, collecting donations of toys to benefit local families in need this Christmas as an entry fee.

There will be a shared supper afterwards, so anyone attending is invited to bring a plate.

This will be the final TEMPO concert for the year, set for 7pm at the Wesley Centre on Henry Street, Blenheim.

Cancer survivor finds courage through karate By student reporter Frances Chin Back in August 2016 Grovetown resident Jackie Aitken found blood in her stool. She knew something was wrong. “I went to the doctor and asked for a colonoscopy.”

When the time for Jackie’s appointment approached, the surgeon couldn’t perform the procedure due to finding a “lump in the way.”

“I went to Christchurch for radiation therapy to stop the tumour from growing bigger and to singe the ends,” she says.

Nine days later she was in Nelson Hospital where she had the lump removed, but it was too late.

“They realised cancer cells [from the tumour] had snuck into my lymph nodes.”

It was from that point that Jackie was diagnosed with Colo-rectal cancer.

It came as a shock to Jackie to discover she had cancer due to her health orientated lifestyle. She ran every day, ate clean, and was a regular member of the Blenheim Seido Karate Dojo.

“I was fitter than I had ever been before. I ate my vegetables,” she says.

When offered chemotherapy, Jackie went through a grueling six month chemotherapy treatment.

It was in eight rounds, with three week intervals. She also had an ileostomy; a “bag with my guts poking out.” This allowed her intestine to heal, but made her feel self-conscious.

While undergoing Chemotherapy, Jackie practiced “Zazen meditation”, a form of sitting meditation that focuses on being

Welcome for Tuia 250 flotilla kicks off tomorrow The Diversion Gallery invites the public to attend its exhibition opening of ‘Meretoto – Wero, which takes place at 6pm tonight. This preview kicks off a multi-day event in and around Picton which begins tomorrow with the cultural welcome to the Tuia 250 flotilla led by tangata whenua iwi at Ship Cove.

On Friday from 10am the whole of Marlborough is invited to be part of the region’s biggest ever welcome as the flotilla arrives into Picton.

Kapa haka and other community groups will join the Mayor in greeting the crews from Tahiti, Aotearoa and Australia, then at night there will be a 3D animation and light installation, sponsored by Interislander.

On Saturday the festivities continue with an opportunity to explore the flotilla vessels, followed by the Kete Kai Street Market from 3pm and all day entertainment, including Fly My Pretties free concert on Picton’s Foreshore.

present and suspending negative thoughts and emotions. She says it helped her fight anxiety and stay present, helping to overcome her fear. “[It] helped me be mindful and in the moment,” Jackie says. “It helped me fight thoughts like – I have a headache, do I have a brain tumour?”

Jackie was unable to continue her karate or other exercise during her treatment. Despite this, Jackie felt the love from her local Dojo.

During Jackie’s treatment, the Blenheim Dojo held “Let’s Kick Butt” which was a thousand kicks

to raise money for cancer awareness. Jackie felt their support.

“I really felt the love and it helped me.” After completing her treatments and going into remission, this support helped Jackie return to karate.

She has now been in remission for several years and her ordeal is almost a distant memory. Jackie is happy to have regained her lifestyle, and is back to being as fit as ever. However, the experience has changed her.

“I’m 61 now. I’m calmer than I used to be.”

Jackie feels that the Seido phi-

losophy helped her get back into Karate after going through chemotherapy. The Seido philosophy means that each individual had their own method of achievement.

“Seido means ‘Sincere Way,’ says Jackie. “It begins and ends with courtesy, and means being your best and doing your best.” She and her son George do Seido Karate together, and are both Black belts.

“We did our black belt grading together which was really nice.”

George’s achievement, although similar, is different from her own.

“My best is different than anyone else’s best.”

Taking over the principal’s position at Marlborough Boys’ College in 2020 will be Jeremy Marshall, the current deputy principal.

