Events Guide April – August 2015


Welcome At this time of year, as we gear up for our end of year shows, exhibitions, and performances I am proud to witness high levels of creativity and skill demonstrated by our students. Every course produces an end of year show and the mixture of excitement and expectation is tangible within the School. This year is no exception as we are currently preparing for our Degree Showcase ‘Freshly Squeezed’ at a new venue in Manchester – Old Granada Studios. This high profile venue is certainly the ideal place to launch the careers of our new creatives.

10 examples of #RealWorldReady This a selection of some of our recent student success stories including a range of live briefs, competition wins and entrepreneurial activity.

As you will see every area has something planned and I do hope you can join us for at least one of the events. As we begin to reflect on the past academic year I wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate some of the outstanding success stories from the past few months. These achievements demonstrate success on a national level. The Creative Industries is one of the largest and fastest growing sectors of the economy and we are proud that our students continue to gain recognition and employment in this exciting and rewarding Industry.

1. Extended Diploma Photography student Gemma Bradshaw won Young Fylde Coast Photographer of the Year.

Congratulations to all our students.

2. Graphic Design students completed a corporate rebrand for paranormal activity company Shadow Hauntings.

3. Highly acclaimed Ice Dancer and theatrical entrepreneur Nicky Scott worked with fashion students on a live project for an Ice Dance production.


4. BA (Hons) Graphic Design students won 5 out of 6 categories at the prestigious National Calendar Awards. 8. Recent BA (Hons) Photography graduate Hannah Farrell exhibited at Castlefield Gallery, Manchester and has had her work selected for review in *Wallpaper magazine. 9. Extended Diploma Photography students have set up an events photography business and are already receiving commissions. 5. Regina Coulon, a BA (Hons) Fashion and Costume for Performance student, worked on a high profile project for the John Bishop TV show.

6. Blackpool Victoria Hospital have commissioned original artwork and hand painted murals from our students for their new Birth Centre.

7. The Society of British Artists selected Foundation Diploma student Heather Stephenson’s portrait for their Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London.

10. Current BA (Hons) Musical Theatre student Lewis Samuels has already started work with a professional theatre company.

Old Granada Studios

Young Artist of The Year

5th – 22nd May University Centre Gallery Free With submissions from 15 secondary schools across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre, this exhibition showcases the exceptional imagination, technique and talent of young people in the region.

Acoustic Gig 6th May 7.30pm University Centre Gallery Ext Dip Music Free An intimate evening of live acoustic music in our Gallery space. Students will be raising money for a local charity.

Much Ado About Nothing 27th, 28th, 29th May 3.00pm Stanley Park BA (Hons) Acting Free Following last year’s pioneering production of As You Like It. The B&FC Acting programme returns to produce a second outdoor Shakespearean comedy, Much Ado About Nothing. Don Pedro’s men return from the wars to the pastoral town of Messina where Romantic entanglements and intrigue are created and resolved. No need to book: Turn up on the day to this public event, feel free to bring your own food bringing a blanket or seat is also recommended.

Bat Boy

2nd, 3rd & 4th June Time: 2.00pm & 7.30pm Viva Blackpool BA (Hons) Musical Theatre £10.00 / £8.00 Booking: 01253 297 297 A Musical inspired by a series of tabloid headlines published in 1992 by The Weekly World News claiming that a terrifying creature, half-man and halfbat, had been discovered in a cave, escaped, and was being pursued by government officials. In the musical we see a couple of teenagers discover the creature in a cave near Hope Falls. What happens next is very convoluted and a tragic example of the dangers of prejudice and intolerance.


Freshly Squeezed Degree Showcase 2nd June Private view: 6pm - 9pm Open: 12.00pm - 9.00pm Fashion show: 7.30pm Old Granada Studios, Manchester. Free This exhibition is the culmination of three years hard work from our Creative Arts graduates. The end of year showcase includes work from Graphic Design, Illustration, Fine Art and Professional Practice, Photography and Fashion and Costume for Performance. The event also includes a fashion show catwalk event at 7.30pm. Visitors can expect to see a selection of the best work from the emerging designers, artists and illustrators.

The Country Wife

3rd June 7.30pm 4th June 2.00pm & 7.30pm Contact Theatre Manchester BA (Hons) Acting Ticket price: £10.00 / £8.00 Final year BA(Hons) Acting proudly present their graduation show of William Wycherley’s raucous and bawdy Restoration farce. Controversial in its time and ever poplar the story sees the rakish Horner take drastic measures in order to cast his eyes over the married women of London, including Margery Pinchwife, the Country Wife of the title.

Witches

9th June 7.30pm The Grand Theatre Extended Diploma Performing Arts £10.00 / £8.00 Booking: 01253 743 343 This is a faithful adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic story in which Boy and his Grandmother defeat the Grand High Witch and her followers. During the struggle, Boy gets turned into a mouse! The Witches are nothing like the ones who wear pointed hats and fly on broomsticks – they look very much like ordinary women, which helps their deception. Humour is provided by the vulgar Jenkins family, whose son, Bruno, also becomes a mouse.

Anything Goes

11th & 12th June 7.30pm The Grand Theatre BA(Hons) Musical Theatre £10.00 / £8.00 Booking: 01253 743 343 When the S.S. American sets out to sea, etiquette and convention get thrown overboard as two mismatched lovebirds cruise off on the course to true love…. But with a little help from a crew of singing sailors, exotic disguises and some good old-fashioned blackmail destiny reverts itself to its final port: true love. Anything Goes (Beaumont). Music and Lyrics by Cole Porter. Original book by P.G.Woodhouse & Guy Bolton. New Book by Timothy Crouse

& John Weidman and Howard Lindsay & Russel Crouse. Originally produced by Lincoln Centre Theatre, New York. By Arrangement with MusicScope and Stage Musicals Limited of New York.

FE Photo exhibition

15th – 26th June Private view: 12th June 6.00pm – 8.00pm FYC Creatives, Blackpool Ext Dip Photography Free An exhibition showcasing a selection of work from Extended Diploma Photography Students.

School Showcase

16th June – 28th August Private view: 16th June 6.00pm – 8.00pm Palatine Building Free Our corridors, classrooms and studio spaces are transformed into one huge exhibition as we showcase student work taken from all programmes.

New Designers 24th – 27th June Business Design Centre London BA (Hons) Fashion and Costume for Performance Every year over 3,000 of the most promising graduates exhibit their work. This exhibition hosts work from all the major design courses in the UK. Our students will be presenting their work in this ‘best of the best’ exhibition.
