Development moving ahead on district-owned downtown land To start accepting expressions of interest by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter The District of Maple Ridge is set to begin fielding expressions of interest from developers for a piece of prime real estate it owns in the downtown core. The three-acre lot between Haney Place and Valley Fair malls was purchased by the district last year for $3.7 million to try and jumpstart downtown development. Bordered by Selkirk Avenue, 227th Street and 119th Avenue,

the district envisions a mixed use commercial-residential development on the site – one that is environmentally sustainable or LEED certified and has amenities such as park space, public art as well as a percentage of units designated for affordable housing or rental stock. In its first year, Maple Ridge’s town centre investment program, which offers cash rebates for development fees, reductions in building-permit fees and property tax exemptions as a

way to entice downtown development, has already spurred more than $100 million in construction projects. More than a dozen developers, who are eager to avail themselves of the cost-saving incentives have contacted the district to enquire about the three-acre property. “I see tremendous potential in this and, of course, I’m hoping at the end of the day there is a profit,” said Coun. Al Hogarth, who was credited at council Monday for bringing the Smart Growth concept, which is followed in the down-

town, to Maple Ridge in 2002. “Coun. Hogarth has been instrumental in this. It’s not by accident these things happen, it’s by time commitment,” said Coun. Judy Dueck. Coun. Corisa Bell was excited by how quickly the process had moved forward. “I really like the concept of having a small percentage set aside for affordable housing,” she said. Once expression of interests are received, staff will prepare another report for council which will help them shortlist developers.

Provincial grant for six new trail bridges 20% increase in trail use in past 10 years by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter Thanks to $160,000 in Community Recreation Grants, Maple Ridge will get six new or rebuilt trail bridges to take them across local creeks and streams in the forests in and around the district. Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton made the announce-

ment in a Thursday news release. Two trails in the Silver Valley area, Mill Creek Trail and Maggie and Jiggs Trail, will get new bridges. As well, the Rainbow Ridge trail at 272nd Street near 108th Avenue in east Maple Ridge will also get a new bridge. The bridge on the Paulene Clark Trail near 256th Street and

102nd Avenue will be rebuilt. Also scheduled for rebuilding is the bridge on North Martyn Trail, at 124th Avenue and 264th Street, and the Wellman Bridge, also on the Rainbow Ridge trail. “Some of the bridges I think were so mossy, you almost didn’t realize you were on a bridge,” said Kelly Swift, parks and recre-

ation services general manager. Swift said use of trails is growing as people seek out nature. In the last decade, Maple Ridge has seen a 20-per-cent increase in trail use. Eighty per cent of the population now say they use the trails. “We just have a wonderful asset that many people don’t have with that trail network.”

Local Businesses are Staying Green! Ridge Meadows Recycling congratulates:

Countrywide Communications At Countrywide Communications we feel recycling is one of the best ways to make a positive impact on the world in which we live. Recycling is very important as waste has a negative impact on the natural environment. We do our part by separating all of our recyclables such as paper, plastic, glass and cans. We have recycle bins in all areas of our locations and our staff members separate our recyclables at the end of each shift. We re-use paper in our copy machine and recycle paper in our bathroom for hand drying. All of our phones, batteries and chargers are recycled and these articles never go into the landfill. We use shredders for waste paper, cardboard boxes are cut down and recycled. Plus toner is refilled and we re-use our file folders
