An interview with...

Q - Give us a quick description of your business.

Sue Pamment

I build websites for small businesses. I walk you through the website process making it as easy and painless as possible. I create sites in WordPress and give you instructions for updating it yourself and I provide on-going maintenance for those who don’t want to get involved with the nuts and bolts of their site. Q -Who are the people behind your business and define each of your roles/ or if it’s just yourself tell us about your role. I work alone because I love the direct contact I have with my clients. I enjoy building relationships that will last and I have several clients for whom I have re-done their websites as their businesses have grown over time.

09 | Blarney Business

Q -Where are you based? I’m based in Cork but have clients in other parts of Ireland, the UK, Spain and around the U.S. Most of my work is conducted by Zoom calls and emails and I have many clients whom I’ve never met in person but we have built solid working relationships regardless of proximity. Q -How long have you been involved in this work? I been building websites for over 15 years. Over time I’ve refined what I do and have learned a lot of new skills. Now I can pick and choose who to work with and I love the diversity of businesses among my clientele. Q -Tell us about your offerings. I build simple small business sites, e-commerce sites and booking systems. The following is a list of industries I’ve worked with which is constantly evolving: hospitality music trades retail health & wellness business services home & garden beauty & personal services I also offer on-going maintenance as referenced above. This involves daily monitoring of your site should you have any issues and I provide monthly reports showing traffic to the site. Many business owners think once their site is built they don’t have to do any more with it but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In these days of cyber security issues it’s critical to keep an eye on your site and to have adequate security protecting it. I monitor my clients’ sites and have alerts set up in case a site goes offline.

and resources to get right, which is why they start from around 3,000 euros. Q -What do you consider to be one of your works best features- what are you proud of? According to client testimonials, my hands-on approach and responsiveness to my clients are the best features of my business. I am most proud of the repeat business I get from my clients and that all my work comes from referrals or networking. Highlights for me have been the appreciation I receive from clients when they’re happy with their site. I received a thank you note from a client in December who thanked me for being me. That meant a lot. Q -What is the biggest challenge to your business since #Covid19? Time. If I could have cloned myself three times over I might still not have had enough time to satisfy all the requests that came my way since Covid19 began. I didn’t like having to turn people away. I’m not complaining. My business grew 20% over the past two years.

Simple, small brochure websites start at 1,800 euros and can increase, depending on requirements. Ecommerce websites usually involve a lot more time LOCAL HERO

Q -Any advice for Joe Public? When contemplating a new website for your business, especially start-ups, talk to your web designer early on and share your ideas. You can save yourself time and money. Don’t underestimate the time it takes to create a website. Allow six to eight weeks minimum once work begins and if you want to be website ready within that timeframe, be ready to meet your deadlines for forwarding the required information as and when it is needed by the developer. Clients often bounce ideas off me that aren’t even websiterelated so I become an integral part of their team. Your web designer may well be able to refer you to graphic designers and copywriters so don’t be shy about asking. I’m creating great working relationships with graphic designers and writers for that very purpose. Give your web designer as much information about your business as is relevant and keep them informed of changes. A client wondered why they weren’t getting emails and was ready to get rid of their website because it wasn’t doing what they wanted until it transpired that they had changed their email address and not informed me so that I could update their website. Q -Any new ideas in the pipeline? Funnily enough, the new ideas are to find more of a work/life balance! I enjoy my work immensely but don’t want it to consume me. I have so many clients bringing work for this year that I am booked up until May already.

Q - Anything else you’d like to add? I am always available to have a chat with someone who is contemplating starting a website, especially startups. Even if they don’t work with me it can be beneficial to have a chat. Q - How does Blarney Chamber membership help you/what do you like most about your local chamber? The Blarney Chamber has provided a rich bank of advisors, support and referrals over the nine years I’ve been a member. I enjoy being a part of the community they offer and have formed some very strong friendships from people I’ve met there not to mention the ongoing business referrals. They’ve helped me to grow as a person and a business. I'm honoured to have been elected as Secretary this year. It’s important to get involved in some form of networking, not just for the business referrals but also for connection on a deeper level. I find that you get what you give and consistency is key. Everyone has seen the cost-of-living rise and as such are rightfully looking to Government for some measures to help those who need it. In good news the exchequer figures are very good and the country is in a good place financially. I have also put in some news around the Leaving Cert exams for this year and the report on the Pension Age for the State Pension. Reducing the cost of living At a recent parliamentary party meeting, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said the cost of living must be reduced and work is underway to look at potentially reducing some Government fees and charges. He said the €210m scheme (€100 credit for 2.1million domestic electricity customers) was not enough. He noted with rising inflation and higher prices, more needs to be done to help families and the Government would respond to and do this. The meeting heard work was underway to reduce the cost of living with Ministers. Strong momentum in tax receipts continues into the start of this year €6bn in spending underpins public services and economic recovery

