It’s good to know that our clients have been happy with us and referred us to friends and colleagues. We have also had several clients come back early this year to complete their accounts again. Q -Any advice for Joe Public? If setting up a new business, speak with an accountant at the beginning and have them involved from the start. It will help things run smoother in the long run. After this focus on your core business offering and leave your accountant look after the financial side of the business. Finally, file your tax returns as early as you can. Don’t leave it to the last minute.

Cllr Damian Boylan Contact details: Tel: 087 2244364 e-mail : excise duty decreases on mineral oil taxes with effect from 10 March. This provided for a 20 cent reduction in the excise rate for petrol and a 15 cent reduction on auto diesel, with a proportionate 2 cent reduction for the excise on Marked Gas Oil (green diesel). These measures were VAT inclusive and will last until 31 August 2022.

It was my pleasure to represent the Lord Mayor at the recent Blarney & District Chamber of Commerce business awards. My sincerest congratulations to all of the winners and it was notable that all recipients were female and it shows the depth and breadth of female talent that exists in our area. A wonderful, positive night of fun was had and my thanks to the committee and the chair John Foley for the invite. I will stick with some news that affects business and businesspeople this month. Cost of living The Government is very aware of the severity of the financial impact that rising prices in energy and fuels are placing on Irish businesses and households. The current trends in energy prices are not unique to Ireland and are in fact, part of global trends. Taxation of energy products is not what’s driving current energy prices. The comprehensive response of Government to the energy crisis and in other areas will soon begin to have a positive effect. Government response to Increased Energy Costs The Government brought a Financial Resolution into the Oireachtas providing for

In terms of revenue impacts, the six month decrease in mineral oil tax is estimated to cost €320 million. On 11 April the Government announced further energy-related measures to reduce the rate of VAT on the supply of gas and electricity on a temporary basis from 1 May to end October. This will cost an estimated €46m. In addition, the Government has extended the period of the reduced rates of excise duty on petrol, diesel and MGO to Budget Day, costing an estimated €80m. In putting these reductions in place, the Government had to take account of the restrictions of the EU Excise and VAT Directives. The combined effect of the measures in respect of the 15 cent reduction in excise on diesel, along with the scheduled 1 cent reduction to offset the biofuel obligation scheme increase and the Diesel Rebate Scheme meant that any further excise reduction would bring the effective rate below the minimum permissible rate. Ireland previously relied on a historical derogation to provide a reduced rate of 13.5% to gas and electricity. Any change to the VAT rate would have removed that historical derogation. However on 6 April 2022 an amendment to the VAT Directive came into force which has given greater flexibility to Member States to change VAT rates applying to gas and electricity. The VAT and excise measures are in addition to measures introduced in Budget 2022 that included a personal income tax package worth €520 million for this year alongside a social welfare package of over €550 million. It must also be seen in the context of the additional package of measures to the value of over €500m introduced in February that included: an increase in the energy credit to €200 including 37 | Blarney Business

VAT, estimated to impact just over 2 million households (to be paid in April) a lump sum payment of €125 on the fuel allowance will be paid in early March to 390,000 recipients to reduce the burden on people returning to the workplace and people using public transport, there will be a temporary reduction in fares of 20% from the end of April to the end of the year. This will impact approximately 800,000 daily users the original Sláintecare report proposed a reduction of the Drug Payment Scheme from €144 to €100. The government has decided to reduce this further to €80. This will benefit just over 70,000 families the working family payment budget increase announced on Budget Day will be brought forward from 1 June to 1 April reduced caps for multiple children on school transport fees to €500 per family post primary and €150 for primary school children

Local Enterprise Office LEO (021-4961828) Restart Grants: Business Supports:

The comprehensive response of Government to the energy crisis and in other areas will soon begin to have a positive effect. While this happens, we cannot compromise the progress we have made on implementing the climate policies which are critical to ensuring we reduce emissions and mitigate climate change impacts. There is no doubt that we live in uncertain times and that they are very stressful for all in business. If there are ideas that you think the government could implement to help business at this time, please don’t hesitate to contact me on and I will gladly pass those on to the relevant Minister for consideration. As always if there is something you feel I can help with please let me know and I will always try my best for you.

Meet the Members BIA SÁSTA The end of the year always gets us thinking of the months that have passed and what worked, what didn’t, what we learned and how we can do things better. I am currently working with a group of creatives and I have learned as much from them as they have from me. 2021 has been as weird as 2020 was but thankfully, I was a lot busier and got used to the online mentoring and teaching. Although busy, business has changed. I concentrated more on the mentoring side, helping start-up businesses to get business plans done etc. and discovered how much I enjoy teaching and sharing my experience. I am looking forward to times when I can start the food event side of the business – at least to a limited capacity as the

new side is just too exciting to stop. Wishing all my clients – new and old – a wonderful Christmas time and the very best for a better 2022. "Joining the chamber was one of the best decisions I have made. The depth of knowledge, love for local business and support available in the chamber pays back the fee in no time. Winning the Business Women of the Year in 2019 has given me the confidence that self-employed people working from home need from time to time."

Meet the Members FINDINGS I opened Findings as a Pop-up Shop in the Summer of this 2021 to sell Art, Jewellery and Crafts which I design. Everything is original and made in our in-store workshop. The pop-up was in effect a trial run. I wanted to hone my products and to see if there was a commercially viable business. I figured if the business could survive in the current climate then it would have a good chance of a future. Findings is still here (thanks to all my lovely customers) and busy coming up to Christmas, especially fulfilling orders for the personalised Music, Dance and Heart ranges of pictures and orders for bespoke jewellery. After a post-Christmas Break, the shop will reopen as ‘Findings on the Square’ with our range extended to children’s books and toys.
