HEATLEY, Mary The family of Mary Heatley, 91 sadly announce her passing on the morning of October 10th at Peace Arch Hospital. Remembering her with love are her daughters Carol and Dawn, her grandchildren Emma, Vida, Bren and Jaret and her “most favorite person in the world” son-in-law Mile! Many thanks to the staff of the ACE unit, PAH as well as Dr’s. Baasch and Parr. Mary spent the last 5 years in “the Pen”, (The Peninsula residence), enjoying the beautiful environment, spending time with her many friends and sincerely appreciating the care from all the staff. BARRIE, Harold Cameron 1911 - 2012 It is with great sadness that Diane and Caroline announce the death of their father, Harold or Hal, of White Rock, BC, who passed away peacefully in his sleep in his 102nd year on October 9, 2012. Born in Moose Jaw, Sask. and raised in Regina, Hal was the only child of Tom and Jennie Barrie. After High School, Hal attended UBC and the University of Toronto and obtained a degree in Chemical Engineering. His first job was with CIL in Brownsburg, Que. where he met and married Lilian White. Hal’s career took him to DuPont of Canada and then on to Texas, Brockville, Ont. and finally to Montreal. Hal and Lilian retired to Mallorytown, Ont. and then to Cornwall, Ont. When Lilian passed away in 2004, Hal moved to White Rock, BC and lived at Sunnyside Manor for more than seven years. He is survived by his daughter Diane Bower (Donald), four grandchildren, Cari Schmidt, (Kevin), Deena O’Brien, (Daniel), John Bower (Carolee) and Mary Katherine Bower and daughter Caroline Cavers (Kenneth) and two grandchildren Scott Cavers and Mark Cavers. He is also survived by his seven great grandchildren, Finnley, Jack, Ella, Veronica, Mason, Colton and Poppy. Harold enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved his family, people, learning, travel and had a life-long passion for music which he shared with everyone whenever there was a piano nearby. Famous for his repertoire of classic songs he entertained his peers throughout his long and generous life. On his 100th Birthday his family hosted a wonderful celebration to formally “thank him for his music”. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him and never forgotten. So if you hear music from above it is probably because Hal has found a piano in heaven. At Hal’s request there will be no funeral service. Thoughts and condolences are welcome. dbower1@shaw.ca or kccavers@hotmail.com

Breaks, John (Jack) Richard Jack Breaks passed away on August 8, 2012. He is survived and missed greatly by his three children Jack (Paulette), Glen (Gina) and Shari (Tom) Lyle. Jack had seven grandchildren, Sarah Breaks, Robert Breaks, Daniel Lyle, Michael Lyle, Andrea Baga, Kristina Breaks and Joanna Breaks. Jack is also survived by his brothers Bill Breaks and George Breaks. He is predeceased by the love of his life, his wife of 61 years, Irene (nee Hassell). He is also predeceased by his sisters Florence Longstaff, Evelyn Longstaff and Hannah Taylor. Jack was born in New Westminster B.C. on July 1, 1924 and grew up in the Cloverdale / Hazelmere areas. Jack remembered the economic Depression of the 1930s as a time of great struggle for his family. During this time, the Breaks family focused on agriculture and local small business as a means to survive. Jack served in the Canadian Army during WW2 then returned home to continue work on the family dairy farm in Hazelmere. A small Oliver Cletrack crawler/dozer was purchased to clear part of the farm. This was the beginning of a landclearing and earthmoving business that Jack, Bill and George would operate and grow during the late 1940s, 1950s and1960s until the business was sold in 1965. The brothers were all hard workers and together took on some of the large jobs that were required as our Province developed in those years. More and larger equipment was purchased as bigger jobs were tackled. In the 1950s they did the site preparation for the Empire Stadium, were a Prime Contractor for Bechtel Corporation’s Trans Mountain Pipeline over the Rocky Mountains (Burnaby Mountain Terminal), built the cooling line for BC Hydro’s Burrard Thermal plant and built many roads in the South Surrey/Whiterock area, from which they were based. In the 1960s they built sections of the Deas Island Freeway (#99) and portions of the TransCanada Highway #401 between Vancouver and Hope. One of the last large jobs completed by the brothers was the preparation for the Simon Fraser University site, including clearing, excavating building sites, building roads and playing fields, two years of work in all. In 1979 Jack and his wife Irene moved to a beautiful farm in the South Langley / Aldergrove area where they lived for the rest of their lives. It was on this farm that Jack would enjoy countless days working outdoors, gardening, or in the kitchen enjoying a home cooked meal by Irene. Many days were accompanied by children or grandchildren, as he was a loving and wise father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