He replaces Wayne Hegarty who officially leaves the college after a decade.

Ratapu was the Golden Shears Senior champion in 2009 and now runs a shearing contracting business out of Seddon with her husband Angus.

She lost out to world champion and Central Otago woolhandler, Pagan Karauria, who took out the title.

Last chance to see art More than 150 people turned out for the opening of the art Exhibition titled ‘le groupe II’ at the Marlborough Art Society Galleries. This exhibition features a group of 25 local artists, put together by the Artists of Marlborough, and runs through to this Sunday, November 24.

Artists of Marlborough chairperson, Gerard Verkaaik says such a wide ranging collection will not be seen again in Blenheim this year, “so make sure you don’t miss out”.

The exhibition closes Sunday at 4pm.

Speech on why ‘it’s good to be a girl’ wins contest

By Celeste Alexander Making a speech in front of people you don’t know is no small task, but it was made to look easy by a group of primary school students who took part in a Young Speechmaker contest recently.

It’s a contest that’s been held by the Blenheim Lions Club for the past 10 years, which sees students in Years 7 and 8 give speeches on a range of topics.

This year, 13 budding young orators delivered speeches on topics as diverse as ‘Gender Stereotypes’, ‘Uncoolness’, and ‘The Age of Bad Decisions – Mullets’.

The judges and audience of family and friends were entertained by some amusing pleas for exercise control, a cleaner environment and observations on New Zealand sailing prowess.

There were some “eloquent”

performances, one of the judges says, which gave them a tough task in deciding who the winners would be.

“All the contestants should be justifiably proud of their performances and the Blenheim Lions Club wishes them all the best of luck in the school years ahead of them.”

It was a speech titled ‘Gender Stereotype”, by Renwick School student Li-Na Chapman, which

took the top prize. Li-Na received the Williams Trophy for her speech on why it is good to be a girl.

Second place was awarded to Will Partridge of Bohally Intermediate who with humour, explained his uncoolness.

Third place went to Emily Harper of Fairhall School who persuaded the audience that it was bad to use Microfibre products.

Bike-a-thon fun!

By Aimee O’Hagan Saturday morning saw St Mary’s Preschool hold it’s first ever bike-a-thon.

Children aged approximately two years-old to primary school age dressed up in colourful costumes, decorated their bikes and helmets, and came along to St Mary’s School field to bike around one of two courses.

There was water on-hand for the kids, and even raffle tickets and a sausage sizzle available for a gold coin donation.

raised through the event is set to go towards funding a new playground at St Mary’s Preschool.

“This year we were only running the bike-a-thon as an event open to [those who attend] St Mary’s, but we are hoping that next year we will be able to open it to the community,” she says.

“The bike-a-thon is a pretty cool event which promotes fitness, gives the kids an opportunity to be active, and encourages participation.

“It’s just good fun!”

Deputy Mayor Nadine Taylor sworn in Marlborough Sounds Ward Councillor Nadine Taylor is Marlborough’s new Deputy Mayor, and was sworn in today by Mayor John Leggett last Thursday.

Nadine Taylor will also chair the Assets and Services Committee, overseeing the management of the Council’s big-budget assets and amenities infrastructure.

“Nadine has excelled in her role as a Councillor over the last three years. We work well together and I’m confident she has the qualities to be outstanding in the role,” Mayor Leggett says.

Nadine says it is an honour to become the Deputy Mayor of Marlborough.

“I admire Mayor John Leggett’s inclusive leadership style and we have a very good team of councillors who I’m sure will work cooperatively to take the whole of Marlborough forward.

Through my Assets and Services role I will ensure that the Council continues its focus on ensuring that Marlborough’s core infrastructure, in particular water, transport and sewerage, is prioritised. Nadine hails from the Awatere and attended Seddon School and Marlborough Girls’ College. For the last 21 years she has lived in Picton, and also for a time in Tory Channel, in the outer

Marlborough Sounds. She has extensive business experience as an owner of a rock lobster fishing company.

