The Park at South Point: Commercial Development Allows for New Public Park

M

ore than a decade ago, the state realigned and widened the 460 bypass near the LewisGale Hospital. The construction left a 35-acre, teardrop-shaped property stretching from Hightop Road along Farmview Drive. The Blacksburg Partnership, the town’s non-profit economic development organization, fostered this project for several years by helping facilitate the transfer of property from the state to the town at no cost. Recently, with additional assistance from the Partnership, the town sold a small portion of the property for commercial use. The commercial development of approximately eight acres, allows the rest of the land to be developed as recreational fields and a park, called the Park at South Point. “It will be nice for the people in this area, so they don’t have to go across town to walk on a trail,” Dean Crane, director of parks and recreation, said. Demand for athletic fields is also high. “We’ve had more requests for field space. More sports are being offered in our area, with a wide range of age groups participating. Flat, playable land is hard to come by,” Crane said. Preparing land is expensive. Earmarking part of the property for commercial development made the park project possible, as proceeds from the sale eliminate many construction costs. “We’re able to build the basic park footprint without spending budget funding,” Crane said. “Once developed, we can maintain the park area and add amenities for all to enjoy.” “We’re excited about this project because it demonstrates a collaborative effort to make the best use of that property,” said Diane Akers, president of the Blacksburg Partnership. Roanoke firm Smith-Packett, a housing and senior health developer, bought half of the land slated for commercial use to build an assisted living and memory care facility. The two-story, 69 thousand square foot building will open in early 2015 and have 90 residential units. As part of the deal, Smith-Packett will grade the fields and build a walking trail. Susan Eckert, president of Harmony Senior Services at Smith-Packett, said the Blacksburg property is ideal for their project. “We look for beautiful common areas outside for our residents to enjoy,” she said. “This is a huge amenity for residents and for visiting families. There will be a pleasant place close by where families can spend time with loved ones,” Eckert said. Smith-Packett has also promised up to $10,000 to match community funding of park facilities. By 2015, the field area at the Park at South Point will be graded and seeded, and have a walking track circling it. When the second half of the land slated for commercial development sells, the town will have enough funding to begin developing the second phase of the park. The completed walking trail will be more than a mile long, and there are plans for a playground, picnic area, and other recreational amenities.

A New Life for the Alexander Black House Many say the Alexander Black House’s turret crowns the roof like a witch’s hat. This classic component of Queen Anne style architecture adds an element of whimsy to the home. The restoration of the Black House has been a careful balance of renewing the home’s architectural beauty while keeping in mind its new purpose—a place for community. The house was built in the 1890s for Alexander Black, a prominent businessman and descendent of Blacksburg’s founder William Black. When it was built, the turret balanced tenuously on columns and at times fell off, victim to harsh winds and weather. At one point it wasn’t reattached and sat in storage for years. In January 2014, a crane lifted the turret back to its rightful place. Steel beams that run the length of the house and are cemented into the basement floor keep the turret secure. “It is a beautiful house, inside and out,” Rhonda Morgan, executive director

of the Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Foundation, said. With the first phase of restoration complete, the house now serves as a centerpiece of Blacksburg’s culture and history. One room in the house holds a recreation of Alexander Black’s bedroom, with his original furniture. The rest of the house balances beautiful Victorian details with modern amenities— meeting and event space, state of the art technology, and historical and fine arts exhibits. The large, wrap-around porch and grounds will host a variety of outdoor events such as weddings, receptions, tea parties, concerts, and other public gatherings. “We want to celebrate the things that make Blacksburg unique,” Morgan said. “I’m excited for the community to come in and make it theirs.” For more information about the history of the house, the restoration project, and upcoming grand opening events, visit www.blacksburghistory.org or call 540-558-0746.

