U

Uvodnik / Editorial: Dragi pohodniki! Dear hikers, Bled is Slovenia’s premier alpine resort and one of the most charming travel destinations in Europe. The lake embellished with an island and the castle sitting atop a powerful rock above the lake, set against the backdrop of the mighty summits of the Julian Alps and Karavanke and cradled by the valleys of the rivers Sava Dolinka and Sava Bohinjka, Bled is an image of paradise, an area of such natural beauty that it reaches beyond the imagination of the greatest painters. The best way to explore the Bled area is to take a stroll through its villages, hike to the top of its mountains and isolated scenic hills, and walk the trails that wind between natural sights and points of interest, past examples of vernacular architecture, through fields, meadows and pastures and along rivers and streams. You are walking at your own risk! When setting on a walking tour, wear appropriate walking shoes and clothing, and bear in mind the weather. Enjoy your walk!

Martina. The paths leading to the top of Grajski hrib (Castle Hill) are definitely the most frequented in the area. Any hiker who reaches the top of the hill will hike up further up to Bled Castle to enjoy the amazing views of the town of Bled, its lake and the countryside beyond. The Castle features a museum, chapel, herbal apothecary, wine cellar, painting gallery and printing works with an original Guteberg printing press, as well as a restaurant offering refreshments for tired hikers. The hike to Grajski hrib starts at Veslaška promenada (Rowers’ Promenade), where you can first take a look at the monument dedicated to Slovenia’s greatest poet, Dr France Prešeren. Proceed along the street and then turn right into the well-maintained footpath for the Castle. You can also start your ascent of Grajski hrib from Bledec, Grajska Street, or from Pristava on its western slope. All three trails merge into one at the Castle car park. From there, it is a short stretch to the promontory Na Pečeh, towering above St Martin’s parish church.

The path to Višce begins at the Dr France Prešeren monument, from where you continue as if going towards the castle. Soon the path makes a turn and traverses over the slopes of Grajski hrib (Castle Hill) and on towards the Mala Zaka bay. It crosses Višce just above the lake, giving you a chance to admire the stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside although for most of the time your view of the lake, Straža Hill, the island and the village Mlino will be slightly obscured by trees. At Mala Zaka, the path turns right and continues through Rečica before completing its circle at the starting point. During the walk you can make a stop at the monument to Adolf Muhr, a former owner of Bled Castle and the lake. Višce is lined with connecting paths which can be taken to add some spice to the hike. From the Adolf Muhr monument, you can descend to Jezerca (Lakelets) to observe its wetland flora. Beyond Jezerca the path not in the best condition, so you might want to return to the original trail and continue towards Pristava instead.

If you want to visit Straža Hill, you can start your hike at the village of Mlino, either at the crossroads of Cesta svobode and Mlinska Street, or further along Mlinska Street at the Ledrar farm. Both access routes soon join into one. From there you ascend the west slope of Straža right up to its highest point. In the immediate vicinity there is a mountain hut and the top ski lift station. At this point the path joins a fit-trail which runs over the plateau, with spectacular views opening up of the lake, castle, hamlets and villages, as well as of distant places and mountain massifs. There is a variety of activiites in which you can partake to add a little extra to your hike. You can use the exercise equipment set up along the trail, visit the adventure park, or take a slide down the toboggan run that is open all year round. The most suitable ascent to Straža is from the village Želeče, and starts at the bottom station of the ski lift. This path joins the lowest point of the fit-trail and then ascends towards the top. On the descent, follow the trail towards Dindol to Cesta v Megre Street that will take you back to the centre of Bled.