Nadine also works part-time for Ngati Apa ki te Ra To on a long-term project to catalogue the iwi archives and taonga. She and her partner Graham have two adult sons.

Wairau-Awatere Councillor Francis Maher was also sworn in last Thursday, and becomes Chair of the Regional Transport Committee.

The Council retains the same committee structure as the previous term, but the Environment Committee has been strengthened to reflect its workload.

New library location

Dear Ed Couldn’t help reading in the public notices (Wed 6 November) how there’s to be a meeting in regards to plane noises. Just hope those living in Omaka aren’t complaining already. After-all, the airport’s been there for years. Nothing better than watching the good old planes flying around. Love them.

Now that the new library site has been confirmed and building to start soon, what plans has the council got to provide parking there?

The library at its present site, the people using the library can park free of charge at the Countdown carpark, also those travelling by bus, the bus stops opposite the

library.

Will the council provide free parking and will the bus route be amended to include a stop close to the library? If not this will mean an extra charge for those who use their own transport, and a longer walk for those infirm and aged and not so fit to walk any distance.

Proposed 80 kph speed limit Blenheim to Nelson I am a retired Civil Engineer having worked as Golden Bay County Engineer, Marlborough County Roading Engineer, Manager MDC Professional Services Business Unit and 10 years as Senior Assset Manager with Marlborough Roads among other roles. I have undertaken Audits and Safety Audits throughout NZ. I believe the proposal to lower speed limits between Blenheim and Nelson to 80 kph will have emanated from the Nelson or Wellington NZTA offices; the management centres for ‘Marlborough Roads’ One would imagine Nelson may be ambivalent about the proposal;

the section at Hira and towards the City are already posted 80 kph; the Whangamoas are effectively 80 kph anyway because of much of the alignment AND beyond Hira there is a negligible population, however, many Nelsonians will travel the Marlborough sections of the highway to visit Blenheim or Picton or travel South.

By contrast in Marlborough there are long straight sections of highway and also significant commuters between Rai Valley, Havelock, Renwick, Woodburne and Blenheim so the effects on Marlborough section travellers will be much more significant.

People should be aware that the

increased travel times calculated are on the whole route, and in fact, will almost exclusively adversely affect the Marlborough sections of the highway ie they will almost all impact on the Marlborough component of the route.

Many years ago Marlborough, Nelson and Tasman became Unitary Authorities with the dual functions of a District and a Regional Council.

One of the Regional Council functions is to produce a Regional Land Transport Strategy, to liaise with other interested roading groups ( including NZTA ) and to provide the Chair for, and hold regular RLTC meetings.

Council as the significant part of the Regional Land Transport Commitee should oppose this proposal on our behalf.

I notice there are 2 significant petitions opposing the reduction, and that MPs Dr Nick Smith (Doctorate in Engineering) and Stuart Smith are to present these on our behalf.

People should be aware of the implications of this proposal; I am sure every one is concerned about road safety however blanket applications of arbitrary speed reductions are not a considered solution, and I suggest are just someones ‘gut’ response.

More passing opportunities are

urgently needed and Council should be pursuing these on your behalf.

If speed reduction is the answer to solving traffic problems consider this; the first motor vehicle invented by Cugnot which traveled near walking speed was also involved in the first traffic accident as it had no brakes and ran into a nearby building. Perhaps we revert to having a man with a red flag walking in front of vehicles or why not 60 , 70 , 75 or any other number someone dreams up in an office.

There is more to good safety engineering than just dreaming up proposals like this!

Students hear tale of Tupaia By student reporter Frances Chin Illustrator Mat Tait visited Blenheim School on Monday to discuss his new book, ‘The Adventures of Tupaia.’ He also visited schools in Spring Creek, Rapaura, Grove Town, and Tua Marina.

