Lieke set to go Gaga

By Celeste Alexander If you haven’t heard of Lieke Tegels before, you will soon after she performs as American singer and songwriter Lady Gaga at the Stars in Your Eyes show on Saturday, August 17. The event is a joint fundraising initiative for two local charities, Creative Kids Trust and Fulton Foundation, and is being held at the ASB Theatre. The bubbly, fun loving blonde from Holland will be swapping her look for Lady Gaga’s flamboyant style for her performance, something she’s more excited than nervous about. “Oh my gosh… I’m definitely very excited. I don’t get nervous easily but that might kick in minutes before the show,” she laughs. The 29-year-old came to Marlborough nearly a year ago to work in the wine industry as a hospitality co-ordinator for Cloudy Bay. Back home in Holland, Lieke has been in covers bands over the years but stepping out on stage for the Stars in Your Eyes contest is something she’s never done before. “We don’t have things like this in Holland and it’s certainly not as community focused as what NZ is. “I had actually heard about the show from another contestant who encouraged me to audition. At first

I thought about singing one of her new songs, but then I decided that I wanted to be more like Lady Gaga and stand out. “What I love about her is that she knows exactly what she wants. She’s an amazing artist with her own style which is why I have chosen one of her earlier songs to perform,” Lieke says. To complete her look, Lieke isn’t giving too much away but does hint at it being something unique. “Let’s just say I’m doing lots of gluing, cutting and pasting at home,” she grins. For her chosen charity which will benefit from any prize money, Lieke has chosen the Graeme Dingle Foundation. “I chose this organisation because I love its values. If we all shared the values of resilience, respect and positive relations the world would be a better place,” she says. The Stars in Your Eyes show was originally featuring 10 contestants, however the Jessica Rabbit performance has unfortunately had to pull out. However the other nine contestants remaining are promising