V dolini so lepo vidna blejska naselja in vasi v okolici. Osojnica Hill rises up off the west coast of Lake Bled and has two peaks: Mala Osojnica (691m) and Velika Osojnica (756m). On the northern slope, Osojnica is flanked by another hill, Ojstrica (610m). It is worth mentioning that Mala Osojnica with its stunning views is a must-go place for anyone wishing to take a fantastic photo of Lake Bled and its surroundings. The view from the top stretches over the lake to the slopes of the Pokljuka and Mežakla plateaus, and the Karavanke mountains, resting first on the local villages and then further across the Sava Dolinka river to the hamlets at the foot of the Karavanke. Two more vistas on the southern edge of Mala Osojnica offer views of the Sava Bohinjka river and the Jelovica plateau. Osojnica can be accessed along a well-kept trail which features a few steep steps and is not suitable for people suffering from vertigo, or by a forest road that is also used as a skid trail.

Stan (stan is Slovene for a shepherds’ dwelling) consists of a series of three plains, each positioned slightly higher up the slope of the hill above the Velika Zaka bay behind the edge of Rebr. In the past these plains were mostly used as pastures for small cattle. Today the shepherds’ dwellings are gone, and the plains are becoming overgrown, but the footpaths spread across Stan continue to attract hikers. Before setting off on your way, stop and take a look at the giant spruce tree. With a height of 37 m, circumference of 3.78 m and trunk volume of 18m3, the spruce is indeed impressive. If you started your hike to the giant spruce at the signpost of Kolodvorska Street and continued via Rebr, you can now descend on the opposite side of the plains. Just above the last house of Razgledna Street in the direction of Rečica you will catch a sight of Lake Bled. Sit on the bench at this vantage point and enjoy Bled vistas. From Stan you can walk further to Rčitno, Slamniki and Bohinjska Bela, or take a short hike up the hills of Kuhovnica and Ravnica.

Opis poti / Trail description: Hrib Hom (834 m) se dviga severno nad vasjo Zasip. Južna stran hriba je v predelu nad vasjo v glavnem travnat svet. Hom (834 m) rises to the north above the village of Zasip. The south side of the hill is mostly grasslands. In the middle of the slope, where the terrain levels slightly, stands the church of St Catharine (Sv. Katarina) and a multi-use event venue with Jurček Inn. This is where visitors can enjoy long vistas across the Karavanke mountains and the Jelovica plateau, or look to the west and let their gaze drift across the Pokljuka plateau to the Triglav mountain range. Amidst these high-altitude plateaus and mountain massifs lie the Bled basin and Radovljica plain. The steep northern slope of Hom and Udin Boršt opposite of it flank the Vintgar gorge. You can start your ascent of Hom from Zasip, which stretches along the southern slope of Hom, its top part called Rebr pushing high up towards the top. The second starting point is in the village Podhom. Both paths will take you around the top of Hom and then to the top itself, which does not offer any views. From St Catharine’s church you can continue your hike to the Šum waterfall and further through the majestic Vintgar gorge.

The Vintgar gorge, carved out between the hills of Hom and Udin Boršt by the Radovna river, ranks among the most beautiful natural ravines in Slovenia and you it is almost impossible to find a visitor to Bled who has not seen it. The Vintgar gorge was discovered in 1891 but demanding works, including the construction of bridges, footpaths and galleries, had to be carried out before the gorge was opened to the public on 26 August 1893. The Radovna leaves the gorge on its east side, dropping deep over the rocks as the Šum waterfall. The bridge spanning across the waterfall’s drop dates back to 1878. The most popular entrance to the gorge is from Podhom, although access from Zasip via St Catherine’s Church and past the Šum waterfall is also possible.

Dolžina poti [km] / Length [km]