With the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s arrival in Aotearoa approaching, Mat’s aim is to bring awareness to a hidden figure in New Zealand history.

His book - ‘The Adventures of Tupaia’ is illustrated by himself and written by Courtney Sina Meredith.

It tells the story of Tupaia, a Tahitian priest and Captain Cook’s navigator.

“Tupaia was a fascinating, interesting, important figure,” says Mat. “However, the story of this man has largely been forgotten.

“Captain Cook has stolen the limelight.”

He hopes the book will bring Tupaia’s story to a wider audience.

Mat has always had an interest in New Zealand history and mythology. Told by family that he was “painting before [he] could walk”, he always saw [himself] as a

painter.

He attended Art School in Ilam, Christchurch, and graduated with a BFA. More than anything, his book illustration style is “definitely informed by comic books”, he says.

His life-long love of comics was inspired by British label 2000AD; and comic books like Judge Dredd were his favourite.

Mat’s previous work includes anthologies such as ‘Love Stories’, and ‘The Heading Dog Who Split In Half: Legends and Tall Tales From New Zealand’.

Re. Cellphones and driving I agreed! Successive Ministers of Transport have failed the public. The fine for using a mobile while driving has been $80 for nine years plus a handful of demerits.

I know a business owner who has been caught three times (and still phones/txtx while driving)!

If the fine had been $400plus (as in Australia), he would no doubt have invested in a $20 hands free device.

I suspect if the the fine was realistic, the Police would enforce it more rigorously. If I see 20 drivers offending while driving towards me, every day in two hours, while mobile, including 40 ton truckies, imagine how many offenders would be apprehended by three officers (one sitting in an unmarked car) working together....job done!

Owen Rarity raring to go at Dolce Owen Rarity is enjoying being his own boss in his home town. The new Dolce owner talks to Jacob Page about travelling, lasagne, empty fridges and the Sunday trade battle in Blenheim.

Owen Rarity jokes if you come to his place for a dinner party he will serve you lasagne.

“It’s my go-to dish because you can pre-cook it and put it in the oven when the guests arrive and be part of the fun yourself.

“Why have people over for dinner if you can’t enjoy their company?”

The 35-year-old chef is the new owner of Dolce restaurant.

The born-and-bred Marlburian says it was time to come home and he is happy to be back in the province he grew up.

At the same time he is also trying to shake up the norm when it comes to the hospitality scene.

After almost 20 years away cooking in Auckland, Australia and the middle-east, Owen says he wants to work for himself.

“You can’t bring your ego into the mix.”

“Having done nine years in Auckland I’d been working a busy job in higher management as director of food and beverage at Rydges so I oversaw, the kitchen, restaurant, events and room service and I had 60 staff but I was going through the motions and I wanted to do something for myself.

“I’m at the age now where I can give this a go because I’d hate to look back and regret not trying this.

“It’s nice to be my own boss and to rely on myself.”

He said cooking overseas put him outside his own comfort zone.

“I’m not a naturally outgoing person by nature but it built confidence in me.

“I was often alone in a foreign environment and it was a big learning curve and you have to make it work.

“I think it made me a more confident businessman and to know how to take risks.

“Auckland isn’t a place you can just start a restaurant.

“There’s more competition so it’s best to go to the regions and obviously it made sense to come back to a place I was familiar with.”

He said he was keen to find the right balance between staying true to what worked with Dolce under the previous regime while also adding his own touches.

“There are things on the menu I can’t remove because there would be a revolt.

“You can’t bring your ego into the mix.

“If the muffins are working why change them?

“If the pizzas are working in their current form then there’s no need to take them away.

“It’s one thing I learnt was to look at what the customer wants and what is best for the business, not just what is good for a chef’s ego.

“I don’t have a particular dish I love to cook for people, I think I can do most things well.”

He admits once you’ve spent a day

in the kitchen, it did impact his desire to cook for himself at home.

“My fridge was often pretty empty in Auckland.