Sidewalk Stage Brings Art to the People

Y

ou’ve probably seen Chris Saunders in Downtown Blacksburg. He’s got long, wavy white hair and a beard, plays a red-label Yamaha guitar, and could be singing City of New Orleans or Carolina on my Mind. You might not know his name is Chris, because most people call him Moon, or Dr. Moon, as it says in bright letters pasted inside his guitar case. He’s downtown as part of Blacksburg’s Sidewalk Stage, a program that encourages artists to perform outdoors. “Chris is truly a Blacksburg ambassador for the arts,” Heather Browning, the town’s community relations manager, said. “His love of music and love of this community are so apparent.” Saunders is one of the most prolific participants in Sidewalk Stage. Any artist can perform—musicians, actors, dancers. “We’ve had jugglers, mimes, and sketch artists in addition to some outstanding musicians, including a cellist,” Browning said. No registration or permit is needed, and performers can accept donations if they wish. Saunders likes breaking down the traditional barriers to performance. “When you happen upon a street performer, art just happens to you,” Saunders said. Browning adds, “I hope this can become the Blacksburg way—A fun, energetic community with an artsy feel you can’t describe. It should be an experience.” Saunders puts thought into where and when he performs, braving bad weather to bring a smile to someone’s face, and he likes making personal connections. “I can kneel down and allow children to play on the guitar,” he said. “You don’t have that stage separation, and it is really beneficial for exposing children to art.” He also makes an effort to reach out to college students. He can say hello in several languages, and always asks about their homework. He can empathize; he finished his degree in theater at Radford in 2012. As part of Sidewalk Stage, Saunders finds he approaches art differently. “It puts the artist with the people,” he said. It also lets new artists perfect their craft. “If a musician only has one song, she can go and sing it,” Saunders said. “There’s an energy building around the arts in Blacksburg,” Browning said, citing the Moss Arts Center and other Virginia Tech venues, the Lyric Theatre, galleries, museums, and various acting companies. “Downtown Blacksburg is having a renaissance. I hope the arts community will see their local government as a partner in this effort,” she said. All artists are welcome to participate in the Sidewalk Stage. For more information and some basic guidelines, visit www.blacksburg.gov/sidewalkstage.

And Away It Goes: Spring and Fall Cleanup help residents keep tidy, but where does it all go?

S

ome measure spring by budding flowers, or autumn with turning leaves. In Blacksburg, changing seasons are marked by a beloved service: brush and junk cleanup days. The cleanup is spread over four weeks, and each quadrant of town is assigned a week. Residents pile brush, junk, tires, and old household appliances in front of their homes. Then a backhoe loader makes its way around town, scooping up the piles with a clamshell and depositing them into the back of a dump truck. Where does it all go? If you leave your brush in loose piles, it is deposited on a piece of property owned by Virginia Tech off of Prices Fork Don’t have a good Road. A contractor comes in, grinds everything up, and spot for your junk hauls it off. Then the material goes to a power plant and is and brush piles? used as an alternative energy source. All junk items go to the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority in Christiansburg, Call the Public Works Department where they are broken down, recycled, or discarded. and let them know. Not everything is taken during cleanup days, like Someone will visit hazardous chemicals, wet paint, electronics and batteries. However, residents can bring any chemicals they need to your home and dispose of to the Montgomery Regional Waste Authority help you identify themselves during special collection days. For paint, residents a place that works can dry it up using cat litter or sand and then throw it away well for our crews with regular trash, but many times unused paint is a welcome and avoids blocking donation to non-profits or daycares. The YMCA on North Main sidewalks or Street provides recycling for both electronics and batteries, damaging property. and several downtown businesses take batteries and CFL light bulbs for recycling also. “Many cleanup items are things you can’t throw away in your household trash,” John Boyer, director of public works, said. “It helps people keep their lots clean and is a service valued by our residents,” he said. To find out when spring and fall cleanup takes place in your neighborhood call 540-961-1142.

SENIOR AND ADULT PROGRAMS

FOR THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

The Senior Center has a wheelchair accessible bus with room to carry assistive devices. Staff is unable to personally assist individuals beyond loading and unloading the vehicle; therefore, we require a caretaker or aide to accompany those with special needs.

IMPORTANT TRIP INFORMATION

Vans will be available to load no earlier than 30 minutes prior to departure unless otherwise specified in the trip description. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to departure. It is difficult to find the perfect temperature for every participant on the bus. It is suggested those who are cold-natured bring sweater/coats and warm-natured dress in layers. Staff is happy to make adjustments to the temperature but safety is the primary concern. Let the driver know at a time when he is not distracted about any temperature adjustments.
