Calling someone a dirt bag might normally result in hard feelings but Beth Marks assures people that, in this case, it’s a great compliment. Marks’ Dirt Bag campaign involves selling bags of soil with donations going towards purchasing property for Habitat for Humanity. “We’re raising money for a lot that will set affordable housing into perpetual motion,” said Marks. “The focus of the program is on assisting the working poor to obtain housing. This will benefit the whole community.” When businesses receive a bag of dirt, Marks, who is a realtor, will interview them for Sutton Scoop, a YouTube channel produced by Sutton Group - Lakefront Realty. Marks is part of a committee hoping to raise $300,000 for a lot that would be suitable for a multi-unit dwelling. “The whole premise of Habitat for Humanity is a hand up not a hand out,” said Marks. “It gives people without large incomes the chance to put in sweat equity — usually 500 hours — to help build their home or the next home.” Businesses to receive the Dirt Bag honour include Vernon Moving and Storage, AJ Pets, Greyhound and Fermco.