Opis poti / Trail description: Dobra gora (620 m) se dviga nad vasjo Selo pri Bledu. Domačini jo imenujejo tudi Špik. Danes je v celoti poraščena z različnim drevjem. Na Dobri gori in na travnikih ob njenem vznožju najdemo prav neverjetno množico cvetočih rastlin. Gozdnato pobočje tega osamelca nudi življenjski prostor srnjadi, zajcem in lisicam. The hill Dobra gora (620 m), known by locals as Špik, rises up above the village Selo pri Bledu. Nowadays, its slopes are entirely overgrown with trees but the meadows stretching out at its foot are a colourful carpet of wild flowers. The wooded slopes of this hillock are home to deer, rabbits and foxes. Dobra gora was already used by tourists in Arnold Rikli’s time. There used to be a bowling green and a wooden cottage that was used for hay storage and catered to the needs of tourists. Hikers will enjoy wonderful views that open up from the top of Dobra gora. Looking from the west to the east you will see the villages of the Bled area scattered across the slopes above the Sava Bohinjka river. To the west there is the Triglav mountain range, to the south the massive slopes of the Jelovica plateau, and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps to the east. There are three access routes to Dobra gora: start from the direction of Bled, and then you can hike to the top from Selska Street near Dindol, or from Cesta v Megre Street that can also be reached from Mlino. From the foot of Dobra gora, the trail is marked.

Mt Galetovec (1259 m) is situated on the south-eastern edge of the Pokljuka plateau. It is relatively easily accessible from the Pokljuka side but on the Bohinjska Bela side, its slopes come to an abrupt end in the precipitous rock face of Široka peč that renders access from this direction difficult but awards the hiker who reaches the top with striking vistas. The edge of the plateau searves as the eastern border of Pokljuka as well as Triglav National Park. From the top of Galetovec unique vistas offer views of fields, meadows and villages from Bohinjska Bela and Bled to Radovljica. The villages under the Karavanke mountains and the Jelovica plateau can be seen as well. Lake Bled flanked by hillocks lies beneath you as if it were a postcard in the palm of your hand. To the north, your gaze wanders over mountain peaks along the Pokljuka plateau and then further towards the Karavanke range. It is a view unrilvalled by any other. Galetovec can be climbed along several hiking trails. All ascent routes from the valley start in Bohinjska Bela, although hikers can also start from higher-lying parts of Pokljuka and follow the forest road past the Belska planina alp, which forks off from the main Gorjuše-Mrzli studenec road.

The rocky edge of the Jelovica plateau is called babji zob (Hag’s Tooth). It is a place where the slope above the village of Kupljenik makes a 90-degree turn towards Bohinj. It got its name because of the rocky stump which juts upwards just above the bottom of the rock. The top of Babji zob provides a stunning view of Bohinjska Bela and its surrounding hamlets of Obrne, Brezje, Slamniki and of course, just below the edge, Kupljenik. The view stretches towards Bohinj and follows the Sava Bohinjka as it leaves the narrow Soteska ravine at Obrne, where it turns to Bohinjska Bela and meanders gently east towards Selo pri Bledu, Ribno and Bodešče until joining the Sava Dolinka near Radovljica. From Babji zob you can see as far as the Pokljuka plateau set against the backdrop of the Triglav range, or admire the impressive massif of the Karavanke to the north. A large part of the Bled basin and its lake lie serenely below you. The most popular starting point for hikes to Babji zob is from the car park in the village of Kupljenik. The trail runs across the pastures of Kovačevec and Prihod, and further up to the edge of the Jelovica plateau.

A walk to Kupljenik will take you through the village Selo pri Bledu, which has preserved some of its rural character typical of the early 20th century and mixed it with contemporary features. The village boasts several types of tourist accommodation, including Povšin and Mulej tourist farms, Lukanc guesthouse and Matjon self-catering holiday apartments. The trail to Kupljenik will take you through the village to the grazing grounds of Frate and Spodnja Loka and to the bridge across the Sava Bohinjka (Selo Bridge). Turn right after the bridge and go right across the Zabriše pasture. There the trail takes a steep climb uphill over the Koren saddle to Kupljenik’s level terrain of Ravan. Here, under the slope of Jelovica, sits the small village of Kupljenik with a lovely church dedicated to St Stephen. Just above the village you will find Gradišče, a hill that offers a nice view of the Bled basin. The starting point for Gradišče is the same as for Babji zob or the undeground cave Jama pod Babjim zobom. The views of the meadows, villages and the Sava Bohinjka in the first part of the hike are matched by the vistas from Gradišče, almost as impressive as those from the much higher Babji zob.

