Blarney Christmas Fair 2021

It was wonderful to see the return of the Annual Blarney Christmas Fair this year. Crafters, artists and food producers showed their wares and visitors were treated to a display of handmade candles, timber snowmen, vinyl art, beautiful paintings, handmade jewellery, Christmas decorations, handmade soaps, delicious food, origami, timber products, ceramics and so much more. It was heart-warming to watch visitors coming into the Rathpeacon Community Hall and choosing carefully their gifts for their loved ones and even to treat themselves. Happy faces from buyers and traders made a grey Sunday so much more enjoyable. In case you didn’t make it to the fair – fear not, Bia Sásta has planned an online campaign with all the traders that have been at the fair. So there is still time to get your special gift before Christmas. Find Bia Sásta on Facebook and Instagram.

Cllr Damian Boylan Contact details: Tel: 087 2244364 e-mail : case numbers in older primary school age children. Schools may engage with parents where there are difficulties arising for an individual child. These measures have been implemented successfully at post-primary since September 2020 and it is envisaged that they will operate successfully with the support of school’s communities in the primary school setting. The education sector throughout the pandemic has consistently drawn upon public health expertise for the protection of the entire school community.

It’s been quite the few weeks with the issue of the new Covid variant hitting us. The initial reports are quite good around symptoms of the new variant which initially at least seem mild. Nevertheless the Government on the recommendations of NPHET have taken some steps and I will lay two of them out here. Masks in schools The wearing of face masks by children in third class and upwards is a strong public health recommendation from the NPHET and has been endorsed by Government. While there is no statutory requirement for this in the regulatory framework, it is generally accepted by the school community that rules put in place to protect the health and safety of the school community should be followed, unless there is a very good reason not to do so. It is generally recognised and accepted that masks protect both the wearer and others around them. This is a temporary public health measure, in the interest of protecting children and the school staff and the school community, given the very high

Exemptions A medical certificate to certify that a person falls into a category listed below must be provided to the school on behalf of, any person (pupil) who claims that they are covered by the exemptions below: any pupil with difficulty breathing who cannot wear a cloth face covering or a visor any pupil who is unable to remove the cloth facecovering or visor without assistance any pupil who has special needs and who may feel upset or very uncomfortable wearing the cloth face covering or visor, for example pupils with intellectual or developmental disabilities, mental health conditions, sensory concerns or tactile sensitivity. Schools will be best placed to identify those children whose complex needs are such that the wearing of face covering may not be possible for them, and to discuss this with parents as required. In such circumstances a school may not require medical certification to provide an exemption to the wearing of face coverings. In other circumstances where a medical certificate is not a person (staff or pupil) will be refused entry to the school.

14 | Blarney Business

Pupils using school transport Pupils from 3rd class and up on the primary transport scheme are required to wear face masks/coverings subject to the exemptions above. Mixed classes in single rooms Where there are mixed classes, e.g., 2nd and 3rd class in a single classroom, schools should note that only children in 3rd class and above, are required to wear face masks. As per previous advice, however, parents of other children who would prefer that their children wear a face mask are not precluded from doing this. Provision of face masks Parents should be advised that they obtain face masks for their children which fit properly and are comfortable for the child to wear. If a child forgets, loses or damages their masks during the school day, then the school should have a sufficient supply to replace the mask for the child in case a back-up face covering is needed during the day or where required on an ongoing basis. Antigen Testing and pricing Rapid testing is already in widespread use across Irish society in areas like long-term residential care facilities, meat-processing factories and in the higher and further education sectors. Close contacts of a confirmed case who are fully vaccinated and asymptomatic are provided with free antigen tests. Antigen tests are also this week being extended to schools for close-contact cases. We want to ensure that antigen tests are widely available at an affordable price. Government is already supporting lower prices for antigen kits with a zero VAT rate for all COVID-19 test kits. This will continue into 2022.

