After a long consideration by the Awards Committee, we have decided with a heavy heart to postpone the Blarney Chamber & District Business Awards 2021 to a later date. The current rising numbers of Covid infections has raised safety concerns and we are reluctant to hold an indoor event of the magnitude of the award ceremony, We will be monitoring the official announcements carefully and will decide in the New Year on a new date to celebrate the amazing nominees and winners of the business awards.

John Foley

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to nominate a business/person for this year's awards - it was heartwarming to see the support from so many people. Please stay safe

What do our members say? "Joining the chamber was one of the best decisions I have made. The depth of knowledge, love for local business and support available in the chamber pays back the fee in no time. Winning the Business Women of the Year in 2019 has given me the confidence that self-employed people working from home need from time to time."

“The Chamber is such a great way to meet other local businesses and help each other in so many ways”

"The Friday morning meetings allow me to network, touch base with the faces behind our local businesses and socialise all in one hour... and everyone at the end of a phone when needed!"

An interview with...

Bia Sásta

Elke O'Mahony

Q- Give us a quick description of your business Bia Sásta. Currently, I am working as an MS Excel trainer, business mentor for creatives and food start-ups, bespoke events (hopefully that can start again soon) and an adviser for social media and PR strategy for businesses.

Elke tells us about her Q-Who are the people behind your business and define each of your roles/ or if it’s just yourself tell us about your role. As a control freak, I prefer working alone but I couldn’t have done it without advice and support from some key people. Firstly, my husband who is great in encouraging me to follow my passion. Then I have to thank Jane Leonard of Really Useful for seeing the potential I had for training and mentoring and pushing me to get qualification in these areas – I think without her I wouldn’t be where I am today. The members in the Blarney & District Chamber are always there with tips and advice and their support.

07 | Blarney Business

Q-Where are you based? A - I work mostly from home and my clients are mainly in Cork, Blarney and the Ballyhoura area. Q-How long have you been involved in this work? A - I have worked in corporate most of my life but have always done other activities. I am very good at organising and planning and have always gotten great satisfaction from helping others. So, you can say that the foundation for my business today was laid in college. I started Bia Sásta officially in 2014 as I had success with food related events and wanted to take it to the next level. As with every good idea, other people jumped on the bandwagon, and it became more difficult to compete in a more saturated market. But funnily enough, over time clients and people I met were seeing abilities in me that I never thought of promoting. So, I LOCAL HERO

started to add social media strategy offerings – first to food businesses but later to a wider audience. In the meantime, I qualified as trainer and business coach and moved the business more and more in a new direction.

Q-Tell us about your offerings. A - Currently, I am working with a group of creatives to help them grow their business. I am lucky that Tara Prendegast who runs Bite the Biscuit saw something in me and asked me to come on board. Firstly, it is wonderful to see the talent we have in Ireland, and it is satisfying to see how each of them grows. Secondly, I give training in MS Excel & Word for a company near the airport. And I work with other companies giving training in social media for Business, PR, Time Management, Interview Skills and Mentoring. I am in the process of organising the 2021 Christmas Craft Fair and I am hopeful that I can organise some interesting events again in 2022

08 | Blarney Business

Q-What do you consider to be one of your works best features- what are you proud of? A - To see the ‘AHA!’ moment of people who I have worked with. I love sharing my expertise and experience and love it when it helps other people. I also write a food column for the Cork Independent and have to say that I love writing. Q- Highlights? A - Every single event, every single training session is a highlight. I love it when people go away and say that it was a great event etc. Q-What is the biggest challenge to your business since #Covid19? A - Obviously, it shattered my whole world. I am a people’s person and don’t really like online, but it has saved my bacon as they say. I looked at what I can do and offered online sessions and it worked. At the start of 2020 we (Judy Wilkins from Rising Sons and I) just launched a series of events called Match.Cork where we took beer and different foods to match. We had a great start with our Beer & Cheese matching night but had to cancel everything after that. Hopefully, we can rekindle the series in 2022. Q- Any funny anecdotes? A - Oh yes, many but one that still stands out: I am one of the founding members of IndieCork Film Festival. Within the festival I created the FilmFeast. We would show a food related film and offer food. I had hired some amazing food people to create a mini market. It was our first festival and my first film feast. I wasn’t able to sleep the night before as I