Jama pod Babjim zobom (Cave under Babji zob) is a small karst cave at the bottom of a steep rocky wall southwest of Babji zob. The entrance to the cave is situated 1008 m above sea level and approximately 300 m of the cave is open to the public. The tunnel is quite wide and high at the beginning, with no calcite formations. Halfway through the tunnel you can see two chasms and the cave forks into two separate tunnels. This is where the cave reveals its karstic character as it widens into a chamber adorned with calcite formations. The temperature inside the cave is a constant 8 °C. The cave entrance can be reached by a less well-maintained path from the car park in Kupljenik. Alternatively, you can take the forest road to the car park Pod zobom which forks off right (to the west) in the middle of the Bohinjska Bela-Kupljenik road, and then follow the footpath to the cave entrance. Tours are guided and only available by prior arrangement.

Hidden away from views from the valley, on the slopes of the Jelovica plateau, lies a grassy plain called Talež. The bottom of the plain splits into two parts, with the left one spreading towards the edge of the Jelovica plateau, offering spectacular vistas of the valley below all the way from Bled to Radovljica. On the other side, your gaze will travel across the Triglav mountain range, the Karavanke and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Here, on the very edge of the plain, you will find a well-stocked hunting lodge which is a much liked tourist stop. The hike starts at the bridge across the Sava Bohinjka (Selo Bridge) and takes you over the meadows at the foot of the Jelovica plateau and steeply uphill to Tolsti vrh. In most part, the route follows rutted old horse-cart tracks and requires strong hiking footwear. From Tolsti vrh the trail starts to descend towards the hunting lodge. After a well-earned rest and refreshment, follow the trail down the slope to Ribno Bridge and then along the left bank of the Sava Bohinjka back to Selo. If you wish, you can take the road through Ribno and return to Bled on foot.

You can begin your hike to Talež at Bodešče Bridge spanning the Sava Bohinjka. After crossing the bridge turn left into a forest road that is occasionally used for timber skidding. Moderate sloping makes this route easier than the trails from Selo or Ribno, but strong hiking boots are needed. Just before you reach the plain of Talež, the trail merges with the path coming up from Ribno Bridge. On the plain the trail forks; the branch that runs straight ahead will take you across plains and pasturelands, whereas the right branch heads for the hunting lodge. Stop at the lodge for a well-earned rest and refreshment, and take a few photos of the valley below and the mountain ranges in the background. You can descend to the valley along the already mentioned trail to Ribno Bridge. From here, walk along the foot of Jelovica on the right bank of the Sava Bohinjka to the starting point at Bodešče Bridge. Alternatively, you can end your hike here and take the road through Ribno to Bled.

Ribenska gora is a hillock separating the grassy terraces of Ribno from the Sava Bohinjka. Its narrow and sparsely overgrown peak, unable to accommodate large groups of hikers, offers unobstructed views of the Karavanke to the north, and the towering peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps further east. To the west, your gaze wanders to Pokljuka and further on towards the Triglav mountain range, whereas the view to the south is dominated by the Jelovica plateau. If you direct your gaze over the Sava Bohinjka, you can see the hunting lodge on top of Talež, which is a popular destination for hikers. Equally unrestricted is the view of nearly all Bled villages down in the valley. Ribenska gora can be accessed by two access routes. Both start at the trail running from Hotel Ribno around Ribenska gora. You can head for the top from the event venue or from Hotel Ribno which is situated further down the southern slope of the hill. This is a typical walking path, surrounded by fields and meadows strewn with various field flowers, especially in June. When you reach Selo, descend the slope leading into the valley between the hills of Homec and Dobra gora. From here the path runs down to the pastures and the Sava Bohinjka. The river and the ponds, which are actually backwaters created when the river flow changed, will attract your attention with their rich flora and fauna. Head a bit back and pass the pastures towards Obroč hill, where the central wastewater treatment plant is located. Here you can either choose to go to the village Mlino by passing Obroč and Kozarca hills, or go around Obroč, past a small hydropower plant and through the hamlet of Zazer to get back to the lake. From here continue your walk along the lake shore towards the centre of Bled.