We have also engaged extensively with leading retailers and wholesalers. Due to increased competition in the market the retail price of antigen tests for consumers has dropped, with many products now available for €3 or less. Market forces are bringing the price of antigen tests down without Government intervention. We will continue to keep this under review to ensure access to tests at affordable prices. Always check that the test is marked CE as this certifies reliability. Remember that if you have covid-19 symptoms, you should self-isolate and seek a PCR test from the HSE. INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL With effect from 00.01 am on Friday 3 December 2021, persons arriving into the State from overseas who have been vaccinated or recovered from COVID-19 will be required also to have a certified* “negative/not-detected” test result (i.e. not selfadministered), from an antigen test taken no more than 48 hours before arrival* or a PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before arrival. It is envisaged that current exemptions from testing (e.g. children aged 11 and under) would continue to apply, in line with existing regulations. Air and sea carriers will be required to carry out preboarding checks for compliance, supplemented by BMU/GNIB spot-checks on arrivals at ports and airports This measure will apply for a minimum period of two weeks and kept under review with a view to removal as soon as possible thereafter taking account of the overall epidemiological situation. Mandatory Hotel Quarantine Government agreed that the Health (Amendment) (No. 3) Bill 2021 will be initiated in the Dáil or the Seanad upon finalisation of the text.

Antigen testing Public health advice recognises the potential value of more general use of antigen tests in particular situations if you do not have symptoms of COVID-19.* Engagement has taken place with leading retailers and wholesalers on the availability of affordable antigen tests through the retail sector. Early indications are that prices reductions have already been brought forward by several large retailers in recent days. The pricing and availability of antigen tests continue to be closely monitored, with a focus on ensuring their continued availability to the public at affordable prices.

but we all get information overload in times like these. By far the most important thing we can all do is to enjoy our Christmas, wash your hands, wear a mask where required but enjoy the break. We’ve all earned that much. Have a peaceful Christmas and let’s approach 2022 with hope and ambition. Thank you to Blarney & District Chamber of Commerce for this opportunity every month, it is much appreciated. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you feel I can be of assistance,

Key messages The public health advice is that the future trajectory remains uncertain. The three steps everyone can take to help reduce the spread of the virus are: 1. Get vaccinated and get your booster when you are called. 2. If you have symptoms of COVID-19, get a PCR test, self-isolate until you get your result and then follow the public health advice. 3. In every situation, reduce your risk of catching / transmitting COVID-19 over the coming weeks by: prioritising close friends and family and being conscious of vulnerable people (including yourself) in your circle. meeting outdoors where possible and opening windows and doors to let fresh air in if meeting indoors. ·wearing a mask, keeping your distance and cleaning your hands frequently; and using antigen tests appropriately. This is a lot to take in and I have had several people on to me from schools and those travelling who were confused. I’ve tried my best to explain as well as I can,

How to keep your home safe over Christmas home security tips to dissuade burglars CHRISTMAS is a popular time of year for burglary. How can you improve your home security and prevent robbery? Home security is an important priority for those who wish to avoid burglary this Christmas. One in 10 people have a friend or family member who has been burgled. Now, new research has revealed that people are nervous about the security of their property over the festive period. A report found that; 1 in 4 people (25%) feel nervous about the security of their property if they are out for the evening or away from home. They found that lighting ranked higher than any other type of security measure in the study which asked homeowners how they aim to keep their homes safe. Outdoor security light (40 per cent) topped the list of security measures people are taking. Leaving the lights on (27 per cent) and leaving the lights on a timer (31 per cent) - both tactics which lead intruders to believe the house is occupied - are popular choices. Christmas is a popular time of year of break ins, as it is dark and there are likely to be valuables in the home. Police have said: “With all the excitement of the Christmas period, people can become a bit lax with their home security – at the very time when they need to be the most careful.” Instances of robbery and burglary rise during the autumn and winter months and actually peaks in January although Christmas is still a prime time.

