Mobility issues shouldn’t stop you from being independent. And they should never stop families who want to care for a loved one at home! And that’s where the knowledgeable, helpful staff at Angel Accessibility Solutions can help. “For many people, the idea of placing a loved one in institutional care is expensive and impersonal. Solutions such as ceiling lifts or chair lifts can make it possible to safely and affordably provide care, giving your loved ones the freedom, privacy and comfort that come with staying at home.” In addition to allowing families to provide more personal care at home, properly selected and installed equipment can also help prevent injury for the caregiver, notes Angel Accessibility Solutions’ Christina Maitland. As a local company serving the needs of Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands for 16 years, Angel Accessibility Solutions continually strives to find innovative solutions to the needs of each and every client. That process starts from the initial consultation and lasts long after the installation is finished. “We do not simply install a piece of equipment and walk away,” explains Maitland. “We are there for our customers for the life of their product, offering exceptional customer and technical service, and preventive maintenance.”

A.

When it comes to cooking, not only does steam provide a healthier way of cooking, it also enhances the taste and texture of your food. With laundry, steam allows you to remove odours and loosen wrinkles from clothing, or add extra cleaning power when used in conjunction with a wash cycle.

How can i use window coverings to complete my renovation?

A.

It’s important to budget for your window coverings as part of the overall renovation. Without that, the bones of your new space will be complete, but the finishing touches – the part your friends and family will see first – won’t be.

While we don’t necessarily think of hard surfaces like stone, concrete or rock needing cleaning, the fact is that over time, these surfaces can become dull and dirty. i thought my granite counters were stainproof – not so! is there any way to remove the mark?

A.

You can set a stain in stone just as you can set a stain in laundry. For marble and granite, make a poultice of baking soda and water (creating a paste), cover with plastic, tape it down and poke holes in it, leave it for 24 hours, then remove plastic, clean off the paste and let it dry. Carpets, area rugs, chairs and sofas are among the heaviest used items in our homes, but unlike counters and tables, they may go the longest time between cleaning. However, the proper care will not only leave things clean and fresh, but will also ensure they stay looking beautiful for years to come. And that’s where the expert care from Victoria’s Coastal Cleaners can help. Victoria’s trusted, family owned and operated carpet and upholstery cleaners for more than 40 years, with IICRC Certified technicians and an A+ accreditation with the BBB, Coastal Cleaners’ emphasis on healthy, environmentally friendly products and techniques is appreciated by both residential and commercial clients. Not only will your carpets and furnishings come out looking fantastic, but the process is non-toxic and non-allergenic, explains Coastal Cleaners owner Elaine Salo, whose parents founded the company four decades ago. And for most carpets, thanks to the Green Seal Certified Host Waterless Dry Extraction System, including deep-cleaning with pile lifting and gentle brush agitation, they’ll be left 100 per cent dry and ready to use. For Berber carpets and upholstery, a hot water extraction method will leave them clean and beautiful with a short drying time. Specializing in delicate Oriental rugs and upholstery with the experience to

tackle challenging areas, customers are confident in Coastal Cleaners’ commitment to a job well done. “Not all spots can be removed from your carpet, just like not all stains will come out of your clothes, but before we start cleaning we will perform a professional carpet inspection and let you know in advance what we will be able to accomplish with the cleaning,” Salo explains. That “Customer First” approach, with policies such as specific scheduled appointment times and honest pricing, is essential for the Better Business Bureau accredited business. “If we miss a spot, should a spot reappear, or if you’re not satisfied with any area, we’ll promptly

Regular vacuuming with a good-quality vacuum is a must to get rid of all the loose dirt – even the dirt you can’t see. And if you do get a spill, DO NOT try to clean it with products designed to need rinsing, such as laundry soap, or products designed to clean hard surfaces as they won’t come out of the carpet properly. Instead, use a cup of water mixed with just ONE DROP of dish soap and a tablespoon of white vinegar. Never pour onto the spot, but dip a white towel in the solution and blot. Don’t scrub, as it could damage fibres. If a carpet is Scotchgarded any spills will be much easier to remove and much less likely to result in permanent staining.

