LED FACT SHEET

Why Are LEDs Better Than Fluorescents? • LEDs are safe for the environment; They do not contain hazardous materials such as mercury that damage our ecosystem and water supplies. • No UV radiation; UV radiation from fluorescent lamps can cause headaches • LEDs allow for flexible modular construction and an adaptability to limitless configurations. • LEDs are shatter resistant with at least twice the rated lifetime of fluorescents. • LEDs are uniquely suitable for cold environments and freezer-app locations; LED performance and lifetime are often optimized in cool environments. • Frequent dimming of LEDs will not result in loss of lumen maintenance, but will ultimately result in cooler junction temperatures, and thus extend lifetime. • Fluorescents are breakable, and are expensive to maintain and recycle. • Better dimming and control capabilities

estimates: Widespread integration of LED ligthing by 2030 will effectively save approximately $120 billion in U.S. spending at today’s energy costs. LED lighting will significantly reduce the amount of materials being put into landfills. In the year 2030, the annual energy savings from solid-state lighting will equal the annual electrical output of 24 large power plants.

From 2010-2030, the increased implementation of LEDs will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 246 million metric tons of carbon. Switching to LED over the next two decades will avoid 1,800 million tons of carbon emission.

LED FACT SHEET

One of the defining features of LEDs is that they emit light in a specific direction. Since directional lighting reduces the need for reflectors and diffusers that can trap light, well-designed LED fixtures can deliver light efficiently to the intended location. Thermal management is arguably the most important aspect of successful LED system design. Source: www1.eere.energy.gov

About LED Applied Technology Thermal Management Thermal Management is one of the most important factors in LED luminaire design, critical to LED lifetime, efficiency, and performance. Proper management of heat at the junction point of an LED can determine the quality of the LED luminaire design. The thermal conditions of an LED are determined by the following factors: Ambient temperature Proper Heat Sink LED efficiency LED Driver Tests and Compliances As LED Technology rapidly advances, and a growing number of LED manufacturers hit the market, it is important for consumers to know that the products they are purchasing meet certain standards of quality. For consumers, this means knowing you are getting a quality product that performs as claimed. In the commercial lighting industry, certain tests and product evaluations are in place to ensure quality products IES-LM-79 Reports – LED Performance LM-79 Reports measure the electrical and photometric measurements of solid-state lighting products. Reports are prepared by accredited testing laboratories conforming to the standards of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA). IES-LM-79 Reports document: Total Luminous Flux; Luminous Intensity Distribution; Electrical Power; Luminous Efficacy (calculation); Color Characteristics

LED FACT SHEET

IES-LM-80 Reports – Lumen Maintenance Lumen Maintenance describes the level of light output maintained by an LED light source over time. LEDs, unlike other light sources, do not suddenly burn out, but begin to slowly degrade (depreciate) after a certain number of burn hours. This depreciation is measured and recorded by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES). so that consumers will know what to expect from their LED light source over time. UL Certification – Safety and Building Standards Building and Life Safety codes rely on the use of tested and certified products to meet safety and performance objectives. Code authorities rely on UL to provide world-class safety certifications, standards and technical information on products regulated by these codes. UL is one of the best-known OSHA “Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories” (NRTLs). UL certification lets a consumer know that the LED luminaire meets national safety standards and is fully equipped for safe building integration. Living Technology certifies its products C-UL-US, meeting requirements in both the United States and Canada. Ingress Protection (IP) Rating An Ingress Protection rating is important to fixtures intended for outdoor use or exposure to water, dust, vapor, pressure, and/or other environmental hazards, pollutants, or wash-down scenarios. An ingress protection rating (or IP code) indicates compliance with the International Electrotechnical Commission. RoHS compliancy refers to the absence of hazardous materials including mercury -- a serious environmental pollutant and food-source toxin found in both fluorescent and HID lamps. Design Lights Consortium (DLC) Listing The DLC is a solid-state lighting resource that qualifies products for rebate programs based on a collection of product data and testing, similar to Energy Star, but with categories for outdoor LED luminaires, linear panel retrofits, and other fixtures that do not have an Energy Star category. The listing is intended to ensure that only high-quality, high-performance, tested and verified LED products will be eligible for rebate participating programs.

Advanced LED Technology How Does it Work?

THERMAL MANAGEMENT I Rapid Thermafuse Technology.

Proper thermal management plays the biggest role in LED lifetime. Patent-pending Rapid Thermafuse Technology works to transfer heat from the LEDs to the existing fixture housing, which acts as an effective heat dissipator. This technique results in LED core temperatures of only 5-10º above room temperature and an LED lifetime exceeding 168,000 hours.