“You don’t have an appetite when you get home and you tend to gravitate towards the takeaway foods when you get home.”

Owen says he was keen to stick with opening on a Sunday which is a rare move for cafes and

restaurants in Blenheim.

“I want to put my own stamp on it but I have to be sympathetic to what the market wants.

“I will put my own spin on it but that won’t happen overnight, it’ll happen in time. “(Sunday trading) is a huge risk.

“So far it hasn’t met my expectations and has been quite disappointing but I have to get the word out there and at least

trial it.”

He says there is pleasure in being back in the kitchen fulltime.

“My last job I wore a suit, I wasn’t in the kitchen, I didn’t do the dishes and I didn’t peel, cut, dice or fry anything and I had a big team and resources.

“Now it’s me - I do all that stuff.

“It’s nice to be the one who opens the doors in the morning and closes them at night and it’s nice to be my own boss.”

Going down in history

REVIEW

Marlborough Repertory Society’s vibrant (and ever so slightly spicy) play, ‘Nell Gwynn’, effectively showcases spectacular local talent.

By Aimee O’Hagan In my opinion, a truly entertaining show – no matter it’s plot or key message – has three main qualities: a dash of humour, plenty of convincing characters, and the ability to keep an audience tranfixed.

Fortunately, Marlborough Repertory Society’s production of Nell Gwynn (written by Jessica Swale and directed by Pam Logan and Tamara Henry) possesses all three.

It’s a brilliant, dazzlingly witty, and extremely bawdy play set in 1660s England, and follows the true story of one of London’s

first actresses, Nell Gwynn (Aley Matthews).

Discovered by actor, Charles Hart (Gordon Ritchie), Nell is taken under the wing of theatre group, the King’s Company, and quickly becomes popular amongst theatre goers – particularly males.

Much to her fellow actors’ dismay, Nell quickly catches the eye of King Charles II (Jaemes Churchward), who takes her as his mistress and eventually falls in love with the young actress.

It’s safe to say that Aley sparkles in the title role; she pays remarkable homage to the part of Nell and portrays the character’s devel-

opment with effortless expertise.

Emily Watts as Nell’s sister, Rose Gwynn, and Alison Dight as the king’s other mistress, Lady Castlemaine, are also two clear stand outs.

Emily, in particular, absolutely nails Rose’s accent and doesn’t fail to convince me that her character lives in the slums of 1660’s London.

The play’s underlying idea of feminism is fitting, especially in today’s modern age.

Although it’s based on events of yesteryear, the show is less a story of theatre history, and more the journey of a strong

woman defying stereotypes and overcoming various obstacles that stand in her way.

Despite it’s unfortunately long length, Nell Gwynn is a compelling show that offers something for everyone – period-inspired costumes, more than enough obscure references, even catchy music – and is not to be missed.

Nell Gwynn is only showing at Blenheim’s Boathouse Theatre until November 23, so get your tickets now before they sell out!

It's been over five months since Blenheim 18 year-old, Shannon McLean, found out that she was one of 22 young kiwis selected for the Global Development Tour 2020 Delegation (run by charitable organisation, UN Youth New Zealand). Since that point in time, she has done all she can to raise the $10,000 required to go on the trip, which will take her across Europe and the U.S., and give her the opportunity to talk to world leaders.

In fact, she's excited to say she has successfully raised the $10,000.

Fundraising efforts involved holding a sausage sizzle at Hunter's Wine (which included Mr Whippy, a bouncy castle, a garage sale, and raffles), getting in touch with The Inspire Foundation, and more. Children shine through Creative Kids The power of the arts and the strong bond within a community - two things which are being celebrated by the Creative Kids Trust based right here in Marlborough.

Five years ago the Trust was established by local couple Liz McKay and Greg Simpson, a concept born from their desire to support community.

“We wanted it to benefit children who would not normally have the opportunity to shine, as well as embracing and connecting the community at the same time,” Greg says.