The best projects begin with a solid foundation and more often than not in Victoria, that foundation begins with Butler Brothers Gravel & Concrete. Serving the Southern Vancouver Island with quality aggregate and ready-mix products since the early 1940s, Butler Brothers boasts a fleet of 28 ready-mix trucks plus three batch plants, each certified by the BC Ready-Mixed Concrete Association. Aggregates are produced at Keating, Sooke and Duncan gravel pits, offering everything from fill materials to specialty products. And that’s good news for the many contractors and homeowners looking for a strong, local product for their construction needs, ranging from building foundations and retaining walls to sidewalks, patios and garage slabs. Why concrete? Durability is a key factor, explains Butler Brothers sales manager Todd Hanson. While weather beating takes it’s toll on asphalt and can be limiting in terms of design and pavers are vulnerable to weeds, today’s concrete offers a wealth of possibilities. Coloured, textured or stamped, concrete can take on the look of pavers, tile, slate and more. Offering a low-maintenance choice, concrete simply needs a coat of sealer every one to three years, depending on the wear and tear the surface receives, Hanson explains. How can i keep my concrete looking its best?

A.

It’s important to use a concrete sealer, especially for decorative concrete, which will protect the surface from oils and corrosive materials like winter road salt. You can even choose from different looks – from a flat finish to a highgloss that gives the concrete a wet appearance. While sealing every two or three years should be fine for light traffic areas, annual sealing is advised for heavy use areas like driveways. Before applying, simply powerwash to clean, let dry, then seal.

4FAST FACT can i put hot things on stone or quartz?

A.

Generally, stone and quartz are very heat resistant, but it depends on “how hot” of an object. A tea kettle or a hot dish out of the microwave is typically not a threat but a 450°F pot from the oven can cause damage. It is always better to be safe rather than sorry, so we recommend the use of a hot pad.

While the plants, shrubs and trees often garner much of the attention in a garden, the structures behind the flora – the fences, gates and arbours – are equally important in creating a space that is as beautiful as it is functional. For those who want their home and garden to be as individual as they are, the design and construction professionals at Urban Cedarworks have some brilliant ideas: unique, hand-crafted cedar garden structures using hand-split and custom milled cedar. Wayne Lackner and his talented team have been adding value and interest to Victoria’s outdoor spaces for 12 years, using 100 per cent reclaimed and sustainably harvested cedar. “It’s part of our personal and company philosophy – we don’t want to leave a large footprint,” Lackner explains. “We’re following that passion.” Challenging the perception that pressure-treated lumber is the answer for a long-lasting outdoor feature, Lackner chooses environmentally friendly cedar – sustainable and hand-split for greater strength – and custom-made galvanized post brackets, preventing rot and vastly increasing the longevity of the structure.

The focus for Urban Cedarworks from the beginning has been on working with a client and to provide a product that suits their garden, their home and their unique aesthetic. “We’re builders but we’re also artists so we like to come up with something that will fit into the environment and the home setting,” Lackner says. “We enjoy what we do and working with a client to create the perfect structure.” For more information, or to view a wide array of their past design projects, visit Urban Cedarworks at www.urbancedarworks.com or call 250-380-7022.

For that added unique element, Lackner also uses custom-designed and locally forged gate hardware from a local metalwork artist. “Because of the way our fences and structures are built, they will last a lifetime,” Lackner says.

A.

The key is not in whether the wood is pressure treated or not, but whether the wood is in contact with the soil. We have designed custom galvanized metal post brackets that keep the wood away from the soil but hold the fence, gate or arbour securely in place for years to come.

Furnace, Duct & Chimney Cleaning

While many homeowners are fastidious about keeping the visible part of their home spic and span, it’s dirt and residue they can’t see that can have significant impact on the efficiency and safety of their home. Ensuring heating and cooling systems are clean and running at top efficiency will not only save you money, but also improve indoor air quality, eliminating contaminants from your heating ducts, explains Andrew Simpson, owner of Aero Furnace, Duct and Chimney Cleaning. Even a newly built home may have ducts clogged with construction materials such as wood shavings, drywall dust

or carpet fibers. In addition, newer, more airtight homes tend to have more recycled air, which fills ducts with less fresh air and more dust, Simpson notes. And in the case of your wood-burning fireplace, an annual chimney clean could very well prevent a serious fire. Dryer vents are another hidden dirt collector, where lint from fabrics can build up, leading to longer dryer times and potential lint fires. The good news is that removing the dirt that is hidden from view will help reduce household dust and help you clean and maintain your home quicker and easier. With 10 years in the industry, including

five as owner of Aero Furnace, Duct and Chimney Cleaning, Simpson brings not only a wealth of experience and knowledge of his field, but also a real commitment to building long-term relationships with his clients. It’s no surprise that Aero has been a finalist in the Better Business Bureau Torch Awards. BBB-accredited and WETT-certified, Aero offers flat rates and no up-selling – meaning no surprises for homeowners. “While others charge ‘per vent’ for furnace and air duct cleaning, we have a flat rate. We guarantee one low price for the whole house – with no hidden fees!” Simpson says. “We are your house call specialists.” For more information or to book your appointment, call Aero Furnace, Duct and Chimney Cleaning at 250-479-0090 or visit online at www.aeroservices.ca..