thought, no one would turn up. I was so worried having spent the money on the food, the producers and chefs being there and then no one to eat it. We started setting everything up and I kept thinking that it will be a disaster. But while we were still setting up, people started knocking on the door to come in. We were sold out and not a crumb of food was left. It was the most satisfying event I had ever done. I just love meeting people and it is great to see that people who have attended my events etc are almost friends. I met a woman a few weeks back who I have never met. She looked at me and said, your grandmother must have been an amazing woman (she was). When I looked slightly confused, she just said, ‘oh you write a lot about her, so I have the feeling that I know her’. And that happens quite a bit. I love that. Q-Any advice for Joe Public? A - When you know you are good at something and you enjoy it, say it (but back it up). Go for it.

09 | Blarney Business

Q-Any new ideas in the pipeline? A - Yes, my head is always spinning with ideas. So, currently I am organising this year’s Christmas Craft Fair (keep the 28th of November free) in Rathpeacon. I have gathered some amazing crafters and artists. But I also have plans for smaller events for 2022 which I am drawing up at the moment – not only food events but a lot of creativity as well. Q- How does Blarney Chamber membership help you/what do you like most about your local chamber? A - The support, especially for the Christmas fair, is amazing. It’s not only that members share their expertise and experience but practical help as well. I needed a specific cable to be able to run an online class. I ordered it but it wouldn’t arrive on time. I have to say that Marlene of SBG contacted me straight away after I asked the question and gave me one so that I was able to run the class. That’s just one example on how members support each other. Q- Anything else you’d like to add- offers etc? A - I am just coming out of the fog that is/was Covid. I need to brainstorm a bit and see where I am going with the business. A rebrand is in order as the business has changed so much. Watch this space.

Cllr Damian Boylan Contact details: Tel: 087 2244364 e-mail : including the upcoming Ireland v Portugal match on 11 November and the Ireland v New Zealand rugby match on 13 November.

It’s been a busy few months in the council with the focus being on the City Development Plan and the City Budget for 2022. The sheer number of meetings involved in both of these pursuits is huge, but we believe the budget is almost there and the over 435 submissions to the City Development Plan are currently being worked through and we will see the fruits of that in the coming weeks. Nationally there has been two interesting pieces of legislation passed, one for ticket touting, which is the bane of all sports and music fans and one for the protection of tips for hospitality workers. I put together some notes on both below. Anti-ticket touting legislation As of 28 October, the sale of tickets for all events in the Aviva stadium will be protected under antiticket tout legislation, prohibiting the resale of tickets above face value. Senator Garret Ahearn said the Aviva Stadium applied for venue designation and a letter was issued on Wednesday designating the venue with effect from Thursday 28 October, meaning that all matches and events which take place in the Aviva will be protected under the Fine Gael anti-ticket tout legislation,

Senator Ahearn said, “Earlier this week, I raised the fact that fans were being fleeced for the upcoming Ireland v Portugal game in the Aviva with tickets going for hundreds of Euro on Viagogo, due to the fact that the event organisers had not applied for event designation under the anti-ticket tout legislation. Tickets for the Ireland v New Zealand rugby match, also in the Aviva, go on sale tomorrow, and due to the likely popularity of the game, I called on the IRFU this morning to ensure they apply for the event to be designated under the anti-tout legislation before tickets went on sale. All fans attending matches and events in the Aviva from tomorrow onwards can be safe in the knowledge that the necessary legislation is in place to protect them from price gouging. As one of the largest venues in the country, today’s announcement ensures that thousands of supporters will never have to face extortionate prices when hoping to attend a concert, match, or live event in the Aviva again.” An Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said that on the Sale of Tickets bill, this is new legislation, it’s only just been enacted in the last couple of months. So, under the legislation, the initial onus is on the organiser or the host of the event, to designate it.The Tánaiste said that over the next couple of days, the Department will sit down with Croke Park, sit down with the Aviva, sit down with the major supporting bodies, FAI, GAA and IRFU, and suggest to them, or at least impress on them, the advantages of having those events designated - because we have three rugby internationals coming up, there’ll be other soccer internationals as well. He said Government wants to make sure that as many of them get designated as possible. The FAI have put that application in now – perhaps they should have done it sooner, perhaps we should have acted sooner. But this is 11 | Blarney Business

