A GUIDE TO... ? LEAVING OF THINKING Many people at some point during their time at university consider leaving because they can’t cope. This could be for many reasons such as financial issues, home sickness, problems on or with your course, health issues or thinking you have just made the wrong choice in coming to university in the first place. A situation may arise where you feel that you have not been appropriately supported during your study, or that your qualification may be damaged through neglect by the University. In cases like this you have the right to complain to the University – this guide is designed as a basis to understanding whether you have grounds for a complaint and if so how to go about complaining.

Personal problems can be a major source of upset and people wanting to leave. The main worry is that their marks will suffer or they will not be able to dedicate the same amount of time to their studies as usual.

Are you homesick or not settling in very well? This is common, whether you are in your first few weeks or going into your last term. Come in and talk to someone in the Students’ Union, we can try and resolve any issues you have, and can point you in the direction of some social activities, clubs and societies that you may help you feel more at home.

For more information check out the welfare section on our website www.metsu.org or come in to the offices in Mount Pleasant and speak to your Welfare Officer and they can give you advice and support you.

ARE YOU HAVING TROUBLE KEEPING UP WITH YOUR STUDIES

University study can be very different from what you have experienced before and many students struggle at some point. The most important thing is not to let this build up, speak to your tutors and go to study skills (www.smu.ac.uk – current students and study support for full details) Don’t let your pride stop you from receiving all the support you can, it really makes such a difference and can totally change your experience.

Unhappy with where you are living? Nothing can be worse than living some where you are not happy, if you are living in halls then speak to Jonathan Bradley who runs all the accommodation for the university (he is situated in Townhill reception). If you are in rented accommodation the situation can be more complex but come straight into the SU and we can help you go through all your options and support you throughout everything.

Your Students’ Union is here for you! Your SU is here to provide you with the best student experience possible, if you are feeling like leaving at any point then please come into the offices at Mount Pleasant and we can give you confidential advice and guidance on the issues that are causing such distress. We really are here to support you so make sure before you make any huge decisions that you come and speak to us. You will be surprised how even small changes can make a big difference.