Strange that we’re so attentive to following a “To-Do-List” when leaving for even a short while...and yet many of us make so few provisions for the time when we go away and don’t come back. It’s a time that happens to us all someday...but we do have the opportunity to be prepared simply by making choices regarding our own final arrangements now. Nobody wants to leave a long list of unmade decisions and financial burdens for family members to cope with at a time of stress. Pre-planning your endof-life arrangements ahead of time is the perfect way of knowing for sure that those details are looked after. But making a list for the weekend away is one thing...knowing about necessary details of pre-arrangement is quite different! What do we put on that check list? This is where it’s helpful to turn to the professionals for guidance. i’m buying a new home and i’m wondering why a home inspection is important?

A.

Few people ever go into the crawlspace or attic, yet these are the spaces that can reveal potentially big issues, from drainage and foundation problems, as well as insect or pest infestations to mould and asbestos insulation. Without an inspection, these may well go undiscovered and end up requiring costly repairs after the sale.

Potential team members undergo a significant interview process, including a national criminal record check, to ensure they will be a great fit for Merry Maids’ family culture. “Trust is a huge factor for people,” Tanner says, adding that the company is BBB-accredited with an A+ rating and all staff are bonded and insured. “It’s a worry-free service – all

Eighty per cent of dirt is tracked inside, so placing proper mats inside and outside of all entrances will help reduce the amount of dirt carried in. Walk-off mats (check with a janitorial supply store for best results) are generally made of nylon or olefin, with a rubber or vinyl back, and can be cleaned to keep them looking great.

working so hard. For those planning to sell their homes, upgraded, energy-efficient insulation is also an added selling point. Homes built prior to mid-l990 could most likely benefit from additional insulation in the attic and crawlspace, if applicable. For those built before 1970, exterior walls may also require upgrading. The good news is that the province’s LiveSmart BC incentives have been extended to the end of March 2014, providing grants in eligible homes for improving the insulation in the roof, walls, floors and basements, Ingham notes. Regardless of your insulation needs, the Alpine team will have your home feeling cooler this summer, and cozy and warm once winter rolls around. A home can look beautiful inside and out, but without sufficient insulation, it certainly won’t feel beautiful. But thanks to Alpine Insulation and Sprayfoam – Victoria’s full-service insulation installer – and the province’s Home Energy Efficiency Grants, getting your home to feel as good as it looks is easier than ever. Founded in 1979, Alpine lnsulation is proficient in the full spectrum of insulation options for your home, including spray foam, batts, sprayed fibre and blown retrofit insulation, explains Alpine’s John Ingham. Since its founding, Alpine has committed to providing excellence in both its product and service, demonstrated in its A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau of Vancouver Island. Long-term staff and a commitment to continuing education ensures homeowners receive the most current information about the products and practices best-suited to their homes, from new construction to the city’s heritage buildings. “Everyone who works for Alpine is a professional and we stand behind our work,” Ingham says. While insulation is something we typically can’t see, it plays a big role in the healthy operation of a home. And if you have a house built before 1990, chances are an insulation upgrade could help keep your home more comfortable – warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. ln turn, that increased efficiency will help reduce your energy bills and increase the life of your heating equipment as it won’t be

Why replace your outdated kitchen when you can re-face it? That’s the question many homeowners are asking when it comes time to revitalize their old kitchen or bathroom cabinets. While some kitchens beg for a complete overhaul, others can benefit from a simple refacing, especially when the boxes are in good shape and the existing layout works well. As a result, refacing your existing cabinets can save time and money, but most significantly, it substantially reduces the amount of waste going to the landfill, explains The Kitchen Technician, Randy McCormack. “By adding new doors, > after side panels and hardware, you can create a fresh new look for your kitchen.” Typically kitchens from the late 1980s and early 1990s are the most common candidates for cabinet refacing. Beyond new door fronts, once the cabinets have been taken down to the boxes, The Kitchen Technician can also lend a modern functionality to your cabinets, adding any number of features, from pot

What can homeowners do to ensure their oil tank will continue to serve them well for years to come, without risking the environment? It all starts with the proper care and maintenance. It’s essential to have your oil company visually inspect your tank for leaks at least once a year and add a water disperser every year as preventive maintenance to ward off condensation. Additionally, keeping your oil tank full will further help to reduce corrosive condensation inside and painting your above-ground oil tank as required will help prevent the tank from rusting. are environmentally friendly paints as durable as conventional paints?

A.

