Re: Story: More ore means Ajax assessment delay: “I’m sorry, but I couldn’t have any less confidence in any of these big-business propositions. They care nothing about our home.” — posted by Rocko Martin

Editor: During all this jostling for position and while the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) approval process runs its course, we have seen that Poland’s KGHM has been corporately responsible to Kamloops in the following ways: 1) The purchase of Sugarloaf Ranch and retention of all employees. 2) Working successfully in arrangements made with New Gold to mutually build a pump house on Kamloops Lake (through the Ajax mine property).

3) KGHM Ajax also allowed New Gold exclusive use of two buildings on Ajax property. 4) Although the B.C. EAO has not required human-impact testing be done to gain approval, KGHM Ajax is doing it. To further exemplify that corporate responsibility, KGHM Ajax has just publicly announced it has discovered (and is investigating) a new ore body. 5) KGHM Ajax also stated it is looking at increasing the distance between the mine facilities and the city.

KGHM Ajax has been corporately responsible to Kamloops thus far and corporately responsible to its neighbour and bordering mine, New Gold’s New Afton operation. Therefore, KGHM Ajax has shown Kamloops it is here to open the old mine and, yes, make money. That’s the nature of any Kamloops business. Les Evens Kamloops

“I am wondering if letter writer Lawrence Beaton is offering to sell to Yves Lacasse of KGHM Ajax. “Maybe they could strike a deal, seeing as Beaton’s land value has decreased.” — posted by Elmer King

Do you think new ministers at the provincial and federal levels will give the proposed Ajax mine a better shot at gaining approval?

Re: Story: Ajax letter ‘disappointing’: “Aberdeen is a hot spot for unstable terrain movement. “Damages to homes range in the thousands of dollars as tests provided information that thousands of gallons of water is moving under the ground in this area. “The City of Kamloops spent thousands of dollars to try to stop the shifting of homes due to this water. “Blasting from Ajax could certainly be very dangerous venture. “Movement from the blasting could certainly exacerbate this problem, causing a major landslide.” — posted by Sophie Smith

No reason not to have Ajax perform mine blast test Editor: Re: (‘Ajax rejects calls for Ajax blast test,’ Aug. 1): I can’t imagine anyone in our beautiful city would not find it necessary to experience (in other words, hear and feel) a fullsize Ajax blast test. Experiential learning is the most informative — and with it we would have a much clearer picture about what we would be in for if the mine were to be approved. Does this really seem unnecessary? To me — and, I think, most Kamloopsians — this is very necessary. I wonder if Yves Lacasse, Ajax’s

manager of external affairs, finds it “not necessary” to first test the water before he dives into a lake, or “not necessary” to first meet the person he’s going to share his house with for the next 30 years. Why wouldn’t Lacasse want to be fully transparent about such important awareness for Kamloops’ citizens to have? There seems to be plenty of money to solicit various high-profile people to help with Ajax’s publicity efforts and plenty of money to hand out to various local charities to win favour, so why not spend some money to really let us experience what the future holds in this one aspect of

potential effects of having a mine in our backyard? We see through Lacasse. Many people see and may not really care because money speaks louder than Lacasse’s very obvious attempts at manipulating public opinion. Lacasse may have actually fooled some of the people, but the majority of residents in Kamloops care very much about the health of their community — even more than the proposed economic boon the mine would supposedly offer.