Cllr Damian Boylan Contact details: Tel: 087 2244364 e-mail : Exchequer figures published on Wednesday show that tax revenues in January were €6.7 billion, 24 per cent higher than last year and 13 per cent higher than January 2020; January is a very important month for tax receipts (it is generally the largest month of the year for VAT receipts as it covers the Christmas trading period); VAT receipts were very strong at €3.1 billion, 32 per cent higher than January 2021 although the annual comparison is distorted due to the introduction of public health restrictions in late2020; VAT receipts were up 15 per cent compared to the same period in 2020; Income tax receipts remain robust at €2.6 billion in January, up 13 per cent on an annual basis and 18 per cent relative to the pre-pandemic position in January 2020; Total gross voted expenditure in January amounted to almost €6.0 billion, €0.3 billion or 5 per cent below the same period in 2021 but 6 per cent ahead of January 2020; An Exchequer surplus of €2.2 billion was recorded in January. However, this figure is inflated by VAT revenues in January, which will not be repeated in February. The 12-month rolling Exchequer deficit – a better measure of underlying trends - stood at €6.4 billion in January. Recommendation that State Pension age should remain at 66 The Joint Committee on Social Protection, Community and Rural Development and the Islands has published its report in response to the final report published by the Commission on Pensions.

15 | Blarney Business

The Committee’s report is also published in response to a request from Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys who previously asked the Committee to consider the report and provide its views. The Pension Commission’s report has stated that the current State Pension is not sustainable in its current form and changes are needed. The Committee recommends that the current pension age be retained. In total, the Committee has made 13 recommendations in response to the Report of the Commission on Pensions with the aim of ensuring the sustainable provision of the State Pension into the future. During its examination of the issue, the Committee engaged with several individuals and organisations including the Department of Social Protection, the Commission on Pensions, Age Action, the Economic and Social Research Institute, Family Carers Ireland, SIPTU and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions Some of the Committee’s key recommendations: The qualifying age for the State pension should remain at age 66; Legislation should be developed to ban the use of mandatory retirement clauses in existing as well as new employment contracts. The proposal to move workers over the age of 66 to Class K PRSI is rejected; Changes to Employers’ PRSI contribution rates should be examined by the Commission on Welfare and Taxation to determine the fairest way to increase Employers’ PRSI contribution rates. The cap on credited contributions should be eliminated in view of the importance of nurturing and caring work in our society. Leaving Cert 2022 Government has decided to operate an examinations only approach for Leaving Certificate

in 2022, with significant further adjustments; To make further significant changes to the examinations themselves; To provide students with a commitment that the overall results of Leaving Certificate 2022 will not be lower than in 2021. The decision, which was communicated to members of the advisory group after a meeting of cabinet, seeks to address the concerns for students as to: How we can best address the lost in-class tuition time experienced by the students as both they and their teachers were absent for Covid reasons; and, How can we ensure students feel, and actually are, treated fairly and equitably when compared to the class of 2021. Junior Cycle examinations did not run in 2020 or 2021 for Covid-related reasons, on the advice of Public Health. The Junior Cycle summer examinations will go ahead this year as planned.Planning for the 2022 examinations has been underway by the Department of Education and the State Examinations Commission for some time. In similar fashion to 2020 and 2021, this work has been assisted by an advisory group of key stakeholders which has met on a number of occasions. The decision to make the extensive changes to the examination papers, on top of changes announced in August 2021, has been taken to provide the Leaving Certificate students of 2022 with the fairest method of assessing their learning and attainment at the end of their post-primary education and enabling them to progress to further and higher education and training, apprenticeships and the world of work. The further extensive changes to the papers means that candidates have greater choice, less questions to answer and still have the same amount of time as in a normal year to complete the examination. The Minister for Education stated that she has put in place measures to ensure that the overall set of results in the aggregate for this year will be no lower than last year. This