Yes, new technology has allowed for green paints to meet and exceed architectural standards. In certain cases, notably exterior restorations, conventional oil primers may be used to ensure surface bonding. Most earlier-era homes have an oil paint base, so to maintain the protective membrane, oil must be reapplied over spot priming to avoid moisture escaping through the latex membrane which is designed to breathe.

How do i get rid of the blanket weed in my pond?

A.

Blanket weed, also called string algae, can be easily addressed with an ionizer that changes the ions from a positive to a negative state and sends traces of copper, zinc and silver in to the water, which will stop the string algae from forming.

Quality, comfort and peace of mind. It’s a big promise when it comes to your windows, one of the most important systems in your home, but with 50 years in the industry, Starline Windows delivers. Over time, windows wear out much like any other component in a home. Old windows tend to be drafty and much less energy-efficient than today’s windows. Other common problems include condensation, noise, rotting wood frames, mold, fogging and cracks. New windows are far more energy-efficient and lower-maintenance, and will both modernize the look of your home and add value. An industry leader, building everything from architecturally designed commercial aluminum windows and doors to the most modern residential vinyl window and door products, Starline Windows has the products and expertise to turn your vision into a success, whether you’re building a new home or renovating with replacement windows. “Our experienced team at Starline Windows will work with you at every step, from the initial design and consultation through to the final window installation,” says Starline’s Brent Dillon. “We take great pride in not only delivering great products, but also ensuring your peace of mind from start to finish. i have interior condensation on my windows. How do i get rid of this?

A.

The water vapour in your home is attracted to the cold surface of inneficient windows. Actions that will help prevent condensation are reducing the humidity in your home, increasing ventilation and air movement by opening doors and/or windows when practical, using exhaust fans in your kitchen, bathroom and laundry room.

explains owner Zo Tounsi. With a variety of products on the market, homeowners must consider the debris protection a product offers, but also the volume of water it will allow into gutters during heavy rainfall. “After even years of proven performance in Victoria, RainFlow has excelled at keeping debris from heavily treed areas out of gutters and allowing gutters to function as they were intended by allowing water to freely flow into the gutter system.” And regardless of the project at hand, customers are confident in the pride of workmanship and service they can expect from the Glass Guys. “The Glass Guys always put our customers first,” Tounsi says. “We make sure our customers have the best experience

Quite often it’s the little things that can make a big difference. In a home, dirty windows can create less-than-appealing curb appeal, not to mention a dingy interior. And neglecting to remove the evergreen needles, leaves and other debris from your gutters can lead to clogged downspouts and drainage systems, while a “simple” overflowing gutter can create big problems for your foundation. The good news? One call to the Glass Guys, Victoria’s window and gutter professionals for the last seven years, will have your home’s windows and gutters looking – and working – as good as new. In addition to interior and exterior window washing, gutter cleaning and roof moss removal, the Glass Guys are the local experts in RainFlow Total Gutter Protection. “Whether you live in Saanich, Langford, Oak Bay, Metchosin or View Royal, you’re likely dealing with pine needles, oak leaves and many other forms of vegetation constantly clogging your gutters. Unlike dryer climates where this can be largely ignored, the large amounts of precipitation our region receives requires homeowners to be vigilant in cleaning their gutters in order to prevent water damage to their homes,”

NTENAN MAI CE ME

WINTER

 Check and clean or replace furnace air filters every month during the heating season.  Clean humidifier 2 or 3 times during the winter months.  Clean faucets aerators and showerheads.  Clean kitchen exhaust fan filters.  Vacuum bathroom fan vent covers.  Vacuum refrigerator condenser coil and clean drain pan.  Check all fire extinguishers, recharge or replace as needed.  Check basement floor drain to ensure trap contains water, refill with water if necessary.  Test relief valve on hot water tank (Caution: HOT WATER, valve may stick open).  Turn off and on plumbing shut-off valves (under toilets and sinks).  Turn off and on circuit breakers to check that they are operational.  Clean out dryer vent ducting.  Keep driveways and walkways clear of snow or ice.  Clean and test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for operation, replace batteries as needed.  Heat Recovery Ventilators: clean filters and core, lubricate fan motors.  Check gauge on fire extinguishers; recharge or replace if necessary.  Monitor your home for excessive moisture levels, for example, condensation on your windows, which can cause significant damage over time and pose health problems. Take corrective action.  Check electrical cords, plugs and outlets for all indoor and outdoor seasonal lights to ensure fire safety: if worn, or plugs or cords feel warm to the touch, replace immediately.  Clean drains in dishwasher, sinks, bathtubs and shower stalls.  Examine windows and doors for ice accumulations or cold air leaks. If found, make a note to repair or replace in the spring.