LED Strip Rapid Thermafuse Technology Existing Housing

RECYCLES EXISTINGHOUSING as a heat sink

Rapid Thermafuse Technology provides a freeway for heat dissipation from the LEDs to the existing housing.

Because Precise

Means Efficient.

CONTROLLED OPTICS

Not only are LEDs a more efficient light source2, but when their precise directional nature is designed for correctly, they can illuminate the same space equally or better than alternate light sources with fewer lumens. Deliver illumination where it counts: with Isotropic Diffusion, LEDs are diffused as they leave the housing, ensuring minimal light loss and making the most out of your LED technology.

RETROFIT PRODUCT COMPARISON

Why Think Outside The Tube™? VS

Fluorescent, Claris LED Retrofit Kits have.. No Mercury, no UV No Flicker or Low Ballast Hum Longer Lifetime (20,000 hours vs 168,000 hours) No Waste Heat. Fluorescents product Waste Heat which increases building cooling costs. No fluorescent efficiency downfall. Fluorescents emit light in all directions, which is lost in reflectance, whereas LEDs are a directional light source, meaning you can get more light with fewer lumens. Higher color rendering, better quality of light™. No color quality degradation over lifetime No issues operating in cool/cold environments Non-breakable No warm-up time for LEDs Better dimming compatibility

VS

LED Tube, Claris LED Retrofit Kits have.. No Heat Problems Longer Lifetime No possible electric shock No internal driver problems (which include: uneven heat distribution, CRI inconsistencies) No wasteful accessory components (pins, end caps, molded lens, etc) Lens sitting further from LEDs, minimizing light-loss from total internal reflectance Refer to DOE Caliper Report for more information on LED tube performance compared to alternative solutions: Caliper Exploratory Study: Recessed Troffer Lighting http://apps1.eere.energy.gov/buildings/publications/pdfs/ssl/caliper_recessed-troffer_2013.pdf

Claris LED Retrofit Kits Improve Quality of Light™.

Quality of Light™

CLARIS Series Retrofit Kits are all about performance and controllability. In the name of the environment and our wallets, Americans have become accustomed to making compromises when it comes to our quality of light. The average fluorescent lamp offers a CRI, or Color Rendering Index, of around 60 out of 100, often having too much green or magenta in their spectrum. The lower the CRI rating, the less accurate the colors in the visual spectrum will appear. Claris LED Retrofit Kits offer a CRI as high as 86 -- meaning colors appear brighter, crisper and closer to the rendering of daylight on a sunny day.

UTILITY REBATES

UTILITY REBATES

www.dsireusa.org

Maximize your lighting upgrade savings with Utility Rebates. All Spirit Foundation LED Lighting Products are DLC (Design Lights Consortium) Listed and eligible for rebates. This means you can save significantly on the up-front cost of retrofitting. Please refer to the website above, www.dsireusa.org, to find utility rebate programs available in your location. Why Utility Rebates? State Public Utility Commissions (PUCs) set energy savings goals. Energy savings are an alternative to the capital expense of expanding power plant capacity. So, as a customer, you are being paid to save energy. What Types of Rebates Can I Receive? Prescriptive: Predetermined dollar amount rebate for each fixture replaced. Custom: Rebate based on total energy savings of your specific project. This category of rebates is built for products or retrofit types that currently do not have an assigned prescriptive. The process is more paperwork-intensive and requires an on-site audit and post-inspection, but can often yield a much higher return.

ENERGY SAVINGS: CASE STUDY 2

EPAct TAX INCENTIVE EPAct Tax Incentives are the sleeping giant when it comes to saving money on a lighting upgrade. Building owners can see significant savings, even greater than what may see from utility rebates. Signed by President Bush on August 8, 2005, the Energy Policy Act (EPACT) lays the foundation for the new Federal tax incentives for consumers and businesses that pursue energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy. Commercial building owners and lessees who purchase and install energy-saving products in their businesses can qualify for a tax deduction under EPACT. Buildings must achieve a 50 percent reduction in annual energy costs as compared to a base building defined by the industry standard ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1-2001, including approved addenda through April 2, 2003. The Treasury Department sets out specific tax regulations for lighting efficiency. Because lighting systems are easy to upgrade and the precise energy savings gained by upgrades are already known, building owners and lessees are encouraged to focus on lighting improvements first. Lighting systems that reduce lighting power density by 40 percent and employ dual switching — the ability to switch roughly half the lights off and still have fairly uniform light distribution — qualify owners for a full tax deduction of 60 cents per square foot off the cost of purchase. The IRS also outlines a prorated incentive schedule in which systems that reduce lighting power density by 25 to 40 percent may earn a partial deduction of 30 to 60 cents per square foot. The guidelines require that lighting level and lighting control standards be met in order for owners to qualify for the tax deductions.