Opis poti / Trail description: Od Bleda do Ribnega nas preko polj Dindola pelje ozka asfaltirana cesta z malo prometa. A narrow asphalt road with not much traffic takes you from Bled to Ribno acroos the fields of Dindol. This route truly lets you enjoy the beauty of the fields and meadows flanking the road to Ribno, which is the centre of the local community as well as the parish of St Jacob. Upon reaching the village you can decide whether to proceed along Savska Street to the Sava Bohinjka, or walk past Hotel Ribno to the pond at Debela peč. Whichever route you take, take some time to look at the river and the pond, and then continue on the left bank of the Sava Bohinjka under the Ribenska gora hill and towards Selo Bridge. You leave the area of Ribenska gora at the point where Fric’s pond (Fricova mlaka) joins the river. This is where the Selo pasture known as Frate starts. Crossing it, you will get a fine view of the Selo village as well as the Dobra gora hill. From here head back to Bled, through Dindol, or take another route by turning left at the crossroads and returning to the Bled area via Mlino.

Bled is a good starting point for an interesting walk to Camping Šobec. Head from Ljubljanska Street into Koritenska Street, across the vast Jarše field stretching all the way to the village of Koritno. From Koritno turn right into the area taken up by village pastures and meadows dropping over two river terraces to reach the level of the Sava Bohinjka. The path features a few examples of marshes and headwaters, which are protected as important natural heritage sites. Soon you will reach the bridge across the Sava Dolinka and then arrive at Camping Šobec, one of Slovenia’s most beautiful capsites. To return to Bled, take the asphalt road from the capsite towards the regional road from Lesce to Bled. From here you can continue your walk on the cycle path connecting Lesce and Bled. Cross the Sava Dolinka by means of a cycle bridge and continue to Koritno, from where you can return to Bled via Jarše, or following the old road up the Betinj hill (Betinski klanec).

As was the case with other walks in this direction, head once again from Bled to Koritno by crossing the Jarše field. Upon reaching Koritno turn towards the lower part of the village called Polica and further to the area of communal village fields and meadows. The hikers taking this path will be rewarded with an enjoyable walk through the fields and meadows abounding in with greenery and bird songs coming from the edge of the forest, tree hedges and marshy patches. In the centre of this area you will cross a meadow called Sračja Noga (Magpie’s leg) and after that the path will take you to the Sava Dolinka bridge. Do not cross the bridge; instead, continue on the right bank of the river, cross the meadow V Svetju, walk across a small bridge and hike on the back part of the meadow towards the confluence of the Sava Bohinjka and Sava Dolinka rivers. Make a small detour here, to look at the confluence, and then return back to the path which will take you to Bodešče Bridge and across the Sava Bohinjka. At this point you will pass a steep climbing slope Na Pečeh and continue through Bodešče back to Koritno and then to Bled.

Pot nadaljujemo do mostu čez Savo Bohinjko. This path, which will lead you through three villages and circle back to your starting location, offers plenty of pleasures. As you leave Bled on Ljubljanska Street, walk across the Jarše field to Koritno and then forward to Bodešče. Turn into a small hamlet called Na Pečeh, where the church of St. Lenart awaits you with frescoes. Near the church climb a small hill called Gradišče, from which you will enjoy a nice view of the Jarše field, Bled and Mt. Triglav on the one side, and the Sava Bohinjka and the Jelovica plateau on the other. From there on continue on your way towards the bridge over the Sava Bohinjka. While on the bridge, a look back towards the hamlet reveals a small rock wall, which is popular with rock climbers. Since the basin of the Sava Bohinjka has to offer a number of beautiful sights and interesting views, head forward here, walking on the river’s right bank. The gravel path along the foot of the Jelovica plateau will take you Ribno Bridge. Cross it and return back to Bled either on the asphalt road through the village or on a footpath past Hotel Ribno.