From there the charity was born, initially funded by Liz and Greg’s businesses, then as time went on numerous grants, donations and fundraising projects have seen the whole operation grow to what it is today.

“After establishing the Trust we took the idea of music therapy to the community, speaking with local schools, health organisations and referral agencies. They all embraced the idea referring children to the pilot programme and from here their ongoing and growing support continues,” Liz says.

Creative Kids Trust is built upon the belief that music, movement and art can be used to connect with people; strengthen the community, and provide a safe place for vulnerable children to grow and flourish.

Since its beginnings the Creative Kids Trust has gone on to utilise the therapeutic nature of music and art, while touching the lives of 150 local children aged from preschool through to college.

to the brim with support materials – from mats for creative kids who use wheelchairs, swiss balls, chimes, drums, bells, shakers, triangles, tambourines, to a gong and many, many more instruments and materials.

Recent grants from the Mazda Foundation and The Blue Door has the Trust looking forward to shopping this Christmas for a further dozen djembes and to expand their art supplies.

Keen recyclers the Trust has delightfully received musical donations which has supported their community piano idea based at Blenheim Library, and enough guitars and ukuleles to lend to schools for groups of children without family resources to learn an instrument.

Several drums were recently spied at the Marlborough Resource Recovery Centre and purchased for a song. It didn’t

take drummer and the Trust’s Art Facilitator Emma Toy long to assess what was further required to assemble a full drum kit, which has been joyfully embraced by the college-aged creative kids.

None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of charitable trusts, businesses and individuals who have donated towards fundraisers, purchased tickets for shows and provided services in aid of the Trust.

Supporting vulnerable children to grow through the arts

The power of music and art The power and influence that music and art has on a person is something quite special.

The Creative Kids Trust’s programmes sees staff walk alongside the children with music and visual art therapy, founder Liz McKay says.

It can evoke strong emotions such as joy and happiness. It strengthens sense of self and creates a natural flow on effect to improve our health and well-being.

The Trust is the only non-profit charity in the country offering a variety of arts therapies to children with vulnerabilities and challenges.

Beside this they connect through arts in the community with initiatives such as the street piano, community choir and fundraising events such as the Stars in Your Eyes show and The Great Blenheim Bake Off. “The piano will soon be back at the library, tuned and looking fresh from its winter facelift,” advises Liz. Creative Voice, the community choir meets weekly on a Thursday evening.

“Our youngest member is aged 10 and the choir’s there for everyone to be part of, regardless of musical ability. What’s more those who take part regularly donate a small contribution in lieu of a subscription, and those donations support

a creative kid throughout the year,” Music Therapist, Anna Moore says.

Five years down the track and the Creative Kids Trust is proud of its evolution and is now reflecting on what it has learnt along the way.

“This is what our community have created. We simply wouldn’t be here if Marlborough hadn’t got behind Creative Kids and given it heart.”

“We’ve had some children enrolled with us from the start and several of them are ready to fly.

We look forward to implementing some fresh ideas in the community next year and we hope to welcome new faces to the Board,” Greg says.

The Creative Kids Trust has helped 50 Creative Kids this year from 12 local schools and various health organisations. It currently operates programmes within schools and out of St Ninians Church hall with the eventual goal of finding a home of its own.

“Everything we do is connected back to the children and the wider community. There is no way for us to thank everyone enough for what they have done to support Creative Kids Trust.

“Our community has brought the children into their hearts in the way in which they are the heart of Creative Kids. Thank you for supporting our creative kids to shine,” Liz says.

Secret Santa, a fun way to buy this Christmas Secret Santa, Kris Kringle… it’s known by many names and has been a popular tradition among friends, work colleagues and families for many years.

Why? Because it creates a way for a group of people to still enjoy the giving and receiving of Christmas gifts, but in a way that’s made affordable.

