ABOUT THE CHAMBER

04| Blarney Business

Q- Give us a quick description of your business. A- I’m a clinical and orthopaedic reflexologist as well as a yoga & meditation teacher for children and adults.

Pat Murphy Blarney Wellness Centre

I also run a crafting business called ‘Blarney Artsy Craftsy’. Q- How long have you been involved in your career path? A- I began the meandering journey to where I am now in 1998, when I started a classical reflexology course. At the time I was firmly entrenched in a career in sales, retail and window dressing which I thoroughly enjoyed because I was working with people and utilizing my love of crafting and design which would become extremely important this year. I upskilled my qualifications to add other modalities throughout. I finally decided to work for myself after the premature birth of our second child 12 years ago and I’ve never regretted it

Q-Tell us about your Blarney Wellness Centre/Baby Toes to Big Toes offerings:

Pat Murphy

Pat tells us about her wellness business.

A- I treat people of all ages using Clinical reflexology Reiki energy therapy Indian head massage Sports cupping I also work with couple’s fertility issues I teach parents baby reflexology & massage I teach yoga via Skype at present to my lovely regular clients. I’m really looking forward to teaching “in person” yoga and meditation classes again next year. There is nothing like a live class!

LOCAL HERO

06 | Blarney Business

Q-What do you consider to be one of Blarney Wellness Centre/ Baby Toes to Big Toes best offerings- what are you proud of? A-I’m particularly proud of 4 of my offerings Stress Melt Therapy - which is a divine combination of Indian head massage, Japanese facial massage and foot reflexology. Crystal facial massage is so soothing that it promises a reduction of fine lines and high pigmentation as well as working on powerful reflexology points. 5 years ago I developed the ‘Little Hearts Yoga & Meditation Programme’ for parents and playschools. My regular stint teaching yoga to students at our local secondary school is also deeply rewarding. Q- Any funny anecdotes? A- The one that really springs to mind is when an elderly neighbour misunderstood my “foot treatments for chiropody and wondered where my “blades were. Q-What is the biggest challenge to your business since #Covid19? A-Being forced to close my business in March and then again in September was deeply stressful for several reasons, I view what I do as essential to people’s emotional and physical wellbeing and of course there’s the empowerment of selfemployment. Having that removed was distressing.

LOCAL HERO

On a positive note, I’ve been very busy since reopening and I’ve no doubt that 2021 will bring more positivity. Q-Any advice for Joe Public regarding the importance of caring for our mental health during Covid 19? A-There is nothing more powerful than deep mindful breathing. The breath can transform your mood from low to fabulous in minutes. Our diaphragm is a muscle and as with any muscle it responds beautifully to exercise. Exercising your diaphragm is simple. Sit down, place your hands on your tummy and take a long slow breath into your lungs and observe your tummy as it enlarges, then breathe out even more slowly as your tummy deflates, breathe in inflate, breathe out deflate. I promise that it works and if you don’t have 5 minutes then take 10!! đ&#x;˜ Q- Any advice for Joe Public regarding looking out for our children’s mental health & wellbeing? A- Movement and practicing deep breathing as above can be transformative as can creating something deeply personal such as a piece of art, baking and cooking. Our 3 children are all very different, but they all enjoy different activities and are all creative.

Q- How does Blarney Chamber membership help you/what do you like most about your local chamber? A- Being a member of Blarney and District Chamber of Commerce means I have access to support and of course the lifeblood of business- referrals.

Contact Details: Pat Murphy https://blarneywellnesscentre.ie/ 087-9721149 Email: reflexologyathome@icloud.com https://www.facebook.com/Babytoestobi gtoescork/ https://www.facebook.com/woollybagsan dotherbitsblarney/

Q-Any new ideas in the pipeline? A-I’m planning to grow my crafting business in 2021 to create a bespoke range of crochet home-wears, to set up adult’s hand-sewing classes and to continue with my children’s sewing and yoga camps. The only limit is one’s imagination.

Cllr Damian Boylan WORDS FROM OUR LOCAL COUNCILLOR

Brexit Rather than speak about Covid, for which the new restrictions are still being decided I decided to share some information on Brexit, the steps the Government have taken and some of the ramifications for people and business. The EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement, together with the Withdrawal Agreement, including the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland, means that Ireland’s key objectives in the Brexit process have been achieved, in particular protection of the Good Friday Agreement and the gains of the peace process, including avoiding a hard border on the island of Ireland; Ensuring the best possible outcome for trade and the economy, notably tariff and quota free trade with the UK and protection of Ireland’s place in the Single Market; It creates a new stable relationship with the UK for the Irish transport and energy sectors and ensures cooperation between police services on these islands continues. The Government has put substantial time and resources into preparing for Brexit. We have however been very clear all along that even with an EU-UK deal in place, the seamless trading environment we had become accustomed to would not continue. The UK’s decision to leave the EU, the Single Market and Customs Union means that operators must engage with a range of checks and controls on their trade with the UK that did not previously apply. Government preparedness The Government has been working to prepare for Brexit for several years – with intensive effort across many Departments and Agencies, including legislation, supports for business and other sectors, stakeholder outreach and widespread public communications to promote readiness. We have also made substantial investment in infrastructure, systems and staffing at Dublin Airport, Dublin Port and Rosslare Port. Our total Brexit related expenditure, since the UK referendum on EU membership, is now over €1bn.

