Veterans Voices of Canada (VVOC) is turning to the community for help in honouring Canada’s veterans. The non-profit organization, headed by founding executive director Allan Cameron, is dedicated to documenting Canadian veterans’ stories and accounts of war. It also organizes, and is involved with, related events in the community. The more people available to help with such events, the better, according to Cameron. “We want to have a list of volunteers to draw from,” he said. “We’re looking for people just to make it easier.” The VVOC-organized Flags of Remembrance tribute to Canada’s war dead last year — in which 116 Canadian flags were placed alongside Highway 11 just east of Sylvan Lake — garnered plenty of positive attention from all across the country. It’s just one of several events this year for which volunteers are being sought. “It was emotional to see those flags go up,” said Cameron. “When I put that first flag up, all the horns started honking and waves started happening, and that made me realize that people get this. “They know why it’s up there and they know why these flags are going up.” The 128 flags for this year’s edition of the nowannual tribute will be displayed on both sides of the highway between Oct. 16 and Nov. 14. Volunteers are also needed for other events, such as Veterans Appreciation Day on Aug. 30, and to take up roles on committees and in fundraising initiatives. Those interested in doing so are asked to contact Cameron at 403-887-7114 or at info@vetvoicecan.org. “I need people with the drive and the passion of volunteering,” said Cameron. “In the end, we’re giving honour, remembrance and tribute to our veterans.” Further information is available online at vetvoicecan.org, and through the Veterans Voices of Canada and Flags of Remembrance Facebook pages.