How to prevent burglary There are numerous ways to prevent break ins. This includes: Locking doors and windows every time you leave the house, even when you're in the garden. Hide all keys out of sight and away from the letterbox. Install a visual burglar alarm with 24/7 monitoring Install good outside lighting Install a CCTV Mobile Patrols to your property Burglary facts - what you need to know about break-ins: A burglar takes just one minute to decide whether to enter your home, according to finding’s and in that time they will spot up to 11 security flaws. Meet the Members FINDINGS I opened Findings as a Pop-up Shop in the Summer of this 2021 to sell Art, Jewellery and Crafts which I design. Everything is original and made in our in-store workshop. The pop-up was in effect a trial run. I wanted to hone my products and to see if there was a commercially viable business. I figured if the business could survive in the current climate then it would have a good chance of a future. Findings is still here (thanks to all my lovely customers) and busy coming up to Christmas, especially fulfilling orders for the personalised Music, Dance and Heart ranges of pictures and orders for bespoke jewellery. After a post-Christmas Break, the shop will reopen as ‘Findings on the Square’ with our range extended to children’s books and toys. This reopening will be in tandem with the launch of our brand and a full online shop. ‘I get such a buzz when I meet someone and see they’re wearing my jewellery!’

Meet the Members BIA SÁSTA The end of the year always gets us thinking of the months that have passed and what worked, what didn’t, what we learned and how we can do things better. I am currently working with a group of creatives and I have learned as much from them as they have from me. 2021 has been as weird as 2020 was but thankfully, I was a lot busier and got used to the online mentoring and teaching. Although busy, business has changed. I concentrated more on the mentoring side, helping start-up businesses to get business plans done etc. and discovered how much I enjoy teaching and sharing my experience. I am looking forward to times when I can start the food event side of the business – at least to a limited capacity as the new side is just too exciting to stop. Wishing all my clients – new and old – a wonderful Christmas time and the very best for a better 2022.

Meet the Members BLARNEY WELLNESS CENTRE It’s been an incredibly busy year at Blarney Wellness Centre with both therapies and the long awaited return of yoga classes. Never one to rest on my laurels, I’ve been up-skilling throughout lockdowns and I’m now a registered meditation and mindfulness teacher for children and adults. I’m excited for 2022 and my diary is filling up already which bodes really well for the future. Yoga classes begin again on Tuesday 11th and Thursday 13th of January from 7-8pm in the brand new Courtbrack Community Centre. Meditation classes will remain on zoom for now with occasional “popups” and a 4 week evening course. Children’s yoga & meditation classes will begin again next year. I wish to thank my wonderful clients for supporting my business, for referrals and of course for purchasing gift vouchers. On gift vouchers, I’ve a special offer for my most popular treatment, Stress Melt Therapy at the moment. Buy 4 for €200 (usually €240) Buy 6 for €300 (1 free). So this would be a wonderful gift for regular clients, those who’d like to be or corporate clients/staff.

Cork City Council responded very quickly to our request for some signs to advise the public to take care when around the animals. The Fen is there for everyone's enjoyment but please remember...the wildlife was there first.

Meet the Members TAXASSIST ACCOUNTANTS Businesses urged to check they still qualify for government supports. TaxAssist Accountants launches a free, complete, Covid support guide for SMEs. Business owners are being urged to make sure they are not missing out on government support still available to them with the next phase of the roadmap approaching fast. After frequent changes, some confusion around eligibility and when schemes will wind down has set in. TaxAssist Accountants, an accountancy network for SMEs, has launched a free, consolidated, guide that brings together all of the remaining supports, including their planned end dates. The document acts as a practical checklist for business owners who want to ask themselves; am I still getting all the supports I could be getting? Speaking about the guide, Terry O’Donovan of TaxAssist Accountants Blackpool said ‘The key thing to say is the support is there so don’t miss out. Business owners are busy re-establishing their businesses and they don’t have the time to spend online researching the latest updates from each government agency. Add to that the fact that some information on the internet is now out of date and you can see how there is confusion. If you want to see at a glance what might apply to you, how much you can get and how you go about applying step by step then this is the guide for you’. The guide is available to download for free online at and is available via TaxAssist’s app. TaxAssist’s dedicated COVID-19 hub is also updated weekly with new information.
