World Cup safe sex drive By Celeste Lodewyk Family Planning Blenheim health promoter Michelle Dawson is an avid All Blacks fan, so much so that she has created a Rugby World Cup “Safer Sex” promotion to run throughout the tournament. Michelle has partnered up with Helen McLean from the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board to promote safer sex practices for locals travelling throughout the country and visitors staying in the region. “The RWC presents unique circumstances in that along with celebrations there will be a lot of drinking which can lead to impairment in decision making. “This promotion is the ideal way to remind people that sexual consent must be consensual and safe,” Michelle says. Students rise to challenge It looked like a Master Chef Kitchen challenge at Bohally Intermediate’s technology centre on Thursday, as students frantically battled deadline to bake more than 400 cupcakes for an SPCA fundraiser. The 440 animal cupcakes sold within the community raised $800 for the Marlborough SPCA as part of the organisation’s Cupcake Day initiative. Bohally Intermediate technology teacher Heather Webster says the students did a superb job considering their age and the pressure they were under. “Some of them have never actually done this before,” she says. The students received some assistance from members of Blenheim’s Cake Decoration Guild.