It’s thought the tradition first began with an American philanthropist who spent 20 years partaking in random acts of kindness for others throughout the year.

It went on to be dubbed ‘Secret Santa’ as the craze caught on and now it’s something enjoyed by all ages, and in many parts of the world.

How it works? Instead of buying for a whole group of people, who you would normally buy individual gifts for, everyone’s names are written onto a piece of paper and put into a hat.

Each person draws out a name and that is who they purchase for. A purchase limit is set, whether it be $10, $50 or more, and everyone in that group receives a gift.

The gifts are wrapped and placed under the Christmas tree with only the recipient’s name on it – adding to the secrecy and fun.

It’s also great for families who have a lot of adults to buy for. It’s not too late to start the tradition now!

Golf croquet tournament

By Aimee O’Hagan It was an exciting weekend for Marlborough’s golf croquet enthusiasts, many of whom took part in the annual Croquet Marlborough Veterans Handicap Tournament at the Brooklyn Croquet Club last Saturday and Sunday.

Members of Brooklyn and Blenheim Croquet Clubs – and even two players from Christchurch and eight from Riwaka Club – took part in the tournament, playing golf croquet handicap doubles on Saturday and singles on Sunday.

According to tournament manager, Glenys Stevenson, there were 24 entries for the doubles section and 12 for the singles.

Those competing played five games on Saturday and five on Sunday, with each game lasting 50 minutes.

“The greens at Brooklyn are of a very high standard,” Glenys says.

Riwaka Club players, June Ferguson and Mike Speak, took out first place in the golf croquet handicap doubles competition, with Christchurch’s Hornby Club members, Alan and Jude Belcher in second place. Jan Cleland and Peter Burt from Brooklyn Club came third.

Blenheim Club player, Ron Ereckson, came first in the singles competition, with Alan Gare from Brooklyn Club coming second and Sam Robinson from Blenheim Club third.

“Golf croquet is extremely popular, great fun, but is highly competitive while being very tactical,” Glenys says.

“Anyone of any age can play it!

“The next Marlborough golf croquet tournament will be held on March 14 and 15, 2020, and the Golf Croquet World Team Championship will be held in Nelson next year.”

Ground shaking race action this Saturday

By Celeste Alexander If there was to be a speedway meeting to attend this season, Eastern States Speedway has put together a race line-up for this Saturday that’s one not to be missed.

Saturday’s meeting will be the third for the club’s 2019/2020 season and it’s been filled with something for all race fans.

If it’s the production cars which race for points under the no-contact rule, then the Production Saloon Open Champs & Martin Motors 20 Lap Trophy will be the feature to watch.

For those who prefer speed, noise and ground-shaking engines then the ‘monsters of the track’ modifieds promise a night of action.

The SMH Mainland Modified Series will see eight out-of-town drivers come together on Eastern States Speedway’s track to provide some top class racing.

These lightweight cars are equipped

with huge amounts of horsepower, massive wings on top to provide downforce, and huge tyres to provide grip. They showcase some of the fastest racing you will see in speedway and Blenheim will be hosting some of the country’s top drivers.

This will be a good opportunity for the modifieds to get some track time ahead of the South Island Modifieds Championship on February 1, 2020.

The other drawcard feature of the night will be at the opposite end of the scale. They don’t have big wings and huge tyres, but they do make their way around the track pretty quick, and at times can have you sitting on the edge of your seat – sidecars!

The RVTS Sidecar Dash 4 Ca$h will see two local teams take on rivals from Palmerston North, Nelson, Christchurch and Invercargill.

There will be 14 pairings (rider and swinger) separated into four groups, run in three heats per group. The

And to top off a night of great racing, stockcar fans will be delighted to know that there will be some teams racings between old foes, Blenheim and Christchurch.

will see a Christchurch team take on Blenheim in a feature race that’s designed specifically for novice and first time teams’ drivers. This will be complimented with three open stockcar races.
