What do our members say? "Becoming a member of the Blarney & District Chamber of Commerce when I moved to the area 8 years ago was an excellent way to integrate into the business community and to make friends. I love being part of a group of likeminded people and enjoy the weekly meetings we have had pre-Covid."

"Becoming a member of the Blarney & District Chamber of Commerce has helped us to get to know other businesses in the area while also helping to promote the economic and tourist development of Blarney and supporting local employment."

“Most important is the support I have received and the connections I have made while a member of the Chamber, regularly doing business with a huge variety of product and service provider members, and those members regularly doing business with me.”

An interview with... Q- Give us a quick description of your business. A- As a web designer I'm passionate about creating engaging websites and take a keen personal interest in helping promote each of my clients. My unique selling points are the personal touch and simplifying the website process. I love working with small businesses. Some of my favourite types are: Food-related: The Square Table Eat ‘n IT The Castle Hotel BiaBiz Music-related: Meghan Ali Youngstars Music School Health-related: Blarney Wellness Centre Bethan O’Riordan Psychotherapy & Parenting Mindfulness Midwest Norton Therapy Pharmacy First Plus The Sound Chef Temple Yoga & Meditation Cork Therapy Centre Joyce Wolfe Physio Beauty: Coachford Hair & Beauty Beauty by Katrina

Q-How long have you been involved in creating websites? A-Since 2007, shortly after I started my virtual assistance business and began doing work for a web designer. I learned a lot and started creating sites on my own. In 2012 when I moved back to Ireland from Chicago I stopped doing virtual assistance and focused on websites. But my interest in coding started long before then, when I worked for American Express writing scripts for relational databases, though that was only a side part of my job. Q- Tell us about your website offerings. A- I create websites in WordPress for small businesses and I provide ongoing website maintenance, updating WordPress and all the website components and giving the business owners time to focus on what they do best. Q-What do you consider to be one of The Website Chef’s best features what are you proud of?

A- When a client tells me (or someone else) that they’re glad I’ve got their back as far as their website goes, it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. As a small business owner myself I know how hard it can be to try and do everything yourself. I also love it when a new client says that the process of creating their website was easier than they expected.

Q-The Website Chef highlights? A- Last year I built 11 websites, did major updates to 4 sites and had 4 more sites almost completed by the end of the year which were launched in the past two months. Q-What is the biggest challenge to your business since #Covid19? A- Keeping my sanity! Seriously, I work from home so not getting out and meeting people has been a challenge. Zoom is helpful but doesn’t quite cut it. That, and not liking to say no to people who want their websites upgraded so they can continue their business during COVID. I’m delighted to have the work but if I could have cloned myself last year it would have helped. This year I’ve actually turned people away because I can only do so much and my sanity is more important to me than anything else.

07 | Blarney Business

Q-Any advice for business owners when considering starting a website? A- Talk to your web designer early in the process. I often end up advising business owners, especially new businesses, about logos, colours, and other business details. Don’t delay and don’t assume a web designer will be free to start your project immediately. It takes 6 to 8 weeks on average to create a website. I’m usually booked two to three months in advance. Q-Any new ideas in the pipeline? A- I’m working on a new website for my own business and I’m excited to be hiring a copywriter to write the content. I find it easier to talk about other people’s business than my own and writing is not my skillset. I’m also working with a graphic artist to redo graphics for my business and the website. I’m also creating a new website for one of my hobbies – Sue’s Dead Folk – my genealogy site.

Q- How does Blarney Chamber membership help you/what do you like most about your local chamber?

Recent Projects:

A- Apart from being a steady source of work and referrals, the connections I’ve found with people who have become friends as well as knowing where to go to solve a problem is a huge benefit. With a growing group the resources keep expanding. It’s also nice to be part of a community. It’s a friendly group of people who are supportive and helpful. The benefits far outweigh the cost of membership and time to attend meetings. trajectory in terms of falling cases and reduced pressure on our hospitals, consideration will be given to some limited changes on April 5th. No further easing of restrictions will be considered beyond that until the end of April or early May. There will be tougher controls on people entering and leaving the state including a ban on non-essential travel, a requirement to produce evidence of a negative PCR test on arrival, mandatory home or hotel quarantine of 5 to 10 days or more depending on country of origin. All of these measures are now currently in place with the exception of hotel quarantine which will be within weeks. All financial supports for individuals, families and businesses adversely affected by the pandemic have been extended until June 30th. These include the PUP, EWSS, CRSS and commercial rates holiday.