16 | Blarney Business

means that the class of 2022 will not be disadvantaged compared to the class of 2020 or 2021. The Minster and her Department are confident that the decision to put in place these significant changes to the examinations, is the fairest one for students. Over the coming days, the Department and the SEC will provide the technical detail on the changes that are being made to the papers to schools and students. They will also be maintaining the previously announced steps to maximise tuition time for students by, for example, holding the Leaving Certificate language orals during the Easter holidays – as announced in December. I know the cost-of-living issues is affecting people but I do believe that this is a temporary issue and that the Government will take steps to help. On a final note I do have my ward fund grants for 2022 available and would ask groups interested to email me on to register interest. The maximum grant I can award is €500 but this sum can be of great help to smaller organisations and I am delighted to be able to help.

Meet the Members BIA SÁSTA The end of the year always gets us thinking of the months that have passed and what worked, what didn’t, what we learned and how we can do things better. I am currently working with a group of creatives and I have learned as much from them as they have from me. 2021 has been as weird as 2020 was but thankfully, I was a lot busier and got used to the online mentoring and teaching. Although busy, business has changed. I concentrated more on the mentoring side, helping start-up businesses to get business plans done etc. and discovered how much I enjoy teaching and sharing my experience. I am looking forward to times when I can start the food event side of the business – at least to a limited capacity as the

new side is just too exciting to stop. Wishing all my clients – new and old – a wonderful Christmas time and the very best for a better 2022. "Joining the chamber was one of the best decisions I have made. The depth of knowledge, love for local business and support available in the chamber pays back the fee in no time. Winning the Business Women of the Year in 2019 has given me the confidence that self-employed people working from home need from time to time."

Meet the Members FINDINGS I opened Findings as a Pop-up Shop in the Summer of this 2021 to sell Art, Jewellery and Crafts which I design. Everything is original and made in our in-store workshop. The pop-up was in effect a trial run. I wanted to hone my products and to see if there was a commercially viable business. I figured if the business could survive in the current climate then it would have a good chance of a future. Findings is still here (thanks to all my lovely customers) and busy coming up to Christmas, especially fulfilling orders for the personalised Music, Dance and Heart ranges of pictures and orders for bespoke jewellery. After a post-Christmas Break, the shop will reopen as ‘Findings on the Square’ with our range extended to children’s books and toys. This reopening will be in tandem with the launch of our brand and a full online shop. ‘I get such a buzz when I meet someone and see they’re wearing my

Meet the Members TAXASSIST ACCOUNTANTS Businesses urged to check they still qualify for government supports. TaxAssist Accountants launches a free, complete, Covid support guide for SMEs. Business owners are being urged to make sure they are not missing out on government support still available to them with the next phase of the roadmap approaching fast. After frequent changes, some confusion around eligibility and when schemes will wind down has set in. TaxAssist Accountants, an

accountancy network for SMEs, has launched a free, consolidated, guide that brings together all of the remaining supports, including their planned end dates. The document acts as a practical checklist for business owners who want to ask themselves; am I still getting all the supports I could be getting? Speaking about the guide, Terry O’Donovan of TaxAssist Accountants Blackpool said ‘The key thing to say is the support is there so don’t miss out. Business owners are busy re-establishing their businesses and they don’t have the time to spend online researching the latest updates from each government agency. Add to that the fact that some information on the internet is now out of date and you can see how

you, how much you can get and how you go about applying step by step then this is the guide for you’. The guide is available to download for free online at

Meet the Members THE WEBSITE CHEF Baking success into your website

Ongoing maintenance support packages Getting a well-designed website is only the first step towards having a successful one. Ongoing maintenance to protect your security and keep your site working efficiently is vital. Yet I’ve heard some really stressful stories of people being left with no help at all after the original build. I can assure you, I will always be available to help if needed. My optional maintenance packages are transparent and have your best interests at heart. I want to make sure you always have a successful

website, not just a pretty one. One of the most common causes of websites being hacked is the failure of site owners to keep plugins and themes up-to-date. This usually happens because the business owner is too busy running their business to keep tabs on their website. It's perfectly understandable and yet if you've spent the time and money creating a website you don't want to