Budget 2021 also provided for additional staff for Departments and Agencies, including the Revenue Commissioners, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and the HSE, to support and carry out checks and controls, bringing the total additional staffing provision, as a result of Brexit, to around 1,500. New/additional direct ferry links with increased capacity including to Cherbourg, Dunkerque, Zeebrugge and Santander. Ports, Checks & Controls So far there have been no delays in Dublin or Rosslare ports and the State’s facilities are operational. Those who have been stopped have been cleared quickly. However, the first few days of the year are traditionally a quiet time for freight traffic and volumes are low now. We expect volumes to begin to rise in the coming week and return to normal levels. There are a range of customs and regulatory controls at EU and UK ports. This is because the UK has also left the Single Market and Customs Union and checks are required to protect public health food safety and the integrity of the Single Market. There will be delays at Ports but these can be mitigated by drivers and hauliers ensuring that all of their documentation is completed ahead of time.

08 | Blarney Business

Cllr Damian Boylan WORDS FROM OUR LOCAL COUNCILLOR

The Protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland means that these new checks and controls do not apply to NorthSouth trade on this island. Goods moving to/from Northern Ireland to/from Great Britain via Dublin Port will be subject to customs checks. They can either (i) move under a customs transit procedure, or (ii) be treated as an import and customs cleared in Dublin. If SPS goods are included in the load, full import SPS controls must be conducted at the point of arrival. Revenue, Agriculture and HSE all have 24-hour operations in Dublin Port. Officials are working to clear all the consignments that have been called for controls documentary checks as quickly as possible. Drivers are urged to check their customs channel about 30 minutes before docking in the port. Once they do this they will know exactly where to go on arrival and this will speed up their exit out of the port. Government continues to advise traders to consider switching to direct route options. Government is closely monitoring developments, and meeting regularly with stakeholders, to ensure we manage these impacts of Brexit over this initial period. Supply Chain/Food shortages The introduction of new import and export regulatory requirements alongside new checks and controls on trade between the EU and UK, excluding Northern Ireland, may lead to initial disruption in some supply chains. We have been working closely with business including the major retailers and there is no reason to expect any significant shortages in shops.

Cllr Damian Boylan Contact details: Tel: 087 2244364 e-mail : damianboylan@live.com Impact on people Online shoppers will need to be mindful that when buying from a UK based website they may incur additional costs, and that their current EU consumer rights will no longer automatically apply. Consumers should carefully check the terms and conditions of the individual UK website they are purchasing from to determine its returns policy. UK licence holders resident in this jurisdiction will for all intent and purpose be driving without a licence. A normal pre-requisite of a motor Insurance policy is possession of a valid driving licence. Arrangements are in place for you to exchange your UK licence for an Irish one. Anyone travelling from the UK with their pet will be subject to new rules Business & Ag supports A range of loan and grant schemes have been established by Government to help support businesses get ready for Brexit, including the Brexit Loan Scheme and the Be Prepared and Ready for Customs Grants. Budget 2021 allocated €340 million for Brexit related supports and also provided for a €3.4bn Recovery Fund as a contingency to help deal with further responses to COVID-19 and Brexit as needed. New €100m scheme to help agri-food sector adapt. Government will continue to work with industry to respond to Brexit impacts in the months ahead.

Local Enterprise Office LEO (021-4961828) Restart Grants: www.corkcity.ie Business Supports: www.dbei.gov.ie

The EU’s Brexit Adjustment Reserve of €5bn will also be available and Ireland will be working to secure a fair share of that to support our response to the economic impacts of Brexit, including for the fishing sector.

YOUNGSTARS MUSIC SCHOOL ANNA MITCHELL

Youngstars Music School has paused our in-person lessons for now but we are working so well with our online lessons. We are looking forward to opening our doors again soon.

Online Lessons: Online music lessons are a great option at Youngstars. We use the Zoom app to carry out our lessons online. We send you a link to join us in advance of your lesson and your lesson operates in much the same way as it would if you were in class! We can share music on the screen for you to see and also make a recording of your lesson so you have a full video reference for later! You will need to have the Zoom app downloaded on your device with the screen positioned so that we can see you and your instrument clearly. If you are interested in online lessons we can go through the simple set up process with you before your lesson. It's really simple and works really well if you have the right set up.

www.youngstarsmusicschool.com "As a new business owner the chamber is a wonderful outlet to meet people who have experience in business and who can offer support and lend an ear in times of need. We all look forward to our weekly Friday coffees and scones. "

Here is what one of our parents has to say about our lessons online: "We chose to try out all our Youngstars lessons online last term, due to Covid, and we are delighted with the result. At first I was sceptical that it would not work out, especially for my 7year old learning piano for the first time, but once we put a bit of effort into getting the video to face the keyboard and my daughter, it has all worked out perfectly. We have both piano and vocal coaching lessons online, and the kids look forward to seeing their lovely teachers each week. It's lovely to hear the giggles during the lessons from another room at home! I am so grateful to Youngstars for being so flexible and making sure our music passions have stayed strong this year" Niamh

Here is to 2021 with all its hopes and opportunities. Wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas.

We’ve built our own alternative broadband network which has grown over the years to cover thousands of customers over thousands of square kilometers of Ireland. Using both fibre and fixed wireless technology, we provide broadband to both urban and rural areas, where others can’t.

We’ve been doing this since 2004 and every one of our team loves coming to work in the morning. We started out small but have grown rapidly into a trusted and established ISP – through giving the absolute best customer service and products out there. We are trusted by all types of users – from residential to SME to multinational – to provide reliable connectivity services, day in, day out with the absolute best in customer service and technical support.

www.novatelecom.ie/

We have years of experience in fibre and licensed microwave networks offering a full range of business communications services over our national IP/MPLS network. Our services can be used for primary connectivity or diversity and offer huge bandwidth with speeds up to 10Gbps and symmetric services available. We have unbeatable reach nationally via carrier fibre networks and our extensive network of microwave tower sites.