tew legislation, and those meetings are going to happen over the next couple of days. Law to protect employees’ tips Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar TD, has received Government approval to draft a law that will give new rights to employees, prohibiting the use of tips and gratuities to ‘make up’ contractual rates of pay. There will be new requirements on employers to clearly display their policy on how both card and cash tips, gratuities and service charges are distributed. All electronic tips must be distributed fairly and in a transparent way. The aim of the Payment of Wages (Amendment) (Tips and Gratuities) . The purpose of the Bill is to: Provide clarity on the meaning of tips, gratuities and service charges Place tips and gratuities, but not service charges, outside the scope of a person’s contractual wages Oblige employers to display prominently their policy on the distribution of both cash and card tips Oblige employers to distribute fairly, equitably and in a transparent manner, tips that are received in electronic form, that is, through debit or credit cards or smart phones  An important element of the new law will be to give employees a legal entitlement to receive tips and gratuities paid in electronic form (that is, by debit or credit card) with a provision that these tips and gratuities should be paid out to workers in a fair, transparent, and equitable manner. A fair and equitable distribution will be context specific and is likely to consider matters such as staff hours, busy and quiet periods, a worker’s role in service delivery, custom and practice etc.

Payment of tips and gratuities by electronic means, in contrast to cash tips that are paid directly to the worker, means that the employer is in control of how these tips and gratuities are distributed. The electronic record generated by this payment method will support and facilitate inspections by the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) in the event of a complaint being made. How cash tips are distributed will be required to be included in an employer’s publicly displayed policy on the management of tips and gratuities. This new law builds on the suite of legal rights that the Government is introducing to protect workers, which includes the Sick Leave Bill, the Transparent and Predictable Working Conditions Directive and the right to request remote work. This proposal had been commenced in 2019 but had fallen following the general election of February 2020. The Tánaiste said: “This new law will, for the first time, give workers legal protections over tips. It will mean that any tips received cannot be counted towards an employee’s basic pay, they must be counted as additional and separate. I know many people are sometimes unsure how or if tips and service charges are distributed when paying for a meal, for example, especially when paying by card or phone. Once this law is enacted, all employers will be required to show clearly how tips and service charges are dealt with in a business. This will provide clarity for both customers and staff. Most establishments already treat their employees fairly regarding tips, so for many it will mean no change other than having to display their policy clearly.” As always if I can be of assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact me and the very best of luck to all of the wonderful businesses in the area in the upcoming Business Awards. Meet Meet the the Members Members BIA SÁSTA Summer is a very quiet time for my business as people are on vacation or busy with their children. So, this time around, I also take time off, enjoying the feel of freedom and not to live with a time schedule. It is also the time, I am planning ahead for autumn/winter. As many businesses, mine has changed since the first lockdown and my focus has shifted to training & development rather than food events. So, I was delighted to have been asked to mentor a group of creatives which has been a revelation for me. I am currently working on training modules to help small businesses using Excel for most of their needs which will hopefully be launched early autumn. For now, I am hoping for an awesome summer.

TAXASSIST ACCOUNTANTS Businesses urged to check they still qualify for government supports. TaxAssist Accountants launches a free, complete, Covid support guide for SMEs. Business owners are being urged to make sure they are not missing out on government support still available to them with the next phase of the roadmap approaching fast. After frequent changes, some confusion around eligibility and when schemes will wind down has set in. TaxAssist Accountants, an accountancy network for SMEs, has launched a free, consolidated, guide that brings together all of the remaining supports, including their planned end dates. The document acts as a practical checklist for business owners who want to ask themselves; am I still getting all the supports I could be getting? Speaking about the guide, Terry O’Donovan of TaxAssist Accountants Blackpool said ‘The key thing to say is the support is there so don’t miss out. Business owners are busy re-establishing their businesses and they don’t have the time to spend online researching the latest updates from each government agency. Add to that the fact that some information on the internet is now out of date and you can see how there is confusion. If you want to see at a glance what might apply to you, how much you can get and how you go about applying step by step then this is the guide for you’. The guide is available to download for free online at and is available via TaxAssist’s app. TaxAssist’s dedicated COVID-19 hub is also updated weekly with new information.