COVID-19 Resilience and Recovery 2021-The Path Ahead – An Update I’m sure some parents will be breathing a sigh of relief to hear that March is about re-opening schools, pre-schools, childcare and resuming routine healthcare safely. This involves quite a lot of additional movement and interaction. NPHET has advised and the Government agrees that any further relaxation of restrictions at the same time would be too risky and could jeopardise the safe reopening of education. We should be proud of the Irish people for the work they are doing to supress the virus by staying home and minimising in person contact with other people. We are all beyond grateful to healthcare staff and other essential workers who are keeping the country running. The vaccine programme will be accelerated in March and April. Roughly 100k vaccines will be administered per week in March rising to 200-300k a week in April. There will be a renewed focus on better ventilation, rapid antigen testing and test/trace/isolate. In the run up to Easter, if we continue the current

An additional €10 million in funding was made available for increased mental health services, and a further topup of €10 million was made available to the Stability Fund for Community and Voluntary Organisations to enable critical services to continue being delivered to vulnerable groups. Return to School Yesterday Monday 1 March the first four classes at primary level – junior and senior infants, first and second class – and final year Leaving Certificate students returned to in-person learning. This phase will also see a return to full attendance for children in special schools. There will be a period between each phase to assess the impact of reopening on aspects of community transmission with Monday 15 March the target date for the return to in-person learning of third to sixth class students at primary level, and fifth year Leaving Certificate students. Monday 12 April, following the Easter break is the target date for the return to in-person learning of first to fourth year students at post-primary level. This phase (March 1st) is in addition to the previous staged reopening which saw special schools reopen on February 11th on a 09 | Blarney Business

c50% attendance basis. All special lasses returned to inperson learning on a full-time basis from February 22nd, and this plan will see special schools return to full-time inperson education from March 1st. International Travel As of now, the advice remains there should be no nonessential travel in or out of the country. It is not possible at this moment to predict the public health situation in a variety of destinations in summer. We must continue to be cautious considering the transmissibility of new variants of COVID-19.The rollout of the vaccination programme will give the government more options as the country heads into the summer months if the incidence of the disease continues to decline. The decisions on future re-opening of sectors like Irish tourism will be made in future reviews of The Path Ahead plan. It is not yet understood whether available vaccines prevent vaccinated persons from being infected or transmitting the disease to others. As such, the impact vaccinations will have on travel policies internationally is yet to be determined. The current mandatory testing and quarantine requirements are provided for by SI No.44/2021 which does not provide exemptions for vaccinated persons. The Government considers travel policy informed by the epidemiological situation internationally and by public health advice. A lot of people are talking about Vaccine Passports, not least the Airline industry and below I have some information on those. Cllr Damian Boylan Contact details: Tel: 087 2244364 e-mail : damianboylan@live.com Vaccine Certificates (versus Passports) It is important to differentiate between a vaccine certificate, the purpose of which is to identify and monitor people who have been vaccinated, with “an immunity passport” which exempts people from public health measures on the basis that the person is purportedly immune to SARS-CoV-2. Vaccine certificates are required to keep track of which vaccine (including which batch of a vaccine) has been given to a person and on which dates. This allows for follow up and monitoring of any adverse events. In contrast, “vaccine passports” are problematic on several grounds and the WHO and ECDC have advised against their introduction at this time. It is premature to discuss “immunity passports” due to the many uncertainties that still exist regarding how long vaccine mediated immunity is likely to last, which is further compounded by the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern. “Vaccine passports” also raise issues regarding potential discrimination and stigmatisation of those who have yet to be vaccinated or who cannot or choose not to be vaccinated. So, we are getting there. It has been slow progress and without doubt there has been disappointing times. The roll out of the vaccine, the return to school, the hope of longer warmer days to come and the belief that there is light at the end of the tunnel is creeping in. I know that people are jaded tired, but we have done so well and achieved so much, we’re almost there. If there is anything I can do for you please don’t hesitate to contact me. Ward Funds continue to be available for community groups so please let me know if you need a small grant to do a project. Just email me on damian_boylan@corkcity.ie and put Ward Funds into the subject line. Take care and talk soon.

At first I was sceptical that it would not work out, especially for my 7year old learning piano for the first time, but once we put a bit of effort into getting the video to face the keyboard and my daughter, it has all worked out perfectly. We have both piano and vocal coaching lessons online, and the kids look forward to seeing their lovely teachers each week. It's lovely to hear the giggles during the lessons from another room at home! I am so grateful to Youngstars for being so flexible and making sure our music passions have stayed strong this year.” Niamh
