best home game win records, the boys in blue will be aiming to capitalize, with their sights set firmly on earning a berth into the WHL playoffs. It’s been a long road, but players, coaches and staff are all looking forward to the next step in the 2012-13 season, beginning with this weekend’s back-to-back games against the Kelowna Rockets. “It feels like it’s been a whirlwind but it’s been great,” GM Cam Hope reflects on his first season in the Capital Region. “We approached it at the start of the year as a building year,” he says, pointing to the four 16-year-olds who have all been great throughout the season, and the several 17-yearolds they’ve been able to add to the mix. All of which means that while the team may be on the younger end of the WHL spectrum this year, the players’ demonstrated skill and commitment bode well for the future. “Our expectations were that we would be a playoff team,” Hope notes, pointing out that even with the team’s challenging six-game roadtrip, the Royals were still standing at 10 games over the 500 mark. While the team may be in tough against some of the top powerhouse teams, like the Edmonton Oil Kings and Portland

Winterhawks, “we can match up well with anybody.” Hope attributes the players’ success to two main factors: “They’ve come to believe in our coaches and they’ve bought into our system.” Not to mention hard work and tenacity. “At one time we had six regular players out of the lineup and we were still finding ways to win,” Hope says, but points out that there’s still much work to be done. “I think how things go in the next two weeks will be just as important as what has happened in the first four months,” Hope says, commending both the coaching staff and players for their commitment and perseverance throughout the season. That hard work will need to continue for the team to stretch its sophomore-year success into the post season, and the Royals would like the fans to play their part as well. “I’m new to Victoria and I’m very impressed with the fans. I had expected it to be good but I didn’t expect it to be as good as it is,” Hope notes. “The fans who have been to the games know how exciting it is. We had 19 home wins – one of the best home records in the Western Hockey League – and that’s not an accident!”

The next six clubs in each conference, based on regular season points, will receive the third to eighth playoff positions, with first playing eighth, second playing seventh, etc. in best-ofseven series.

The four teams in each conference advancing to the second round will be ranked in order of regular season points, with first playing fourth and second playing third in a best-ofseven series. The two winning clubs advance to the best-of-seven WHL Conference Championships. The Eastern and Western Conference Champions will then advance to the best-ofseven WHL Championship Series.
